E rano 13 le chieseesistenti a Trezzointorno alla metà del

XVI secolo, descritte negliatti della visita pastoralecompiuta da San CarloBorromeo nel 1566. SantaMarta dei Disciplini, ilpriorato di San Bartolomeo,Santo Stefano, SanDomenico, Santa Caterinain Arce, il priorato di SanBenedetto, San Michele, SanMartino, San Lorenzo, SanGiorgio in Baraggia, SanVincenzo in Bernate, SantaMaria Assunta alla Rocca ela chiesa dei Santi Maria eNazzaro in Concesa. Unnumero così alto di edificireligiosi conferma cheTrezzo era già allora uncentro importante, con unavasta e articolatapopolazione. Appartenevaall’ampia pieve di Pontirolo,che abbracciava le due rivedell’Adda, e i suoi abitantinon risiedevano solo nelpiccolo borgo medievalestretto attorno all’anticocastello, ma vivevano anchefuori le mura, per coltivare iterreni attorno. Poche diqueste chiese esistonoancora: di alcune resta solouna traccia in documentistorici, di altre solo ilricordo nei nomi di antichiquartieri.

Around mid 16th centurythere were 13 churches in

Trezzo, as described in thedocuments regarding thepastoral visit of Saint CarloBorromeo in 1566. SaintMartha of Disciplines, thepriory of Saint Bartholomew,Saint Stephen, SaintDominic, Saint Catherine inArce, the priory of SaintBenedict, Saint Michel, SaintMartin, Saint Lorenz, SaintGeorge in Baraggia, SaintVincent in Bernate, SaintMary of Assumption in thefortress and St Maria andNazaire’s church in Concesa.Such a great number of reli-gious buildings demonstratesthat Trezzo was an important centre, alreadywith many inhabitants bythat time. It belonged to thevast parish church ofPontirolo, which encompas-sed the two banks of theAdda river. Its inhabitantsdid not live only in the smallmedieval village around theold castle but also outsidethe walls, to work the landssurrounding it.Few of these churches stillexist; there is only a referencein historical documents ofsome of them, while of othersthere is only the memory inthe names of ancient cityareas.

La Preposituraledei Santi Gervasoe ProtasoAnche se profondi e ripetutirestauri ne hanno alterato ilvolto originario, la chiesaprepositurale di Trezzo,dedicata ai protomartiriambrosiani Gervaso eProtaso, conserva unasolennità antica. Già in undocumento del 1414 sinomina infatti questoedificio di culto, allorasituato all’esterno del borgomedievale e dedicato aSanta Maria del Crino. Chequesta chiesa fosse già dalleorigini qualcosa di ben piùimportante di una semplicepieve campestre lodimostrano le dimensionistesse e il fatto che già agliinizi del XVI secolo subìuna prima, importantetrasformazione nella parteabsidale. A questi primiinterventi sulla struttura deltempio si aggiunsero poinuovi decori e laricostruzione di alcune sueparti, come le volte chericoprivano le navate. St. Gervaso and Protaso’sProvost ChurchEven though repeated andprofound restorations havemodified the original facade,the provost church of Trezzo,dedicated to the Ambrosianprotomartyrs Gervaso andProtaso, still keeps its ancientsolemnity. In fact, this reli-gious building had alreadybeen mentioned in a docu-ment of 1414. At that time itwas situated outside the smallmedieval village and wasdedicated to Saint Mary ofCrino. Its size and the factthat the first important chan-ges in its apsidal section hadalready occurred at the begin-ning of the 16th centurydemonstrate that this churchwas considered, from its ori-gins, something more than amere country parish church.After the first work on the

della Pieve di Pontirolo e lacreazione del Vicariato diTrezzo, la chiesa divenne,con decreto del cardinalFederico Borromeo, sede diprepositura plebana. Ma è ilprofondo interventoeffettuato da GaetanoMoretti nella prima metàdel Novecento a definirne leforme attuali, riconfermatedal restauro del 1990-95,effettuato con lasupervisione dellaSoprintendenza dei BeniAmbientali e Artistici dellaLombardia.

