Local NewsYour chance to celebrate the ‘best of British’ at this year’s Chichester Local Food Fare VISITORS can join in and celebrate the ‘best of British’ at the fifth Chichester Local Food Fare from today (Friday 14) to Sunday 16 September.

“This year, tying in with all the celebrations 2012 has to offer, we have a ‘best of British’ theme. We have some great competitions for visitors of all ages. There will be a Food Fare quiz for children, where they can win £25 in vouchers. There’s also a competition for all the family - come to the Food Fare dressed up as the ‘best of British’, and you could win either a Food Fare hamper or £25 in vouchers. Simply pop over to the council’s stall by the Cross and have your photo taken and then we will choose the best adult and best child costume,” says Cllr John Connor, Cabinet Member for Environment at Chichester District Council.

“The Food Fare is run by our Farmers Markets’ team to give local businesses, some who cannot appear at the market on a regular basis, a chance to show what culinary delights are available in our area. The event is run at no cost to the public purse.”

Up to 50 local stalls will set up each day in North Street and East Street. Choose from: a range of specialist cheeses; seasonal locally grown fruit and vegetables; reared meat and

caught game; a wide range of handmade foods, from baked goods to curries; and, much more.

Visitors can enjoy the delicious foods available, or relax in one of the City’s many cafés and restaurants.

Younger visitors can enjoy a mobile farm on site on Sunday (16 Sep). This will take

place on Magnus Court, behind Marks and Spencer.

Opening times are 9am-5pm on Friday (14 Sep) and Saturday (15 Sep), and 10am-4pm on Sunday (16 Sep). For the latest information about Food Fare activities visit www.chichester.gov.uk/foodfare or call 01243 785166.

Jail sentence for counterfeit jewellery seller welcomedA CHICHESTER internet trader who sold fake jewellery online for several years is beginning a 16-month prison term.

Desmond Fox, 45, was sentenced at Chichester Crown Court after an investigation by West Sussex County Council’s Trading Standards Service.

He pleaded guilty to 15 offences under the Trade Marks Act 1994.

They all related to the supply of fake Pandora, Links and Tiffany jewellery sold from his on-line business, and the subsequent seizure of £50,000 worth of stock discovered when search warrants were executed on his home and two other premises.

The investigation was launched after consumer complaints were received by Trading Standards.

Fox, of Albert Road, Chichester, had been trading for a number of years through a website and on-line auction site, and a financial investigation showed that he had turned over approximately £145,000.

“This was selling counterfeit goods to consumers on a large scale”, said Christine Field, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Protection. “The judge made it clear this was a deterrent sentence, and I hope that others involved in these sort of offences will take due notice.

“Crimes like this undermine the legitimate business economy, and Trading Standards

will always act to protect local businesses from being harmed, and consumers from being cheated.”

The Crown Court judge made a forfeiture order for all the fake goods seized during the operation, some of which also falsely bore indications they were made of silver.

The judge said the offending was “professional” and “went on far too long”.

The Trading Standards investigation and jail term has been welcomed by genuine dealers in Pandora, Links and Tiffany products.

Gemma Clive, of Pressleys Jewellers in Chichester, said: “The counterfeit jewellery trade makes the consumer especially vulnerable through misinformation and poor quality goods.

“This in turn leaves people disappointed with items that are often less durable, susceptible to breaking and lacking any kind of aftercare service should this eventuality arise.

“Clamping down on this will benefit both retailers and customers alike.”

Anyone who suspects someone is trading in counterfeit goods can report the matter to Trading Standards by ringing Citizens’ Advice Consumer Services on 08454 04 05 06.

Alternatively, you can fill out a form online by visiting the consumer advice page at www.westsussex.gov.uk

HILLSBOROUGHThe stadiums were all potential death traps. They were horrendous, but no-one, to my knowledge, tried to fix them. It took 96 terrible deaths and a noble campaign for justice to change all that. And change a lot more besides. Like it took Dunblane to change our gun laws. Pity we can’t get a bit more ahead of things.

THE EXAM FUROREThere’s something likable about Michael Gove’s disregard for likeability. He may care a bit more when the kids whose exam results he appears to have downgraded reach voting age. And he’s the leader of the Tories…

CHICHESTER SERVICEOur letter box broke, the spring snapped. I went down to Dyson King Ironmongers in Quarry Lane for a new one but they didn’t have one that fitted. The bloke asked to see my old one, took it out the back, dismantled it and produced a box of springs. He fitted a new one. “Call it a couple of quid” he said. I was embarrassed. I’d expected to be spending £50, so I only had a debit card. “Aw forget it then” he said. “Drop a couple of quid in next time you’re passing.”

CHICHESTER SERVICE 28.30am Saturday morning. I’m standing waiting for Halfords up at the Sainsbury’s

roundabout to open (9.00am) to see if they have a gas canister for our WW2 gas stove as we’re trying to get to Wittering beach before the rush. A girl in a Halfords uniform is slipping in to get ready for work. “Excuse me” says I, “I know you’re not on the clock yet, but do you sell little gas canisters?” She replied “I think we’ve sold out, but worth a try.” I hung around and went in as the doors opened. A cry went up from the till “Sir! I have your gas.” She’d gone and found what I wanted and had it stood by her till.

WITTERINGFed our immortal soul. Ten thousand people playing active fun stuff with their children; footy, cricket, paddling, teaching them to swim. BBQ smells, sea salt on your skin, sand rubbing into your folds.

BBC SPORTS PERSONALITYGo on then, who would you vote for? No

seriously, who has been the greatest this year? If push came to shove, I would vote; 1. Andy Murray 2. Mo Farah 3. Bradley Wiggins.

DIVERSITYThere’s a photo hangs in our house of my dad with Muhammad Ali. A gnarled Geordie squaring up to a glowing black icon. A visiting youngster round our house asked who was in the picture. I said “It’s my dad with the greatest sportsman ever.” She said “Oh”. Then asked; “Which one’s your dad?” Brilliant.

JOKELittle boy at the seaside asks his dad for an ice cream, the dad says “No, it’s too cold”. Little boy goes away and thinks about this, comes back; “Dad, if I put my coat on can I have an ice cream?”

Swimmers raise almost £5,000 for charityFORTY-THREE swimmers who collectively swam 62 miles for charity at Westgate Leisure Chichester have raised £4,928.85 for charity.

The swimmers took part in Swimathon Weekend 2012. The money will go to Marie Curie Cancer Care and Sport Relief. The event was held in April.

In total, £2.3 million was raised by swimmers across the country for the event, which is the world’s largest fundraising swim. Westgate Leisure Chichester was one of over 645 pools which took part.

Councillor Eileen Lintill, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Wellbeing and Community Services at Chichester District Council, says: “Well done to everyone who took part. The event brought out a fantastic community spirit at the pool.”

Swimmers completed various distances ranging from the 48 length Sport Relief mile to the 150 length 5k swim for Marie Curie.

Duncan Goodhew MBE, Olympic gold medallist and Swimathon President, said: “Each year, dedicated swimmers of all ages and abilities put in hours of training to raise money for a cause close to their hearts and this year’s event is no exception. The funds raised are a testament to the commitment and perseverance of each and every swimmer and I am absolutely delighted to say that the Swimathon Weekend 2012 has raised an incredible £2.2million so far!”

Police seek Petworth House suspect and stolen plates

DETECTIVES are keen to trace a man following a theft at Petworth House.

This man was seen behaving suspiciously at Petworth House, a National Trust property, on the afternoon of Wednesday 1 August. He was observed trying several locked doors before leaving the premises. He was seen on a number of CCTV cameras and police are releasing an image of him from one of the cameras, hoping that someone will recognise him.

He is described as white, in his fifties, of medium height and heavy build, with short grey hair. He was wearing a beige t-shirt with dark trousers and shoes.

