Principal’s Message
2017 Student Leaders My congratulations to our new School Captains for 2017 who will no doubt be somewhat nervous as they perform their first duties at the Year 10 Graduation Ceremony. I expect they will do us proud as they did when addressing the whole school assembly in giving their speech prior to elections. Our student leaders for 2017 are:
Captains: Carley Bates and Marylyn Faatele
Vice Captains: Holly Towner and Joseph Laulu
Prefects: Joel Kerr and Courtney Johnson
Congratulations to our students Maddison Tuillier, Aamie-Lee Wallace, Carley Bates, Aiesha Pettit-Young, Christine Beale and Katie-Lee McClenahan whose artwork around the project ‘Walking Into Good Health’ will be recreated in a mural that they will paint for a wall at Mt Druitt Hospital. Thanks to Mr Duffy and Dale Watson for their support.
Thank you to Staff Never more than now am I thankful for the hardworking, dedicated team of staff here at Shalvey and we should all be grateful that there are so many talented teachers and ancillary staff who, on a daily basis, enrich the lives of the students in our school. My sincere thanks to you all as you give much to our students well beyond the 9-3 teaching load.
Thank you to Parents and Community There are a number of parents who also have made enormous contributions to our school - our P&C President Narelle Eyre, as well as Georgie Crabb, Georgie McCann, Debbie Cauchi, Solvi Kirkevik, Veisinia Halangahu, Tere Jubilee, Tania Bailey, Tiana Stanley, Cynthia Barwick and Sharon Rudd. I would also like to extend the thanks of the school to the parents who have supported us in our endeavours to make Shalvey Campus a positive environment where quality teaching and learning continues to be the major focus.

‘Respect it – Don’t wreck it’
Students from Shalvey Campus
participated in the Graffiti Education
Program – ‘Respect it - Don’t wreck it’
run by Blacktown City Council. Students
learned about the impacts of graffiti,
self respect, positive decision making
and responsible action.
At the completion of the program,
students were encouraged to enter the
competition which required them to
create an anti-graffiti advertisement.
Last week, students were awarded a
certificate and gift voucher on assembly
from The City Image Coordinator
at Blacktown City Council for their
entries in the competition.
Congratulations to Kyle Whitton who
was the major prize winner this year.
Well done also to runners up Ronald,
Jayden, Jamielee and Melody.
Thank you to Ms Shaw for her work
with Year 8 on this program.

Young Mob – Road Trip 2016
Over the October school holidays, leaders from Chifley College Shalvey Campus were joined by others from Jamison High School on an eight day road trip through Wagga Wagga and Albury, visiting Wiradjuri and Yorta Yorta country.
Students participated in ceremonies, made artefacts like bundis (a traditional club made from wattle or mulga wood) and stone tools, learned to weave and visited important cultural sites. Throughout the trip the leaders learned about themselves and their culture, something that is central to Young Mob. Students were also responsible for their own cooking, cleaning and setting up/taking down their tents.
One of our students said, “Young Mob has helped me in many ways such as learning about our culture, school and just life. Having no shame is important to me. I was never able to get up and speak in front of people but Young Mob has helped with that. I’m so thankful for Young Mob because I’ve made a lot of new friends and memories that I will never forget.”
Mr Lennox (Transition Adviser) was lucky enough to join the leaders, learning along with everyone else. “As a teacher and a non-Aboriginal person, being able to participate in the camp was an immensely important opportunity. I learned so much about Indigenous culture that I will be able to take back into the classroom. This will make me a better teacher and improve my teaching practice to help young Indigenous students.”
Young Mob is a positive youth development program that focuses on culture, respect and confidence. All the young people in the program are leaders from the beginning. The program has been operating at Chifley College Shalvey Campus since 2010.
Clontarf Wrap Up for 2016
Since opening its first Academy for 25 boys in 2000, the Clontarf
Foundation has grown to cater for approx. 4700 boys in 84 schools
across Australia. The Clontarf Foundation exists to improve the
education, discipline, life skills, self-esteem and employment
prospects of young Aboriginal men.
In Term 2 this year, the Shalvey Campus Clontarf Academy
opened its doors with Shannon Williams and Martin Iti working
with students on a range of behavioural and lifestyle issues while
working with the school to best support their educational needs.
Using a comprehensive approach of supportive relationships, a welcoming environment,
and a diverse range of activities, the students develop improved self-esteem and
confidence.
Academy activities are planned within the focus areas of education, leadership,
employment, healthy lifestyles, life skills and football. In order to remain in the program,
participants must continue to work at school and embrace the objectives of the Foundation.
In 2016, the boys enrolled in the Shalvey Campus Clontarf Academy have had the
opportunity to participate in a variety of activities including:
State of Origin games
100% attendance lunch and dinners
Uniform incentive activities (aqua golf)
9-a-side rugby league carnivals

