1. ABC. (ADVERTISING) ABC. NY: Metropolitan Life Ins. Co. ca 1920. 8vo, (5 1/4 x 7 3/4”) pictorial wraps, light soil, VG. Every letter has a rhyme dealing with the healthy thing to do or eat. Illustrated in typical 1920’s style in b&w by M.C. Phares. “C is for Cough And its Cousin, the sneeze. Cover them both With your handkerchief please.” This copy is complete with an insert that has a full color copy of the line illustration that accompanies the letter “U”. The child is meant to use this as a guide for coloring the illustrations in the book. The verso of the sheet has a quiz on how to eat healthy. $125.00

RARE 1867 ADVERTISING ALPHABET2. ABC. (ADVERTISING) WINE OF TAR PICTURE ALPHABET. (Dayton: Oliver Crook printer, 1867). 8vo, pictorial wraps, margins trimmed, some soil and some old, neat mends, G+. This is a fascinating advertising alphabet with every letter representing a different virtue that Wine of Tar can provide. Weak children are made strong, delicate females gain tone and vigor. W is for Wine of Tar, a medicine of great merit. Each page is divided into thirds, each third with a woodcut illustration. A great advertising alphabet. $200.00

Featuring 8 very fine full page chromolithographed pages picturing old autos, plus 2 pages in brown line, with each letter of the alphabet prominently featured. Quite a large and striking book. Each letter of the alphabet has 2 full page automotive related illustrations in 2-color by PAL plus verse integrated into the text. This is followed by a parody of traditional Mother Goose rhyme i.e. “Little Jack Horner/ Would dash round a corner/never would slow up a bit./ He’d not even warn/ With a toot of his horn / and dogs that he’d hit.” $250.00

AVIATION ABC BY SHENTON8. ABC. (AVIATION) A NEW ALPHABET OF AVIATION by Edward Shenton. Phil.: Macrae Smith (1941). 4to, 7 1/4 x 9 1/4”, cloth, Fine in frayed dw. Written and illustrated by EDWARD SHENTON with 26 full page color lithos and with smaller color illustrations throughout the text. Each letter relates to several different aspects of the airplane. This is a new version of his earlier Alphabet of Aviation done in 1928, but this edition has more emphasis on the military aspects of aviation describing the B-19 bomber, torpedo planes and more. Shenton was a noted Pennsylvania artist trained in Philadelphia (and also an editor at Macrae Smith who published this book). $275.00

WONDERFUL DECORATIVE AZTEC ALPHABETS9. ABC. (AZTEC) ALFABETOS AZTECAS por el Dr. Antonio Penafiel. No pub. 1900, 3rd ed. Folio, 62 leaves, 1/4 leather and green cloth, a few minor margin mends else VG+. (OCLC lists a copy with 74 leaves. Our copy is complete as issued). Printed on rectos only in shades of blue, there are 4 very fine and interesting alphabets. One ABC uses typical Aztec designs within each standard block letter, another does the same within artistically designed letters and a third features a different native within a letter in large pictorial vignette. This is a wonderful ornamental and pictorial book of alphabets. $600.00

HILAIRE BELLOC ABC10. ABC. (BELLOC, HILAIRE) A MORAL ALPHABET in words of from one to seven syllables by H.B. [Hilaire Belloc]. Lond.: Edward Arnold 1899. 6 3/4 x 8 1/2”, cloth backed pictorial boards, covers soiled and edges rubbed else tight and VG. 1st ed. Each letter has a rhyme and also a moral related to it. “U” for the Upas tree / that casts a blight/ on those that pull their sister’s hair and fight.” Humorously illustrated in line by B.T.B. Each letter of the alphabet is represented by a different bird including a history of the bird and a hand-lettered rhyme with a lovely full color illustrations. A beautiful copy and including some unusual birds. $275.00

Containing 4 alphabets with all pages mounted on linen, printed on one side of the paper. Each page of text faces a very fine full page chromolithograph - 16 full pages of illustration in all. Includes the ALPHABET OF BEASTS, ALPHABET OF BIRDS, ALPHABET OF NATIONS AND SCRIPTURE ALPHABET. Very high quality printing and a rare title. $1200.00

Illustrated with 29 fine woodcuts including covers. “He who ne’er learns his ABC / Forever will a blockhead be. / But try to learn, be wise and then / You will be lov’d by all good men.” Quite scarce. $800.00

CHELONIIDAE PRESS ONE OF 5 ARTIST’S PROOFS14. ABC. (CHELONIIDAE PRESS) A FOWL ALPHABET. Easthampton: Cheloniidae Press 1986. 8vo (5 5/8 x 8 5/8”) bound in full vellum by Gray Parrot. Includes the alphabet bound in full vellum, a separate suite of proof plates and a Blind Alphabet housed in vellum backed chemise folder, all housed in a vellum backed cloth case, AS NEW with the Prospectus laid-in. The text for this alphabet is based on an 1885 volume on Birds from Our Living World by J.G. Wood. There is an 8 page introduction followed by 26 wood engravings of the various birds by Alan James Robinson, selected for their unusual beak formations. The lettering is a new alphabet designed and hand-lettered in a range of colors by Suzanne Moore. This was the 12th book by the Cheloniidae Press issued in a Regular Edition of 150 copies in vellum backed marbled boards, a Deluxe Edition of 50 signed and numbered copies, and a Full Vellum Edition of 26 copies. THIS IS NUMBER III OF ONLY 5 ARTIST PROOF COPIES OF THE FULL VELLUM EDITION that has each plate in the extra suite SIGNED BY ROBINSON AND NUMBERED “AP III”, there is no drawing mentioned in the prospectus. Printed on rives paper, frenchfold, the engravings are stunning. This is a magnificent alphabet. $2500.00

Containing Farmer Boy’s Alphabet and Maja’s Alphabet as well as Simple Simon, Henny Penny, Little Bo Peep, The Old Woman and Her Pig all illus. by Harrison Weir with 8 full page color illustrations and a few more stories. The Farmer Boy’s Alphabet is the feature of book with 12 pages including full page color illustrations of large block letters that are illustrated within the letter. The facing text pages explain the relevance to farming. Maja’s Alphabet is a quaint non-illustrated rhyming Alphabet of names. (SEE ILLUS TOP NEXT COLUMN) $350.00

19. ABC. (CIGARETTES) ABC WAY TO STOP SMOKING CIGARETTES by Conrad J. Dammann. NY: Worth Pub. Co. (1950). 4 5/8 x 6”, silver pictorial cloth, 128p., VG. 1st ed. A prescient look at the bad effects of cigarettes including a section on how tobacco companies lie to the public. The second section of the book is an alphabetical arrangement of suggestions to the “Nicotinist” who wants to break the smoking habit. Illustrated with full page and smaller line drawings and with a color plate by J. McA Smiley. “W stands for Wager. Make a substantial bet that you cannot afford to lose. If this doesn’t stop you, you are almost hopeless.” $125.00

Each letter of the alphabet has a different Coke related rhyme “K is for Kitchen With ice-box nearby. If you keep Coca Cola You’ll never go dry. V is for Value, Though the dollar’s depressed, A nickel still buys The drink that is best.” Illus. in typical 20’s art deco style in color on every page. Rare. $875.00

23. ABC. (COUNTRIES) PICTURE ALPHABET OF NATIONS OF THE WORLD. Lond. & Edin.: T. Nelson & Sons, circa 1880. 4to, 8 1/2” wide x 11”. pictorial wraps, sl. soil, VG+ with pages mounted on linen. Illustrated with 4 very fine full page color lithographed pages with each page divided into 6 sections. Each section features a native of a different nationality corresponding with the letter of the alphabet. The text is a short paragraph about the country often very judgmental in nature. Many unusual nationalities are included: D is for Dyaks, K is for Kampschadales, O is for Otaheitians. T is for Turks who are “lazy and stupid.” $425.00

Each front cover is the same except for the featured letter which is in red block type and changes with each booklet. Inside the front cover, the text is in rhyme and has a small color illustration. Facing pages feature fanciful full page color illustrations in folk-peasant style. Each rear cover has a rhyme about a different product sold by Pilnacek Parfumerie along with color illustrations (shaving cream, perfume, toothpaste etc). Most likely issued as a giveaway each time one purchased a Pilnacek product. It’s amazing to find a complete set, especially in such nice condition. (SEE ILLUS BOTTOM PRIOR PAGE) $800.00

UNCOMMON DISNEY MUSICAL ABC

25. ABC. (DISNEY) MICKEY MOUSE ABC. (Printed in Australia for the Publisher, London: Collins) no date, circa 1936. 6 3/8 x 7 12”, [12]p., stiff pictorial wraps, some cover soil and edge fraying else VG. Every page shows one of the Disney characters playing a different musical instrument. This early Disney book has 6 pages illustrated in full color and 6 illus. in blue. $450.00