Detective Constable Andrea Watts said: "We believe this may be the same man we want to interview about the theft of two valuable plates from Petworth House."

The pair of Japanese porcelain plates with similar designs were stolen on the afternoon of Thursday 9 February. They are 325mm in diameter, white with blue, orange and green decoration, and have gold edges. Each has a distinctive floral pattern of chrysanthemums and peonies behind orange-coloured fencing in the centre. Around the rims of the plates are further floral decorations of irises, lychees and peonies. The plates were marked by hand on the base with the numbers L/PET/C/99.1 and L/PET/C/99.2. These numbers may have been covered or scratched from the glaze.

If you recognise this man or have knowledge of where these plates may be please contact police on 101 quoting serial 1375 of 1 August. You can also call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Chichester holds anti-trafficking eventA FORMER Metropolitan Police Superintendent and specialist on fighting child trafficking has given a talk to Chichester community members about the crime in rural areas like West Sussex.

Bernie Gravett, who is retired from the Met, now works as a specialist consultant in the fight against the trafficking of children. The former Superintendent has led anti-vice operations against forced labour and the exploitation of women in the sex industry.

Mr Gravett joined South East MEP Catherine Bearder on Friday (7 Sep) at St Pancras Church, Chichester.

The Salvation Army, which holds the government contract to support trafficking victims in England and Wales, sent its national coordinator Anne Read to speak at the event.

Community Police Constable Rob Gillan from Sussex Police also attended.

The event was organised by the Chichester Lib Dems to highlight a growing problem in the south-east. All were welcome to attend the talk with slideshow and mini exhibition on what we can do to help.

In West Sussex on Good Friday (April 6th) this year, two 15 year old girls who had recently arrived from Nigeria went missing on their way to church in Ferring. Sussex Police said they believed the teens were the victim of traffickers. One was later identified at a passport control in Spain. The other teenager is still missing.

A man and a woman, arrested in Enfield, Surrey on Monday 3rd September, have now been charged with trafficking offences in connection with their disappearance as part of a wider vice ring.

Experts say that Gatwick Airport in West Sussex is used by traffickers as a conduit to other countries in Europe.

Sussex Police set up their own specialist unit, Operation Newbridge, for missing African children in 1998.

As well as sexual exploitation, trafficking can include forced labour on farms and in factories, forced begging and domestic servitude.

Elsewhere in the South East, police made a number of arrests following the discovery of a suspected child sex ring in Oxford.

Bernie Gravett said: “Authorities first became aware that West African girls were being trafficked to Italy via the UK when they started disappearing after being taken into the care of West Sussex Social Services following discovery upon arrival at Gatwick airport.

A police operation – Operation Newbridge – was launched and a pattern of trafficking detected.

“Such is their fear of the trafficker that, since 1995, 74 girls have ‘disappeared’ from the care of social services and returned to the men who sneaked them into the country.”

Allis Moss, a Chichester-based journalist,

who helped organise the event, added: “Crimes like this should make people very angry. This event will tell us how to spot what you would never dream of suspecting

was going on in the rural environs of Britain’s counties and shires – but it is. Together, we can try and do something about it.”

Travellers moved on in Chichester to allow for festivalPOLICE, working with the local authority, acted to remove travellers from playing fields at Oaklands Park, Chichester, on Friday (7 Sep).

They used their powers under Section 61 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 to remove the travellers to prevent disruption to the planned Get Active festival taking place on the site on

the Sunday (9 Sep).Sgt Alan Fenn said: "The travellers had

moved on to the site this morning (Friday) but after speaking to them this afternoon they agreed to move on again. This was reinforced by the use of the Section 61 power to ensure the festival could be held on the playing fields tomorrow.

"The travellers left peacefully."

The work, costing approximately £15 million, is part of a West Sussex County Council programme to cope with the large increase in primary numbers.

The initial works has provided an additional 597 places.

In total over the next few years, the County Council will be providing an additional 6,000 places across West Sussex covering all year groups, and work on this has already started.

Some of the building work will be phased as children move up the age range.

Peter Griffiths, West Sussex Cabinet Member for Education and Schools, said: “I am delighted that all the building works

that have taken place during the summer holidays were completed on schedule.

“We have been working hard with school leadership teams, governing bodies and parents during recent months, and there were a series of consultations.

“It shows we are very alive to the surge in primary school numbers that most education authorities are facing.

“This is a huge challenge, but I am confident that working in partnership with our schools, that we will rise to it”.

THIS week, someone I know introduced me to their boyfriend who they had met online. I thought this meant online dating (although they would be a tad young) or even Facebook, but no, they met on Twitter. I’m not really sure how one falls in love with someone over Twitter because it is probably the most public social networking site to date. Not to mention the limit of characters you can use. After spending a short amount of time around them, I heard them saying ‘I love you’ but they had only actually met in person a few times. So is that really enough time to ‘fall in love’ with someone? And how personal is a social networking love?

I don’t know anything about online dating because I’ve obviously never tried it, I am only 16. But being at High School and on Facebook, I can see relationships blooming merely from trying to bump up your friend count, if that counts. The thing that really baffles me is how people can

say ‘I love you’ to someone who they have NEVER met before. I mean from what I’ve gathered from watching adults, it’s not the norm to say ‘I love you’ on the first date, but it seems for some teenagers that ‘I love you’ is part of the pick-up line.

I can understand why adults do actual online dating, but why some teenagers feel the need to date practically everyone on their friends list, I don’t know. It’s not like at 16 there is a pressure to settle down! Not to mention the fact that some of these ‘relationships’ end over an email before they’ve gotten anywhere. What’s the point?

So does this mean that for teenagers ‘love’ doesn’t hold as much value? That it’s thrown around too often without any thought? Maybe so, because even I can admit to saying it too often too soon in the past. But then again everyone has a different definition of what love is to them. And I guess there shouldn’t be an age limit or time limit on it. Now I’m just hoping I’ll get an old fashioned, fairytale, happily-ever-after because I don’t have to think about how unrealistic that is just yet.

It’s a win win situation for St Wilfrid’s and its supportersMORE AND MORE people are joining a special lottery scheme to help raise vital funds for St Wilfrid’s Hospice, Chichester.

Since joining the Local Hospice Lottery in April of this year more than 1,300 game numbers have been purchased.

St Wilfrid’s Trustee Kay Glendinning is among the winners. She has been a member of the lottery since St Wilfrid’s first signed up and said it was a wonderful way in which to raise vital funds for the Hospice.

“I was delighted when I received a letter saying I had won a small prize of £10,” said Kay. “I have heard that other Hospices who are part of a lottery scheme have raised huge amounts of money for their organisations. It’s another way of fundraising and I am hopeful that it will be equally as successful for St Wilfrid’s.”

In July lottery canvassers Barbara Bartsch, Nicholas Hodge and Alan Vawdrey began work visiting homes across St Wilfrid’s Hospice’s catchment area to help boost support for the Local Hospice Lottery scheme and received comprehensive training from Local Hospice Lottery representatives Sue Huggins and Debbie Thornton.

Residents will be able to recognise them from their bright blue T-shirts and fleece jackets which have the St Wilfrid’s and Local Hospice Lottery logos. They also wear

hi-vis jackets and carry identification badges with them at all times when working. Their current hours are 10am-8pm.

When speaking to residents the canvassers will provide information about the lottery scheme and how it can help St Wilfrid’s. Residents are given a choice of payment method: cheque, credit card or standing order, and if paying by standing order, bank account details are requested by the canvassers.

Individuals Fundraising Manager Michelle Sidney said: “We decided that the lottery would broaden our appeal and attract people who might not otherwise donate to St Wilfrid’s and we are very pleased with the results so far. We want to give people as many ways as possible to support us so we can continue to provide specialist palliative care to people across the community.”

The lottery costs just £1 a week to enter. The weekly prizes are:

1st prize: £1,5002nd prize: £400 (with a rollover of up to

£10,000)3rd prize: £100There are also 100 prizes of £10.For more information about taking part

We want your views on crime and disorder in the districtRESIDENTS in the Chichester District are being asked for their views on crime and disorder issues in the area.

The Chichester District Community Safety Partnership (CSP) has launched a questionnaire on what their new priorities should be for 2013-14.

The questionnaire runs until Sunday 11 November.

It asks residents to what extent they feel a range of issues are a problem in their local area such as: criminal damage and burglary; domestic abuse; anti-social behaviour; and under-age drinking.

The results will help shape the partnership’s priorities for next year.

The partnership brings together all the main agencies working to make the district an even safer place to live, work and visit. Members are: Chichester District Council; Sussex Police; West Sussex County Council; West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service; Sussex Police Authority; Western Sussex Primary Care Trust; West Sussex Drug and Alcohol Action Team; and Sussex and Surrey Probation Service.

Visitors to this weekend’s Get Active Festival can meet partnership members and fill the questionnaire at the partnership’s stand. There is also the chance to find out more about the Police and Crime Commissioner elections this November.

Councillor Eileen Lintill, Cabinet Member

for Leisure, Wellbeing and Community Services, says: “In the last two years the partnership has been involved in a number of successes, such as helping to reduce the number of thefts from vehicles in the district by 5% and criminal damage by over 10%. Between April-September 2011 there were 126 fewer anti-social behaviour incidents than the previous year and those involving young people also fell by 77 incidents.

“The questionnaire is an excellent way for local people to say what is important to them. It should only take a couple of minutes to complete and will help shape the way the partnership works and prioritises crime and disorder in different areas.”

The questionnaire is available on the council's website on the Community Safety Partnership page. Paper copies can be requested by contacting the Corporate Information Team at the council on 01243 534623 or by email to [email protected]

Find Me a HomePLAYFUL FROLICS, amusement and keeping watch are essential when you have kittens. Their antics can delight but their adventurous exploration up the curtains and in and out of hidey-holes, and frequent feeding needs can be trying and time-consuming. If there are young children under 3 years old in the home, it is recommended that kitten(s) older than 4 months are adopted so that the competing demands of the youngest kitten(s) and children do not cause stress to the household.

There are 30 young kittens waiting for homes now and some of them are listed below to give an idea of the selection. They are all under 6 months old and there are all colours including ginger, black, grey, tabby and all colours (or combinations) with white. Compatible pairs of kittens from the same litter or rescue pen are available as well as individuals.

• Four 4-month old playful kittens, who love to purr and sit on your lap. 1 grey male, 2 black males and a grey, torty and white female.

• An 18 week tabby and white male and a black male (KM98,99)

• Ginger and white male and a black female with white bib and feet (KM30,KF31-12) now 4 months old.

• Longhaired 4 month old ginger kittens (KM71, 73-12).

• Three two month old friendly, cute white kittens with black marks (K137,138,139-12).

• Four neutered, friendly black and white 5 month old kittens (2 female (KF41,43-12 and 2 male KM40,42-12).

The usual Cat and Rabbit Rescue Adoption Terms and Conditions apply. The Rescue asks for a minimum donation of £45 for each cat and if an unneutered kitten £70, which includes vaccination, microchipping, and neutering at The Rescue before 6 months of age. Free vet insurance for 4 weeks is provided. Visits to Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre are strictly by appointment, Tel: 01243 641409.

Sally Gunnell OBE becomes patron of Sussex Food & Drink AwardsOLYMPIC gold medal winner and inspiration Sally Gunnell OBE has shown her dedication to fresh, local produce by becoming patron of the Sussex Food & Drink Awards this week, organisers announced.

Earlier this year, Sally helped kick off the 2012/13 awards at the South of England Show, revealing that it was eating good, super-fresh ingredients which made the difference to her fitness and allowed her to win gold at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, rather than silver or bronze. Having found out more about the awards, which are all about celebrating the best local food and drink in Sussex, she now wants to be a part of them.

“It is much healthier to eat fresh, local food – and it’s great to support your community at the same time, so I am a huge advocate of eating local,” said Sally Gunnell, who grew up on a farm and has lived in Sussex for many years:

“I enjoy my food – it’s part of my relaxation – I enjoy eating out and the social side of it, sharing something really good - but I also believe we are the role models for our children and I eat fresh and local with them whenever I can – and we’re blessed with fantastic food here in Sussex.”

Said Clive Beddall OBE, Chairman of the Judges: “We are delighted to have Sally on board – this takes the awards to a new level and Sally’s energy and spirit will help us to spread the word even further about the superb local produce made in

Sussex.”Public voting for the best farmers, food

and drink producers, farmers markets, eateries, butchers, local shops and young chef closes at midnight on 14th October. Everyone has one vote per category either

online or through SMS text voting, with all details at www.sussexfoodawards.biz. Voting closes at midnight on October 14 and winners will be revealed at a fabulous Sussex produce banquet at the Amex Stadium on January 31 2013.

University of Chichester students treated to Bollywood Master ClassTHIS SEMESTER all University of Chichester theatre pupils studying Asian theatre will be treated to dancing lessons by world renowned dancer, teacher and choreographer Geetha Sridhar.

On Monday 17 September Geetha Sridhar will perform, teach and help students learn a range of traditional Indian dancing movements and techniques, to further aid their understanding of the roots of Asian theatre.

Geetha underwent formal training in Bharathanatyam at the Kalakshetra College of Fine Arts in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. She performed as a principal artiste with the renowned Chandralekha Dance Company for five years, developed a much respected educational dance programme on Hindu Mythology relating to the origin of the Universe for Tern Television Productions and has won a dance development award from the Scottish Arts council leading to a Bharathanatyam production of ‘Anna Karenina’, which received critical acclaim. Currently based in London, Geetha is a lecturer at The Place – London Contemporary Dance School, Kingston University and at the London School of Carnatic Music.

Students set to enjoy this one-off experience are those who opted for the Bollywood and Beyond module, and who have already studied a host of Asian theatre styles including other traditional dance

styles such as Kathak and Bollywood, as well as Chinese Peking Opera and Japanese Noh and Kabuki Theatre.

Ben Hall, Head of Music at the University of Chichester said: “It’s fantastic having such a renowned and fascinating teacher come to the University of Chichester, Bollywood is a hugely popular dance form and the teachings of the fabulous Geetha Sridhar should go some way to showing pupils where this style originated from. There’s a huge depth to this style of dance which is currently not well documented, this is great opportunity for pupils to find out more.”

WELCOME to Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The harbour is a great place to get close to nature. Each month Ed Rowsell, Conservation Officer for Chichester Harbour Conservancy, gives a brief update on what you should be looking for as you explore the harbour by land or boat.BirdsMigrating waders such as Black-tailed Godwit, Greenshank, Redshank and small numbers of Spotted Redshank are now present in the harbour. Some of these will over-winter in the harbour, but many more will continue further south. The first of the Brent Geese will arrive towards the end of the month.MammalsThis is a month when many mammals are at their most visible. Young fox and badger cubs, will be fending for themselves. Roe kids remain at their mothers side, sometimes right through to the following Spring.

InvertebratesIt has continued to be a fairly bad year for butterflies. Speckled wood, Peacock and Red Admiral are still about sporadically but not in any numbers. Dragonfly numbers seem to be picking up though, with Common Darter, Emperor and Common Blue Damselfly seen in the last few days.Reptiles and amphibiansBaby grass snakes and slow worms have been spotted on a few sites. Grass snakes hatch from eggs whereas slow worms are live-born direct from their mother with stripy camouflage to blend in with dead grass.PlantsLots of the later flowering species are still in full bloom, including Black Knapweed and Fleabane. Other species have finished flowering and are setting seed. Fruit is starting to develop on a number of trees and shrubs, but first impressions are that it won’t be a bumper year for blackberries.SightingsPlease report any interesting sightings of breeding birds, orchids and Water Voles to the Harbour Office 01243 512301.

Charlotte hoping to help othersA WESTBOURNE entrepreneur is hoping to help other West Sussex business women to beat the recession.

Businesswoman Charlotte Briggs is use to meeting new challenges. As a yacht chef in the Mediterranean she helped keep passengers calm during a hurricane by putting the kettle on! On another occasion, she paddled her way through service after half the marquee had blown away…

Now Charlotte’s taken on a role which, given the economic downturn, will also keep her on her toes. Alongside her work as Director of Frog Hollow Catering in Westbourne, she’ll be leading the newest branch of a pioneering business group for women - the Sussex-based Mumpreneurs Networking Club. The new group is the Emsworth and Havant branch and entrepreneurs from all over West Sussex are welcome to the launch on Tuesday 18th September.

The Mumpreneurs Networking Club helps women to build their businesses by getting support, advice and client leads from other mothers. Unlike other networks, its core meetings are held in term time during school hours – vital for businesswomen who are juggling family commitments with self-employment.

Charlotte is sure local entrepreneurs will

benefit from the new branch: ‘Our style of networking is effortless and so effective. It’s amazing how much business you can do over a relaxed cup of coffee – which is why the Mumpreneur’s website is called ‘agoodgossip.co.uk’. Little chats can lead to lasting business relationships! If you’d like to try it out for yourself, the first meeting for newcomers is always free. I’d love to see you at our launch on Tuesday 18th September at 10 am at The Brookfield Hotel in Emsworth.’

The core members are mothers, but MNC welcomes anyone who enjoys networking

in an informal and dynamic environment. Members pay an annual fee and can attend any of the club’s branches at no extra cost. Charlotte’s branch, Emsworth and Havant is the latest addition to a list that includes Chichester, Littlehampton/Arundel, Midhurst/Haslemere, Worthing and Brighton.

If you would like more information about any of MNC’s groups, please visit its website: www.agoodgossip.co.uk/or contact Nicky Chisholm or Sara Guiel at [email protected] or on 01273 681 484.

The Hampshire theme park is usually associated with the hugely popular Peppa Pig brand but one weekend this September, there were just as many blue noses in the park as there were pink snouts.

Tatty Teddy, the famous grey bear behind the Me to You brand, along with his Blue Nose Friends was on hand on the sunny weekend of 8th & 9thSeptember to meet young fans at a wonderful new stage show with original music and lyrics created by the talented team at the Carte Blanche Group based in Tangmere.

Over 5000 young fans sang along with Tatty Teddy and My Blue Nose Friends and heard all about how Tatty Teddy got his blue nose and trademark grey fur with patches.

Families were also able to meet Tatty Teddy and My Blue Nose Friends and pose for special pictures as a memento of the day. An exciting treasure hunt also saw children running all over the park in an effort to find My Blue Nose Friends characters and win some amazing prizes from the brand new Tatty Teddy and My Blue Nose Friends toy range, which is tipped to be a firm favourite this Christmas!

Petworth keeps 2012 ‘buzz’ alive and celebrates food and wine!Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 September JUST WHEN we thought that all the fizz and sparkle had gone out of our lives with the end of the London Olympics and the Paralympics, Petworth in West Sussex has come up with a fun-packed ‘medal-winner’ in the form of a Food and Wine Festival planned for Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd September.

With Lombard Street and the Market Square closed to traffic for the event, visitors will be able to wander among the wide range of food-related events and demonstrations, taking in the continental-style street market and street entertainment at the same time!

Announcing the forthcoming Festival plans, Jackie Tudor, Chairman of the Petworth Business Association said: “Petworth has something for everyone and our very first Food and Wine Festival will be a particularly wonderful time to visit. Apart from our Festival culinary delights, visitors will find that Petworth is steeped in history – it has also been voted Best Antiques Town and has links to the famous artist JW Turner who was a frequent visitor to Petworth House.”

In addition to enjoying some fine local and regional fare, there will be continental food and food preparation by visitors from Petworth’s twin towns in Italy and France – San Quirico D’Orcia and Ranville. Think pasta and delicious crepes! Also, to add

that truly ‘global edge’, Indian cooking demonstrations by Meghdoot’s will be held in the Market Square. Demonstrations too by Richard Hayler of Petworth Butchers, Roz Denny, Cookery and Food Writer and Celebrity Chef associate, and also Rosemary Moon, Food Writer, Local Food Activist, West Dean Course Consultant and one of the faces of ITV1’s ‘My Tasty Travels’. For the more traditional, there will be a special Festival High Tea served at TiffinsTea Shop in the High Street, a barbecue lunch at The Star on Saturday and a spit roast at the Angel Inn on the Sunday – book now to avoid disappointment!

A wide range of wines will also be available from local specialists Upperton Winery and Hennings Wine Merchants – and Petworth honey is a ‘must try'! And for wonderfully fresh bread, where better than the Hungry Guest Delicatessen in the High Street or the Bay tree Bakery in Golden Square.

For delicious quiches and other home-cooked goodies, do visit Cates Delicatessen and Cook shop, just off Golden Square. A Petworth ‘culinary delight’ for almost 25 years, Cates also stocks great utensils and kitchen ‘gadgets’, as well as a wide range of select foods.

At the same time, the usual broad range of shops selling everything from fine Antiques to Zabaglione ingredients will make your

Petworth visit even more memorable!

The festival is intended to be very much a family event with ‘something for everyone’ – expect face-painting and an art competition for example. Also planned is a Food and Wine Festival Family Trail – including a ‘Spot the Cupcake’ competition for children. On the way, competitors can drop in to the Coco Café and Sugar Lounge for a real ice-cream ‘refresher’ served from their vintage ice-cream van – ask to try their special Petworth Cupcake Sundae! On both Saturday and Sunday, Coco Café will also feature chocolate tasting presented by a local chocolatier.

Still hooked on competition and the search for prizes? Well, the hunt is on for the perfect ‘Petworth Cake’ – one in which taste, ingredients and character most personify Petworth and its surroundings. This will take the form of a competition open to residents in and around the Petworth parishes, with judging on the Sunday of the Festival. More information on the cake competition can be obtained from [email protected], or simply pick up an entry form from Coco Café or the

Petworth Co-operative store. The National Trust will add to the fun

by hosting cookery demonstrations in the historic kitchens of Petworth House, a chance to savour the culinary sights and smells of ‘times past’.

The Petworth Food and Wine Festival plans are the result of combined efforts by Petworth Business Association, Petworth Town Council, Petworth Twinning Association and the National Trust at Petworth House. As well as providing a joyous ‘end of summer’ event for Petworth residents and families, it is also hoped to raise visitor numbers and attract new business for Petworth traders.

Anna Karenina (12A)FIVE out of Five stars

frequently moves around the characters and stagehands are often glimpsed working feverishly on pulleys and so on. The result is refreshing, exciting and unlike anything you’ve seen before, with key sequences from the novel, such as the racecourse scene, achieving an extra power thanks to their thrilling reinterpretation for the stage. Knightley is superb, delivering a passionate performance that isn’t afraid to reveal

The GoodIn other hands, Anna Karenina could have been just another handsomely designed costume drama, but Joe Wright’s breathtakingly imaginative direction elevates the production into something quite extraordinary. The conceit is that all the action (except, pointedly, for some of Levin’s scenes) takes place upon a sort of dreamlike stage (serving as a metaphor for 1870s Russian society), so that the scenery

With sumptuous production design and breathtakingly imaginative direction, this is a thoroughly engaging, powerfully emotional period drama with a superb script and a terrific central performance from Keira Knightley.

