Chicago Cubs (51-64) vs. St. Louis Cardinals (66-49) Information © 2013 Chicago Cubs Media Relations Office August 10, 2013 … Busch Stadium … Game No. 116 … Road Game No. 60 RHP Michael Wacha (1-0, 4.58) vs. RHP Carlos Villanueva (2-8, 4.16) MAKING A “BLANK”ET STATEMENT: The Chicago Cubs last night shut out the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-0, in the first of this three-game set at Busch Stadium to complete a six-game, two-city trip at Philadelphia (1-2) and St. Louis (1-0) … lefty Chris Rusin spun 6.0 shutout innings in Chicago’s first shutout in St. Louis since June 23, 1997 when Jeremi Gonzalez tossed a complete game shutout in a 3-0 victory. Rusin last night became the first Cubs lefty to throw at least 6.0 shutout innings in a start in St. Louis since Ken Holtzman threw 7.0 shutout frames, September 19, 1979 (gm. 2) at old Busch Stadium. With 3-0 victories both on July 11 at Wrigley Field and last night at Busch Stadium, the Cubs have shut out the Cardinals twice in the same season for the first time since 2010, and for just the second time in the last 16 years. CURRENT EVENTS: Chicago tonight looks for its first series victory at Busch Stadium since sweeping the Cardinals in a three-game set, September 13-15, 2010 … the Cubs are 0-6-1 in their last seven series here. Following this series, the Cubs return home for a 10-game homestand against the Reds (3 games, August 12-14), Cardinals (3 games, August 16-18) and Nationals (4 games, August 19-22). The Cubs on Monday begin a stretch in which they play 19 of 25 games at Wrigley Field through September 8. After going 6-4 in their first 10 games after the All-Star Break, the Cubs have gone 3-9 in their last 12 games … the Cubs pitched to a 3.44 ERA in the first 10 games of the “second half” and pitched to a 4.58 ERA in their last 12 games … the Cubs hit .227 in their first 10 games after the Break and have hit .235 in their last 12 games. CATCH AS CATCH CAN: Catcher Welington Castillo is hitting .405 (15-for-37) with three doubles, a home run, four RBI and a .522 on-base percentage (in which he’s walked eight times compared to six strikeouts) in his last 13 games since July 25 … his .405 average since July 25 ranks first among big league catchers and fifth overall in the majors. REGARDING VILLANUEVA: Tonight’s Cubs starter, Carlos Villanueva, is looking for his first victory in a starting role since April 18 vs. Texas (7.0 IP, 2 ER in a 6-2 win) … he’s left four starts with a lead since then, most recently up 5-2 in the seventh inning in the first game of a July 30 twinbill vs. Milwaukee (a Cubs 6-5 setback) … all told, the Cubs have plated two or fewer runs while Villanueva’s been in the game in nine of his 14 starts while he’s received no-decisions in six starts he’s left with the lead. THAT’S EITHER HERE OR THERE: The Cubs are hitting .254 in 56 home games, 25 points higher than their .229 average in 59 road games … additionally, the Cubs have a .756 OPS at home, 99 points higher than their .657 OPS on the road … in the pitching department, the Cubs have a 4.22 ERA and a .730 OPS against at home compared to a 3.71 ERA and a .694 OPS against on the road. The Cubs have already collected 28 wins on the road this season, surpassing their 23 wins away from Wrigley Field all of last season … the Cubs are 28-31 through 59 road games this season compared to 16-43 through 59 road games last year (16-44 through 60). With 28 victories on the road and 23 wins at Wrigley Field, the Cubs are one of just three teams in the majors to have more road wins than home wins this season, joining the New York Mets (25 home wins, 27 road wins) and Los Angeles Dodgers (32, 33). POSITIONAL POWER: Thanks in part to Donnie Murphy’s two-homer game Wednesday in Philadelphia, Cubs third basemen have now hit 19 homers this season, already surpassing the 12 homers hit by Cubs third basemen last season … Chicago’s 19 homers from third basemen are second-most in the N.L. and fifth-most in the majors. Cubs right fielders have hit 21 home runs this season, tied for third-most in the N.L. and fifth-most in the majors … right fielder Nate Schierholtz on Thursday hit his 15th homer of the season. QUALITY STUFF: National League All-Star Travis Wood is tied for third in the majors with 19 quality starts, one off the big league lead … Cubs pitchers have made 69 quality starts, tied for second-most in the National League … in their 69 quality starts, Cubs pitchers have gone 33-14 with 22 no-decisions and a 2.00 ERA (104 ER/468.0 IP) … the team is 15 games over .500 in those 69 games, posting a 42-27 record. IT TAKES A VILLAGE: Catcher J.C. Boscan, selected Thursday from Iowa, looks to become the 50th player to appear for the Cubs this season – that would leave the team just three players shy of the franchise- record 53 players who appeared for the Cubs a season ago. Chicago’s 49 players used this season are most in the majors … the Yankees are second with 48 players used in 2013 … thanks to STATS Inc. Traded last month to the Yankees, Alfonso Soriano was the final player remaining from the 2007 Cubs team that won the N.L. Central, while Jeff Samardzija is the only player remaining from the 2008 club that won 97 games … Samardzija is the only player on the roster to have made his Cubs debut prior to 2010 (not including Kevin Gregg, who departed after 2009 and returned in 2013). Only five players on the current 25-man roster were on the 2012 Opening Day roster: Starlin Castro, David DeJesus, Darwin Barney, James Russell and Jeff Samardzija. THIS IS ON THE RECORD: The Cubs have gone 33-34 in their last 67 games starting May 26, but have gone 3-9 in their last 12 contests following a 12-7 stretch from July 6-28. The Cubs have a winning record (38-24) when scoring more than three runs in a game and are 29-9 when reaching five runs … the Cubs are 8-51 when allowing four or more runs. The Cubs have a winning record against teams outside their division this year at 34-33 (.507) while turning in a 17-31 mark against the National League Central, the fourth-lowest winning percentage (.354) by any team against its own division in baseball. I’LL TAKE SOME HALF AND HALF: More than half (52) of Anthony Rizzo’s 103 hits this season have gone for extra bases, and his 52 extra-base knocks are tied for third in the N.L. behind only Cincinnati’s Jay Bruce (57) and Colorado’s Carlos Gonzalez (55). A COMPARISON THROUGH 115: The Cubs have a 51-64 record through 115 games this season … their record through 115 games this year is a six-win improvement on the 45-70 record the club had through 115 games last year (46-70 through 116 games) … this season, the Cubs have a -35 run differential through 115 games compared to a -94 differential through 115 games in 2012.
