Well my sincere thanks go to the many students who have given me kind and thoughtful suggestions of princi- pally things that I can do to act like a principal during Mrs Bartholomeusz’ and Ms Yardley’s long service leave. “Wear glasses”, “talk on the phone” and “smile at people in the playground” were some of the recent sugges- tions. With a few more ideas I think I might just have this gig figured out. I would also like to thank the many teachers and administration staff who have been so supportive and patient as Andy Stefaniak and I try to keep on top of everything over the last week and a half. Even with both Gayle and Gill still doing an awful lot of work in the background while they are on leave, we have both been kept very busy by the huge job that our Principal and Assistant Principal do for our school. Their large workload is a big part of why Caulfield South PS is such an exciting and successful school. It will be wonderful to have them both back to work at the start of next week. 3-6 Swimming The swimming program has now concluded for Years 3-6 students, after three weeks of packing swimming bags, jumping on and off buses, looking after numerous personal items whilst moving from place to place and getting changed, and all of the other personal organisation challenges that the annual swimming program pre- sents to our students. I have received a great deal of positive feedback from the teachers and students regarding the program this year. This activity only happens as a result of an enormous amount of organisation done by Mr John Wink, our Phys Ed teacher. So my thanks go to him for all the hard work that he put in to make everything run so smoothly. We are also thankful to the swim school staff at GESAC for the professional swim school pro- gram they run for our 3-6 students. Learner Agency This year at Caulfield South Primary, our teachers are pursuing professional learning in the area of Learner Agency. Put simply, learners with agency are active in their own learning and have voice, choice and ownership as learners. They are involved in decisions about what, where, when, with whom and how they learn (voice and choice). They also develop personal and academic development goals and reflect on their progress toward these goals (ownership). Teacher and peer feedback plays a crucial part in assisting learners to reflect on and improve their learning. An important step in the development of agency is that learners are challenged and that they are given the opportunity to struggle with this challenge, developing a “can do” attitude when they experi- ence success. Recently, our teachers have been working on developing strategies to improve how we give meaningful, target- ed and accessible feedback to students- gone are the days of writing “well done” and putting a tick at the bottom of a page of work! Our goal is to develop young people who know what they are learning, can articulate their personal learning goals, listen and respond to feedback and feel confident enough to challenge themselves- knowing that often failure is found on the pathway to success. More information about learner agency can be found at the following link: http://www.ibo.org/globalassets/early-years-agency.pdf Regards, Andy Term 1 | Week 7 Edition 4 15 March 2018 1300 105 343

What does a principal actually do? Well my sincere thanks go to the many students who have given me kind and thoughtful suggestions of princi-pally things that I can do to act like a principal during Mrs Bartholomeusz’ and Ms Yardley’s long service leave. “Wear glasses”, “talk on the phone” and “smile at people in the playground” were some of the recent sugges-tions. INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

Class Lists This year the school has tried compiling class list information through the use of a QR code reader. At present, many of the class lists are incomplete. If

you have not been able to share your details with your class rep for whatever reason, could you please urgently do so, either by using the QR Code, or by another method. The names of the Class Parent Reps (who organise and distribute class lists) are listed below. Please see your class rep, the school office or your child’s teacher if you require any further information about class lists.

As of Term 2 this year, it will be mandatory that all absences are approved on the day the absence occurs. This initiative aims to improve both student safety and edu-cational outcomes. CSPS has started recording student absences using computer software called Sentral. As of Term 2, the Sentral software will automatically email the families of all students with unexplained absences, with a request to explain the absence. Explanations can be made by replying to the email, or using the Flexibuzz app. As these emails will be sent using an automated system, it is imperative that your contact details are current, so please email the school if your details need updating. Given that this is a brand new system, we do anticipate some initial teething problems and ap-preciate your patience as we iron out the flaws. Peacemakers Report

Wow! We’ve had such a great start to the year with our committed Peace-makers team out in the yard helping other students. We had a Peacemaker training day on Tuesday the 27/2 and learnt all about what to do when there’s a problem with the students outside. We learnt all about why it’s important to be good role models and why helping out students figure out their own solutions is important. Since then, we’ve been giving up half of one lunch time per week to work as Peacemakers- it’s been very rewarding so far. Our aim is to make a happy, healthy and respectful school community

and to make sure everyone has an enjoyable experience at school.

ITALIAN NEWS

Buongiorno/buonasera (Good day/good evening).

Our school recently purchased a site licence to a Languages program called LINGUASCOPE. All students will be given a Username and a Pass-word. They will be able to log into this program, in order to further develop

their language skills in Italian.

This program may also be used at home. In addition to Italian, it includes several other languages, all of which may be accessed using the same Username and Password I encourage all students, as well as their par-ents, to access this program in their own time in order to gain the most

benefit from it. I look forward to positive and improved results.

Buon divertimento! (Enjoy!)

Junior School Council Report

On Monday last week, the Junior School Council met and discussed what we could do with the playground rocks to make sure that people use them more sensibly when they are playing. Some of the ideas that we came up with were to have some students supervising the people playing with the rocks and to create playground posters that suggest activities that you can do with the rocks that are fun, safe and creative. We are currently working on making the posters and we will have them ready to put up in the play-ground very soon. We are really happy to have this responsibility and feel very committed to ensuring that we make a positive difference for the kids

in the playground.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS – CSEF PAYMENTS

Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps ensure that no student will miss out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities. It is part of making Victoria the Education State and the Government’s commitment to breaking the link between a

student’s background and their outcomes.

CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUND (CSEF)

School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors, excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works and sports teach teamwork, discipline and

leadership. All are part of a healthy curriculum.

CSEF will be provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activi-ties. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a tem-porary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consid-eration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relat-ing to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your

child.

The annual CSEF amount per student is:

•• $125 for primary school students

•• $225 for secondary school students.