What’s it all about?Directed by Joe Wright and adapted by Tom Stoppard, Anna Karenina is based on the novel by Leo Tolstoy and stars Keira Knightley as Anna Karenina, a Russian aristocrat married to stodgy government official Karenin (Jude Law), who begins a passionate affair with the dashing Count Vronsky (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), only to have her social standing come crashing down around her ears. At the same time, Anna’s hedonistic brother Oblonsky (Matthew Macfadyen, providing welcome comic relief) encourages his friend Levin (Domhnall Gleeson) to woo the beautiful Princess Kitty (Alicia Vikander), who is also in love with Vronsky.

Running time: 130 minsDirector: Joe WrightStarring: Keira Knightley, Jude Law, Aaron Johnson, Kelly Macdonald

Anna’s unsympathetic side; this is, after all, a portrait of obsessive and ultimately destructive love. Wright also coaxes a trio of unexpectedly terrific performances from Law, Taylor-Johnson and Macfadyen, while Gleeson and Vikander provide the genuinely romantic heart of the story as Levin and Kitty; their delightful letter-block-based proposal scene is the sweetest love scene you’ll see all year.

The GreatStoppard’s engaging script is excellent, encompassing a vast array of supporting characters and giving each of them a moment to shine; notably, it’s also the first adaptation to give equal weight to the Levin/Kitty romance and the rewards are keenly felt. On top of that, the mouth-watering production design is impeccable throughout, there’s a terrific score by Dario Marianelli and the film is beautifully shot, courtesy of Seamus McGarvey’s sumptuous cinematography.

Worth seeing?Strikingly imaginative and beautifully directed, this is a hugely enjoyable drama with a superb script and a terrific central performance from Keira Knightley. Unmissable.

New rock band workshops look for young future starsA NUMBER of new rock workshops being held across the county are looking to get more children into music for the start of the school year.

The courses are being run by the West Sussex Music Service to give young budding musicians training from the organisation’s expert tutors.

The ten-week sessions, starting in late September, see under-18 vocalists, drummers, guitarists and keyboard players learn by forming their own rock bands.

It is not the first time courses have been held in West Sussex – last month nearly 40 youngsters aged from eight to 18 took part in week-long workshops in Worthing.

Music Service area manager Colin Arenstein said: “It was wonderful watching these young players sharpen their musical skills in their own rock band in such a short time.

“We are still looking for more people to get involved with our rock courses in Bognor and Worthing happening throughout the new school term.

“The deadline doesn’t close until September 17 so there is still time to sign-up.”

The number of children and adults learning with the Music Service has steadily grown during the last three years – it now tutors more than 15,000 people every

week in choirs, orchestras as well as rock workshops.

They will also be showcasing some of their best talents this November at their yearly music concert in Worthing.

Peter Griffiths, County Council Cabinet Member for Education and Schools, said the rock courses have been very popular with young people in West Sussex for many years.

He added: “Our gifted musicians get to learn from professional coaches and a great chance to meet new and likeminded people.

"The Music Service shares the County Council’s vision of giving every child high quality music opportunities to learn both in and out of our schools.”

The deadline for the rock workshops – which cost just £52 for ten sessions - closes on September 17.

To find out more, including how to download an application form, contact the West Sussex Music Service on 01243 642 361 or email [email protected]

Food & DrinkAcademies selling banned junk foodONE THIRD of academy schools are selling previously banned junk food, a Dispatches investigation has revealed.

The Channel 4 documentary has claimed that a huge number of the secondary schools is selling chocolate and sweets and even fizzy drinks such as Red Bull.

But while junk food is banned in maintained schools under rules designed to protect children’s health, once a school takes on academy status - and is therefore state-funded but independently run – it can opt out of national standards for school food.

Through a series of Freedom of Information requests 29 of the 108 academies that responded admitting to selling chocolate and other confectionery. Nine confessed to selling fizzy drinks and seven sold energy drinks such as Red Bull.

Out of the 108, some 37 were selling “at least” one food or drink product that was banned before they became academies.

A separate Freedom of Information request also found that less than a quarter of children at those secondary schools that responded were having school dinners – while 14 schools had stopped providing a hot meal at all.

And there were huge variations in spending on school meals, with East Lothian council forking out £3.30 per meal on ingredients, compared to Pembrokeshire’s 53p.

It follows Jamie Oliver’s high profile campaign to improve school meals and his claim earlier this year that the government's approach threatened a "massive erosion of everything we have achieved".

Pembrokeshire county council insisted it provided "fresh, high-quality school meals", and had kept costs down by awarding the contract to a local supplier. It said a typical meal might be roast chicken with herb stuffing, potatoes, carrots and broccoli.

Meanwhile a Department for Education

spokeswoman denounced the Dispatches investigation as "shoddy and misleading", adding: "Many academies are already using their freedom from council control to improve food."

Around half of the UK’s children now attend Academy schools, which are free from local control. Education secretary Michael Gove exempted them from nutritional standards introduced by the Labour government.

Great British Bake Off cooks up a sales stormTV hit The Great British Bake Off has created an enormous boom in bakery and high tea-ware, new sales figures reveal.

Traditional style cake stands, food mixers, baking trays, measuring jugs, scales and even oven mitts, are selling like hot cakes, says high street store Debenhams.

The dramatic rise has coincided with the broadcast of the BBC series, which now commands one of the biggest audiences on television.

Said Debenhams head of Home Buying Alice Duggan: “Thanks to Mary Berry, Britain is becoming a nation of bakers once again.”

“Her reassuring yet authoritative tone of voice makes all food lovers want to do ‘the decent thing’ by baking beautiful, hand-crafted dishes at home rather than buying them in a supermarket.”

And for the very first time, the baking boom is being taken up equally by men as well as women. Experts are calling this ‘the Hollywood effect’ after Berry’s co-judge, Paul Hollywood.

According to catering industry analysts bookings for afternoon tea have overtaken lunch reservations in many hotels. Bookings for traditional high tea are 25% up since last year.

Sainsbury’s sees sales of lesser known fish soar as the UK continues to Switch the FishA NEW REPORT predicts over half of all fish sold in the UK will be outside of the ‘Big 5’ by 2030 and sales of lesser known fish species such as Pollack, Seabass, Coley and Tilapia are up by as much as 117% year on year.

Sainsbury's has launched a major new study into fish consumption and attitudes in the UK which shows a marked shift in consumer buying habits as more and more people purchase lesser known, alternative fish which are more abundant in our oceans.

Following a year of high profile awareness campaigns of sustainable fish, including Sainsbury's own Switch the Fish initiative, a shift in fish buying habits has resulted in sales increasing across species including:Seabass +57%Fresh Pollack +15%Trout +29%Tilapia +117%

The Our future with fish report, commissioned by Sainsbury's and producedby the Future Foundation, predicts that this trend is set to continue as consumers make more informed and sustainable choices around the fish they eat. By 2030 over half (52%) of all fish products sold will be outside of the UK's most popular Big 5 species (cod, haddock, tuna, salmon and prawns).

The report also reveals that the population will be eating more fish, with UK adults set to eat twelve extra fish meals a year by 2030 increasing their weekly consumption by 17% (from under 8 million kilograms today

to 9.23 million kilograms by 2030). The so-called tradition Fish Friday is set to continue as meals have increased by 4.4% since 2008 and are predicted to rise from one-in-five today (21%) to one-in-four (25%) in the next ten years.

The Our future with fish report found that one of the primary drivers for increasing UK fish consumption is personal well-being, with 51% of people stating that health concerns have encouraged them to eat more fish over the last year. However the report also identified some of the key barriers to current fish consumption levels in the UK, these include a lack of recipe knowledge (35%), lack of availability of fresh fish in local shops (28%) and lack of time to prepare fish from scratch (28%).

