Local NewsMedFest just gets bigger and better!WEST DEAN’S MedFest once again highlighted the cuisine, culture and vibrant spirit of the Mediterranean with live music and dance, food demos and tastings, gardening tips and specialist Mediterranean stallholders.

Opera singers and world music rubbed shoulders at this year's MedFest! Musicians from France, Italy, and Spain, combined with Italian opera, and Lebanese belly-dancers gave this year's Medfest a distinctly international and cultural flavour. Cafe music from France was provided by Fleur de Nice, and last year's resounding success - the Italian guitarists Buono Notta - were performing on the Saturday interspersed by bouts of participatory Lebanese dancing. On Sunday the dancers were also in evidence as well as Spanish flamenco guitar maestro Eduardo Niebla, and the wandering dulcet tones of Oyster Opera. Live dance performances followed by workshops gave party goers the opportunity to be inspired and have a go at shimmying and sashaying to the exotic dance-beats.

Rosemary Moon created an eclectic mix of authentic Mediterranean dishes with her own recipes in a rolling programme of Food Demos and Tastings. Influenced by the cuisine of the sun, she used produce closer to home, which you can emulate at home. Rosemary dished up

a feast from the Mediterranean, and featured many of the crops that West Dean is famous for, including herbs, tomatoes, chillies and aubergines.

Sarah Wain, responsible for the wealth of fruits and vegetables grown in West Dean Gardens shared her knowledge and passion in a series of sessions offering guidance and advice about the wonderful range of vegetables that can be easily grown in Britain; which can be included in a healthy Mediterranean style diet. Revealing to the home grower how

to emulate the Mediterranean climate with the use of glasshouses and polytunnels, thus enabling you to produce a number of the crops included in the delicious and healthy Mediterranean diet. Displays took place within the walled garden and glasshouses of over 40 different crops, ranging from chickpeas to cucumbers, artichokes to aubergines and grapes to garlic.

Drawing together a representative sample of regional take away foods, gourmet food products, crafts and plants MedFest offered

small and local producers and distributors the opportunity to showcase their wares at this specialist event. Emma Lundie, owner of Palmavera said: “I’m excited to be part of an event exclusively dedicated to the Mediterranean and West Dean Gardens provides a wonderful setting.”

Other stallholders included: Pure Spain, Lebanese Fine Food, the Churros Bros and The Garlic Farm who featured some educational aspects relating to garlic, its history and culture.

Continued from page 1 ...who now present their debut Chichester productions along with a host of other entertainments in an extraordinary theatrical space.

Tim Hoare, Co-Artistic Director on Theatre on the Fly explains how the new theatre came about.

“Back in the 1980’s, in was just the main theatre and a tent theatre, a tent that was given as a temporary venue which popped up every summer. It gave up and coming artists a chance to flourish. Jonathan Church, our artistic director, wanted to bring back that legacy in some way and tasked us with coming up with an idea. Our response was to come up with this new temporary theatre.”

As well as new productions of Blue Remembered Hills, Playhouse Creatures and the world premiere of Fred’s Diner, Theatre on the Fly will house an eclectic season of late night comedy, live music and cabaret, the Youth Theatre’s production of Noah, theatre activities for children, brand new interactive audio experiences and Anniversary readings.

For a next generation theatre, they’ve partnered with the next generation of architects. Assemble is an outstanding team of young designers and builders who have devised a playhouse able to open up to Oaklands Park or enclose us in new worlds.

The bold design celebrates the theatrical fly tower, which beautifully exposes all the ropes, rails and pulleys that lift and lower scenery, and gives the new theatre both its name and a unique capacity for CFT.

Assemble has designed this temporary theatre in a way that has allowed the community to play a crucial role.

Throughout June they invited friends, youth theatre members, graduates and families, and anyone who wants to lend a hand, to take part in the creation of this spectacular structure and celebrate the local participation which has characterised Chichester Festival Theatre since its inception.

Tim added the journey from start to finish has been a rollercoaster with so many people coming out to help with the project.

He said: “Over 50 volunteers from all walks of life have helped out; local support has been touching and so worthwhile. The biggest challenge we’ve had was the weather!

“It will be great to see the theatre up in lights and glowing in the evenings with fantastic drama, music and comedy. We’re only up for two months, so we encourage people to come and explore it.”

HANDSHAKESIt was simultaneously entertaining and poignant watching the Duke of Edinburgh trying to make sure Martin McGuiness didn’t get any chin time with him.

EVERY WEDDING SHOULD HAVE ONELast Saturday, a Chichester band was asked to play at a wedding near Arundel. The organisers knew what they were doing; they’d hired posh portable loos and…wait for it…a first aid tent. These are people who know a good wedding; love, happiness, free bar, and sprained ankles. Brilliant.

TARGETSThe giant Olympic rings hanging from Tower Bridge remind me of a cartoon. Two deer in the woods, one is showing the other a red target on his chest. The other is saying “Bummer of a birthmark Ralph”. I mention this secure in the belief that people of malice are redundant of irony.

HOMEBASEThe man ahead of me in the queue at the till was surprised by his bill. He’d bought 10 things and it came to £10 more than he expected. This is because everything nowadays is something and 99p.

ENGLAND’S PENALITIES

We lost because the Italian Pirlo scored with a floater. Our players felt humiliated they couldn’t do a fancy penalty and fluffed even a straightforward one. This is the secret of the penalty shootout: have someone who can do something so classy it wins the mind games.

HOUSE OF LORDSLooks like it’s going to become an elected chamber. With “Lords” getting a seat for 15 years. They should try the Chinese system, where they appoint people who know stuff about whatever is being debated. If they are planning a debate about trade with Europe, they appoint some Chinese business people who have lived and worked in Europe.

CHINESE HOUSE OF LORDSSo, if a debate is planned in Parliament on petrol tax, they’d ennoble the head of the AA, Jeremy Clarkson, a sales rep, a cyclist.

Think about it. MP’s are mostly professional politicians, lawyers and lecturers, and while they have skills, it’s a narrow base of knowledge compared to the whole world they have to make laws about.

THE WEATHERMiserable, but the grass still needs the same cutting doesn’t it?

TREESFor the sake of argument: I hate trees. Who does their PR? In summer they block out the sun, In Autumn they dump trillions of tons of stinking mulch everywhere, blocking drains and stopping trains. It costs the council a fortune to plant them, conduct “surgery” on them and collect the leaves. The rest of the year they haunt every garden and avenue with their knarled fingers. It’s not as if we need them now for canoes or yurts. Children don’t climb them anymore, or play conkers. Down with trees!

MESSAMS JOKEI am unswayed in my eclectic view that Messams is the best shop in Chichester. I once went in and bought a nut. A single nut. 8 pence. I dedicate today’s joke to them, although you get better service there than this: A man goes into a hardware shop “I’d like some nails” The assistant asks sarcastically “How long?” The man replies “Err… I was hoping to keep them”.

Op Peapod leads to Bognor burglar convictionA 27-YEAR-OLD man from Bognor has been sentenced at Chichester Crown Court to 15 months imprisonment for several burglaries committed across Sussex and Hampshire in the last eight months.