L’esternoCiò che oggi si coglie dellaprepositurale dei SantiGervaso e Protaso si deveinfatti al desiderio diGaetano Moretti direstituire all’edificio glioriginali caratteriromanici, cancellati daampliamenti cinque-seicenteschi. Ma nel suointervento architettonico,iniziato nel 1910 con lacostruzione di un nuovocampanile e proseguitofino agli anni ’30 delNovecento, l’architettomilanese interpretò icanoni dell’arte lombardasecondo il gustoneomedievale del tempo,aggiungendo alle sobrie

The exteriorWhat is now possible toadmire of St Gervaso andProtaso’s parish church is dueto Gaetano Moretti’s desire togive the edifice back its origi-nal Romanesque featureswhich had been eliminated byenlargement work in 1500and 1600. In the architecturalwork, begun in 1910 with theconstruction of a new bell-tower and continued until the

riconoscono – seppurrivisitati alla luce di unasensibilità più “moderna” -soprattutto nell’arco acutodelle finestrelle e delportale, nel rosonecentrale, nei pinnacolisopra il frontone.Anche le cappelle chesporgono lungo il fiancosettentrionale della chiesasono una liberainterpretazione di Moretti,che nel 1907 disegnò ancheil nuovo campanile.Questo, alto ben 75 metri,fu eretto in sostituzionedell’antica torrecampanaria, demolitaperché ormai pericolante.Di tutto il complessoarchitettonico della chiesa èl’abside a pianta poligonalel’elemento che meglioconserva il carattereaustero dell’architetturamedievale, con pilastri dipietra a scandire ciascunodegli angoli e un’esile fasciaverticale come sobriadecorazione.

L’internoAnche nel maestosointerno la costruzioneconferma la sua anticaorigine. L’edificio sipresenta, infatti, con lastruttura tipica di unachiesa romanica a pianta

ancient Lombard buildings.There are clear references tothe Romanesque style on thepointed arch of small win-dows and of the portal, on therose-window and in the pin-nacles on the gable.Even the chapels which aresituated along the north sideof the church are the result offree interpretation by Moretti,who also designed the newbell-tower in 1907. This one,which was a good 75 metreshigh, was erected to replacethe ancient steeple, demolis-hed because it was unsafe.The apse with a polygonalground plan is the element ofthe whole architectural struc-ture of the church whichmaintains the austere charac-ter of the medieval architectu-re, with stone columns in eachangle and a small uprightbar-like ornamentation.

The interiorThe building also confirms itsancient origin in its majesticinterior. The edifice, in fact,has a structure typical of aRomanesque basilical church,clearly oriented to the east. Ithas three naves; the two late-ral ones each end with chapelsin line with the main altar;the central nave ends in adeep polygonal apse, whichstill has many frescos. The

basilicale, perfettamenteorientata a levante. Tre lenavate: le due laterali siconcludono con altrettantecappelle, in linea con l’altaremaggiore; quella centraletermina in una profondaabside poligonale, ancorariccamente affrescata. Valela pena compiere una visitaattenta, perché le opered’arte qui custodite – spessodi notevole valore –raccontano la lunga storiadi questa importante chiesa.Su due pilastri della navatadestra si riconosconotracce della decorazionepittorica originaria (XIVsecolo). Sono affreschi diascendenza giottesca,piccoli frammenti cheraffigurano il volto diCristo e una delicataMadonna col Bambino. Infondo alla navata si apre lacappella del Crocifisso, giàappartenente alla chiesaprimitiva (Santa Maria delCrino). È questa la partepiù antica e intatta deltempio, come testimonia lasua preziosa decorazionead affresco risalente al1362. Si riconoscono nellavolta a crociera le figure deiquattro evangelisti, mentrespicca sulla parete di fondouna bellissimaCrocifissione, che ricorda