Table tennis competitions
Shalvey Campus Clontarf Academy have had a great year so far and look forward to a new year in
2017 with lots more events and activities, as well as welcoming our new incoming Year 7 students.
In timetabled Sport periods, Year 7 have been
participating in a range of different sports throughout
the year where they spend a week practising skills,
then a week of round robin tournaments in their
house groups: Banks, Cuthbert, Dobell and
Sutherland. Students have been working on
teamwork, cooperation and sportsmanship qualities
during sports time, with standout students receiving
Sport Superstar awards, which are accompanied by a
VIVO reward.
Each class spends a period every fortnight with Miss Harvey
doing activities that improve their Personal and Social
Capabilities. Of late, classes have been participating in the
“Bean Bag Challenge” which requires students to work
together, communicate effectively, encourage one another,
overcome obstacles and set goals. Congratulations to 7A, 7Y
and 7V for their success and effort in this challenge!
Year 7 have had a great first year at high school making new friends and experiencing new challenges!
Some of the highlights have included the College Disco, College Gala Day, Happiness Cycle, the Sydney
West Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals, The Run Beyond Project, R U OK? Day, Multicultural Day
and the PCYC Volunteer Program.
Throughout the year, students have had the opportunity to earn VIVO points for excellence in the areas
of attendance, communication, cooperation, teamwork and leadership. VIVO points can be cashed in
for prizes of the students’ choice. Bronze, Silver and Gold awards have also been handed out to year 7
students as they reach set milestones. Congratulations to the first eight year 7 students who have
reached the Gold level (1000 vivos):
Atoc Malou, Amuor Malou, William Bailey,
Byron White, Seth Adams, Jack Mullarvey,
Jarrod Vella-Beattie and Joshua Byrne
Over the last semester, selected Year 7 students
have had the opportunity to attend the PCYC with
Ms Shaw to volunteer within the community by
distributing food parcels. The students that have
attended have attracted extremely positive
feedback about their conduct during the program.
Well done!
In Week 8, Chifley College Shalvey Campus will be
conducting a compulsory Swim & Survive Program
for all Year 7 students across 3 days at Emerton
Leisure Centre. Students will be working towards
Swim and Survival Awards of the Royal Lifesaving
Society of Australia.
All students from non-swimmers to very competent
swimmers will be catered for. This is an excellent
program for students to learn and/or improve their
swimming ability, a necessary skill in Australia.
Students will take part in activities that improve
water awareness, first aid, water safety and rescue
techniques.
I look forward to another exciting year next year as we enter Year 8!

