14 JULY 2012 TO ADVERTISE 773.336.8225

Recently, the expression that Jewstraditionally wished each other before

the start of the Tisha B'Av fast was replacedby what one might call a more evocative one. What was once "have an easy fast" has beentransformed into "have a meaningful fast."While "easy" or "meaningful" are notnecessarily contradictory, nevertheless, inorder to make any fast meaningful, we firstmust understand why we are fasting. And inorder to understand why we are fasting, wemust think. A good place to begin is a verse inEicha, the Book of Lamentations, composed

by the prophet Yirmiyahu as he watched theTemple, and the society of his times, erodeand crumble, and the Jewish people go intoexile.

Despite suffering a terrible fate, seeing hisleaders, his beloved people, and his cherishedTemple all destroyed, he tells the nation: "Ofwhat shall a living man complain? A strongman for his sins! Let us search and examineour ways, and return to Hashem" (Lameneta-tions 3:39-40).

The prophet's question, "Of what shall a

Tisha B'AvUnquestioned Answers

living man complain?" is difficult tounderstand. People always complain. Didn'tYirmiyahu experience enough to complainabout? Also why does Yirmiyahu ask about aliving man? Dead men don't tell tales, and theydon't complain either. So why the extra word?

Perhaps the second question answers thefirst, and the second verse emphasizes theanswer.

The Chasam Sofer once met a very old manand asked him the secret of his longevity.

"I know that long life is a gift," the great sagesaid. "Tell me, what exemplary act did you dothat merited you these long years?" The oldman looked up and smiled. "Actually, I didnothing special. You see I have a differenttheory about long life. I stuck to my theory, and it worked for me."

"And what is that theory?" the great sageinquired.

The old man wrinkled his deeply lined face."Like myself, all my friends went through theirshare of tzorus and misfortunes. We all do.They are, however, not here any longer. I am."

"But why?" prodded the Chasam Sofer."That was exactly my question. What is thesecret of your longevity? Yes! We all have ourtzorus. But they didn't break you! You are stillalive and in very good health. What is thedifference between you and your friends?"

"You see," answered the old man., "myfriends asked 'Why?' I, however, did not."

The Chasam Sofer seemed puzzled, but theman continued his monologue. "You see, every time tragedy struck, my friends wouldask the Almighty, why did this happen? Howdid I come to deserve this? They would pleadand prod the Creator for answers that nomortal mind could understand. And you knowwhat happened?"

The Chasam Sofer shook his head, carefulnot to interrupt the man's train of thought.

"Hashem said, 'Do you really want tounderstand? Come, I will show you.' And soHe took them to a place where all themysteries of life are revealed, a place wherethe past and the future collide and today'sactions are the answers to history'sexpostulations."

The man continued. "I, on the other, hand, was not so curious. And if I was, I did notturn to Hashem and ask, 'Why?' Rather, Iaccepted what happened."

Then the man's face began to glow. "And doyou know what? He never invited me upstairsto explain anything!"

Perhaps the essence of our annual mourningservice can be summed up with Yirmiyahu'sword's that analyze a mortal approach toimmortal justice. "Of what shall a living mancomplain? A strong man for his sins! Let ussearch and examine our ways, and return toHashem."

We may have questions, but such questionsdo not require us to obsess about finding newanswers. Instead, the only answer we can haveis to search our own souls with introspectionand return to Hashem.

In truth, we are not put in this world todemand answers. We are here to improveourselves and ultimately, the world. And weare here to understand when to turn to ourown lives for answers, instead of to theAlmighty with questions, so that we maysurvive the tragedies with both faith and lifeintact.

Have a meaningful (and easy) fast.

Soup to Nuts Your kashrus Questions. . . Answered

Written by Rabbi Dovid CohenA service of the Chicago Rabbinical Council2701 West Howard | 773-465-3900

KINGKLIP

Q. I am a member of a shul with a significantSouth African presence, and a kashrus sheilah hasrecently been a subject of significant controversy. Indiscussing the issue with a friend, I was told of yourunique expertise in such matters, and was hoping thatyour expertise and guidance may help clarify thesheilah, and provide us with some insight. Thesheilah relates to a fish known asthe kingklip.

A. I was working at the OU Kashrus Departmentwhen this issue was first raised there, and the OUPoskim decided that since this issue is only relevantto the South African (and some South American)Jewish communities, the local Rabbis should be theones to make the decision as to the fish’s kashrus, and they therefore refrained from offering theirpersonal opinions on the matter. The tumult whichhas since arisen about the kashrus of kingklip hasshown the wisdom of their approach. Thus, Iencourage you to raise the question with your localRabbi from South Africa, who will surely be able todirect you on this important question.

CALCULATING ARLAH YEARS

Q. In June 2010 I planted a dwarf apple tree thatI purchased from a nursery. May I eat the fruit of thetree as soon it they grow or must I wait the arlahyears?

A. The Torah says that one must wait 3 years aftera tree is planted before one can eat from its fruit; thismitzvah is called “arlah”. During the fourth year thefruit are called “revai” and may be eaten only afterbeing redeemed in a specific manner. [Speak to yourRabbi about how to redeem revai.]Any fruit thatbegan growing after the end of the fourth year maybe eaten without restriction.

Typically mitzvos that depend on the land are applicable only in the land of Israel; arlah is anexception as it applies worldwide. Therefore your treeis subject to arlah restrictions and one may not eat orderive benefit from any arlah fruits.

Since you planted your tree in the summer of2010/5770 it will finish its first year on RoshHashanah2010/5771, its second year on RoshHashanah2011/5772, and the third year of arlah onthe 15th of Shevat of 5773 (January 26, 2013). (Ayoung sapling finishes its years on RoshHashanah (1Tishrei), while a tree (older than three years) finishesits years on the 15th of Shevat.) From 15 Shevat5773 to 15 Shevat 5774 the apples are revai andshould be redeemed.

If your tree was older than one year old when youpurchased it, the arlah years may be shortened.

The cRc only certifies as Cholov Yisroel icecream at Dairy Star (3472 W. It is the cus-tomer’s responsibility to ascertain that the icecream comes from the indicated spouts. ThecRc does not certify any toppings as pareveor Cholov Yisroel.
