A NOTE FROM THE DRAMATURG

Chicago is set in 1924, in the midst of prohibition in the United States. Corruption rules the streets and Jazz is a popular form of entertainment. Another source of entertain-ment was the sensational coverage of murder trials depicted in the newspapers. These trials were followed as closely then as we follow our favorite celebrities today. Female murderers proved to be particular favorites. In the play, Roxie says to Velma, “I love to follow the murders. Yours is my favorite.”

The events depicted in Chicago were inspired by actual events in 1924. The play, origi-nally written by Maurine Dallas Watkins, is based on the trials of Belva Gaertner and Beulah Annan, who inspired the characters of Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart, respec-tively. Watkins was a reporter who worked at the Chicago Tribune. She covered the murders and subsequent trials of the two women. Watkins focused on the sensationalist angle of the cases, characterizing the two as “jazz babies corrupted by men and liquor.” Chicago remained dormant for decades, until the 1960s, when legendary choreogra-pher Bob Fosse offered to buy the rights to the play, intending to adapt it as a musical. Watkins declined. Following her death, Fosse purchased the rights, and the musical Chicago was born. -Loren Spencer