Lukasz Ksiezopolski of Hawthorn Road, Bognor who pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary and one count of attempted burglary was arrested at his home address back in March 2012

Detective Constable Jon Woolley who led the joint operation called Op Peapod with Hampshire Police said: "Ksiezopolski's home was like an Aladdin's cave of stolen property including dozens of items from reported burglaries in Sussex and Hampshire. The job then began of trying to trace where all the recovered electrical goods, jewellery and other items had come from.

"It was decided to use the Sussex Police website to publish the photos of the property on-line and then letters were sent to all burglary victims known to us in Sussex and our colleagues in Hampshire asking them to look at the website and fill in a form if they recognised their stolen property.

"We had many positive replies and managed to reunite several items of stolen property back to its rightful owners. However, there is still a good deal of

unclaimed property that can viewed at http://peapod.sussex-police.co.uk/igallery.asp.

Ksiezopolski was convicted of a burglary in Hawthorn Road, Bognor Regis on 22 February, one in Meyrick Road, Havant, Hampshire on 6 March and an attempted burglary in Worthing Road, Rustington on 13 February.

DC Woolley continued: "We know Ksiezopolski used the train to travel across Hampshire and West Sussex and our enquiries are on-going with regards to further burglaries. If you have any information that could help police with this investigation please call 101 quoting Operation Peapod or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Attempted break-ins in MerstonOCCUPANTS of houses in Merston, Chichester reported being woken up by noises sometime between 2.30am and 3.40am on Sunday 18 June.

When police arrived on the scene in Marsh Lane it was apparent that someone had attempted to gain entry via the windows to these properties whilst the owners were inside asleep.

Detective Constable Della Squires from Chichester CID said: "Fortunately none of the properties were broken into but nonetheless this was a frightening experience for the

occupants to be woken up by strange noises in the middle of the night.

"I would appeal to anyone who witnessed or heard any suspicious activity to please call 101 quoting serial 0230 of 18/6. Alternatively, call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

"Please do not hesitate to dial 999 immediately if you hear or see any suspicious activity in your area and always make sure your windows and doors are secure before you go to bed."

AS PARTS of West Sussex continue to deal with the aftermath of the recent flooding, Andrew Tyrie, MP for Chichester, is offering help and support to any constituents making insurance claims to ensure they are handled as swiftly and efficiently as possible.

The Chichester MP has also praised the emergency services for all their hard work over the last two weeks.

Andrew Tyrie MP, said: “The emergency services, local authorities and the Environment Agency have been working hard to reduce the levels of floodwater and help affected communities with the recovery. I think they have done a remarkable job.

“The most important issue for flood victims will now be their insurance cover. It is essential that insurance companies deal with claims as quickly as possible. Any constituents who are having problems should get in touch with me. I will do what I can to help.

“People in areas at flood risk should follow the advice given by the Environment Agency. They can sign up to the Environment Agency’s free flood warning system by calling 0845 988 1188.”

Any constituents in need of Andrew's assistance should contact his office at the House of Commons on 0207 219 5425.

Chichester MP praises emergency services and offers help to flood victims

Stone-SafeWe would like to inform all our clients that we have been and will continue to install memorials tothe highest standard. Thats why two years ago we set up a company Stone – safe systems ltd.

Improving the image of Lawn Memorial Installation Modern Memorials are supposed to have a stainless steel pin to keep

them upright this offers very little resistance in poor soil conditionsThe flat slab, laid on the ground with the installer forcing a pin or anchorinto an unknown soil condition, unaware it could contain unexpectedvoids. We have designed and developed our own system which has provena safer alternative.

1/ Stone-Safe an in depth, memorial foundation base giving greaterstability than a flat slab on the ground. (Base also being reinforced).

2/ A mechanical fixing between the headstone and the base, and sub-base. The use of having a mechanical fixing has two advantages. The joints are immediately and permanently at maximum strength and boltedfixing allows for the easy removal of the headstone at a later date ifadditional lettering is required.

3/ The ground anchors stand up in all soil conditions. Two miniconcrete piles with inserted 20mm stainless steel rods allowing foundationbase to be bolted down onto the concrete piles, which provides far greaterstability for the memorial and less chance of subsidence giving you peaceof mind; not plagued with problems in the future.

B&Q teams up with Chichester Festival Theatre and award winning architects

B&Q is joining forces with Chichester Festival Theatre and Assemble, an award winning London based team of group of architects to help nurture the next generation of theatre makers.

A new temporary space, Theatre on the Fly, has been built to showcase an exciting season of work at Chichester Festival Theatre as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Designed and built by Assemble, many of the materials for the theatre have been donated by local retailer B&Q. B&Q employees from the local store have given a helping hand with their DIY skills to help create the temporary theatre that will be open throughout the summer period.

Previous projects by Assemble include The Cineroleum, which transformed a

derelict petrol station in Clerkenwell into a hand-built cinema, and Folly for a Flyover which turned a cavernous gap between East and Westbound traffic on the A12 into a waterside arts venue.

Matt Sexton, Corporate Social Responsibility Director at given a helping hand withsaid: “Helping to improve our local communities is at the very heart of B&Q. We’re proud to be able to sponsor such a worthwhile cause that will not only benefit new talent, but provide enjoyment for those that come and see the shows. Our team of local store Customer Advisors have been hard at work today with their expert DIY knowledge to help create the temporary theatre in time for the first show.”

Cold callers prey on vulnerable residentsWARNINGS are being issued to remind residents affected by the severe flooding in West Sussex to stay on their guard against the advances of rogue traders.

It comes after reports of unsolicited traders appearing on the doorsteps of households in the area, offering to carry out repair works on properties in the immediate aftermath of the bad weather and local flooding.

Residents being pressurised in this manner, when they are in such a vulnerable position, are advised by Trading Standards officers to say ‘no’ to these cold-callers.

If work needs to be carried out on your property, always use a reputable business to do it for you.

West Sussex Trading Standards’ Approved Business Directory contains a list of hundreds of businesses, thoroughly vetted by Trading Standards officers, who have signed up to the ‘Buy With Confidence’ scheme.

There are a number of builders, decorators, electricians and home maintenance businesses signed up to the scheme in the local area.

County Council Cabinet Member for Public Protection, Christine Field, said: “Whenever an emergency of this nature

occurs, it seems to bring unscrupulous traders out of the woodwork who prey on the vulnerable.

“If you do need emergency work done to your property, ignore the claims of bogus callers if they turn up at your door.

“Use a Buy With Confidence accredited business that has been checked by our Trading Standards officers.”

Copies of the West Sussex Buy With Confidence Approved Business Directory can be picked up from stockists around the county. For more information or to view an online version, visit our website at www.westsussex.gov.uk/bwc or call 01243 642124.

For civil advice or to report cold calling in your area, call the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 08454 040506 .

West Sussex County Council has also placed skips in the worst affected areas and relaxed its policy regarding skip licences while the clean-up operation is completed.