analoghe composizioniravennate. Scavato nellaparete di destra è unpiccolo tabernacolo anicchia, forse antecedentealle stesse pitture. Nellacappella è custodita ancheuna statua medievaleraffigurante San Benedetto:si tratta di un’opera lignearisalente al XII-XIII secolo,con tutta probabilitàproveniente dall’abbaziafrancese di Cluny erinvenuta presso l’abbaziabenedettina di Trezzo(località Portesana).Spicca nel presbiterio ilmonumentale altaremaggiore, operasettecentesca con intarsi dimarmi policromi. A lungogli studiosi hanno assegnatoai fratelli Campi diCremona – e specialmente aBernardino – il grandedipinto dell’abside, cheraffigura l’ascensione diCristo al cielo e la discesadello Spirito Santo sopra laVergine, gli apostoli e idiscepoli. Alcuni studi piùrecenti, soprattutto inseguito ai restauri del 1990-95, tendono invece adattribuire questo affrescocinquecentesco, che rivestela volta e le pareti del coro,alla scuola di BernardinoLuini.

E’ interessante notare chepoco sopra gli stalli ligneiaffiora un frammentoappartenente a un dipintopiù antico, che raffigurauna Madonna col Bambinotra i santi Ambrogio,Gervaso e Protaso. Più inbasso, proprio al centro delcoro, un raffinatotabernacolo marmoreo dietà rinascimentaletestimonia l’anticaconsuetudine di custodirel’Eucarestia dietro l’altaremaggiore.A sinistra del presbiterio siapre la cappella del SacroCuore, che in una nicchiadella parete destra conservaun’antica croce di legno.Più che per un valoreartistico il manufattomerita attenzione per il suosignificato storico ereligioso. Questa croce, incui veniva incastonata lareliquia del Sacro Chiodo(oggi conservata nelDuomo di Milano), venneinfatti portata inprocessione da San Carloper le vie di Milanodurante la grande peste del1576-77. Contemporanei airestauri di Gaetano Morettisono invece i grandi dipintidi Ludovico Pogliaghi, chefu pittore, scultore escenografo, e la cancellata

It is a woo-den work of the 12th-13thcentury which, in all probabi-lity, comes from the Frenchabbey of Cluny and was dis-covered in the Benedictineabbey in Trezzo (Portesana).The monumental eighteenth-century main altar, with pie-ces of multicoloured marble issituated in the sanctuary. Forsome time, researchers haveascribed the big painting ofthe apse which represents theascension of Christ to the skyand the descent of the HolySpirit upon the Virgin, theapostles and the Disciples tobrothers Campi of Cremona –Bernardino in particular.Some recent studies, in parti-cular those carried out afterthe restoration work of 1990-95, seem to attribute this six-teenth-century fresco coveringthe vault and the walls of thechoir at the school ofBernardino Luini.It is interesting to notice thatjust above the wooden stallsthere is a fragment belongingto a more ancient painting,which represents a Madonnawith the infant Jesus betweenSaints Ambrogio, Gervasoand Protaso.Beneath, in the centre of the

This building iswell worth considerationmore for its historical andreligious meaning than for itsartistic value. This cross, inwhich the relic of the SacredNail was inserted (nowadaysit is preserved in the Dome ofMilan), was carried in a pro-cession in the streets of Milanduring the great plague of1576-77 by Saint Charles.While Gaetano Moretti car-ried out restoration work,Ludovico Pogliali, painter,sculptor and scenographer,painted great pictures andAlessandro Mazzucotelli, oneof the most interesting inter-preters of Art Nouveau deco-rative arts in Milan andLombardy, brought to life thewrought iron railing.Thanks to the work of the firstyears of the 20th centurythree chapels were opened inthe left nave. The ReginaPacis Chapel, closed by awrought iron railing of thelate 16th century is dedicatedto the fallen of 1915-18.

