Street urchins. A bitter-sweet story – steeped in humanity and hope

Nicoletta Torre

Come gatti nascosti nell’ombra Illustrations by Luisella Grondona

Città aperta junior 2009

Hardcover - 17 x 17 cm

+13 years

“Finge sempre di guardare altrove, la mamma, mentre lui ci riempie di botte. Anche quando, a

calci, ci butta in strada, lei abbassa la testa e nasconde il viso fra le mani.

Mio fratello mi spinge lungo stradine assolate, fra muretti sbrecciati che separano cortili in terra

battuta dove grufolano magri maiali.”

Can a street urchin, an outcast of outcasts, find a star to look at and hope ? the bitter story told by

Nicoletta Torre ends with this question.

A nameless child, who is regularly beaten by his father, is then put on the street with his elder

brother and lives on the fringe of a consumer world.

A tough story - to help young readers to reflect about the conditions of a great

number of neglected children.

Nicoletta Torre, a former primary school teacher, is a successful and award-winner author of

several books addressed to young readers.
