Chevron’s Gorgon Project in Western Australia is one of the world’s largest natural gas projects which include the construction of a 15.6 million ton per annum liquefied natural gas plant on Barrow Island and a domestic gas plant.

This project is the single largest investment of its kind in the world and involves hundreds of contractors working 24/7 in a varied and high risk environment. Safety and environmental considerations lie at the core of their global business, and Chevron has had to drive through huge cultural change amongst its varied workforce and contractors.

The Challenge

Chevron’s ideal solution needed not just to satisfy their own standards but also those of the joint venture partners, contractors and the regulators. Standardized reporting and investigation throughout the Gorgon Project and enablement of partners and subcontractors to readily monitor the management of events as they occur were therefore key areas of consideration. Other determining factors were the ability to provide the intelligence to adequately develop mitigating strategies and an interface that is suitable for use by different types of users with different levels of IT literacy in remote geographic locations.

Rivo is managing a varied set of requirements for the project. It functions as a quarantine management system that plays a crucial part in the organization of the sensitive environmental site.

Health & Safety KPI metrics enable Chevron to pull through key data and combine them with corporate metrics to show real time performance. Lessons learned are captured in Rivo and these findings are then embedded into practices and projects. Finally Rivo is used to establish a permit to work register providing an overview of all permits to work and related certificates, controlling permit statuses and validity periods.
