0n the other hand there stands a shocking two word irony i.e. CHILD LABOUR.

Giggles , laughter & innocence - these are the words which best describe CHILDHOOD - the period one relishes for life . . . . .

BUT

FUTURE AT STAKE BUT NO ONE CARES !!!!!!!A child is similar to a sapling , which if nurtured with care ,will blossom to its full strength but if not then the sapling will be doomed.

CHILD LABOUR is one of the most burning issues these days. It is a pity that our future generations are falling a prey to this. Being compelled , our learners become the bread & butter earners of the family . This problem is looming large and is making our forth coming generations hollow like a termite.

WHAT IS CHILD LABOUR?

CHILD LABOUR is defined as work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development.

It is the work that exceeds a minimum number of hours depending on the age of a child and on the type of work.

STATISTICS FOR INDIAIn India children aged 5-14 are above 90 million. During the last year, the Federal Bureau of Statistics released the results of its survey funded by ILOs IPEC. The findings were that 8.2 million children age group of 5-14 years are working in India out of total 90 millionchildren in this age group.

fifty percent of these economically active children are in age group of 5 to 9 years. Even out of these 8.2 million economically active children, 5.6 million were claimed to be working in the agriculture sector. 73% of them were said to be boys.

61% in Asia, 32% in Africa, and 7% in Latin America, 1% in US, Canada, Europe and other wealthy nations.

In Asia, 22% of the workforce is children. In Latin America, 17% of the workforce is children.

246 million child workers aged 5 and 17 were involved in child labor.

Out of which 171 million were involved in work that by its nature is hazardous30% of our countrys total population is leading life below the poverty-line, in which the people are deprived of basic necessities of life like clothing, shelter, food, education and medication, the children of these people will be forced to become Labourers' or workers in order tosurvive.Our people are not aware of the importance of education. Class-based education system is another reason for increasing child Labour as a result, child Labour is increase in rural areas. The government has not put its laws into practice to stop child Labour in our country thats why child labour is increasing day by day. CAUSES

WHAT HAS BEEN DONE ?

The Mines Act of 1952:

The Act prohibits the employment of children below 18 years of age in a mine.

NO CHILD LABOUR IN MINES!!!!!!!The Factories Act of 1948

The Act prohibits the employment of children below the age of 14 years in any factory. The law also placed rules on who, when and how long can pre-adults aged 1518 years be employed in any factory.

The Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act of 1986: The Act prohibits the employment of children below the age of 14 years in hazardous occupations identified in a list by the law. The list was expanded in 2006, and again in 2008.

INITIATIVES AGAINST CHILD LABOUR

In 1979, the Indian government formed the Gurupadswamy Committee to find about child labour and means to tackle it. The Child Labour Prohibition and Regulation Act was not enacted based on the recommendations of the committee in 1986.A National Policy on Child Labour was formulated in 1987 to focus on rehabilitating children working in hazardous occupations.The Ministry of Labour and Employment had implemented around 100 industry-specific National Child Labour Projects to rehabilitate the child workers since 1988. NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANISATIONS

Many NGOs like Bachpan Bachao Andolan,CARE India,Child Rights and You,Global march against child labour,RIDE Indiaetc. have been working to eradicate child labour in India.Prathamis India's largest non-governmental organisation with the mission 'every child in school and learning well.'
