The Open Innovation Journey at GSK

The innovation process within the GSK Consumer Healthcare Skin Health division has just been developed. The process is based on experience gained within P&G and J&J. I will describe how we developed the process and implemented it within GSK and the challenges in developing this cosmetic approach within a Pharmaceutical company. The talk will describe how we utilise Open Innovation and external facing technical collaboration to strengthen our technical pipeline; plus how we are developing fast iterative testing to develop new skin health products.

Global vs Local?

There is no one global model to optimise Innovation success (structure/ way of working) but depends at different times on business needs and regions’ readiness.

I will discuss 3 models we have used with advantages and disadvantages and our current preferences.

Innovation Implementation - Outcomes & Lessons Learnt

As one of the top investors in R&D in the UK, BT runs a comprehensive programme of research and innovation, including academic partnerships, external scouting, new commercial proposition development, prototyping and trialling with customers. In the last 12 months, BT has introduced BT Infinity Labs, a new programme of engagement with Tech City start-ups to identify innovations that can support product d i f ferent iat ion and growth. This session looks back at the outcomes and lessons learnt.

The Innovation Principle

In October 2013 twelve CEOs* of major multinational companies signed a letter to Presidents of the three EU institutions, proposing adoption of the Innovation Principle, in order to ensure that when precautionary legislation is under consideration its impact on innovation should also be taken into account. The CEOs who collectively invested !21 billion a year in innovation also expressed their deep concern over the negative effect that increasingly risk-averse legislation is having on the European innovation climate.

Innovation at Scale

The NHS employs approximately 1.3 million staff; 54% of these staff are health care professions and managers. The dominant model of innovation at scale has been top-down: a ‘heady mix’ of exhortation, expectation and encouragement. This paper sets out an alternative approach – NHS must engage fully with a bottom-up approach through education as the primary means of promotion.

Seb ChakrabortyDirector, Technology British Gas Connected Homes

Seb is Director of Technology at British Gas Connected Homes. He and his team are proud to innovating and introduce new products that solve real problems.

In his previous role he was CTO for Telefonica Digital UK. Here he led the technology for new UK businesses, in Advertising, Big Data Analytics and Mobile Payments.

He has a Master degree from the University of Sussex in Knowledge Based Systems. He lives in North London with his wife and 3 young children.

Growth Through Innovation

Innovation is powered by inspiration, but measured in realization – yet as innovation grows increasingly vital to the growth prospects of big businesses and startups alike, the failure rates of innovation projects remain absurdly high. Far too many mission-critical initiatives culminate in what Fahrenheit 212 calls unicorns – visions that are lovely to think about, but doable and profitable only in some remote, imaginary world. Managing Partner Peter Maulik will share behind the scenes stories that will provide you with lessons and principles that you can apply to your own innovation initiatives come Monday morning.

British Gas' Start Up Journey to Meet Customer Needs

British Gas has been driving an innovation culture inside the organisation. A clear example of this is the success of the brand known as Hive and it’s smart thermostat product. A product which has seen rapid customer growth beyond 100,000.

The business unit of Connected Homes was set-up as an innovation hub at the tail end of 2012. It's primary focus was on IOT products like Hive Active Heating. It also covers innovations like self-diagnosing boilers and smart-metering solutions. All with the potential to transform customer
