Here at Living magazine we are always keen to hear about what is happening in the local community. Please feel free to tell us about events, places of interest, local personalities or celebrities past and present, or indeed anything of interest. Send them to the address below and you could see your article in print.

Welcome… to the all new Chester Living Magazine. The reaction that we received to the new format that we introduced in the April editions of the region’s most popular series of community lifestyle magazines was nothing short of amazing! And the overwhelming consensus when asked if you preferred the new format was a resounding “Yes”. A considerable number of respondees also suggested that we merge the two Chester magazines to provide a single edition that covered lifestyle and community issues across the whole of North Chester.

And that is exactly what we have done with our May issue which is being distributed free of charge to more than 11,000 households across Huntingdon, Boughton, Great Boughton, Vicars Cross, Upton and Hoole. In addition to a number of new editorial features being introduced this month, we are delighted to welcome the Grosvenor Garden Centre as our main contributor to our Green Fingers section of the magazine. Having recently been appointed for a record eighth consecutive year as a Garden Centre of Excellence by the Garden Centre Association, who better to advise readers on all things gardening. Ultimately, this is your magazine and we want to provide you with content that you find both informative and interesting… and, as we have already demonstrated, we are happy to be influenced by you… our loyal readers. Mortgages are costing more and the products available are fewer. Our choice of savings and pensions investments, and insurance, has become more critical than before. So whereas the nervy would say ‘do nothing’, in fact now is the time to ensure that our finances are working well for us. We should look to maximise our investments and to achieve the best possible mortgage rates. Yes, the need is now greater, not less...

Where should you turn? If you were

wanting a particular manufacture of car, you would go to one of its franchisees. That’s fine, if you know which manufacturer you want. Similarly, if you know which bank or building society you want, you can go to one of its branches. But what if you don’t know which bank or building society? After all, there are thousands of every type of product out there. How will you choose? Who will advise you professionally? And most important of all – whom will you trust?

Independent financial advisers are qualified to guide you. And, just as with a solicitor, the adviser is ‘on your side’ and works for you. Their product advice is not limited to one financial institution. Instead, they have the complete portfolio of products available to them. This information is invaluable, for example when tackling the current challenge of fixed rate mortgage deals coming to their end. Remortgaging will likely provide you with the best possible deal, and the adviser knows how and where to find it. And what’s more, they will likely recover their costs through commission from the lender!

For decisions that really matter we seek advice from people we trust – what car to buy, which house to go for, and so forth. How essential, therefore, to have trust in the one to advise you on your biggest expenditure – your mortgage, or

on your largest investments! Advice isn’t just about products. Websites can sell you products, but cannot advise you on your financial future. And advising isn’t just about brokering either. Your adviser should be someone who is passionate about providing the best advice and making the best financial arrangements. Someone who is not bound by office hours. You should sense that they are there to advise you. And products should only be recommended as natural follow-up to the advice given.

An adviser you can trust will be recommendable by others and will have your interests at heart. Spending time with the adviser is therefore necessary to build up that trust. The adviser is likely someone with whom you quickly feel comfortable, someone with whom you feel relaxed to share information about yourself and with whom you find common ground. Someone with whom you want to work, for the long term. Someone you can trust...

Tips for a splendidsummer garden

garden

With a warm, wet British summer in store, here

are a few ideas that the green ngered should bear in mind this summer.

Must have plantsYou will want plenty of colours in your garden during summer so choose from Iris, Osteospernums, Lavender, Dianthus and Dicentra for a fresh and magnicent display.

White owered plants are set to be mas-sive this year so break up the colour with fabulous Arum Lilies, Zantedeschia and Agapanthus.

Cottage garden plants are still very popular and provide vibrant colour throughout the summer, choose from hardy British grown Lupins, Hollyhocks and Foxgloves.

Grow your ownYou can grow a whole host of fruit and vegetables in even the smallest space. If you aren’t lucky enough to have a vegeta-ble plot, why not try tumbling tomatoes in hanging baskets or a strawberry planter for delicious fruit this summer?

Fresh herbs are perfect for summer salads and barbecue marinades. Whether they are in a vegetable plot, window box or in pots on the patio they are easy to grow. Choose your favourite herbs for cooking as regular picking will encourage growth.

