And when you find that per- son, nominate them, said Adam Henry, son of the late Geauga County Juvenile and Probate Court Judge Charles “Chip” Henry. The Henry family and Friends of CASA for KIDS have teamed up to create a “Chip Henry Civic Award,” in honor of the 19-year juvenile court judge, who was hit by a car and killed while bicycling in May 2011. “This is the first go around. It was proposed by Chris Steigerwald and Sally Terrell. They’re both affiliated with CASA and my dad, being such a big influence on CASA,” said Adam, referring to the Court Appointed Special Advocate program his father started in 1997, which involves someone speaking in the best interest of an abused or neglected child involved in the court. “He, Chris and Sally crossed paths a lot and I thought this would be a great way to do something for the community to remember my dad,” Adam said. Steigerwald and Terrell brought the award idea to Adam and Linda Henry, Chip’s wife, last year, he said. “We sat on the back patio and kind of got the ball rolling last fall and have been develop- ing it ever since,” Adam said. The Henry family and Friends of CASA — which is the nonprofit fundraising arm for CASA for KIDS — are cur- rently seeking nominations for the award, which will be hon- ored to a high school student and an adult, said Steigerwald, a board member for Friends of CASA. “It kind of just goes with the whole mentorship. My dad was real big into mentorship and the power that it has on both the younger individual and the adult,” Adam said. “It’s kind of a two-way street in his mind. He had a younger brother and I think my dad was a positive influence on his life and I think he got a lot out of it, too.” Adam hopes people in the county will nominate several people, ranging in age, so they’re able to pick from a diverse pool. “(We’re looking) for some- thing that’s kind of out of the blue, something you’ve noticed someone doing that was unex- pected, something that is maybe above and beyond, something that strikes you as particularly genuine and something that you appreciate in another person,” he said. “We’re looking for nominations of anybody. He added there are several national trends that have made the economy tip into negative territory, including: • Consumers are saving def- ensively, taking resources out of the economy. • Businesses are investing less. • Businesses are slowing their growth of inventory. • We’ve had a loss of exports to Europe. Any combination of the trends often adds up to zero growth, Mayland said. “What is really wrong with the economy?” he asked, offer- ing four major culprits. • Regulatory overkill, i.e., very, very strict pollution requirements on coal and enegy. • The shut down on energy production such as drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico and the blocking of the Keystone pipeline. • Major changes in health care that create uncertainty and increase in costs for businesses. • The Frank Dodd legislation with thousands of pages of new regulations that could disable small banks. Companies and institutions have to use their resources to comply with the regulations, Mayland said, adding this leaves them with less capital for growth and investment, causing further uncertainty. “It’s really a drag on the economy,” he said. indicators showed the countryhad a 2.2 percent economicgrowth compared to a 3 percentaverage for the last half a century.“Is 2 percent the new nor-

mal? I refuse to accept that,”Mayland said, adding the eco-nomic malaise could be curedby different policies than thosenow in place. The problem is not that

workers are uneducated, un-trained or lazy, he said. Companies are running

leaner and people who havejobs are working more hours, accomplishing more with less.Meanwhile, he estimated

corporations in the U.S. are sit-ting on $1.5 trillion in resourcesincluding financial assets andthey have another $1 trillionother places in the world thatcould come back if the econom-ic situation improves for them.“We just need the right poli-

cies to uncork that potential,”Mayland said. For now, America has cho-

sen to follow the European fis-cal model of big governmentproviding a big social safety netthat keeps annual growth at 2percent, rather than the HongKong model of capitalism, which typically leads to 4 per-cent growth annually, he said. Between now and 2016, as

the Affordable Health Care Actbecomes fully enacted, thecountry is moving toward a sin-gle-payer system, Mayland said.Meanwhile, the HCA puts a

terrific burden on employers.“Companies are learning

how to game the system,”Mayland said. Already, smaller companies

are cutting the number ofemployees to fewer than 50 toavoid the HCA or replacingfull-time workers with part-timeworkers.

If the health care exchangesbuilt into the act fail, the gov-ernment might step in andmake a lot of decisions regard-ing the health care Americansreceive.Regardless, the HCA is

going to have long-term effects.“I think that’s a job killer,”

Mayland said.