La prima cappelladella navata sinistra èquella del Battistero,realizzato da GaetanoMoretti intorno al 1930; ilfonte battesimale e lastruttura lignea che loracchiude risalgono però alXVIII secolo.

Above the altar one admiresthe Madonna with the infantJesus, a marble fourteenth-century statue, It is attribu-table to the circle of Mastersfrom Campione, expert lapi-cides. Then there is St Joseph’sChapel, with a painting ofLudovico Pogliaghi represen-ting the saint himself. The fre-scos on the lateral walls, of anunknown author, are veryinteresting for their historicalvalue. On the right wallSaint Gaetano, co-patronsaint of the parish church, isrecognizable. On the left wallthe scene of Saint Charleswho carries the wooden crosspreserved in the Chapel of theSacred Heart is painted. Onthe wall of the nave, to the leftof Saint Joseph’s chapel, aniron railing protects a mar-moreal basso-rilievo repre-senting Christ laid from theCross. It is undoubtedly aneoclassical work of the early19th century but the author isunknown. The first chapel tothe left of the naves is that ofthe Baptistery, realized byGaetano Moretti around1930s; the baptismal fountainand the wooden structuredate back to the 18th century.

L’Oratoriodi San RoccoFederico Borromeo, dopola visita pastorale del 1609,già segnala a Trezzol’esistenza di un piccoloedificio di culto, dedicato aSan Rocco. Nella suarelazione il cardinalemilanese parladiffusamente di unoratorio poco distantedalla chiesa prepositurale(distantem ab ecclesiaprepositurali passus fereduecentum) e di recentecostruzione (non multis abhic annis costructum). Diceanche che venne erettoquale sede di unaconfraternita di Disciplini,

Saint Rocco’s OratoryFederico Borromeo, after hispastoral visit in 1609, hadalready noticed the existencein Trezzo of an edifice ofworship, dedicated to SaintRocco. In his memorandum,the Milanese cardinal descri-bes an oratory recently built(“non multis ab hic anniscostructum”) not far from theprovost church (“distantemab ecclesia prepositurali pas-sus fere duecentum”) atlength. He also says that it waserected like a seat of a confra-ternity of Disciples, whichdevoted itself to works of cha-rity and assistance, especiallyduring plague epidemics.Thanks to this historical docu-

che si dedicava a opere dicarità e di assistenzasoprattutto durante leepidemie di peste. Anche inbase a questo documentostorico si può dare percerta la fondazionedell’edificio agli ultimidecenni del XVI secolo, contutta probabilità agli anniimmediatamente successivila grande peste del 1576.Un’ulteriore conferma dellegame tra il piccolotempio e le vicende dellapeste è data dalla suadedicazione: San Roccovenne infatti spessoinvocato dalla popolazione- solo o con San Sebastiano -come protettore degliappestati.

L’antico edificioDall’esame diretto delmonumento e dall’analisiaccurata dei documenti diarchivio si può riteneredunque che già alla fine delCinquecento esistesse aTrezzo la chiesa di SanRocco. Si trattava di unpiccolo edificio sacro a unasola navata, la cui semplicestruttura corrispondevanelle linee e nelleproporzioni ai caratteritipici di molti oratorilombardi, eretti ai tempidella Controriforma

The ancient edificeObserving the monumentand carefully analysing thefiled documents, it is possibleto think that Saint Rocco’schurch existed in Trezzoalready by the end of the 16thcentury. It was a small reli-gious building with only onenave, whose simple structurewas similar in the lines andproportions with otherLombard oratories erected by

secondo le disposizioniimpartite dallo stesso SanCarlo Borromeo.Nella sua forma originaria,la chiesa di San Rocco sipresentava come unedificio ad aula unica,coperta da un soffittoligneo e conclusa da unpresbiterio rettangolarecon copertura a volta. Lemodifiche più consistentiriguardarono proprio lafacciata, che nella secondametà del XVII secolo futrasformata con l’aggiuntadi un avancorpo a portico.I lavori di ampliamento etrasformazione del tempiosi protrassero per moltianni: questo il motivo percui nell’attuale prospetto siriconoscono elementistilistici diversi, con archi elesene che già rivelano ungusto settecentesco.