Moonlight Walk is a magical eveningARMED with torches, snacks and plenty of enthusiasm, more than 600 night owls of all ages took to the streets around Chichester for St Wilfrid’s Hospice’s Moonlight Walk on Friday, June 15.

It was a fantastic success, projected to raise more than £80,000 and despite predictions of heavy rain, the showers thankfully stayed away.

St Wilfrid’s Hospice fundraiser Jill Dennison said: “We were so lucky with the weather, it was touch and go at one point and we had worked out an alternative route, but luckily we didn’t have to bring that into action.”

Walkers included teams as well as individuals ¬and while registering were entertained by the Littlehampton Academy Steel Band.

Many moving messages were placed on large letters spelling out the word memories situated at the back of the main hall. Afterwards they were taken back to St Wilfrid’s and placed in the chapel.

Ace Faces provided face painting, and in keeping with the night time theme, local charity Owls-4-u brought four of their rescue owls which participants could be photographed with.

Before setting off from Westgate Leisure Centre, walkers enjoyed a warm-up session courtesy of Michelle Kyte, Clare McTernan, Natalie Owen and James Gill, while Spirit FM’s Ian Crouch helped build the mood.

Along the way walkers were able to stop at Swanfield Chapel and light a votive candle in memory of loved ones. Bishop’s Palace Gardens were adorned with lights and balloons and walkers arrived to the sounds of the dawn chorus.

Jill said: “The atmosphere of the walk was bubbly and very positive. People were

raring to go and there was a real sense of achievement when they came back. After ten miles they were still coming back buoyant. It was a wonderful event and we hope people will give generously to our walkers.”

Afterwards walkers enjoyed a light breakfast with many also taking advantage of a relaxing massage provided by

the hospice’s team of complementary therapists.

The event was a huge community effort, with around 70 volunteers helping as route marshals. Natures Way Foods, Waitrose and Aqua Pura donated snacks and water while staff at Westgate Leisure Centre donated their venue and time.

A BIG month is upon usGET READY to celebrate a month of history, culture, and sport in the Chichester District this July.

There are lots of exciting events taking place throughout July as part of Chichester District’s Big Month including:• the opening of Chichester District Council’s new museum The Novium;• Natures Way Foods Triathlon and Junior Aquathon;• the Olympic torch relay travelling through the district;• a free open day at Westgate Leisure Chichester;• Love Parks Week; and,• Chichester District Council’s summer of sport.

Cllr Myles Cullen, Cabinet Member for Economy, Property and Tourism at Chichester District Council, says: “This year we are celebrating some key historic moments. This includes the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Olympics, and on a more local basis, the completion of The Novium museum, which is one of the biggest projects the council has ever delivered.”

The Big Month starts with the opening of The Novium on Sunday 8 July. Located on Tower Street in the centre of Chichester, The Novium will tell the story of the Chichester District over the

past 500,000 years. One of the special features of the museum is that it has been purpose built to show the remains of the Roman baths of the city of Noviomagus Reginorum – or Chichester as we now know it. The remains are just one of the many wow factors you will see.

The remains of the baths were found in the 1970s, and lay preserved under a car park until the museum could be built. The remains are now uncovered for visitors to see for the first time and are the main feature on the ground floor.

Also, look out for the curiosities case, the Jupiter Stone, and the Chilgrove Mosaic. Plus, take in the breath-taking views of the cathedral on the second floor, where you can ‘touch the view’ with chimney pots and cathedral stone placed near the window. You can also search for interesting finds; try on a Roman outfit; and even make your own mosaic!

Then, on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 July, keen sportsmen and women - and those who aim to be - have the chance to take part in the Natures Way Foods Chichester Triathlon and Junior Aquathon. The main Triathlon event on the Sunday includes a 600m pool swim at Westgate Leisure Chichester, a 42km (26 mile) cycle ride and a 10km (six mile) run. If you don’t feel like tackling those

distances on your own, you can also enter as part of a team. Alongside the main Triathlon event, there will be the Natures Way Foods Chichester Try a Tri event. This is a sprint triathlon suitable for competitors who prefer a shorter distance triathlon involving a 400m pool swim, 30k bike ride and a 5k run.

The Junior Aquathon is for competitors between eight and 16. It will include a swimming race at Westgate Leisure Chichester, followed by a race around Chichester College’s campus. The distance set for junior competitors will be dependent upon their age.

On Monday 16 July the Olympic Torch will travel through Rogate, Midhurst, Easebourne, Tillington, Petworth, Duncton and Chichester. A map with start times for each location and top tips for the day can be found on the council’s website at www.chichester.gov.uk/london2012. Please note that you will only be able to see the torch and the torchbearers in the seven communities identified. The rest of the time, the torch will be travelling in a vehicle to the next community.

Love Parks Week will be held from Saturday 21 – Sunday 29 July. To celebrate, a plant sale and picnic will be held in Bishop’s Palace Gardens, Chichester, on Wednesday 25 July. To

find out more, contact Chichester District Council’s Parks Team on 01243 534695 or [email protected]

Westgate Leisure Chichester is holding a free open day from 9am-5pm on Sunday 22 July to celebrate their 25th anniversary. You can take part in free swimming, badminton, squash, table tennis, bouncy castle, soft play, taster classes, and more. To find out more, you can contact the centre by calling 01243 785651.

And finally, from 24 July onwards, the council has an exciting summer of sport programme. This includes:• Rugby in the Community courses from 24 July;• Football in the Community courses from 26 July;• Sport and Play Pop Ups from 23 July; and,• lots of activities run by Westgate Leisure, including trampolining, Walterwalkerz, fencing, gymnastics and snorkelling.

There is also a range of other events and activities on the council’s website, including the Chichester Festivities and the celebration of Tangmere Military Aviation Museum. This is also a busy year for Chichester Festival Theatre, as they are celebrating their 50th anniversary.

Around the Island for SophieA FIREFIGHTER for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is to take on a challenge with a difference.

Ben Goodridge, based at Chichester Fire Station, will aim to swim across the Solent to the Isle of Wight before cycling 70miles all way around the Island and then Kayaking back across the Solent to home – all in a day!

The planned date for the challenge is on Thursday 30th August, starting at 10am from Hurst Castle in Keyhaven (near Lymington), hopefully finishing approximately 5pm at Keyhaven yacht club.

So why is Ben doing this you may ask?“In my spare time I also work as a gym

instructor at Westgate leisure Centre in Chichester, and was here I met a young girl called Sophie who has Cerebral Palsy. Whilst helping her with her training at the gym, she explained to me how she also likes to play a game called 'Boccia', which I later found out is a Paralympic game,” said Ben.

“However, in order to do this, she currently has to travel by herself in her wheelchair all the way to Brighton, over 90minutes each way, just to play for an hour. I didn’t think this was right, so decided to try and help out, and after a little thought, and maybe a few too many drinks down the pub came up with a big charity challenge to hopefully help raise the money to kick-start a new Boccia/Multisport disability group at Westgate Leisure Centre in Chichester.