Second showingsMake sure you continue dead-heading perennials. Not only will your owers look more attractive due to the removal of ugly oral remains, it will also encourage them to bloom for a second time.

Weed it outMost of your garden will now be planted so it’s now really about maintaining the beauti-ful area you have created. Don’t put o until tomorrow what you can do today. As soon as you see those weeds peeping through get them out. It’s much easier to pull them out whilst their roots are still shallow.

Love thy lawnBy now, you will probably be back mowing your lawn weekly, as longer grass removes

more nutrients from the soil, depriving other areas of your garden. Regular cutting will prevent the lawn looking deprived and avoid unsightly yellow patches. Now that the days and the nights are getting warmer, May is also the perfect time to apply weed killer to your lawn, to ght against those dai-sies and buttercups.

Should we be blessed with hot, dry weather this summer, ensure that the blades on your mower have been raised. This will help you maintain a lovely green lawn. Remember, water well and mow regularly too.

Enjoy making the most of your garden this summer!

If you are happy in your house, but feel it lacks space or the layout needs changing, the rst thing to do is decide which areas of the property you would like to extend and improve.

Before you go ahead with any plans, it’s essential to make sure the work is done by a reputable FMB builder with the correct planning permission and building regulations approvals. Otherwise, when the time comes to move house, you may nd yourself with a few problems.

“Once you are comfortable with your ideas, make a list of your priorities, get a scheme drawn up and then seek planning permission. Once you have approval, you can choose a builder, prepare detailed paperwork and get on with the job - the key then is not to change your mind!”, says Roy Ilott from the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

There are two ways of adding extra living space to your house:

are a great way to create extra room without altering the external appearance of your home. Costing between £15,000 and £35,000, they can add about 15% to the value of your house. Most homes built before 1975 are suitable for a loft conversion, which adds another room or two in the attic space. The work takes about 12 weeks and the builders access the roof from the outside, which means there shouldn’t be too much disruption until they break through to build the new stairs.

can create good practical space such as a bigger kitchen or dining room. Costing between £30,000 and £50,000, one-storey extensions are more common, but a two-storey extension can create another bedroom or bathroom without going

into the loft. Again, the builders work from the outside until the existing wall is knocked through.

Wiggins Builders are experienced in all areas, from loft conversions to large extensions. We can provide help for every step of the way, from getting the plans drawn up, to nishing touches such as decorating and tiling.

Please ring 01244 529522 now to have a friendly chat with Jamie and get the home you have always dreamed of brought to life!

Wiggins Builders are fully insured and are members of the FMB.

Spotlight on Chester Rugby ClubCongratulations must go out to all at Chester Rugby Club on a marvellous season,

culminating in victory at Twickenham on Saturday April 12th in the final of the EDF Intermediate Cup with 21 – 18 win over near neighbours Birkenhead Park.

Chester beat the team from a higher division in a tense final where the result was in the balance throughout the 80 minutes! Replacement Simon Love delivered the Knockout blow for Chester, when it seemed park would put their name on the trophy. It’s a fabulous end to a marvellous season for the club, who only the week before, secured promotion back to North One, the league they were relegated from the previous season. Chester dedicated their cup-final victory to team-member Aled Evans, who sadly

passed away recently after a tragic accident at a farm in North Wales where he worked. Our thoughts are with his family and friends and all those at the Rugby Club ,

during this difficult time.

A Super Car Day Out

What a fantastic day out can be had at Cheshire’s Oulton Park race circuit.

The Bank holiday event proved to be a truly eventful day as always. Oulton Park was the venue for the opening national rounds of the British F3 championship. F3 is a stepping stone to the ultimate aim of its drivers to become the Formula 1 world champion. Many of today’s F1 drivers started this way. Past F3 champions have included: Ayrton Senna, Mika Hakkinen, and Rubens Barrichello. Also taking place was the British GT championship race with great cars such as Aston Martins, Ferrari’s, Dodge Vipers, Ascari’s but all of these were beaten by the Italian supercar Lamborghini. The win made history by becoming the rst Lamborghini to win a race in the British GT championship. Track

It has a whopping sixteen cylinders and four turbo chargers which allows the car to reach an unbelievable 252mph, no that’s not a printing error it cruises to 252mph! No wonder you have to have tyres that are specially made by Michelin with a width of over half a metre to carry you to this top speed safely. Remember the once fastest road car, the McLaren F1, just imagine a drag race between the two. If you allowed the McLaren to reach 120mph before letting the Bugatti start the Bugatti would still beat the McLaren to 200mph! NOW THATS FAST.