Ally Dingwall, Sainsbury's Aquaculture and Fisheries manager said: "It is great to see more people broadening their minds and appetites by buying and cooking currently less familiar seafood. Doing so will help ensure we have sustainable supplies of this healthy, low-fat protein to eat in the future.

"We want to encourage more consumers to vary the fish and seafood in their diet which is why we commissioned the Our future with fish report to build on our existing knowledge, to better understand why our customers have the current preferences they do and to look ahead at the future of fish being eaten in the UK.”

UK’s hottest commercially grown chilli pepper goes on saleA BEDFORDSHIRE farmer is helping fuel Britain’s growing appetite for hot, spicy food by producing an incredible half a million mouth-scorching chilli peppers each week!

This week Salvatore Genovese will unleash his most potent variety yet – the Bedfordshire Super Naga – which will be the hottest commercially grown chilli pepper sold on UK high streets when it is launched exclusively by Tesco.

And that should be great news to the army of fans across the UK who buy 45 million hot chilli peppers a year and who look forward to increasingly hot varieties arriving on the market.

Last year Salvatore launched the notorious Bhut Jolokia in the UK - a chilli pepper that is listed by the Guinness Book of Records as being 400 times hotter than Tabasco sauce.

The heat of a chilli pepper is measured in Scoville Units and the Bhut Jolokia has a reading of just over one million Scovilles. The Bedfordshire Super Naga is even hotter with a reading of an incredible 1.12 million Scovilles.

Tesco chilli buyer Gethyn Formby said: “Chilli fans will love the Bedfordshire Super Naga as it has a wonderful fruity flavour to match its searing heat level.

“The heat builds slowly allowing you to savour the full flavour. It’s very deceptive because it takes a good 30 seconds for the heat to really start working and then it continues to build for a few minutes. It’s definitely not for the faint-hearted and should

be tasted with extreme caution.”Salvatore’s chilli passion is a far cry from

when his father started the family vegetable growing business back in 1972.

They grew mainly cucumbers and had a thriving business but 15 years ago Salvatore decided to branch out into chilli production and found that demand increased very quickly across the UK.

Salvatore, 40, added: “Until then, generally all the chillis sold in the UK were imported, mainly from Kenya or the Caribbean.

“There was probably a reluctance from UK growers to risk branching out into what was an extremely niche market but demand has really grown in the last five years and I now produce up to half a million hot chilli peppers a week during the five month season.

“In the last two years we’ve doubled production of our hottest chilli peppers and I’ve calculated that one of my chilli peppers reaches one in 200 people in the UK each week.”

While chilli pepper culture is rapidly becoming more popular throughout the UK it’s the fiercest ones such as Bhut Jolokia, scotch bonnet, habanero and bird’s eye that are growing the fastest.

Gethyn Formby said: “Chilli pepper culture in the UK has really come on in the last few years and chillis are no longer thought of as a culinary novelty.”

The Bedfordshire Super Naga costs 90p for a 15 gram packet. The packaging gives the hottest six chilli rating.

SEPTEMBER marks the peak of seasonal British food, and as most of you know if you can find it locally, possibly organically and in season you are on to a good thing! This is the end of the summer, (Boo-Hoo!) the harvest is over and farmers have now cleared their fields, and started ploughing and planting new crops. While summer fruit and vegetables are still in their prime, they’re also joined by the autumn variety, and much of it is wild. Things such as blackberries can be freely picked from hedgerows, mushrooms from woodland areas (but only if you know your fungi), and of course the British plum and Elderberries are also here.BLACKBERRIES (WILD) Blackberries are one of the few items of seasonal produce that are more commonly grown wild than cultivated. They are commonly found in hedgerows or the fringes of woodland, making them easy to pick. Blackberries are not consistent in their flavour, due to the wild variety of places in which they can grow, and they vary throughout the season. They are fairly sweet, to make them appealing to children but also to adults and are very low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium. They contain vitamin E, folate, manganese, potassium and copper. They are a fab source of dietary fibre, vitamin

K, Vitamin C and manganese.ELDERBERRIESNot often seen in the supermarkets, or even the greengrocers, elderberries can be seen everywhere in September. They grow wild in abundance, with large bunches of small black berries covering the bushes. They aren’t often found in shops because they are highly perishable - easily crushed, heavy and bulky in quantity and quick to spoil, they’re not easy for a supply chain to manage with, so if you want to try them, you’re going to have to find them. Chances are, you may have some in your garden courtesy of the many seeds birds scatter every summer in their droppings. The bushes are quick to grow and if left to their own devices, they will grow large enough to fruit in a couple of years. Failing this, go to any woodland area to find elderberries that are so easy to pick. Only

Seasonal Foods are always best!bunches of berries hanging down should be picked as those pointing upwards are not yet ready and remember Elderberries shouldn’t be eaten as you pick them - they contain a mildly toxic alkaloid (chemical) that makes them unpleasant when raw. They contain Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Iron, potassium, dietary fiber and vitamin C so are a definite must have for the autumn nutrition!PLUMS Ripe plums, sweet and juicy, are one of the highlights of the late summer, following on from the berry season. Considering they have such a short ripening season, plums grow very well in our climate. The British season runs from July to October, although they are available all year round in supermarkets, but as always these should be avoided. They are usually grown for size and cosmetic appearance, and usually picked early to transport, so never taste as good as they should.

The British plum is largely considered to be one of the finest cultivated fruits in Britain, however, due to increasing commercialisation of fruit, many of the varieties are no longer available. As if that wasn’t enough, climate change is causing further damage still, due to warmer spring weather, the trees are flowering earlier, and

are susceptible to later frosts which can destroy the buds and therefore the harvest. They contain high amounts of Vitamin A, K and C. Natures most needed vitamins for the time of year. Enjoy!

Concern over family finance leads to stress-induced illnessFINANCIAL HARDSHIP is now the biggest cause for worry in our day to day lives, a survey has found. As a result, 'secondary stress', drawn from worries over family finances and a partner's job security, is so severe that scores of women have been struck down by stress-induced illnesses in the last few years.

'Secondary Stress' is most prevalent in middle class wives and partners of men who earned six figure salaries, who now feel a sense of helplessness and are unable to cope with the sudden change in their situation. As a result, over 50% of respondents said that their families finances are the biggest worry in their life at the moment.

It's no surprise then that a staggering 30% of the study have suffered illness or injury from worrying about their partner's job, as seven in ten Brits say their family wouldn't be able to cope should the financial breadwinner suffer redundancy.

The rise in the number of cases has been witnessed by the British Osteopathic Association, as a direct result of the double-dip recession and increasing fears over a partner's job security (a constant concern for one in four of those polled).

Kelston Chorley, head of professional development at the BOA, said the condition is a consequence of modern life amid the economic downturn.

She added: ''Secondary stress' occurs when a person's worry about their partner's job security

and the threat of financial ruin causes physical and mental injury in themselves.

''The condition has risen significantly in the wake of the double dip recession and is particularly prevalent in the middle class wives of recently redundant high flyers.

''Typically, the change of status, worries over childcare and finances are leading these women to suffer high levels of anxiety which in turn often transmits into physical pain, higher risks of injury and chronic muscular tension.

''These conditions are not in themselves serious but add significantly to stress levels and one’s ability to cope with everyday activities.”

The emergence of the condition comes on the back of a study of 2,000 Brits in long-term relationships by the BOA, which confirmed that worry surrounding the threat of redundancy to a partner is contributing to secondary stress-related health consequences.

Four in ten Brits are currently worried about the threat of redundancy on their family and acknowledge the impact it's had on their physical health.