Policies Create FiscalDragMayland said the next few

years are going to see policiesthat will create a fiscal drag onthe economy. They include:• Tax increases on the

wealthy.• Paring of the defense

budget.• Persistence of big budget

deficits.• Continuation of zero-inter-

est rates from the FederalReserve.• Continued green-energy

subsidies and carbon-energytaxes.• Effective amnesty for ille-

gal aliens through non-enforce-ment of the laws.Where the government was

providing tax cuts and stimulusfunding, now there are moretaxes and no stimulus funding,Mayland said.“That’s a pretty gloomy

assessment of the economy,” hesaid.

The Plus SideThere is some good news

about the economy, some ofwhich is driven by simple demo-graphics.For instance, housing starts

and light vehicles are both inthe positive column, with 15million cars sold in 2012. The population needs 1.3 to

1.4 million additional livingunits every year to keep up withdemand.

Housing is 2.5 percent of theGDP.“These numbers must rise,”

Mayland said. “The housingrecovery is real. It has legs.”Other likely growth indus-

tries are:• Aerospace driven by Boeing

building about 900 Dream-lin-ers.• Some business appears to

be returning to the U.S. fromChina, where employee wagesand benefits have been rising.• Homegrown energy pro-

duction.Mayland said America has

extensive oil and gas resourcesand the economics of the indus-try are very compelling.“This is where America has a

great future. We could get some-thing close to energy independ-ent in four years,” he said. Whilethe price of gasoline seems to bestuck at a global price, therewould be some serious benefitsto the economy including salesand jobs.“At least we will be paying

ourselves,” he said. “Finally, after so many years, Ohio’s get-ting a break.”Having that resource could

help buffer any disastrous eco-nomic recession, part of whichmay be caused by the FederalReserve’s printing of another $1trillion in the next year. It took almost 100 years to

go from zero to $1 trillion andfrom 2008 until 2013, to go up to$3 trillion in printed money,Mayland said.Creating another trillion dol-

lars in paper money in a yearcould have negative effects, hesaid, noting the EuropeanCentral Bank started printingEuros to keep their banks fromcollapsing and Japan has decidedto devalue the yen and increaseits inflation ratio.“We’re all printing money.

It’s kind of a race to the bot-tom,” Mayland said.

Expert Advice

He didn’t recommend buy-ing gold, however. Rather, investors should put

their cash into real assets, suchas shares in a copper company. Investment in any corpora-

tion that produces a commoditythat is in demand would be thebest bet, Mayland said.To bring the country back to

its healthy economic roots, herecom-mended three simple, but far-reaching steps the gov-ernment should take:• Adopt an all-out policy on

energy development aimed atenergy indepen-dence, includ-ing oil and natural gas, wind, solar and nuclear sources.Exporting natural gas wouldhelp the GDP, jobs and the taxbase.• Totally streamline regula-

tions by getting rid of problem-creating acts like Frank-Doddand Sarbane-Oxley that chewup tax dollars to no benefit.• Establish a flat tax with

minimal deductions, which, at20 percent, would raise moremoney than the governmentreceives now, and eliminate thecorporate income tax on divi-dends and capital gains.“If you do those three

things, it would unleash a floodof economic develop-ment,”Mayland said, adding there isalmost no chance the govern-ment will consider any of thoseactions. The slide show containing

tions” so they’re able to pick ayoung adult and an older adult, but said any nominations arewelcome.“I’m sure there’s a ton of

great people out there,” he said.Since the award is in its

infancy, Adam said he’s unsurehow far it will go.“We have an idea that these

(two) people will be friends andwork together ... sponsor projectsin the future,” he said. “I kind ofthink of it as a pay it forward. Ananti-police blotter. You’ll see acouple of examples of peopledoing something good and keep-ing that going from there.”Terrell, a board member of

Friends of CASA as well as aCASA volunteer, said the awardis to “commemorate people whoare of like mind of Judge Henryand care about going beyondthemselves and doing what theycan to improve the community aswell as to foster good character.”