Although millions of pounds worth of cars are on show you are free to mingle amongst them taking as many pictures as you like without great concern from the team owners. The highlight of the event for us was the absolutely stunning array of supercars on display; everybody’s personal favourite was there whether it be the Lamborghini Gallardo, Ferrari 599, Bentley GT, Aston Martin V8 Vantage, Audi R8 but perhaps even all of these were overshadowed by the exquisitely prestigious Bugatti Veyron 16.4. The helicopters can land on most terrain, from isolated beaches to major busy roads, ensuring that patients can be reached, treated and transported to hospital at the fastest speeds possible.

public membership of the in-house lottery, legacies and from retail shops.

Chairman of the Charity Mr Bob Palmer said: “Wales Air Ambulance has come a very long way since our launch on March 1st 2001, starting then with one helicopter operating 5 days a week, we now have 3 helicopters covering South Wales, North Wales and Mid Wales. We are approaching 8500 missions and can reach any part of Wales within 20 minutes. “This is a massive achievement which would not have been possible without the highly committed sta and volunteers and most importantly support from the people of Wales.

“We are now one, if not, the busiest air ambulance operators in the UK and with continued support from the public we look forward to our next couple of milestones – the 10 thousandth mission and the arrival of the next generation of helicopters.”

With almost three million people living in Wales, the Charity is ‘Appealing for a £’ from each person to help towards reaching its target.

The New Generation helicopter will increase performance and provide the latest airborne facilities, technology and medical care that will go a long way to further improving the Air Ambulance Service’s excellent record of getting patients to hospital quickly and saving lives.

Local Music Scene

culture

Music - irrespective of your tastes or age, it’s essential. Whether you’re a student,

replacing a monotonous bus journey with your favourite album, driving with your friends to the anthem of a newly discovered band, or chilling out to all-time classics; there’s nothing like that indescribable feeling you get when you’re listening to your favourite music. This feeling however, is only ever superseded when you witness the music being played live. To watch the people responsible for the very music you have pumping out of your stereo, perform it live with their blood, sweat and tears is close to perfection. In recent years, what with the explosion of ‘indie’ culture and the decline of manufactured music within the industry, the demand for live performance has gone through the roof.

Of course, pressing play on your iPod is a lot easier that physically getting to a gig, because anyone decent only performs in the large cities, right? Ten years ago maybe; there was a time when you’d have to travel into the centre of Manchester or Liverpool in order to see a credible act perform. But what if I was to say that acts such as Duy, The Kooks, Pigeon Detectives, Magic Numbers and Jack Peñate have all performed within 20 minutes of you in the last 6 months? What’s more, these acts are only a very small percentage of the high-class artists that have appeared on the roster.

So where is this mystery place that’s getting all the gigs? Well in case you didn’t know, Wrexham’s music scene is now at

the epicentre of live new-music in the North West. Spearheaded by the venue Central Station and promoters such as wrexhammusic.co.uk and Don’t Die Just Yet!, Wrexham is rmly upon the map of up-and-coming touring bands.

On top of being a ‘must-do’ for band’s tour schedules, Wrexham is also known for it’s vibrant local music scene; a scene which is now getting national recognition as a breeding ground for up-and-coming bands and artists such as Leaving Isaac’s Shop, Arnie, The Maydays, Polly Mackey, Trader, The Roseville Band and many more.

So next time your in the mood for some credible, live music, forget about travelling miles; you might just be surprised who’s appearing a lot closer to home!

The Message is Getting Through!

Regular readers will by now be aware of my campaign to educate accident victims not to ring claims companies or insurers or to let anyone take their details and sell them to a solicitor who is prepared to pay. By offering

incentives of an extra 10% compensation for road traffic accidents or £250 up front for all other claims we take, Clients are now spreading the word that the first call to make is to Lampkin & Co. This is a conversation I had with a new Client this week that explains this beautifully:

Mr Shaun Tarran, Proprietor of Stamp Cars has allowed me to endorse his fleet of vehicles.

Mark Lampkin: “Thank you for instructing me to do your case. I am sure that other people will already be trying to sell your details to another solicitor”

Client: “Yes the recovery company who collected my motorcycle whilst I went to hospital have already arranged for a solicitor to contact me to do my case”

Mark Lampkin: “Yes that’s because they want to receive a referral fee of a few hundred pounds which will come from your legal costs”

Client: “Also my insurers are trying to force me to use their solicitors”

Mark Lampkin: “Again they are just trying to make a few hundred pounds and using bullying tactics to make a profit out of your case for nothing in return”

Client: “Well I want you to do the case”

Mark Lampkin: “Thank you”

May is traditionally the month of owers and the blue bell has been voted one

of the nation’s top favourites. For me there are few sights more delightful than the haze of gently swaying blue that carpets our woodlands in late spring. There are three common species, the native, the Spanish and a hybrid and (you’ve guessed it) it’s the native variety that is probably the most at risk from environmental damage. The native variety has a drooping stem with bells on one side unlike the Spanish, which tends to be upright with bells all round. It’s best not to pick them (they don’t last long as cut owers anyway) and it is most denitely illegal to uproot them in the countryside. If you are interested in introducing them

KARMA ENDURO Is an event run by Global Enduro, a fund raising organisation dedicated to helping the some of the poorest, humblest people on the planet

to gain something we all take so much for granted - Basic Healthcare, via the Indian charity ADVENTURE ASHRAM.To help raise these funds, in early November we shall be driving one of a fleet of modern replicas of 1955 Morris Oxfords across 2000km of the Palani Mountains in southern India. Tackling severe road conditions with the most basic of equipment and spending nights under

canvas as we pass through the famous tiger reserves, this will be an epic journey.

AH, but charity should begin at home.. AGREED. Which is why they also raise money for THE RAINBOW TRUST This is a UK based charity providing non medical help, support and counselling to the families of terminally ill and recently

deceased children. To bury their own child has to be one of the most unnatural and horrific things any parent could ever have to face so please, help us to help some of those who are enduring pain that we may only imagine.

To help us on our way we need you. To find out how, contact Phil Lightfoot (pictured inset, with his daughter) on 07723 059045 or call into Kinnerton Post Office for a sponsorship form

truly surprising, thanks to a portion being fermented in old barrels, and a portion coming from a vineyard aected by Botrytis (a special type of rot encouraged for making dessert wines). The avour was rich, fruity and crisp, but with a seriously creamy depth. Yum. By contrast the red Bordeaux blend was extremely easy drinking. Soft tannins, integrated fruit, no harsh acidity. Great stu!

We recently had a New Zealand Tasting Night at the shop, so it’s only fair to

share some of the fun with all of you. Our guest speaker was Charlotte Read, the UK rep for Villa Maria Wines. We saw a mixed bag from Esk Valley and Vidal, both based in Hawkes Bay in the North Island, and from the winery that owns them, Villa Maria. George Fistonich MW is the owner and driving force behind all these wineries, and his passion and enthusiasm are what makes all his wines so special. It’s not all Sauvignon Blanc y’know, there’s a whole lot of wine going on...

Our rst sample was one of my favourites. Vidal’s Marlborough-grown Riesling (£7.75) was the perfect aperitif wine with its fresh, crisp, oral and fruit avours, a refreshing balancing acidity, a slight o-dry character, and that trademark honeyed nish. Absolutely delicious. Vidal Wines was

established in 1905 by Anthony Joseph Vidal, who arrived as a 22 year old from Spain in 1888, and spent 12 years learning his trade on his uncle’s vineyard. Georgeous George bought Vidal in 1976.

Villa Maria has won more awards than any other New Zealand winery, and we soon saw why. The Single Vineyard Chardonnay 2005, for example, was stunning. At £15.25 you’d expect it to be of course, but the low-yielding Fletcher vineyard in the Wairau Valley of Marlborough has perfect free-draining gravelly soils, in one of the warmest sub-regions of Marlborough. The wine was gorgeous. On the nose, rich fruits and butter. In the mouth, creamy, slightly nutty, citrus fruits, and a nish that just went on and on.

