I must start this week with a massive THANK YOU to everyone who supported the

PTFA’s firework event on Saturday. There was certainly plenty of whizz, pops and bangs

from the fireworks. It was lovely to see so many of you enjoying the fun, spending time

with friends and family. Thank you to all the members of the PTFA and the staff and

parents who gave up their time to help on the stalls. These events take a great deal of

work behind the scenes and we are very grateful to you all.

Now that the month of November is here the children in KS1 and Early Years are beginning preparations for

their Christmas performances. The stage has been put up and every now and again there is the delightful

sound of singing coming from the classrooms. Letters will follow with details of performance times and an

opportunity to purchase a ticket to come and see your children.

On Wednesday we held our Phonics and KS1 SATS information session for parents. Our thanks go to

those who attended and we hope that you found it useful. Miss Askham has added the PowerPoint slides to the website so

that you can view this if you were unable to join us. If you have any questions please ask your child’s class teacher and

they will be happy to help you.

We finished this week with our Remembrance Service on Friday morning. This is always a moving and thought provok-

ing time for the children and staff at Reculver CEP School. We come together to remember all those who have fought in

the wars. Thank you for sending in photographs of family members that can be shared with the whole school as part of

this service and for your donations to the Royal British Legion. We will announce the amount collected in due course.

If your child is absent for a holiday in term time, you may receive a penalty notice from the Local Authority. We would like to clear up a misconception: that money does not come to the school so we do not benefit from the issuing of penalty notices. However, if parents do not then support the school with the paying of trips and activities as a result, this does impact on all of the other children and eats away at our already fragile school budget. This issue is going to be discussed further with the school governors. When we surveyed parents last year, 100% of the respondents said that they were happy to pay for school trips and activities. In a time when money is very scarce, a lot of schools are cancelling these activities and we have not cancelled any, or charged for our clubs and we do not wish to unless absolutely necessary, so we do ask you to support us in our aims, which we are aware that the majority do. A reminder that only children who are actually travelling on the bus should by going to the hall at the end of the day. Parents who are travelling by car are asked to park sensibly and walk into school to collect their children. It is very dangerous for parents to park on the zig zag lines and behind the bus while waiting for their children to be dismissed from school and we have been notified that this has been happening on occasions. The children will be reminded of this on Monday.

Tomorrow is our Fun Open Morning from 10.00 am until 12 noon for prospective parents. Do remind your family and friends as we don’t want anyone to miss out on an opportunity to visit the new Early Years classes at our school. There will be lots of fun activities for the children to enjoy and refreshments for all.

Next week is our Anti-Bullying week and Mr Barker has sent a letter to you all outlining the week.

Please remember that the children can come to school on Friday 17th November wearing yellow

which is the colour of friendship. We will be collecting for Kidscape and Children in Need and

there will be 2 collection buckets on the gate on Friday, ready to receive your donations to these

charities.

Our New Library

The new library is really starting to take shape as we now have some amazing new furniture. Hopefully this will

make the library a more inviting place to be as there are now seating areas. Our librarians are also busy keeping the library organised and are there at break and lunch-

times to help the children to change their reading books.

Happy reading!

YEAR 1: In maths, Year 1 have continued to work on their subtraction number sentences and have challenged themselves by comparing statements. We have been very impressed with their determination and focus in class, using counters and jottings to aid their learning. The children have worked hard on using story language this week through retelling the story of The Three Little Pigs. We have focused on reading back through our work, before editing and improving. Year 1 have produced some super sentences and showed off their lovely handwriting. Just like the little pigs, the children have also enjoyed creating their own town in our topic lesson this week. Having created towns out of building blocks, Lego and stickle bricks, the children learnt about birds eye view and investigated map symbols. In science, the children have been introduced to Venn diagrams. They have moved on to sorting everyday objects by both the material they are made of and their properties. It has been a busy week of super learning. Well done, Year 1!