DOGS * SEASIDE * ANIMALS26. ABC. (DOGS & SEASIDE) A.B.C. Lond.: Dean & Son, no date, [1873]. 4to (9 3/4 x 12 1/4”), cloth, pictorial paste-on, VG+. This book features 3 great ABC’s plus a section on transportation, illustrated by Vernon Stokes, F.A. Williams and F.M. Barton. First is a Sea-Side Holiday Alphabet where every letter relates to an activity or item at a sea vacation. “Q” is for Quay and “S” is for Shrimping. Illustrated by F.M. Barton with fine chromolithographs. Next is an incredible alphabet of dogs (no x,y, or z). M is for Mastiff and S is for Schipperke - featuring great chromos by Vernon Stokes. The section on transportation emphasizes train travel picturing famous lines of the world including the Great Eastern Engine, the Imperial Limited, Caledonian Express and others. The book ends with a fabulous ABC of animals engaged in a variety of antics. “S stands for School, which was kept by Dame Owl / T for the Tortoise, who couldn’t spell ‘fowl’.” Illustrated with clever chromolithographs by F.A. Williams. This is a great ABC picture book chock full of well printed and charming color illustrations. Very scarce. $750.00

TUCK DOG ALPHABET27. ABC. (DOGS) DOGS AND PUPPY DOG’S ABC. Lond: Tuck ca 1890. 4to, (8 1/2 x 11”), stiff pictorial wraps, slight cover soil else near fine. Each letter is represented by a different dog: Airedale, bull dog, chow, dachshund, Jap dogs, otter hound, poodle, pug, etc. Illus. with color cover, 4 full page chromos and with brown line illustrations on other pages. The short text is in rhyme: “P for the Poodle who’s waiting out there, How the Pug and Pomeranian stare!” A great ABC in the Nursery Tales Series. $300.00

A wonderful ABC with a fire prevention theme published by the Forestry Branch of the Dept. of Resources and Development in Canada. Illustrated in color on every page - “D” stands for Death, Destruction and Danger. $200.00

Each copy has an original rayograph signed by Man Ray. The rayograph is done on a sold black background and depicts a feather superimposed by large color block letters “A” “B” and “C”, mounted on a faux wood backer. The actual alphabet is printed on grand velin d’Arches paper and consists of 37 lithographs (including title) with each letter represented by more than one illustration. Each leaf has an artful brown litho with one word of text arranged artistically within the illustration. Although born in America ( 1890-1976 as Emmanuel Radnitzky), Man Ray spent most of his artistic life in Paris contributing to the Dada and Surrealist movements with his painting and photographs. Housed in the colorful publisher’s double-sided box are 6 illustrated books on one side and crayons, paints, a brush and a die cut sheet on the other side. The box measures 6” wide x 5 3/4 high and is 1 1/2” thick. When closed it has a rounded back and can sit on a shelf simulating a book. The book titles include Pinocchio, Aesop’s Fables, Sleeping Beauty, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood and the Gingerbread Boy. They have bright color covers

in the style of Richard Scarry and are illustrated in heavy outline inside. The child can use the crayons or the paint to color them. There is also a sheet of die-cut figures for the child to make finger puppets with. Completely unused and in fine condition, this is a charming 1950’s boxed library. The text of the letter reads: “I called at Mrs. V’s yesterday to look at some books, and in the course of the conversation with her daughter, told her of the children’s books I have written. She said none of them were in your library, and I thought you might be interested in trying them, so am sending you a copy of a promotion piece we got out for Book Week a number of years ago. This is a newspaper published by the hero of the stories, Freddy, the pig on the Bean farm. There are now twenty titles in the series - the latest being Freddy and the Space Ship. The books are published by Alfred Knopf and as to their popularity and suitability, I can refer you to any of the reference works dealing with children’s literature. By the way, if you are ever disposing of any discards, or gift books, in good condition, I would be interested in making an offer for them. It occurs to me that Mrs. T, from whom I bought some books a year or so ago, may have mentioned my books to you. An early edition of Burgess’ first separately published book, (1st separate edition issued in 1895). Illustrated in black throughout to accompany nonsense verse. The center spread contains his famous Purple Cow poem which was originally published anonymously. In this edition the last leaf contains Burgess’ admission that he authored the poem: “Ah yes, I wrote the “Purple Cow” - I’m sorry, now, I wrote it; But I can tell you Anyhow I’ll kill you if you quote it!” A scarce item. $500.00