Sport and PDHPE – Semester 2
Here at Chifley College Shalvey Campus students are given the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities focusing on making healthy decisions and empowering their friends and family in the community to do the same. Sport and PDHPE lessons provide students the opportunity to develop skills that promote healthy lifestyles.
In Term 3, Year 7 students from each Chifley College campus finally got to experience a Year 7 Sports Gala Day. The day was held at Whalan Reserve and students competed in Touch and Cricket round robins against the other campuses. Our students were extremely cooperative and displayed enthusiasm and commitment throughout their games. We are so proud of the students' behaviour and participation levels in their first gala day event.
In Term 3, Year 7 participated in the Premiers Sporting Challenge which asked them to record and analyse their physical activity levels in order to plan for improvements in the future. It is recommended that Year 7 students should be active for at least 60 minutes a day in moderate to vigorous activities to maintain positive levels of health and fitness.
Also in Term 3, Amuor and Atoc (Year 7) and Savahna (Year 8) joined The Run Beyond Project. The aim of the project is to teach students goal setting, commitment, resilience and to foster a sense of belonging using running as a medium. The girls participated in morning and afternoon training sessions with Ms Shaw and over the term, the sessions increased in distance and skill. The girls trained hard and showed their commitment in a tough 9.2km trail run in Lawson at the end of September. Amazing work girls – we are so proud of you!
Congratulations to our Shalvey Campus Girls Rugby League team who consistently proved themselves throughout a tough season, before winning the grandfinal of the Penrith Schoolgirls Rugby League competition in September. Our girls won the grandfinal in what was a very intense game, winning 18-12 against Glenmore Park HS. Thank you to Mr Bergan for giving the girls the opportunity to participate in this competition. Well done girls!
Later this term, Year 7 will have the opportunity to participate in our Swim and Survive Program. The program caters for all swimming abilities and emphasises personal safety, rescues and fitness. It is sure to be one of the most enjoyable weeks for Year 7 in 2016.
Food Technology
Term 4 has been busy in the kitchens. 8DTI served up some
delicious nachos as can be seen with Ben and Susana who
make a great team.
Year 10 Food Technology students produced quality
chocolate and pastry creations - a fantastic effort. After
making the puff pastry bases and melting chocolate,
students practiced making chocolate curls and fancy shapes
to decorate their dessert. They had to choose the best to
present to the class which can be seen in the photos below.
Atheen and Kikite from Yr 10 worked hard on their
procedure and presentation of the noodle omelette. It’s
amazing what can be done with two minute noodles, some
eggs and a few leftovers.
Jarrod shows his presentation skills and it is pleasing to note
the organised workspace behind him – no dirty dishes in this
stack.
I have been very proud of the achievements from the
Technology Mandatory and Food Technology students this
year. Keep up the great work in 2017.
Happy holiday cooking to all!!
Mrs Mudiman
Shalvey Campus F1 Team – State Champions
During Term 2 and 3, some of our Year 10
students attended Mount Druitt TAFE every
Thursday to work on their entry for The
Formula 1 in Schools Technology Challenge.
Through the use of Computer Aided Design and
research along with patience to continually
tweak the design of their car, Jack, Fale and
Mathew entered the regional competition in
the Senior Cadet Class.
The boys’ design was tested through a series of
races. The competition lasted for two days and
the boys came away with second position, only
missing out on winning by the narrowest of
margins. This was enough to secure the boys a
place in the State Finals.
The boys left the regional competition with
work ahead of them. They knew they needed
to make some adjustments to their car if they
were going to win the competition. Through
evenings of hard work and under the continued
guidance of Matt Snape from Mount Druitt
TAFE who mentored the boys throughout the
entire process, they were able to submit a
vehicle they were happy with.
Their hard work paid off and after racing their
model against teams from a range of schools
across the state, Team Atomics became State
Champions.
The boys would like to thank Matt Snape for all that he taught them
throughout the program. They would also like to make a special
mention to Daniel Hales whose sponsorship made this whole
program possible.
Congratulations boys!

Student Uniform
Spring is in the air and with the warmer weather upon us, we would like to remind students and families of summer uniform requirements. The wearing of school uniforms by students assists school communities in: defining an identity for the school within its community
developing students’ sense of belonging to the school community
promoting a sense of inclusiveness, non-discrimination and equal opportunity
promoting positive community perceptions of public education
increasing the personal safety of students and staff by allowing easier recognition of visitors and potential intruders in the school
Please note that only navy shorts, trousers and trackpants should be worn.
All students must wear leather enclosed shoes to all practical subjects, particularly technology subjects and science, which is mandatory for all students. This is a WH&S requirement and will be strictly enforced.
The following school uniform items can be purchased from the school office anytime during school hours. Everyday polo shirt $32.00 Sports polo shirt $25.00 College shorts $22.00 College sloppy joe $25.00 Microfibre trackpants $25.00