In 1855, the owner deci-ded to sell the spinnery-con-vent and the whole edifice wasbought again by discalceateCarmelites who returned inConcesa in 1857. After years ofneglect, work to restore theancient splendour to the place,that equal to today, began. Theconvent and the Sanctuaryexperienced important resto-ration work between 1873 and1885. The church, with only anave with 2 chapels on bothsides, was embellished with

Lastoria di questa statua – altapoco più di 50 centimetri -risale alla seconda metàdegli anni ’40 del Novecentoquando, per convogliare leacque dell’Adda da Concesaalla nuova centraleidroelettrica di Vaprio, fuprogettata una galleria lungacirca 4000 metri. I minatoriche lavorarono alla suarealizzazione posero nel

In 1964, the piece ofwall with the fresco of theMadonna of the boatman wasrecovered in the garden of theconvent, protected by a smalltemple. This was the firstimportant step toward therecovery of this masterpiecewhich was restored in 1986.On 19th October of the sameyear, a historic parade withtraditional barges pulled byhorses and characters in fif-teenth-century costumesbrought the Madonna of theBoatman into the convent ofConcesa, near its waterway.

Saint’s Barbara statueIn the square near theSanctuary, a little statue repre-senting Saint Barbara, patronsaint of miners, artillerymenand firemen is inserted in aCeppo stone. The story of thisstatue – little more than 50centimetres high – dates backto the second half of the 1940’s,when a 4000-metre-long gal-lery was projected to conveywaters of the Adda River fromConcesa to the new hydro-elec-tric power station in Vaprio.Miners laid an image of the

San Benedettoin PortesanaDistante un paio dichilometri dal centro diTrezzo, come nascosta inun angolo che conservamiracolosamente intatti icaratteri ambientali di untempo, sorge una vecchiacascina denominata SanBenedetto in Portesana,ancora oggi abitata da una

patron saint in the adit – justunder the square of the sanc-tuary – asking for her help fordifficult work. In 2001, littleSaint Barbara was brought tolight and was given to the dis-calceate Carmelites of the con-vent of Concesa marking the50th anniversary of the end ofwork.

Saint Benedict in PortesanaAn ancient farmhouse calledSaint Benedict in Portesana issituated a couple of kilometresaway from the centre of Trezzo,nearly hidden in an anglewhich still maintains all theenvironmental features of thetimes. A family of farmers stilllives in it. At the centre of a lar-ge farm, on the rock edge thatlooks over the Adda River, it isan edifice with a closed court-yard, according to the typical

famiglia contadina. Alcentro di un vasto podere,sull’orlo di un bancoroccioso che dominal’Adda, si presenta come uncomplesso a corte chiusa,secondo i modi tipicidell’architettura ruralelombarda. La sua storia èdavvero antica, visto che lafondazione dell’edificio èdocumentata in un atto del1088, nel quale si ricorda ladonazione da parte diAngilberto di Trezzo e diGiselberto figlio diAriprando di Colnago –entrambi di stirpelongobarda – di 16 ettari diterra all’abate Ugo diCluny. Così, in quel tempocosì lontano, qui sorse unaminuscola abbazia chedipendeva direttamentedall’abate di Cluny. Inorigine il monastero eracostituito da due fabbricati,uno parallelo al fiume (indirezione est-ovest) el’altro perpendicolare.All’incrocio tra i due braccis’innalzava la piccolacappella, dedicata a SanBenedetto, fondatoredell’Ordine. Più tardi unmuro a forma di ‘elle’ sicontrappose ai due edifici,dando all’intero complessoquell’aspetto di compattoblocco quadrangolare che

