Laraine’s Corner

Now that it is getting colder outside an indoor picnic would be so much fun. Get a Picnic Blanket and have an indoor picnic in your living room. You could even have each child bring a special item to share at the picnic with their friends. Laraine

Jackie has been and is wonderful to our family. Our son Austin, who is turning 13 in February went to Jackie’s dayhome as a little boy. He still has fond memories of his time

Reduce Reuse Recycle Be a Good Earth Friend

What will you and the dayhome children do this month to reduce your consumption, reuse what you already have, recycle and be a good earth friend. Submit your ideas to [email protected]

Plastic

Plastic products seem to be around us everywhere: fruit packaged in plastic clam shells, milk purchased in plastic jugs, water in plastic bottles, plastic grocery bags, plastic wrap, ziplocks… What did we use before plastic… the answer often is: a more reusable product, such as glass or a more biodegradable product such as paper or cardboard. Although we are getting better as a nation at recycling, lots of plastic still ends up in the land fill or in the ocean where it takes a long, long, long, long time to break into smaller particles but actually never really decomposes like a paper bag or milk carton would.

In the ocean it takes 3 months for a waxed milk carton to decompose. It takes up to 450 years for a plastic bottle to break down and even when it does it’s not gone, it breaks down into tiny particles that fish ingest and then die from. It really isn’t a pretty story. This month observe your plastic usage and make a decision to use less plastic. Every small step makes a difference in the end. Here are some ideas:

• Purchase milk in waxed cartons instead of plastic jugs • Purchase reusable shopping bags and keep them in your car so they are there when you need them • Purchase a Britta filter and filter your own water rather than buying bottled water. • Check your cupboards for reusable containers that can be used for packing lunches and then make a commitment to using them daily.

Their suits are black and their vests are white. They waddle to the left and they waddle to the right They stand on the ice and they look very neat As they waddle along on their little flat feet. Six little penguins off an iceberg did dive, One bumped his beak and then there were five. Five little penguins swam the ocean floor, One saw a whale and then there were four Four little penguins spun around, whee-ee! One spun off and then there were three.

Three little penguins, with nothing to do, One went fishing and then there were two Two little penguins, having lots of fun One fell off the iceberg and then there was one. One little penguin, when the day was done, Went home to sleep and then there were none.

Samaritan’s Foundation

Our agency executive director, Michelle Tamashiro spent two weeks this fall working with The Samaritan Foundation and the Ben Sawatzky Foundation in The Dominican Republic. She assisted with the building of 23 home that were gifted to 23 poverty stricken families. Child Development Dayhomes donated the funds for building one of these houses in Sosua, Dominican.

Michelle delivered many medical supplies, personal care products, prescription glasses, clothes, school supplies and toys, donated by friends and co-workers to those in need. Tears of gratitude were shed and many thanks spoken for the generous donations.

The Samaritan Foundation assists the poorest of the poor in the Dominican Republic by providing modest housing in villages. If you would like to find out more visit:

National Child Day

National Child Day is a day to remember that children need love and respect to grow to their full potential. It’s a day to marvel at their uniqueness and all they have to offer. It’s a time to think about and celebrate how you can and do make a difference in the life of a child.

There are many ways to celebrate our children: • Plan a party

• Create new “All About Me” posters with photos to put up in the dayhome

• Display children’s artwork

• Frame your children’s favorite paintings

• Make a small photo book of your dayhome children and their families, include photos of grandparent, parents, pets...

Games and activities for you and your toddler

Comfort

Turn-taking games or songs such as “Bumping Up and down in My Little Red Wagon” will help children understand the right way to take turns with others while also fostering a sense of cooperation.

Make time for your child to share feelings and reactions about his or her day. You may need to help with some words as your child’s vocabulary grows.

Play

Pretend play: Provide a corner equipped with props where your child can “make-believe.” Occasionally join in these pretend games. For some children, these role plays help them explore and express their feelings.

Sensory games: Stimulate your child’s sense of touch by letting him or her feel things like a brush, prickly rubber toy, sponge, sandpaper, or velvet. Have him or her match and name textures and objects. Put them in a bag and have the child find and name them.

Creative activities: Activities done with crayons, paint, paper and other art materials offer a fun experience for your child. These activities will encourage eye-hand coordination and fine motor skills, and give your child a sense of control.

Teach

Sorting: Encourage your child to sort things by colour, shape, size and texture.

Rhyming games: Let your child expand his or her vocabulary. Try to label familiar objects and actions and sing familiar songs. Use picture books to label objects while also fostering an enjoyment for books. Remember to give your child a chance to use all the new words.

Action songs: “Head and Shoulders” and “If You’re Happy and You Know It” help children become familiar with body parts. Excerpt from the Invest in Kids Resource Kit:

1 Sing or chant the penguin poem. See page 3.

2 Serve a penguin snack. Fish crackers on a vanilla yogurt iceberg.

4 Winter in Australia is like summer in Canada. Have a beach party.

5 6 Some countries do not have winter, they have a rainy season. Put on some rubber boots and pretend to splash around in pretend puddles.

9 Make a winter clothing collage. Cut out pictures of mittens, hats... and glue onto paper.