“Luckily I also found a friend, Ali, who was crazy enough to also agree to take part, so we are both now in training. We decided to do this challenge on Thurs 30th August, which is the start of the Paralympics, as we thought it would be good to make the most of this massive sporting occasion and so help raise awareness of disability sport. Unfortunately we found out some quite sad and disturbing facts: 93% of disabled people do not take part in regular sport and numbers are dropping; half of all young disabled people feel they missed out on sport at school because of their impairment; of those who do play, 1 in 5 believe that they are not welcome in their local clubs.

“So for these reasons we also are going to donate some of the money raised to The English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS), who are a small national charity who doesn’t receive any government funding. However they help set up small local clubs and events for disabled people, much like what we are trying to do at Westgate Centre in Chichester.”

To help Ben and Ali reach their sponsorship target of £2000, they have also launched a website and Facebook page:

http://www.iow-olympic-challenge.co.uk/http://www.facebook.com/

pages/Isle-of-Wight-Olympic-Challenge/283170598396783

Here you can find out more information

about the challenge and why they’re doing it.

Ben added: “However, we were also aware that lots of other people constantly do charity events for equally good causes, so to help encourage people to support us we thought we would also like to try and give something back. Therefore we contacted a lot of local businesses and were very grateful by their generosity. So EVERY person who kindly donates ANY amount to our challenge will automatically be given a FREE ticket to into our charity raffle draw.”Prizes include:# SIGNED 2012 HAMPSHIRE CRICKET CLUB SHIRT # SIGNED POSTER BY 2012 BRIGHTON & HOVE FC TEAM # SIGNED FOOTBALL BY 2012 SOUTHAMPTON FC TEAM - 1 months free gym membership at Westgate Leisure Centre- 2 x £25 vouchers at Alexandra Sports- Dine with wine meal for two at Brassiere

Side-hurting, hardcore giggling

WHEN the sun comes out, my school friends and I usually go and sit in a certain circle and soak up the awesomeness that is harmful sun rays. Normally this is the best time ever. It’s a gap which we can fill with our usual inspired wit (obvs) and spend it laughing. And when I say laughing, I mean going-home-with-aching-sides style laughing. This is hardcore giggling that is sparked by jokes that are completely weird and unfunny and kind of manly. It’s the kind of banter that you overhear on trains or buses from a bunch of annoying girls and think to yourself, ‘Oh dear god, they should leave this bus so that their torture doesn’t fill our ears, only their own’. Nobody thinks that we’re funny.

Except us of course. We know that we’re geniuses in disguise. We are sneaky little people who have an amazing ability to find humour in everything. Some of our comments are ‘inside jokes’, which makes everyone around us want to punch our faces. We sit in corners and snigger in our huddles. We are literally the definition of annoying

schoolgirls who think we’re hilarious when everybody else thinks we’re shockingly unfunny and dim.

But, shock horror, sometimes just two of us are in on something together. It’s so unbelievably annoying when it’s somebody else. The general attitude is ‘Is there something you’d like to share with us, or are you being deliberately infuriating?’ When it’s you, though, everything is hilarious. Everyone else around you getting annoyed just adds to the amusement. My friend and I have a particular saying, ‘Everybody hates us,’ that we helpfully impart when we’ve been messing around and the room goes silent with everybody staring at you. That phrase is uttered with giggles and a smug smile that says, We Know You Hate Us And We Love It.

But then again, who am I to criticise our ways? As immature as we are, at least we’re having fun and making the most of our time. It’s really fine to have a laugh when you can, otherwise everything seems so serious and depressing. Unless it’s some other group of course; we can’t have our bus journey ruined now can we?

Westgate Leisure Chichester celebrates 25 years!WESTGATE Leisure Chichester has celebrated its 25th birthday.

As part of its anniversary year, Westgate is holding four charity events and a free open day on 22 July. You can take part in free swimming, badminton, squash, table tennis, bouncy castle, soft play, taster classes, and more.

Richard Minton, Operations Manager at Westgate Leisure Chichester, says: “I’ve worked here for 23 years and have witnessed many changes during that time. When the centre opened in June 1987 it offered eight classes. It now has over 100 a week, varying from Zumba to aqua gym, and spinning to ‘easy does it’ classes.

“What I love about Westgate is the people, the place and the variety. It is a community hub with a wide range of users taking part in everything from swimming classes for children, to sports clubs and classes to help people improve their health following operations.”

Over the past 25 years the centre has welcomed 17.5 million visitors. As part of the anniversary year, Westgate has refurbished its gym, with 78 pieces of new Technogym fitness equipment.

Kevin McCoy, Westgate Leisure Manager, who has worked at the centre since it opened, says: "During the past 25 years the centre has enjoyed welcoming

both regular and new customers to participate in the ever expanding range of activities offered. Being at the heart of the community, the leisure centre is proud to support local schools, clubs and suppliers and offers a range of services to the public. There really is something for everyone to enjoy, be it a relaxing swim or a vigorous workout or even if you are just looking for a social catch up in a warm, friendly environment.

"We would like to thank all our current and past users over the last 25 years and hope you continue to support your local leisure centre."

A cake decorated by staff members to celebrate 25 years.

The Five Year Engagement (12A) THREE out of Five stars

also has good chemistry with Segel, who is his usual likeable, slightly dopey self. There’s also strong comic support from the likes of Ifans, Pratt and Mindy Kaling (as one of Violet’s colleagues), though the film is almost completely stolen by Alison Brie (TV’s Trudy Campbell or Annie Edison, depending on which show you watch), who not only nails a note-perfect English accent but also nabs all the best lines and provides the film’s biggest laughs (in the “Use your Elmo voice” scene).

developing a crush on Violet and b) Violet’s sister Suzie (Alison Brie) marrying and starting a family with Tom’s dopey best friend Alex (Chris Pratt) after they hook up at the engagement party.

The GoodBlunt is utterly adorable as Violet, combining a ready wit, goofy charm and a hint of playful sexuality that makes a refreshing change from run-of-the-mill romcom heroines; she

Watchable comedy with superb comic performances and a steady stream of decent gags, but it’s also a good twenty minutes too long and is occasionally let down by some lazy plotting.

What’s it all about?Directed by Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), The Five Year Engagement stars Jason Segel as Tom, a San Francisco chef who proposes to his girlfriend Violet (Emily Blunt) after a year of being together. However, though they’re both excited about the wedding, they agree to put it off when Violet is offered a post-doctorate psychology position at the University of Michigan, working alongside Professor Winton Childs (Rhys Ifans). When the couple move to Michigan, Tom struggles to find a job and ends up working on a deli counter, while Violet’s career goes from strength to strength. Eventually, the various pressures cause a strain on their relationship, which isn’t helped by a) Winton

Running time: 124 minsDirector: Nicholas Stoller Starring: Emily Blunt, Jason Segal, Chris Pratt, Alison Brie, Rhys Ifans, Jacki Weaver, Brian Posehn, Mimi Kennedy

The BadStoller maintains a good mix of physical and verbal comedy throughout, but it’s fair to say that some of the jokes don’t work, such as a couple of the violent sight gags or the contrivance of having time pass by cutting to the funeral of yet another grandparent. Similarly, the film is at least twenty minutes too long, although it does at least pull off a suitably romantic climax. The other problem is that none of the obstacles that keep the couple from marrying seem very convincing. Similarly, the plot is often frustratingly lazy, most notably in a scene that jumps forward a lengthy period of time, where Tom has a grizzly beard and seems to be having a nervous breakdown – the script requires the audience to accept that this just happened, whereas it would seem reasonable to assume that trained psychologist Violet would have noticed something was wrong and addressed the issue before things got this far.