A third of the study has endured symptoms or ailments which they know arose out of stress, while a wary three in ten have already suffered at the hands of redundancy in the past - either to a friend or partner.

The worry around job security has caused regular headaches and fatigue in many, while a third suffer from neck pain and one in four endures back pain brought about by stress.

Assisted suicide laws criticisedHEALTH MINISTERS have joined calls for a fresh look at relaxing the law against assisted suicide, with one calling it "ridiculous and appalling" that terminally-ill people were forced abroad to take their own lives.

Tory MP Anna Soubry reopened the fraught right-to-die debate in an outspoken interview with The Times just days after being appointed a junior minister in the Department of Health (DoH) in David Cameron's reshuffle.

And her Liberal Democrat colleague Norman Lamb, who was shifted to the health brief at the same time, said he believed there was "a strong case" for the present law to be reconsidered.

Their interventions sparked strong responses on both sides of the argument, with opponents including the president of the British Medical Association, warning any change in the law could put vulnerable people at risk.

But ministers also faced a call to go further still from the widow of locked-in syndrome sufferer Tony Nicklinson who died a week after he lost his legal bid to end his life with a doctor's help. Ms Soubry indicated that she would be opposed to any change that resulted in doctors being told they could kill someone.

Jane Nicklinson, whose lawyers say she has a "compelling" case to be allowed to continue her husband's legal fight, welcomed Ms Soubry's willingness to "stick her neck out" but said rights should not be

restricted to the dying.Ms Soubry said there needed to be more

"honesty" about the consequences. She said: "I think it's ridiculous and appalling that people have to go abroad to end their life instead of being able to end their life at home. The rules that we have about who we don't prosecute allow things to happen but there's a good argument that we should be a bit more honest about it."

The DoH insisted the Government had no plans at present to legislate on the issue, which was a matter of individual conscience for MPs and could only be decided by parliament.

Since new guidelines for prosecutors in assisted suicide cases were brought in in February 2010, anyone acting with compassion to help end the life of someone who has decided they cannot go on is unlikely to face criminal charges.

But assisted suicide remains a criminal offence in England and Wales, punishable by up to 14 years in prison, and individual decisions on prosecution are made on the circumstances in each case.

George "Muffin stop" jeans will banish unsightly love handles!

NICKNAMED “The Muffin Stop” Georges new Great Bum and Tum jeans use clever built-in panelling to help lift the bottom, flatten the tummy area and cover the hip area to enhance your shape!

Kausar from the womenswear design team said: “We have worked really closely with our tech teams and the jeans have been specially developed with darting in the back area that acts like a bottom bra – lifting up the bottom to give you a really good shape. The pocket bags and the wider waistband have been engineered

to help give a slimming effect – with the clever use of the fabric panel on the inside of the garment.”

“The top waist area has been curved like a corset to contour the body and come up at the sides. This helps to cover the “muffin-top” area or naturally fleshy area on your hips. The jeans really do help to enhance your natural curves!”

The new jeans come in four colours and two different leg shapes and are available now in store and from George.com for just £18.

Competitive mums get sporty for the school gatesFIGURES from high street retailer Debenhams show women are donning their gym kits for the school run just to appear sporty.

Since January the department store has seen a 25% growth in sportswear which is being put down to competitive mums wanting to appear sporty at the school gates without actually hitting the gym afterwards.

Running attire seems to be the most popular with a surge in sales of 47%, sports bras have also seen a 75% lift, although it seems the product is worn by ‘mums on the run’ rather than actual runners.

Ian Wibberly, Debenhams senior sportswear buyer says; “Women are trying to get the sporty look without breaking a sweat, we are putting this down to sportswear becoming more fashion focused and about comfort and style over purpose.”

“Mums now want a gym kit that will see them through spin class, to the school run and coffee with friends. Gone are the days of the dingy trackies that were once deemed acceptable gym attire”.

The trend is also being put down to the Olympics, as women have become fitness conscious after a summer of sport. Although it seems they were mainly watching sport in their sportswear rather than getting active in it.

Sportswear is now much more fashion

focused making it acceptable to wear outside of the gym, the sports luxe trend for this season illustrates this and as does Stella McCartney designing the Team GB Olympic kit; it is now very much a season of sport in style.

Women are following in the footsteps of celebrity sporty mums including Jenni Falconer, Elle MacPherson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Mylene Klass and Geri Halliwell who all sport their gym kits for the school and nursery run.

Ian Wibberly continues; “we are now tailoring our sportswear to fit the lives of busy women on the go and have increased our leisurewear offering by 33% to meet the demand of sporty mums for next season”.

Debenhams has also moved its own brand female sports offer, XPG by Jenni Falconer out of the sports department and onto the womenswear floor to make shopping for busy mums easier. From September Debenhams will also be stocking Elle Sports to further meet customer demand.

Burberry warns on profit as sales slow downLUXURY BRITISH FASHION label Burberry has warned that its full year profits are likely “to be around the lower end of market expectations” after sales growth slowed during the second quarter. Against strong comparatives last year, in the 10 weeks to September 8, retail sales grew just 6 percent. Of this, new space contributed 6 percent while like-for-like store sales were unchanged year-on-year, with a “deceleration in recent weeks”, which it is claiming is down to the economic uncertainty.

Ahead of the key retail trading period in the second half, Burberry said it now expected to adjust profit before tax for the 12 months to March 31, 2013 to be around the lower end of market expectations.

Burberry CEO, Angela Ahrendts, said: "As we stated in July, the external environment is becoming more challenging.

“In this context, second quarter retail sales growth has slowed against historically high comparatives. Given this background, we are tightly managing discretionary costs and taking appropriate actions to protect short term profitability, while continuing to execute on our proven five key strategies.”

In Q1, Burberry total revenue grew 11

percent to 408 million Pounds, since then its sales have slowed considerably, which shows that even the luxury market isn’t immune to the current financial climate.

Commenting on Burberry’s sales slowdown, Jaana Jatyri, CEO of fashion forecasting company, Trendstop.com said: "Burberry's latest results show that even the top-end of the market isn't functioning at full capacity in the current economic climate.

"The global economic crisis is dragging on and the longer it drags on the less confident even wealthier individuals become. Unfortunately, people lacking confidence do not shop at Burberry.

"By no means will Burberry implode, as it has an in-built hedge in its high net worth customer base and a CEO with an acute understanding of the market, but these figures show that even it is not immune to market conditions.

"A percentage of the aspirational buyers that have driven Burberry upwards are starting to run out of steam. In recent years, Burberry has thrived in the emerging markets, where people crave democratic luxury, but even the emerging markets are slowing.

"This is not the beginning of the end for Burberry, just a shot across the bows."

Duchess of Cambridge opts for kimono frock

THE Duchess of Cambridge wowed in a kimono-style dress as she arrived in Singapore for the beginning of her tour around Asia today.

The royal and her husband Britain's Prince William will act as representatives of Queen Elizabeth II on the nine-day tour to celebrate Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee.

Catherine has become known for her ever-elegant style, and the brunette beauty didn't disappoint as she touched down in Singapore. The star reportedly commissioned UK designer Jenny Packham to design the Asian-influenced dress.

space. The common hyacinth, Hyacinthus Orientalis is absolutely stunning with its single stem and starfish like flowers.2. Hold off on planting tulips until later in the year. They like to go into a cold ground. It will simply be too warm for them at the moment.3. Hardy summer bulbs such as lilies, alliums and crocosmia are more than happy to begin their dormant period in the ground. Plant these bulbs about 4-6” in the ground or in pots and water in. Don’t give them another thought until they start coming up but always mark with a label or stake where they are. They can quickly disappear over winter.4. Snowdrops and daffodils need to go in as early as possible as they are the first to pop up and welcome in the new-year. Plant these around 8” in the ground and let them do their thing for a few months. They really are the joy of late winter and give a sense of new hope when all else seems a bit bleak and grey.