Finally, Esk Valley was founded in 1933 by Englishman Robert Bird, and bought by George Fistonich in the ‘80’s. We tried their Black Label Chenin Blanc (£9.50), and Merlot/Cabernet/Malbec (£11.00). The Chenin had a richness of character that was Sam Jackson of Scatchards

SHOTWICK CASTLE By Steve Griffiths.

The MOTTE and Bailey castle at Shotwick, later to be blessed with six stone towers, one of which was

reputed to be over five stories tall, was strategically built upon a steep escarpment above the east bank of the River Dee. Hugh “The Fat” Lupus, a prominent henchman figure belonging to Duke William the conquerors inner circle, built the castle immediately after the Hastings bloodbath of 1066. Guarding an ancient ford that led directly into Wales, whereupon English armies would regularly transgress into Wales, the castle played an integral part of the Anglo-welsh wars of the later medieval age.

After his calamitous defeat at the battle of Crogen in 1165 (fought in the Berwyn Mountains, near Chirk against his old adversary, Owain Gwynedd), Henry the second of England, together with his 30,000 strong army, retreated to Shotwick before necessitating a swift

In 1277, Edward the first of England stayed at Shotwick castle before embarking upon his first grand invasion of Wales, a gargantuan expedition that sounded the death knell for welsh independence. Crossing the River Dee into Wales he gave specific orders to build a large castle upon the accommodating marshes at Flint, his first of many. In 1280, King Edward returned to Shotwick to bestow a series of knighthoods upon those who had faithfully served him during the welsh war of 1276-77. Thereafter, the castles importance declined, and by the year 1607 it was officially classed as a ruin. Almost 100 years later, during the autumn of 1256, it was at Shotwick that the earl of Chester, fearing an imminent assault upon his city by insurgent welsh forces led by Llywelyn Ap Gruffydd, sought desperate sanctuary. The speed of his manoeuvre to the Shotwick bolthole was hastened by the news that the nearby castles of Dyserth and Mold were being pulverised into submission by the vigorous actions of the besieging welsh army.

A present day visit to the historic site is still worthwhile and wholly refreshing, and never fails to fuel the imagination of the visitor. Access to the site can only be obtained by entering the village of Saughall. To the immediate right hand side of the greyhound public house there is a lane which leads onto a public footpath alongside “Shotwick park” manor house. At the end of the footpath, there is a turnstile which begins on a permissive path route which leads directly across a small field towards another turnstile. Turn left onto the well-defined pathway where you will indulge in an extremely pleasant and picturesque walk through a small wood. After approx 10 minutes, there is a t junction in the footpath, turn right. You go over a small wooden footbridge, a flight of wooden steps, and then over another small wooden footbridge the castle can then be found upon your left hand side (directly above the stream and small stone footbridge). The walk takes approx 25minutes each way.

When the River Dee became canalized during the 18th century, the site of Shotwick castle was no longer near the river, all that survives at the present day site are a series of distinguishable earthworks, including a prominent motte and surrounding ditch. healthStressed Out

This is the time of year when many of us or our family members are preparing for exams. We

tend to view exams, driving tests, interviews etc. as unavoidably stressful without realising that too much stress can actually limit our ability to perform and seriously damage our health. Under stress we produce a chemical known as cortisol, too much of which can weaken our immune system, promote osteoporosis, increase fat, impair memory and learning and destroy brain cells. Fortunately relaxation helps us produce DHEA which counteracts these eects. DHEA is understood to be anti-diabetic, anti-viral, anti-biotic and even anti-aging! When you consider the downside of stress, what

Prioritize rather than trying to do everythingBe realistic about your abilities and timescalesBe reasonable about what you expect from othersConsider what you watch on T.V.Keeping things in perspective and having a good laugh can work wonders

do YOU choose? Remember that feeling stressed is actually a matter of choice. Stress is simply our reaction to external events. Even experiencing conict or aggression on T.V. will have an impact on our stress levels

Start to recognise how stress aects you personally. Aches and pains, digestive problems, insomnia, skin conditions, irritability and increased use of alcohol and drugs, prescription or otherwise are just some symptoms of stress, hopefully not all at the same time! Take relaxation seriously - it’s NOT doing nothing! It’s being proactive in maintaining your well-being.