Worth seeing? The Five Year Engagement is an entirely watchable comedy that is ultimately worth seeing purely for Alison Brie’s scene-stealing support performance.

Running your first 5k?SIMON Webster, Fitness Manager at Nuffield Health Chichester, offers advice to help you reach your goals.

Whether you’re hoping to get fit, raising money for a good cause or you just want to try something new, a five kilometre race makes a great target for beginner runners. It’s long enough to feel like you’ve achieved something, yet short enough to build enough fitness to complete in just a couple of months.

Most healthy people, even those who haven’t exercised in a long time, can train to run a 5k in eight weeks. 5k races have become hugely popular over the last few years, with hundreds of thousands of people signing up to various events across the UK, including many who have never run a race before.

The first couple of weeks of training are mainly about getting you used to running three times each week, so go easy and take it at a comfortable pace. If you’re not ready to run yet, a twenty minute walk is fine for your first session.

On your next training day, try running for a few minutes, just until you get tired, then walk until you feel ready to run again and repeat to make up the twenty minute session. But remember that you are working on increasing your fitness and that does mean pushing yourself a little.

If you’re using an eight week training schedule, after the fourth week you’ll be

halfway there. So stay focused, remind yourself of the reasons you set yourself this challenge, and think about how amazing you’ll feel once you’ve achieved your goal.

Weeks five and six: now it is time to run for at least 15 minutes (just over a mile) non-stop. This may have been impossible for you a few weeks ago, but you have trained your body and you are now ready for it.

By the end of week seven you’ll be running for 35 minutes non-stop; in week eight you should really enjoy your final week of training. You ran almost 5k the previous week, so you only have to do a little extra to go the full distance and achieve your goal.

When you arrive at the start just lap up the atmosphere. Treat the race as a celebration of

how far you’ve come in just a couple of months.Your aim is to go the distance without

stopping, but if you need to take walk breaks that’s fine, this is only your first 5k – you can always run another race now you’re a runner!

For more information about how the experts at Nuffield Health can help you reach your goals, and your free one-day pass, visit www.nuffieldhealth.com/rewards or call 01243 788678.

Hospitality and catering sector signs pledge to cut food and packaging wasteDOZENS of fast food restaurants, pubs, hotels and contract caterers have today signed a voluntary agreement to cut food and packaging waste by five per cent – the equivalent of 100 million meals – by 2015.

The pledge, called the Hospitality and Food Service Agreement, will also see leading hospitality and food service companies increase by 70 per cent the amount of packaging and waste food that is being recycled and turned into green energy. Early signatories to the agreement include both large and small and medium-sized companies, and include names such as McDonalds, Greggs, Green King, Adnams Brewery and Café Spice Namaste.

The agreement is backed by the UK, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland Governments, which will also encourage their own caterers to cut waste.

Government waste body WRAP, which has coordinated the agreement, said that if just 25 per cent of the industry signed up to the commitment, the measures could save business £76 million by the end of 2015. They will also bring about savings of around 570,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Pubs, restaurants, hotels and takeaways produce around 3.4 million tonnes of food waste a year, almost half of which is being thrown away, mainly to landfill, according to WRAP. Along with food, the hospitality

industry is also throwing away more than 500,000 tonnes of glass, paper and card. It estimates the hospitality industry is losing £724 million a year by not tackling its food waste properly.

"Tackling food waste brings significant financial and environmental benefits, as already demonstrated through our work on household food waste and within the Courtauld Commitment," said Dr Liz Goodwin, ceo, WRAP, who is urging more businesses to sign up to the agreement.

In all 69 organisations have signed up to the agreement and a steering group has been set up to review progress on delivery against the targets and share good practice.

WRAP said it will provide businesses with support to equip them to meet the commitments through online tools, workshops, working groups and expert advice.

Largest McDonald's outlet set for OlympicsMcDonald’s has unveiled it’s biggest outlet outside the Olympics stadium, and the fast food joint believes 3,000 square-meter site, which is tipped to serve 50,000 Big Macs in just four weeks could be a hit with both families and athletes.

The fast food joint’s UK boss, Jill McDonald, also slammed critics condemning the company’s partnership with the London Olympics.

McDonald’s huge restaurant is just one of four in the Olympic Park. They include a 24-hour tented restaurant in the Athletes Village.

“The one in the Athletes Village is likely to be the busiest of all of them and athletes know more than most people what they should and shouldn’t be eating,” The Sun quoted McDonald, as saying.

“Being here helps us show people how different we are to people’s perception of

the ‘old’ McDonald’s. We are confident that we have the breadth of menu to meet anybody’s needs,” she added.

The Academy of Royal Medical Colleges is one of the organisations to lament McDonald’s role as Official Restaurant Partner of the 2012 Games. But McDonald’s sees the Games as the perfect chance to show how far it has progressed in the past decade.

The restaurant in the Olympic Park’s “World Square” will offer wraps and mango smoothies alongside the famous Big Mac and fries.

Two hundred staff from across the UK will be working at any one time in the restaurant. They will serve 14,500 people a day from 20 tills and terminals in “express” lanes.

Call to ban cola ingredient linked to cancer THE CHEMICAL, which gives some cola-flavoured drinks their caramel colour, has been linked to causing cancer according to laboratory tests.

The levels of the additive, known as 4-methylimidazole (4-MI), have already been reduced in Coca-Cola and Pepsi in the United States, after the state of California stipulated any food or drink containing it must be labelled with a cancer warning.

No such change has yet been adopted in Britain or the rest of the world.

Campaigners have now called on manufacturers to “respect the health of consumers”, and intend to write to health ministers calling for a ban of the colouring,

Coca-Cola strenuously denies there is any human health risk from 4-MI, claiming no food safety watchdog in Britain and Europe has assessed it as a concern. The drink complies fully with European laws.

Coca-Cola strenuously denies there is any human health risk from 4-MI, claiming no food safety watchdog in Britain and Europe has assessed it as a concern. The drink complies fully with European laws.

According to research by American group Center for Science in the Public Interest, the amount of 4-MI found in British cans of Coca-Cola is 135 micrograms – 34 times higher than that found in the US drinks.

Laboratory tests have shown that 4-MI can lead to increased tumours in animals, but no reports have been detected in humans.

Malcolm Clark, campaign co-ordinator at the Children’s Food Campaign, told the Daily Mail: “Coca-Cola seems to be treating its UK consumers with disdain. The company should respect the health of all of its customers around the world, by using caramel colouring that is free of known cancer-causing chemicals.

“The UK Government must regulate to protect public health from companies that aggressively market sugar-laden drinks that lead to obesity, diabetes and tooth decay.”