Infact its foundation is reportedin a Declaration of 1088, inwhich the donation of 16 hec-tares of land by Angilberto ofTrezzo and of Giselberto son ofAriprando of Colnago – both ofLongobard stock – to AbbotUgo of Cluny. Consequently, inthat period, a very small abbeythat depended directly on theAbbot of Cluny was born. Atthe beginning, the monasterywas made up of two edifices,one parallel to the river (north-east direction) and the otherone perpendicular. A smallchapel dedicated to SaintBenedict, creator of the Order,was situated in the intersec-tion. Later, an L-shaped wallwas added to the two edificesso that the whole building see-med a quadrangular block, asit is today. In this block, a largegarden was used more for agri-cultural activities than for pra-yers. Like all the religiousBenedict centres, the SaintBenedict of Portesana abbeywas first of all a place of workwith only an abbot, two orthree monks and a large num-ber of convert-brothers whohad to work the land.

ancora oggi conserva.All’interno venne così aformarsi un vasto cortile,certo più adatto alle attivitàagricole che alla preghiera.Come tutti i centri religiosibenedettini, l’abbazia diSan Benedetto in Portesanaera infatti prima di tuttoun luogo di lavoro, cheospitava solo un abate, dueo tre monaci e numero piùalto di conversi, incaricatidi lavorare la terra.

La cappelladi San BenedettoI lunghi secoli di incuria edi abbandono non sonoriusciti a cancellare del tuttoi caratteri originaridell’antico complessomonastico, ancora leggibilinonostante i rustici edificiche in tempi diversi venneroaddossati al muro di cinta eall’interno del vasto cortile.Nel blocco compatto diforma quadrata, con spigolisegnati da grossi massi,spicca l’abside dellacappella, ritmata da esilicolonnine e da strati diciottoli di fiume alternati afasci di ceppo dell’Adda. Lacappella dell’antica abbaziabenedettina è un’aula diforma quasi quadrata(metri 4,50 x 5), affiancata amo’ di transetto da due aule

Notevole il rilievoromanico sopra la piccolaporta aperta sul cortileinterno: nell’architrave inpietra sono scolpiti un lupoe un agnello.I documenti testimonianoche verso la fine del XVIIIsecolo il complesso di SanBenedetto in Portesanaaveva perso del tutto i suoicaratteri religiosi,trasformandosi in unsemplice cascinale ad usoagricolo, con una piccolachiesa sconsacrata e inrovina. Nel 1927, ilproprietario del fondo, lodonò all’Opera Pia SanBenedetto, che ne mantennee rafforzò le funzioni dirustica cascina. Certoquesto ha permesso diconservare pressoché intattele costruzioni e l’ambienteattorno, ma da tempol’antica abbazia di SanBenedetto richiede urgentiinterventi di restauro. Lasalvaguardia dell’ambienteoriginario, un’attenta operadi recupero delle antichestrutture e la creazione dipercorsi di visitaconsentirebbero infatti divalorizzare come merital’intero complesso,importante tassello nellastoria di Trezzo e del suoterritorio.

Documents report that, at theend of the 18th century, SaintBenedict’s had lost all its reli-gious features, becoming asimple farmhouse for agricul-tural activities, with a smallchurch deconsecrated and inruin. The owner of the landgave it to Saint Benedict’s cha-ritable institution in 1927,who kept up the agriculturalactivities. This allows the pre-servation of the building andthe leaves of the surroundingenvironment almost undama-ged – but the ancient SaintBenedict’s farmhouse has nee-ded urgent restoration workfor some time. The protectionof the original environment, acareful restoration of theancient structures and thecreation of visitation routeswould give merit and valour tothe whole complex, an impor-tant part in the history ofTrezzo and of its territory.