If you nd yourself resisting relaxation: making excuses, or denying you’re stressed when you clearly are, you may well benet from the skill of an experienced hypnotherapist. It’s important to work with someone you feel comfortable with, so you may wish to speak to a few before making an appointment.

Finally, a word about our children. Having worked in education for 15 years, it is clear that the battery of tests conducted in schools can lead to even very young children feeling the eects of stress, which can be very wide-ranging. Nightmares, bedwetting, aggression, withdrawal, and avoidance of new situations can all be symptomatic. The way we approach and deal with stress is likely to have a profound eect on them. Try to encourage and maintain a calm home environment. Let them see that dicult situations need not elicit the stress response. Get them to let o steam in the fresh air. Let your children know that their best is good enough, and remember that if they do seem to be suering from stress, friendly, professional help is available for them too.

Upton & Hoole

FOOTBALL CRAZY

Holland 2008 Haarlem

The club covers every age group from six to sixteen and plays a big role in the current Chester and district league as well as the Ellesmere Port league.

Chris Andrews, the current secretary and Neil Morgan the last Chairman brought the club forward to where it currently stands with Neil gaining the club F.A charter standard status. Kevin Stanley, the current Chairman, together with Neil, helped Upton to gain F.A Charter development status. Upton JFC are proud to be the only club in Chester to have this status.

They work closely with the community and are linked to Acresfield Primary school, Upton Heath Primary school, Manley Village Primary school and Upton-by-Chester High School. They are also proud to be linked to Everton FC through a community football program and never turn down any child that wish to play football. Upton JFC strive to make their players better people both on and off the field.

Upton JFC took four squads on their annual tour to Holland this Easter, taking one under 11’s team and three under 14’s. Last year Upton JFC under 13’s came home as winners from a similar tournament, the “Top of Holland” tournament in Assen. This year the venue was Haarlem and the competition was called the “Easter Classic”, although the weather that they encountered made it look more like Christmas. Waterlogged pitches on the Saturday ensured that all of the under 14’s matches were

called off but the under 11’s carried on regardless on artificial pitches.

The under 14’s teams went to the under 11’s venue to cheer them on and luckily found two unused, playable pitches. Several other under 14’s teams from Ireland, Scotland and England also arrived from the cancelled tournament and it didn’t take long before the Upton coaches organized a mini tournament.

The under 11’s meanwhile qualified for the Sunday finals by beating three Dutch teams and drawing against one other, finally coming second in their group. They were the only English team to go through.

On Sunday morning snow covered most of Southern England and it wasn’t long until it hit Holland, just before kick off. The referees decided to continue and both age groups ended up playing in conditions that English referees would not allow in this present climate of Risk Assessments. The under 11’s, having only lost one of their games all weekend, came a credible 5th out of 25 mostly Dutch teams.

The three under 14’s teams came 1st, 3rd and 5th in their mini tournament, which unfortunately did not involve any Dutch teams due to the cancellation the previous day.

All the boys from both age groups thoroughly enjoyed their long weekend away and said that they would do it all over again given the chance next year. Behavior was never an issue and, considering the weather, distance of journey and being away from home, they were a credit to the club. Yet again Upton JFC has gone to Holland and like last year, showed our continental friends just how good English football is.

It as always nice to add Silverware to our growing collection, but more importantly is the way in which we do it with outstanding behavior and credibility. Thanks to all the coaches, parents and most importantly, the boys involved.

was formed in 1997 when Upton Villa and Upton United joined forces. They currently play on the fields at the Dale MOD camp, which is regarded as one of the best playing surfaces in Chester, with up to six games being played at any one time.

I have many years experience involving special educationalneeds assessment and remediation. I have two sons who aredyslexic. My youngest son also has Irlen syndrome and auditory processing difficulties. After many frustrating years oftaking him to various centres and trying different colour overlays and Irlen glasses I read about Harris filter lenses whichhelp synchronise the speed of light reaching the eyes and soreduces the problems caused by visual distortions such asscotopic sensitivity or Irlen.

I was so impressed by the rapid improvement in my sons reading skills that I trained as a Harris practitioner and I am theonly person in the North West offering assessments and supplying Harris tinted glasses.

They may find it hardto concentrate when there is any type of background noise orshow hypersensitivity to certain sounds and frequencies whichcan cause great discomfort.