A spokesman for the British Soft Drinks Association told the Daily Mail there was no need to ban caramel colours containing 4-MI and said: “The 4-MI levels found in food and drink products pose no health or safety risks.

“Outside the state of California, no regulatory agency in the world considers the exposure of the public to 4-MI as present in caramels as an issue.”

Coca-Cola said it already planned to alter the use of the caramel colouring in Britain, but could not disclose a timescale for the change.

It said: “We intend to expand the use of the reduced 4-MI caramel globally as this will allow us to streamline and simplify our supply chain, manufacturing, and distribution systems.”

Health & Beauty

Denise Kelly

I HAVE BEEN lucky enough to be doing lots of work in the corporate field lately and I have to say, I am loving the challenge! I think in the past the link between Nutrition and outstanding health has been ignored by many corporations as a key ingredient needed for a successful and thriving business. By optimizing the energy of an individual you can improve the work force on all levels, therefore a better and higher quality of performance and achievement is obtained. This is not only in the business world, but within the personal life too. It has been proved in many studies that a happy personal life creates a better and more productive work force. It is now, being recognized by many, and I think this fast growing trend of education and accurate training around the power of Nutrition is the answer corporations all over the world have been looking for. By embracing this concept there is hope of managing the biggest killer that affects high-powered business executives globally. This killer is STRESS!

According to a number of surveys, stress related illness is responsible for killing 110 million people every year. What is life all about? Surely you are not working so hard during your life to die of a heart attack prematurely, or develop a serious disease

that will be debilitating and stop you doing the things you love?

Nutrition plays a vital role in the success of any individual and it is being introduced more and more into the corporate world to greatly reduce stress related illness and improve the individual’s lifestyle and overall performance. The power of good nutrition is often underestimated, and when the work force is educated properly around the massive benefits of good Nutrition they can develop a clear understanding of the reasons why it is so important and the realization of the direct impact it can have on the entire success of a company.

The body is, as we all know, extremely complex, however given the right tools and simple explanations it is possible to understand very quickly how it can perform to its maximum capability on a

Good Nutrition = Success in abundance!daily basis. In an ideal world I am sure we all want to feel healthy, energized, motivated, focused, calm and in control of our lives. Nutrition can not only help all these things, but also plays an important role in our levels of concentration, improved brain function and the creativity and openness for new and exciting ideas. This can be, and is, an achievable reality for many companies now and the happiness, success and overall wellbeing of employees is essential when producing the best possible quality of work.

I started working in the Baltics about a year ago when I became involved with Steve Neale, the creator/founder of BCS, the Behavioral change Specialists. BCS are well known in that region for their successful training in major corporations around E.I. (Emotional Intelligence training). This concept is taking the business world by storm and the powerful combination of working with emotional intelligence and improving Nutrition is proving to enhance and elevate an individual’s performance to epic proportions. It also contributes greatly to the overall success of businesses worldwide. This concept has also been taken into well-known and respected business schools and is seen as one of the

best and most motivating modules of the training. It gives a different perspective on what’s important to become, sustain, maintain and improve success what ever you are involved with.

My corporate seminars are all about improving energy and they are vibrant, informative, motivating and inspiring. I think we are making great progress and moving forward in the world of hard business. Its great to be a part of something that is creating change and seeing people taking more care of their physical and emotional needs is inspiring. With peak health the world is a much happier place and when employees realize this, the work force becomes a very different place to be!!

Take charge of your own health, and the health of your company member’s…..because life is for thriving, not just surviving.

NHS Trust crisis 'a wake up call'NHS trusts facing financial turmoil must be identified before they get to breaking point, like one in London, the British Medical Association said.

Dr Hamish Meldrum, chairman of council at the BMA, made his comments after Health Secretary Andrew Lansley seeks to turn around one trust losing £1 million a week.

South London Healthcare NHS Trust will be the first in the country to be put under the control of a special administrator tasked with putting it on a viable footing.

A further 20 trusts are facing serious financial difficulties which could ultimately see them in the same situation.

"There isn't any flexibility or financial leeway in the system," said Dr Meldrum. "This really is a wake up call that one has to try to bring in some policies which actually find out about trusts that are in difficulty long before they get to the extent where you have to bring in the receivers effectively, or administration, and to sort out the problem."

South London Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs three hospitals, has been criticised over standards of care and has run up deficits of more than £150 million over the past three years.

Despite efforts to improve its financial performance, it is still thought to be on track to lose between £30 and £75 million a year for the next five years.

Its chief executive was informed on Monday night that the trust is likely to be put into the "unsustainable providers regime" which was introduced by the last Labour government but never before used.

Mr Lansley sent a letter as the first step in the legal process towards installing a special administrator using the powers. The administrator will take over the board and recommend measures to the Health Secretary to put the trust's finances on a sustainable basis.

The trust runs Queen Mary's in Sidcup, the Queen Elizabeth in Woolwich and the Princess Royal University Hospital in Bromley. It has released a statement reassuring patients that services would continue as normal.

IN BRITAIN a healthy waist measures is 80cm (31.49in) but researchers have found the average woman measures in at 84.9cm (33.43in).

Nuffield Health examined data from more than 30,000 women and found a staggering 57 per cent had a waist larger than the healthy size.

These women are tempting the likes of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, infertility and cancer and Dr Davina Deniszczyc, professional head of physicians and diagnostics at Nuffield Health, said the problem is 'worrying'.

'Fat being stored around the waist can contribute to significant health issues, such as breast cancer and infertility,' she

explained. And it would seem women in the north

of England have the biggest problem on their hands with an average measurement of 87cm, compared to 81.9cm in London.

Dr Deniszczyc continued: 'Whilst waist size may seem like a cosmetic issue, this isn't about women fitting into their skinny jeans. Rather, it's an important indicator of overall health and well-being, particularly when taken into account with other health measurements.'

Researchers also said 52.5 per cent of the women have a body mass index (BMI) higher than the healthy average.

Just over 16 per cent of those polled were moderately or morbidly obese.

Kate Moss' Model DaughterKATE MOSS nine-year-old daughter Lila Grace and her friend Iris Law love staging their own modeling shows and photoshoots.

Kate Moss' daughter stages her own modelling shows.

The British supermodel's nine-year-old offspring Lila Grace - whose father is Kate's former boyfriend Jefferson Hack - and her friend Iris Law, 11, love working together on their own photoshoots.

Iris - whose parents are Kate's friends Sadie Frost and Jude Law - told aMUSE: "My god-sister, Lila, and I have gotten into the habit of creating little photo shoots every time we see each other. I enjoy this, because it's everything I love in one go; it's creative, it makes you think- it's fashion."

Lila and Iris' passion for fashion could be traced back to Kate as when the older girl turned nine in 2009, the 38-year-old beauty threw a model-themed birthday party for her.

A source said at the time: "Kate had been teaching Iris and Lila Grace how to model and how to walk the catwalk properly in preparation for the party.

"They could hardly have a better teacher.

"All of the girls at the bash wanted to be Kate. She brought along lots of clothes for

them and the girls had their hair and make-up done especially.

"Kate also presided over all of the accessories to make them look as catwalk-ready as possible. She was teaching them how to master her famous hip swagger and her 'I don't care look'.

THE SPICE GIRLS were back together once more yesterday in London to celebrate the launch of the new musical Viva Forever.

All five of the girls were on hand to help promote the show at the Renaissance London Hotel. Jennifer Saunders and Judy Cramer created the show which is based on their music.

The photocall took place on the steps were it all began, as it was the video location for their first single Wannabe.

Each of the ladies stuck to their own style for the shoot, and obviously thought they were past colour-co-ordinating looks and super high platforms.

Mel B wore a fitted Lanvin dress, showing off her incredible honed figure. She paired it with a pair of gold Christian Louboutin spike Pigalles and wore her hair in a tight ballerina bun.

Melanie Chisholm - Mel C - was my favourite at the event. She chose a white sleeveless maxi dress from Acne. The sheer skirted dress feautured a spilt to show off

Spice up your life

her tanned legs. She paired the dress with beautiful tumbling curls.

Geri Halliwell went for a sweet and innocent look in her lace mini dress.

Emma Bunton chose a simple and effective navy blue wrap dress. It showed off her curves beautifully. It was the addition of her printed blue and white Brian Atwood

slingback shoes that stopped the look from being boring and mumsy though.

And ofcourse fashion designer Victoria Beckham was wearing a dress from her own collection. The black fitted dress came from her Fall 2012 collection. She paired it with her favourite Tom Ford peep toe boots that she wore a lot during her tour of Japan.

Kylie hits out' at Madonna’s fashion sense KYLIE MINOGUE is one of the nicest ladies in music but the singer wasn't afraid to speak her mind when she appeared as a guest on Joan Rivers' Fashion Police.

Rivers asked Minogue what her take was on Madonna's 'boob flashing' during her performance in Istanbul was.

She responded by asking: ''Was she caught up in the moment? Was it premeditated? Who knows?''

Adding: ''But I think it's got people more perplexed than kind of excited about it.''

Next up was Madonna's cheerleader tour outfit, which Rivers was quick off the mark: 'Madonna as a cheerleader - what school does she go to? Our Lady of Osteoporosis? She looks like she flunked 10th grade 48 times.'

However, Kylie was a little more reserved and simply said: 'No. Just no.'

Meanwhile, Madonna was spotted filming on the set of her new music video ‘Turn Up The Radio’ today in sexy attire that most women half her age wouldn’t dare to wear.

The 53-year-old megastar showed off her trim figure in an all-black skimpy ensemble as she sat and danced on the boot of a vintage sports car.

Duchess Catherine's 35K Clothing BillBRITAIN'S DUCHESS Catherine has spent at least £35,000 on clothes this year, and her father-in-law Prince Charles is to foot the bill.

Britain's Duchess Catherine has spent at least £35,000 on clothes this year.

However, the Duchess of Cambridge's huge bill for high-end and couture clothing will not be paid by herself or husband Prince William as her father-in-law Prince Charles has agreed to meet the cost.

Charles' official household budget will fund anything Catherine wears for "work-related engagements" as William ostensibly earns only £44,000 a year as an RAF helicopter pilot - the remainder of his money, such as the £10 million he inherited from his late mother's estate, is classed as private income.

Despite the huge bill, royal insiders insist the duchess chooses her outfits to "fit the occasion" and will continue to re-use dresses and wear more affordable garments.

A source said: "The duke and duchess have attended a couple of black tie events recently but there will continue to be more daytime and low-key engagements in future which will involve her wearing appropriate lower

cost."Charles is extremely fond of his 'darling

daughter-in-law', as he likes to call Kate, and - for the time being at least - does not mind indulging her in the slightest."

Catherine's bill could be lower but she has instructed her staff to never pay less than the going rate for garments, and refuses to accept any of the free clothes she is sent by designers every month.

Instead, if she likes a particular piece, her Private Secretary Rebecca Deacon, is asked to buy it on her behalf.

Charles' Duchy of Cornwall - a private estate of land and property holdings - funds the public work of himself, wife Camilla and sons William and Prince Harry and his official expenditure, which will be released next week, will also include Catherine's clothing allowance.

Home & GardenButterflies that sparkleWITH the right shrub and flower selection your garden could be teaming with some of the countries most fantastic butterflies. June is the epitome of summer with burst of colour and lavish scents filling every area of our senses. Like us, the butterfly loves this

time of year and inhabits many man-made and natural environments. Our gardens can be adapted to meet the requirements of many of the UK’s species. Institutions across horticulture including RHS, Britain in Bloom and Institute of Horticulture encourage us to introduce wild flowers to create a haven for wildlife.

Here are just a few ways to help increase the number of butterflies into our gardens.• Select the right plants: Native butterflies are attracted to native plants for feeding in the

summer months. The sweet nectar attracts the adults, and the succulent leaves feed the caterpillars and larvae. Plants to select are marigolds, cornflowers, sweet Williams and verbena.• Create the right environment: Butterflies are on the look out for safe places to lay their eggs. Some are more particular than others such as the Holly Blue. As the name suggests they are keen feeders and users of holly. Others love a damp water side setting, or in the case of many moths a calm quiet woodland setting.• Leave fallen fruit under trees: It encourages all sorts of insects, some not to welcome but Red Admirals and Painted Ladies will flock to drink the sweet juices of pears and apples.• Create a wildflower area in your garden: Plants like wild garlic, mustard, sorrel and many other herbs are a fabulous attraction for Orange-tips and Green-veined Whites.• Let an area of stinging nettles flourish if possible: Caterpillars of Peacock, Red Admiral, Comma and Small Tortoiseshell eat the leaves and will give you a fantastic display in the summer.

Peugeot 208 awarded key accolade in the week it goes on salePEUGEOT has been awarded two key awards at the prestigious Auto Express New Car Awards 2012 at a ceremony at the Grand Connaught Rooms, in London.

The Peugeot 208 wins the Best Supermini Class. Editor-in-Chief of Auto Express, Steve Fowler, said of the 208; “Peugeot is back on top of the small car class. The 208 has got it all: style, quality, space and kit, while it’s good to drive and super-efficient, too.”

The Peugeot RCZ Sports Coupé wins the Best Coupé Class. Steve said; “The RCZ continues to reign supreme as the best coupé on the road thanks to its winning blend of great styling and agile handling. Even better, it's much more affordable than its looks suggest.”

Tim Zimmerman, Managing Director at Peugeot UK, said; “This is a great week for Peugeot. In the first week that the new 208 goes on sale in the UK, we are especially pleased to receive this key award. The Auto Express Best Supermini award is the 208’s first international product accolade and recognises its lead position in the highly competitive small car sector. We are confident it is a stylish product of true

regeneration, and hopefully this will be the first of many awards to come.

“That the RCZ Sports Coupé has again - for the third year running – been awarded

the Auto Express Best Coupé prize serves to demonstrate our improved product desirability, which increases with every new car we launch.”