EARLY YEARS: Happy Diwali! This week our learning has been based around the theme Diwali. We have written Diwali cards, learning how to write the red word 'To' and using our Fred fingers to write the green word 'from'. We have also looked at capital letters and their use at the beginning of a person's name. In our maths we have been making repeating patterns using 2D shapes, we have used 2, 3 and even 4 shapes to make our patterns! We have engaged in a lot of Diwali themed activities such as making clay diva lamps, creating Mendi & Rangoli patterns and re-telling the story of Rama and Sita using masks. On Wednesday we had an extra session of PE where we used all of our bodies to learn some Bollywood dancing. On Friday afternoon we had a Diwali celebration where we brought all of this learning together. On Friday we also learnt about Remembrance day, we talked about why this day was important and why we wear poppies. We made poppies and wore them and also had a 2 minutes silence. What a busy week of learning!

YEAR 2: It is that time of year when the children begin to practise their Christmas Nativity. After X factor style auditions, parts have been allocated and the children have begun practising their singing, dancing and acting skills. We have been so proud of how well they are listening to direction. The children have written some great recounts of a firework display they have seen. The recounts included adjectives and even some similes! In Science the children have conducted simple tests on a range of materials, making predictions and drawing conclusions.

YEAR 6: Our Voyage of Discovery has continued this week as the children took part in a Darwin themed ‘Thinking Path’ task. They really showed their inquisitive side as they asked questions about our local environment. Just like Darwin they looked for patterns and tried to explain the unexplained. The children also continued to impress us with some fantastic historical fiction styled writing based on Darwin’s exploration of the Galápagos Islands. This week the children have been set Mathletics homework. Remember our lunchtime homework club runs each Friday. This week you will have received an email about a planned trip to the Houses of Parliament. Please return your expression of interest slip ASAP so we can continue to make arrangements. Thank you in advance.

YEAR 3/4: This week the children have become trainee journalists reporting about firework displays they witnessed. They have identified differences between open and closed questions, before composing their own interviews ready to include in their reports. We have sent the children home with details of a Stone Age research topic for their English homework during the next 3 weeks. Fizzpop Science visited us this week to demonstrate their wonderful, exciting club that will be starting in Term 3 on Mondays after school. There is a charge of £38 for the 5 sessions and children will be able to keep anything they make, such as rockets and slime! For your information, there are still a few spaces available. In the next few weeks, we will be carrying out a science investigation and children will need a 2 litre drinks bottle. Please could they bring them into school – dojo points will be awarded per bottle brought in. Thank you to everyone who has paid for and returned forms for our Kent Life Trip. If you haven’t already done so, please could payments be made by Parent Pay and forms returned to your child’s class teacher. Please could you ensure your child wears a coat to school as the weather has got a lot colder.

YEAR 5: We have had an exciting week in Year 5 (again!) continuing our work on The Ancient Greeks with the Tales of Odysseus in English. The children have been writing diary entries and experimenting with using brackets - and dashes - to add extra information, as well as spicing up their descriptive writing with figurative language. We had an enjoyable day on Wednesday when we thought about the idea of being All Different, All Equal as part of our anti-bullying work. We also had a visit on Wednesday from one the University of Kent Science Team, who did a demonstration in assembly. Apologies in advance if the children start trying to use your bins as air-blasters - it was very exciting so they might be inspired! In Science we have been investigating air-resistance with mini parachutes whilst in RE we have continued our learning about the type of Messiah the Jews were expecting and how this was different and similar to Jesus. In Maths we have been using tables to find information and are getting ready to move on to Multiplication and Division. Next week, we are planning an exciting theme day on Wednesday as part of our Ancient Greek's topic and would love the children to get dressed up for this. We will put details on the Class Dojo pages for inspiration. The children should have a memorable day involving art, drama, music and food-tasting, amongst other things! Remember to keep up the reading at home, the classes are really notching up some great reading results on their quizzes...particularly those reading 4 or more times a week. Well done! Have a lovely weekend

Remembering was the theme of worship for this week as we pre-pared our minds for our whole school act of Remembrance. We looked at the importance of remembering God's faithfulness, the last supper and times in our lives that have been special to us. During worship in the classroom the children had the opportu-nity to discuss why we carry out an act of Remembrance and wear poppies each year. The week culminated in a poignant and moving act of Remembrance, where as a school community we stood together to remember all those who have served and are serving in our armed forces.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning
