Guns, Gangs & Youth Violence

When it comes to crime prevention, I’m a strong believer in taking proactive measures so the crime doesn’t happen rather than being reactive so it doesn’t happen again. With this summer’s spate of violent crime in Toronto, I am holding a spe-cial educational meeting on Gangs & Guns and other related criminal activity so we can keep our community safe and an enjoyable place to live and raise a family.

Officers from Peel Regional Police will lead an information session on this topic followed by a question and answer session from the public. Practical tips include:• what to do if you see suspicious activity near your home;• how to speak to your kids about gangs and other illegal activity;• how to notice the signs if some-one you know might be involved with ‘the wrong crowd;’ and more.

Back To School Safely

As motorists travelling through the streets of our com-munity, please be mindful and drive with extra care as students head back to school this month. Our school zones will once again be full of pedestrian and vehicle traffic heading in all sorts of directions; please bring your patience with you as you make your way through these areas. Parents and care-givers are reminded to consider walking with their children to school; it’s great exercise, reduces traffic congestion and vehicle emissions, and actually helps to get kids ready to learn each day!

Cars and Bikes Share the Road

As more people choose on-road cycling as a viable transportation option, it’s important that both motorists and cyclists learn to share the road. To increase shared-use safety and awareness, the City’s Transportation and Works Department is marking designated roadways with cycle-friendly signage together with enhanced pavement markings. Examples include:• Bicycle Lanes are on-road bike lanes reserved exclusive-ly for cyclists. The lane is approximately 1.5 metres (4.92 feet) wide identified by regulatory bicycle lane signs and white bicycle and diamond symbols on the pavement. White solid and dashed pavement markings indicate the separation of the lane. Vehicle parking is prohibited along these routes.• Sharrows are shared use lanes designed to accommo-date shared motor vehicle and bicycle traffic. Side by side sharrow lanes are a minimum of 4 metres wide (13.12 feet) identified by “Share the Road” warning signs and white bicycle/chevron symbols on the pavement. The symbols are painted on the pavement in the intended space for bicycle travel. The pavement markings also pro-mote motor vehicles to drive further away from the curb.• Edge Lines are similar to Bicycle Lanes however they are not identified by signs or symbols on the pavement. They are typically 1.5 metres wide (4.92 feet) identified by white solid and dashed pavement markings that define the travelled portion of the roadway. Vehicle parking may be permitted along these routes.• Bike Routes are roadways signed for bicycle use. They provide cyclists with a suggested route alternative be-tween destinations. They are identified by directional and

informational bike route signs. In all cases, bicyclists should not use the sidewalk, as it is intended for pedestrian (walking) traffic only.

According to the Highway Traffic Act, bicycles are vehicles. Cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as mo-torists and are subject to the same traffic laws, signs and signals.

Need Helping Finding a Family Doctor?

The Ministry of Health has created a special program – called Health Care Connect (HCC), to help citizens in Ontario find a primary health care provider in his/her com-munity. This is a free service provided the person has a valid OHIP card.

The HCC process involves the patient phoning in to a cen-tral registration number (1-800-445-1822) or alternatively, registering online at www.ontario.ca/healthcareconnect. Once the person has provided his/her health card number and answers some brief questions, he/she appears on a list for a Care Connector to contact in the CCAC where the person resides. The Care Connector then tries to find a doctor for the patient (based on the priority with which the patient needs health care services).

Monday, Sept. 3 is Labour Day! City Hall will be closed on this statutory holiday.

Our City’s Newest OHL Franchise

Mississauga is now home to a new Ontario Hockey League (OHL) franchise, the Mississauga Steelheads. With the inaugural season about to get underway the city is buzzing with excitement.

OHL in Mississauga dates back to 1998 when the IceDogs, called Mississauga home. The IceDogs played nine seasons at the Hershey Centre before being moved to Niagara to make way for the St. Michael’s Majors, who were being relocated from Toronto. After spending five years in Mis-sissauga, it was announced this past May that the Missis-sauga Majors were up for sale. In order to keep the team in Mississauga, local businessman and owner of Landmark Sport, Elliot Kerr, purchased the franchise. Kerr’s ties to the city, coupled with his experience in the junior hockey world as a former part owner of the Mississauga IceDogs and Guelph Storm, made him the perfect fit for this new team.

Through a continued effort to become more actively involved in the community, the Steelheads event team travelled across the city this summer to many different local events. By engaging the crowd and supporting local initiatives, the Steelheads have created a positive pres-ence in Mississauga so far, and are looking forward to continuing these efforts for years to come.

The Steelheads offer exciting OHL hockey at an affordable price in a fun, family friendly environment, with season tickets starting as low as $399. For more information about tickets, or to see the full 2012-13 schedule, visit www.mississaugasteelheads.com. Home opener is Friday, Sept. 21 against the Kitchener Rangers. Catch the action at the Hershey Center and support your city’s team!

Realty Feature: Magic Colour for Selling

Colour plays a big part in selling a house. Your walls can convince a buyer that your home is move-in ready or leave them looking elsewhere. If your goal is to see the sparkle of love at first sight, a paint palette to suit a range of buyer tastes is best.

Before painting your walls, use a pre-made crack filler or drywall compound to fill in minor cracks & picture hook holes. Use the same base paint that currently exists on the surface you are repainting. Latex on latex, oil on oil.

Consider warm, inviting & neutral paint colours such as soft yellows, warm beige & earth tones. If you are unsure, ask the professionals. Tear out magazine photos of rooms that look appealing & match colours at the store. Paint ceiling & crown moulding with flat white paint to finish the look.

A fresh coat of paint makes your home feel fresh & clean, creating an inviting environment for home buyers. Paint colour can help you sell your house faster!