She echoed Adam in thehopes the two recipients willforge a bond and facilitate morepositive change.“Chip Henry, as an adult, I

think reached out to youth tohelp them and be a role modeland I think that we can also findrole models in the younger gen-eration as well, so I think theycan work together to ... encour-age their peers,” Terrell said.“Judge Henry always used tosay, ‘I understand youth who arein trouble and are tempted bythings that will get them intotrouble because I used to beone.’ So there was that under-standing there. We can learnfrom our mistakes and we canalso learn from people who dogood things.” Character-building relation-

ships and selfless service to oth-ers are also things to considerwhen making a nomination,Steigerwald said.“A positive role model as

public servant, husband, father, and friend, Chip Henry was aman of character and integrity

who positively influenced oth-ers by taking an active role intheir lives,” she said, addingChip was a Returned PeaceCorps Volunteer, a big brotherin the Big Brother/Big Sisterprogram, volunteered withGeauga Home Delivered Meals, coached youth and served wher-ever he could help those inneed, whether it was a seniorcitizen needing windows washedor a troubled teen searching foradvice.“The community of Geauga

County was, in essence, Chip’sextended family and he madeevery effort to share his love forpeople and nature in very posi-tive and memorable ways,”Steigerwald said.

Nominations are by applica-tion only and must be submittedby March 1.

John Paul II in Rome shortlybefore his death and had beensaddened to see how frail and

incapacitated he had become. Svoboda said he gave her a

rosary from his own hands, butwas unable to speak and had tobe wheeled from person to per-son.She added she believes

Benedict made his decisionafter much prayer, which showsthat, although tradition is amajor tenet of the CatholicChurch, it also must function ina changing world.“I hope the next pope is,

first, a prayerful person wholoves God, who has a sense oftradition, but is also open to theworld, because God is alive andwell in our world,” she said.Svoboda added all Catholics

The West Geauga swimmersand divers teamed up inCleveland Heights for two wor-thy causes during the last dualmeet of the season for bothteams on Feb 1. honoring theseniors and helping to raisemoney for breast cancerresearch. The evening resulted in a

gift of $1,600 to the NationalBreast Cancer Alliance. The evening — dubbed

“Pink in the Pool” — waspoignant from both perspec-tives.Preceding the meet, a

memorial ceremony featuredfloating luminaries that signi-fied friends and relatives whohave fought or are fightingagainst breast cancer, followedby a moment of silence. Then, each team honored its

seniors on the final dual meet oftheir high school careers. The Wolverines saluted eight

senior swimmers: captains JoshEgan, Bob Humanchuk, JuliaPetrac and Libby Watson, alongwith teammates ChandlerHeppert, Ryan Lucas, GabrielNock and Michael Wenrich. A ninth senior, Jeffrey

Cizek, was ill and couldn’t be atthe meet. The season is not quite over,

however, as many of these sen-iors will be integral to theteam’s success in the statechampionship tournament, which runs from the SectionalChampionship on Feb. 9through the State Champion-ship Meet, closing on Feb. 23.Once in the water, West

Geauga came away with teamvictories in both the girls andboys competitions. The Wolverine boys won all

but one event on the way to a108-73 victory, with seniors par-ticipating in seven of the 11first-place finishes. Two members of the next

generation stepped up in a bigway. Sophomore Ryan Gleske

had a perfect night to claim topscoring honors for the boys ashe won both the individual 100-yard freestyle and 100-yardbackstroke races, and swam aleg of the winning 200-yardmedley and 400-yard freestylerelays. Freshman Tucker Harvey

scored his first individual win ofthe season, finishing first in the200-yard individual medley. The West Geauga girls won

a portion of the meet 113-71,taking first place in all but threeof the events as two girlsmatched Gleske’s performancewith perfect nights. Junior Natalie Poremba won

the individual 50-yard freestyleand 100-yard backstroke, andswam a leg of the first-place200-yard medley relay and the200-yard freestyle relay. Sophomore Kirstin Boni

took first-place honors in the200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke, and swam in

the winning 200- and 400-yardfreestyle relays. The girls also had a fresh-

man with her first high schoolvictory, as Kelly Karban wonthe arduous 500-yard freestylerace.
