First Australian’s Stories Children’s Book Week Program

Story-telling is an integral part of Aboriginal culture, from traditional use of animal fable to teach and convey culture, to modern day stories about what it means to live and be part of country and community. They are an important and powerful bridge between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Come across the story bridge with us in a special day to celebrate the richness of Aboriginal story-telling and story tellers; both traditional and contemporary.

May O’Brien – Traditional Story Telling Indigenous elder, school teacher, children’s book au-thor and indigenous literacy advocate, May O’Brien, will be joining us to talk about the importance of tradi-tional story-telling in Indigenous culture. She has helped to share the stories passed down by the Wongutha Elders to their children by translating and writing them down for publication. These won-derful stories have recently been re-printed by Fre-mantle Press as the “Bawoo Stories” collection.

May O’Brien – Bawoo Stories Year 1 to 7

Waarda – Indigenous Children’s Stories for Today The Waarda Series of books edited by Sally Morgan are about creating a great range of children’s stories written by Indigenous people with Indigenous charac-ters and themes.

As such they both support the literacy development of Indigenous children and share the richness and depth of Indigenous story telling with non-Indigenous children.

Dr. Pat Dudgeon and Dr. Cheryl Kickett-Tucker are respected academics who have both played a lead-ership role in researching social psychology and In-digenous issues and how this impacts on education models and practices. Both have recently published a children’s book for the Waarda series.

Pat co-authored “Lily and her Shadow” with her niece Laura Dudgeon, which tells the story of a young girl leaving her Bardi roots to pursue an education in Perth; the transition made easier with a very special secret friend.

Cheryl has just published “Barlay” a modern day tell-ing of a traditional woordatj story that tells of what happens to the three young characters when they wander off into the bush despite their Nan’s warn-ings. Cheryl’s family has strong links to Noongar country, through the Wadjuk people on her mother’s side and the Ballardong people on her father’s side.
