The cycle has come to an end. In thepast year, as every year, we read andwere inspired by the Torah—the story

of our nation. We were awed byAdam (how awesome to be

created by G‑d and have the world foryourself), sympathized with Noah (who hadto see the whole world go down), wereimpressed with Abraham (first thrown intothe furnace, then almost sacrificed his son),were caught up in the sibling rivalry betweenJoseph and his brothers, and held our breathsat the breathtaking saga of the Exodus. And then, from when Moses received the

Torah on Mount Sinai until his final departureon Mount Nebo, we experienced thetumultuous forty-year journey through thedesert. Laws, mistakes, complaints, smashingof the tablets, spies, plagues and the entiregamut of the nail-biting drama which ourdrama-addicted ancestors lived through ontheir historic trek from the pyramids to theland of Israel. The Torah reading everyShabbat morning was quite an entertainingand educational experience. And as we start all over again, we hold our

breath, aware of the journey to come. Whatlessons, insights, and inspiration will we derivefrom our patriarchs and matriarchs next timearound? But before we roll back the Torah from the

Jordan River to 2,500 years earlier, let usreflect for a moment on Moses' final words, uttered just before he went up to themountain and was buried by G‑d. Let his lastwords linger in our hearts:"Fortunate are you, O Israel…"What wonderful parting words. Moses was

proclaiming to the Jew of Israel and ofBabylonia, the Jew of Tunisia and Spain, ofFrance, Poland, and America:"My beloved nation and my fellow Jews, how

lucky, how fortunate you are. How wonderfulit is to be a Jew."No, being a Jew is not an "eternal

damnation."No, it's not hard to be a Jew; nor is it a

burden you must carry. No, secularism, assimilation, and self-hate are

not the way for a Jew.Rather…Yes, you are lucky to be Jewish!Yes, although you may live through tough

times on earth for the next three millennia, you should – and will – always hold your headhigh!Yes, being Jewish is a gift, a cause for joy, a

piece of heaven.Yes, Torah and mitzvot are a blessing. They

connect us to our Creator, and transform thisworld into a better place for all mankind.Dear friend:As the month of Tishrei comes to a close and

we look back on the most powerful month ofthe year – accepting G‑d's sovereignty onRosh Hashanah, being forgiven on YomKippur, uniting with G‑d and our fellow JewsonSukkot, dancing our souls and soles out onSimchat Torah – it is now the time to declareour pride in our Jewishness.I am a Jew and I'm proud.

KOSHER ALERTS!

EUROPEAN LISTS OF APPROVED WHISKY

Q. I noticed on your liquor list that youspecifically do not recommend a specific whisky thatI saw listed as acceptable in the liquor list and“kashrus guide” of a European hashgachah. Why isthat?

A. The item you saw is a liqueur which requireshashgachah. The European hashgachah that liststhat item as approved (but not as certified) follows alower standard than we do as to which items qualifyas “approved”. Therefore, although they list it asapproved we are not able to recommend theproduct.

BABY FOOD (JARS)Q. Some of the canned baby food I see in the

store has a hechsher and other varieties from thesame company do not. The one I was looking athad just peas and water which seemed to pose no

kashrus issue. May I buy it?A. We would not recommend it. After the baby food is put into the jar, the entire jar

is put into a machine called a “retort” where the jaris cooked at high temperatures so as to prevent thefood from spoiling. Those same retorts are usuallyalso used to cook non-kosher varieties of baby foodsuch as those with beef or chicken. The hashgachahon the label assures you that the specific jar wasproduced on kosher machinery – either because thecompany has special machines for kosher or becausethey kasher the retort before they produce thatvariety of baby food – but if there is no hechsherthen the jar may have been cooked when themachinery was non-kosher. Accordingly, werecommend that you should only purchase jars ofbaby food that have hashgachah, even if theingredients seem innocuous.

JEWISH HUMORItÊs funny because we say so!

A House on the RoofLevy built a sukkahon the roof of his

apartment buildingseveral days before

the eight-day holidayof Sukkot began. Afterthe holiday began, thelandlord noticed it anddemanded that it be

removed immediately,claiming it was a

violation of the termsof the building lease.Levy refused, telling

the landlord that sincethis was a religious

observance, he hadthe right to build the

sukkah there.

The landlord disagreedand took the case to

court.

In court, the landlordargued that the

sukkah was unsightly, against the terms ofthe lease, and was a

fire hazard. Levyargued that his

religious rights wouldbe ignored. The

judge, who happenedto be Jewish, listened

patiently and thenoffered his verdict.

“I agree with thelandlord in this case, and I therefore rulethat you have tendays from today to

take down your hut.”

On ACT tests, our seniors beat the statewide average by over 20%. The finest yeshivot in Israel and yeshiva colleges in the U.S. welcome them with open arms. Ivy League universities welcome them, often with advanced placement credit. So wherever your son is headed in life, make FYHS his next stop.