Spyder Club welcome the Ducati 1199 Panigale to their fleetTHE WAIT is finally over for Spyder Club as they welcome the Ducati 1199 Panigale to their fleet.

Spyder Club is an exclusive motorcycle hire club whose members enjoy some of the latest and most exotic modern motorcycles and for many members the highlight of the 2012 additions to the fleet is the Ducati 1199 Panigale. It has been a tantalising wait for members anticipating the arrival of the Panigale, but the bike finally made its first appearance at the recent Spyder Club Open Day.

The Panigale joined the Diavel as well as the new Streetfighter 848 on the Spyder Club fleet and these three bikes thoroughly entertained the members and guests during the Open Day. Mark Smith-Young of the Spyder Club was blown away by his first experience of the 1199 Panigale and commented, “When on the bike you immediately feel special, the engine is so smooth for a twin but hasn’t lost the Ducati character. It turns in so quickly, the lightness and agility of the chassis is something riders hadn’t experienced before and the pull from the motor is astonishing. In layman’s terms, it’s brilliant!”

Future looking bright for City

VOLUNTEERS from all sections of Chichester City Football Club joined together at the weekend to prepare their ground for the season ahead. Players, supporters and family from the Ladies, Men’s and youth teams turned up on Saturday to weed, paint, clean, plant, repair, move and do anything else that was required of them.

It was a show of unity at a club that has experienced huge difficulties on and off the pitch in recent years and one that signals a bright new future.

The City's Club has fought for its survival in the two years since new premises were completed at Oaklands Park. A long, drawn out dispute with its landlords, Chichester

District Council, has been followed by a further lengthy period of reconciliation and negotiation but now, as the new season approaches, it looks as though a full lease over the ground will finally be issued to the club. This will mean that, for the first time since it's completion, the club will be able to realise the commercial potential of its premises and begin to stabilise itself off of the pitch and develop all playing sections on it.

Chichester are still not sure if their men's first team will be playing in the first or second division of the County League next season but remain confident that, wherever they may be, the team will flourish. The club are delighted by the appointment of Joint

Managers Neil Sherlock and Alex Twitchen in the closing weeks of last season and know that they have the necessary knowledge, approach and skill to rebuild their team and develop gifted young players from both the clubs youth section and local community alike. The club will also benefit from the set-up of a men's developmental squad, its election to the Suburban Football League and appointment of ex U18's manager Sean Forry.

It will be a great chance for those entering senior football to compete with young, developing squads from; Conference, Ryman’s and other senior county clubs. Keith Tallent is appointed County U18's manager, whilst Pat Loten continues with Arun & Chi League U18's, both aiming for success with squads built around those remaining from last seasons' successful U18's and U16's teams. Andy Gilbert has become the new Chairman of the clubs' youth section and will, likewise, be hoping to see the individual teams emulate the exceptional levels of achievement seen last year and, at the top age group, follow their predecessors into the senior section.

The Ladies also enjoyed a wonderful 2011/12 season with the first team taking the South East Counties title. They are now looking forward to continuing their climb up the National league ladder with manager, Matt Wright, relishing the prospect of facing opposition like, Crystal Palace, Norwich and Ipswich in the South East Combination league. Caz Henry-Evens is again at the helm for the reserves and confident that her young side will pick up where they left off

and continue their improvement in the S.E. Counties Reserve Premier league. The ladies will also be looking to expand and increase their recently created 'Girls Soccer School' and will continue to provide low cost entry into and development in football throughout the district.

The club is one of very few teams in the County to hold the F.A. Chartership and has excellent links with the City's main higher education providers and with plans also in place to provide local football opportunities to disabled children and adults from the district, it is becoming clear that Chichester City F.C. has matured into a club that is focussed on its place in the community as, both a servant to its residents and as a club to make that community proud of its achievements and conduct.

They would very much like to hear from any individuals who would like to get involved in the day to day operations of the club and from local businesses that may wish to provide sponsorship, or assistance, no matter how small, and become a partner of the club at a very exciting time. Similarly, they are interested to hear from anyone interested in playing football at the club at any age or level.

If you are interested in becoming involved as a helper, coach, sponsor or player, please contact Sean Forry via the club's website.

Any senior players, who believe they are at a level to play County Football and with an interest in joining the club, are invited to attend the club at 7pm on Wednesday 4th July for a meeting and light training session.

Chichester’s clubhouse can now be fully let out for community use

Chichester District’s sports stars recognised at awards ceremonyTALENTED young sports stars in the Chichester District were honoured at the annual Youth Sport Achievement Awards.

The ceremony, held on Saturday night (23 June), coincided with international Olympic Day.

The Youth Sport Achievement Awards are the biggest celebration of sporting achievement in Chichester District. Over 400 people enjoyed the ceremony at Westgate Leisure, Chichester.

Organised by Chichester District Council, in partnership with Chichester Priory Rotary Club, the award scheme has been running since 2000. It was developed to recognise:• sporting excellence among local young people; and,• the commitment of coaches, volunteers, and supporters across the district.

The main award of the evening was the Dennis Polhill Award for individual youth

sport achievement. The winner of this award was Ben Chrystall. Ben, a young sailor, moved into Laser class at 15 and represented Great Britain at the 2011 Laser Youth World Championships in La Rochelle. He has now been selected to represent Great Britain in the European Laser Standard under-21 championship in Belgium.

The Team of the Year Award was awarded to Chichester City Under-18s football team. The team is characterised by an incredible team spirit, where performance is always about the team rather than individuals.

The Volunteer of the Year Award went to Sally Walker of Dragonflyers Trampoline Club. Sally, the club’s Treasurer, helped to save the club when it was in danger of closing last year. She takes on many roles to help support the club including administration, spots at trampolines and helping at competitions.

The Coach of the Year Award was awarded to Stewart McKenzie, a volunteer coach at Chichester Runners and Athletics Club. He helps trains the runners several times week and travels to support the runners in all running disciplines.

Winner of the Young Persons Commitment to Sport Award was Max Wiseman. From the age of seven, Max, now aged 17, has been involved with local youth football teams. Although a full-time student, he still finds time to coach young people in Selsey several nights a week. The Sussex FA awarded Max the FA Young Leader and Volunteer Award in 2011 at the FA Community Awards and it has also awarded him with a scholarship for a coaching course.

The Outstanding Sports Performance of the Year Award was presented to George Hendrie. George, a fencer, is a member of the Great Britain squad. In the last 12 months

he has won two Commonwealth medals, one gold and one silver.

The Outstanding Contribution to Sport Award went to Ivan Western. Ivan, a member of West Wittering Sailing Club, has helped to develop the club’s junior section. He uses a week of his annual leave to organise and run an annual week of activities for over 60 youngsters between eight and 15-years-old.

Cllr Eileen Lintill, who presented an award, said: “Congratulations to everyone! The district should be very proud. We have a great many outstanding sports stars, coaches, and volunteers. It was fitting that these awards should be presented on international Olympic Day. Who knows, some of these young people may, in the not too distant future, be competing themselves for their country at the highest level in future Olympic Games!”
