Chicago Cubs (60-82) vs. Cincinnati Reds (82-62) Information © 2013 Chicago Cubs Media Relations Office September 9, 2013 … Great American Ball Park … Game No. 143 … Road Game No. 68 LHP Travis Wood (8-11, 3.17) vs. RHP Bronson Arroyo (13-10, 3.62) ON THE ROAD AGAIN: The Chicago Cubs tonight begin their longest road trip of the season – an 11-game, 11-day, three-city, National League Central odyssey through Cincinnati (three games), Pittsburgh (four games starting Thursday) and Milwaukee (four games starting a week from tonight) … this adventure ultimately concludes a stretch of 14-consecutive games against the N.L. Central that began this past weekend vs. Milwaukee. This 11-game road trip is Chicago’s longest since September 16-26, 2004 when Hurricane Frances forced the rescheduling of a Cubs three-game set in Miami earlier that month … the storm created a 12-game, 11-day trip for the Cubs through Cincinnati, Florida, Pittsburgh and New York. In addition to 14-straight, the Cubs are in the fourth game of a season-ending stretch in which they play 20 of their final 23 contests against the N.L. Central division … the lone exception is a three- game series at Wrigley against the Atlanta Braves, September 20-22. Yesterday’s game concluded a stretch in which the Cubs played 19 of 25 games at Wrigley Field … the Cubs close out their season with 14 of their final 20 games on the road starting tonight. THIS IS ON THE RECORD: After going 6-4 (.600) in their first 10 games after the All-Star Break, the Cubs are 12-27 (.308) in their last 39 games starting July 29 … the Cubs have won four of their last eight games, but have lost 14 of their last 21 games overall. The Cubs have a winning record (41-29) when scoring more than three runs in a game and are 32-11 when reaching five runs … the Cubs are 9-60 when allowing four or more runs. The Cubs are nearly .500 against teams outside their division this year at 35-37 while turning in a 19- 38 mark against the National League Central, the second-lowest winning percentage (.333) by any team against its own division in baseball. LEANING TO THE LEFT: Today’s Cubs starting pitcher Travis Wood enters the game with a 3.17 ERA and joins fellow southpaw Chris Rusin (2.89 ERA) in the Cubs rotation to give the club two southpaws with an ERA below 3.20 … should Wood and Rusin maintain a comparable pace the rest of the season, the Cubs could have two left-handers make at least 10 starts and each turn in an ERA of 3.80 or less in the same year for the first time in 46 years when Rich Nye (3.20 ERA, 30 starts) and Ken Holtzman (2.53 ERA, 12 starts) turned the trick. Since Holtzman and Nye, only once in the next 45 seasons have the Cubs had at least two left- handers make 10 starts and each record an ERA below 4.00, when in 2007 Ted Lilly (3.83 ERA, 34 starts) and Rich Hill (3.92 ERA, 32 starts) accomplished the feat. ROAD WARRIORS: The Cubs already have 29 wins on the road this season, six more than their total numbers of victories on the road last year … the Cubs have gone 17-15 in their last 32 road games starting June 25 after starting the season 15-20 in their first 35 road games. STALWARTS BEHIND THE DISH: Catchers Welington Castillo (894.1 innings) and Dioner Navarro (383.0) have combined to catch every inning for Chicago this season, just one of three pairs of major league catchers to be behind the plate for every inning of their team’s season … the Angels duo of Chris Iannetta and Hank Conger have turned the trick, as have the Rays Jose Molina and Jose Lobaton. The Cubs last season used six catchers (Castillo, Steve Clevenger, Koyie Hill, Blake Lalli, Anthony Recker and Geovany Soto). Castillo and Navarro have combined to bat .280 (143-for-511) while behind the plate, the third- highest average among teams’ catchers this season …. only Minnesota’s (.302) and St. Louis’ (.286) backstops have fared better. IT TAKES A VILLAGE: Cubs pitcher Scott Baker made his season debut yesterday to become the 55th player to appear for the team this year, extending a franchise record that surpasses 53 players used just last season … still looking to make their season debuts are catcher J.C. Boscan and pitcher Daniel Bard. The Cubs have utilized 13 rookies this season, including three position players (Junior Lake, Thomas Neal and Logan Watkins) and 10 pitchers (Alberto Cabrera, Kyuji Fujikawa, Justin Grimm, Chang- Yong Lim, Blake Parker, Zach Putnam, Brooks Raley, Hector Rondon, Zac Rosscup and Chris Rusin). Only five players on the current 25-man roster were on the 2012 Opening Day roster: Starlin Castro, Darwin Barney, James Russell, Jeff Samardzija and Luis Valbuena. DEBUT ACTS: Scott Baker yesterday became the 33rd player to make his Cubs debut this season, extending the franchise record that topped the former mark of 30 players to make their Cubs debut 111 years ago in 1902 … coincidentally, 1902 was the first season that the Chicago National League franchise had the Cubs moniker attached to it … thanks to Ed Hartig for his research assistance. GREGG GETS TO 30: Cubs closer Kevin Gregg on Friday recorded his 30th save of the season, and has recorded a save in exactly half of Chicago’s 60 victories … he is the 11th pitcher all-time to reach the 30- save mark in a season for Chicago, and the first since Carlos Marmol had 34 in 2011. Gregg joined the Cubs on April 16 and earned his first save a week later in Cincinnati … since that first save April 23, Gregg’s 30 saves rank fifth in the National League. THE LAKE SHOW: With two more hits yesterday, including a solo home run, Cubs outfielder Junior Lake has now collected 58 hits in his first 47 games with the Cubs … he leads all major league rookies in hits since the All-Star Break (as detailed in chart on the right) and is tied for ninth among all N.L. players. Lake on Friday became the second player this season to record both a grand slam and a bunt single in the same game … Cleveland’s Michael Born did so, July 24, against the Mariners (STATS Inc.). START ME UP: The Cubs have 79 quality starts this season, tied for fifth-most in the National League and six more than the 73 quality efforts Cubs starting pitchers recorded all of last season … in their 79 quality starts this year, Cubs pitchers have gone 38-18 with 23 no-decisions and a 1.92 ERA (115 ER/538.2 IP) … the team is 15 games over .500 in those 79 games, posting a 47-32 record. Travis Wood’s 21 quality starts rank tied for seventh in the majors, three shy of Cole Hamels’ 24 quality efforts. A COMPARISON THROUGH 142: The Cubs have a 60-82 record through 142 games this season … their record through 142 games this year is a five-win improvement on the 55-87 record the club had through 142 games last year (56-87 through 143 games) … this season, the Cubs have a -54 run differential through 142 games this year compared to a -121 differential through 141 games in 2012. ON THE ROAD AGAIN: The Chicago Cubs tonight begin their longest road trip of the season – an 11-game, 11-day, three-city, National League Central odyssey through Cincinnati (three games), Pittsburgh (four games starting Thursday) and Milwaukee (four games starting a week from tonight) … this adventure ultimately concludes a stretch of 14-consecutive games against the N.L. Central that began this past weekend vs. Milwaukee. This 11-game road trip is Chicago’s longest since September 16-26, 2004 when Hurricane Frances

forced the rescheduling of a Cubs three-game set in Miami earlier that month … the storm created a 12-game, 11-day trip for the Cubs through Cincinnati, Florida, Pittsburgh and New York.

In addition to 14-straight, the Cubs are in the fourth game of a season-ending stretch in which they play 20 of their final 23 contests against the N.L. Central division … the lone exception is a three-game series at Wrigley against the Atlanta Braves, September 20-22.
