NOTES FOR IN TEXT CITATIONS

Text citations may include a comment (Pond 2009; t-tests are used here) Text citations in relation to surrounding text and punctuation Literature has examined one (Pond 2011; Matt 1995) and two (Song 2001). Amy et al. (2005) and Rory (1991) concur. Alternately, Pond (2011) suggests three. Pondʼs (2011) chapter. Text citations in relation to direct quotes Pond argues, “It was” (2011, 9). or As Rory (2009, 1) argues, “It wasnʼt.” Block quotes Melodrama is the dominant mode of … moving pictures. (Williams 1998, 42) Several references to a single source Amy says, “tea, milk, ice,” and sometimes “hot chai.” He “feels guilt” (Pond 2011, 9). She wants “colours like blue” (Pond 2011, 4), plus white (9). She forgot milk (11). Square brackets can be used within parentheses Things change (see, e.g., Pond [2011, 9] on how time works). An author-date citation corresponds to a cited work; it does not refer to a person Pondʼs (1999) study found something. For multiple in text references, the order in which they are listed is up to you (e.g. alphabetical, chronological, by importance of item cited) Where multiple works by a single author are cited in text by date only, use commas (García 1990, 2011; Wong 1999, 328; 2000, 475)