Get planting for springI CERTAINLY haven’t written this year off just yet. It’s been full of ups and downs with many plants getting confused by the early heat, set against the mid summer chill and rain. However, there’s no time like the present to start thinking about how to make improvements or changes in your displays for next year. And it’s a lot more fun to do while it’s still warm than to wait until the air cools off.

1. Hyacinths can be planted in pots or straight into the ground now. They come in an array of colours with a smell that fills the garden. Look for varieties with single, double or multifloral heads to liven up your garden

It’s time to take the first steps to planning your garden for next year. Jo Golesworthy shows you how some simple bulb planting can lift the senses come next April

Jaguar Enthusiasts embark on American adventureJAGUAR ENTHUSIASTS’ CLUB members cars prepare to embark on an American adventure on the Club’s seventh overseas tour.

The 21 day tour of Eastern USA and Canada and will cover 2000 miles which Club members will drive in their own Jaguars. The motorcade, which has a combined value of £1.5m, comprises 43 vehicles and 85 people. The privately owned Jaguars arrived at Southampton Docks on the 5th and 6th of September when the cars were loaded ready for the journey across the pond to the USA.

The tour commences on 26th September from Washington DC and takes in Niagara Falls, Montreal and New York City along the way.

One of the organisers, Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club General Manager Graham Searle, explained that the expedition is the seventh overseas tour since 2000. “The overseas tours are complicated to co-ordinate but extremely rewarding to complete. We rely on the commitment from our members, the expertise of tour operators and travelling mechanics as well as the support of sponsors, such as Footman James our specialist insurance broker which has provided insurance cover for the tour.

“Indeed there are many un-sung heroes who play an integral part in the organisation of these events. One such example is the management of the vehicles’ embarkation at the docks, a lengthy four-day process that was managed by Simon and Ann Cronin. We are indebted to those who provide their assistance and support, without it the tours would simply not take place!”

Andy Fairchild, Footman James’ managing director commented. “We are delighted to support the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club, one of our key partners, by providing insurance cover for the 43 vehicles taking part in the tour.

“The vehicles range in age, model and value and include, amongst others, a 1950 XK120 Roadster, 1964 E-Type S1 FHC and the latest Jaguar supercar the XKR-S convertible.

“We wish the tour party good luck and fingers crossed members do not have to rely too heavily on their mechanical experts!”

Tour participants and Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club members Keith Walker and Gill Ball are taking their 1968 E-type Series 1 ½ which was originally shipped to the USA but brought back to the UK in 1989 and is now fully restored.

Keith and Jill have owned the vehicle for 12 years and clocked up 50,000 miles

primarily touring the UK and Europe. This is their first JEC tour. As Footman James customers throughout they have realised the benefit of a trusted insurance partner as they had previously required an emergency recovery home from Normandy. They travelled home to Stoke on Trent in a hire car supplied by Footman James and had their vehicle safely repatriated too.

Keith said, “It is fantastic that so many Jaguar owners can get together and take part in what is the fourth USA tour organised by the Club and the first one that Gill and I have taken part in. As Club members we are all like-minded enthusiasts with a shared passion and are looking forward to 2000 miles of open road against a backdrop of breathtaking scenery.”

In Australia rugby teams regularly start fixtures at 10 in the morning, with the youngest teams first, gradually building to the first XV at around 3pm so all ages can come together to support their top team. It could be something to consider for some smaller clubs in the future and as fans wait for four weeks until the next 3pm kick off at the Amex. Follow Albion home and away on BBC Sussex Sport

Straight from the commentary box

Friday night’s alright for... footballYOU know the drill. You know the routine. Saturday, 3 o’clock, that means… football. Well not any more.

As Albion prepare for a Friday night game against Sheffield Wednesday fans are faced with all sorts of different kick off times and match days. Don’t get me wrong I love a night-time game, and the Amex serves up a tremendous atmosphere under the lights.

Games are moved for all sorts of reasons such as the demands of the all-powerful TV companies, European games, police advice and travel considerations. In fact, Albion fans have very few home games at the Amex at 3pm prior to Christmas but this throws up a dilemma: What do you then do on a Saturday afternoon?

Shopping? Ouch. DIY? Not for me. (I’m useless at it anyway). Convert your CD’s to your IPod? Yawn. Some might go for an afternoon in front of the box watching Jeff Stelling calling the shots on Soccer Saturday. Another option is to head out to another game in the region and watch

another local team.Sussex has Crawley Town, Eastbourne

Borough and four teams in the Ryman Premier. Bognor Regis Town, Hastings United, Lewes and Whitehawk and a host of other friendly non-league teams happy to see new faces in the clubhouse spending their cash. Much as the idea of heading to old Trafford might appeal, there is also nothing quite like hanging over metal railing with a pint in your hand as players collide just a yard or so away.

There is also a benefit for all those devotees to amateur football who turn out for a team every Saturday. They can go to

Friday and Sunday games as well as mid-week fixtures.

Lewes FC in the past has trialled a few games with deals for those going to the Albion later in the day. It can be of benefit to both large and small clubs.

if Liverpool win but after the defeat on saturday the faithful will be hoping confidence isn’t dented especially with Ipswich, West Ham and Birmingham all on the horizon.

It has to be said though, every time Gus Poyet and his team have been tested since he took over, he seems to apply the midas touch and they pass with flying colours. It may be the most high profile week of his fledgling managerial career, and, like Albion fans, he will be hoping that after the 7 days and 3 games, it’s safe passage to the last 16 and 6 points in the bag.

OFTEN teams face a big week that determines the fate of their season. And often it comes in January.

However, by a quirk of the fixtures computer and TV scheduling the Albion face 3 massive games in a week, each for different reasons.

Liverpool wednesday : The game against Liverpool in the Carling Cup has the drama and the history. The Reds have Steven

Gerard back for the first time since march, straight of the back of a spanking from Spurs. Vicente may well get his first outing against a club he beat when with Valencia. Noone the roofer is a story well documented aswell. Gus

Leeds friday : 3 points on offer. 3 points on offer. 3 points on offer.

Palace tuesday : 3 points yes but also a fierce, if sometimes misunderstood rivalry. The first clash between the two sides at the Amex. Glenn Murray returns to his former club.

Whenever you look at games in isolation they have a certain significance but when you look at the 7 days and 3 games together this period could become a pivotal point in the season.

City face local rivals Pagham in Vase

CITY joint-boss Alex Twitchen believes his side will give Pagham a run for their money in their local derby Vase tie at Nyetimber Lane this Saturday.

City picked up a useful 2-2 draw against mid-table Hassocks last Saturday to keep them hovering away from the relegation zone.

“I thought we dominated the game and were the more likely of the two sides to go on and score the winning goal,” said Twitchen. “From that point of view it was pretty disappointing not to come away with all three points.

“But overall it was a good psychological boost ahead of the game with Pagham,” he added. “The Chichester team is much improved and the outcome of the league game earlier in the season (which Pagham won 2-0) won’t have any bearing on what happens. We’ll be the underdogs, but we’ll

be competitive.” Chichester made a terrible start against

Hassocks. From the very first set-piece of the game, a defensive error allowed Robins’ Louis Pople to score with a weak headed goal.

But the City players showed great spirit and soon worked their way back into contention. After the break they started to boss the game with goals from Ken Hagan and Jack Blatchford putting them ahead.

However, almost immediately Hassocks hit back and levelled when Phil Johnson’s effort came off an opponent for an own goal.

City captain Perry Northeast, who missed the game with a groin injury, said: “After a poor start, the lads were unlucky not to take all three points and played some great football in the second half.”

Northeast is rated 50/50 to recover in time for Saturday’s clash.

Perry Northeast is hoping to be fit
