Agencies with the most innovative and impactful project ideas were chosen to receive grants to build their projects. CHESTERFIELD, VA – Chester-field County Parks and Recrea-tion has been selected to re-ceive a $30,000 play space grant from the National Recrea-tion and Park Association (NRPA) and The Walt Disney Company. This investment sup-ports NRPA and Disney’s com-bined goal of providing one mil-lion kids and families with great-er access to play. Part of the national Meet Me at the Park Play Spaces grant pro-gram, park and recreation agen-cies across the country were invited to share their best ideas for increasing access to play spaces for children and families in their communities. 2019 NATIONAL NIGHT OUT IN CHESTERFIELD

Great National Night Out events at Stonebridge Recre-ation Center, Bensley Park and Ettrick Park. Thanks to all who participated and con-tributed to these successful events.

National Night Out is an an-nual community-building campaign that promotes po-lice-community partnerships and neighborhood camara-derie to make our neighbor-hoods safer, more car-ing places to live. Na-tional Night Out en-hances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it pro-vides a great opportuni-ty to bring police and neighbors together un-der positive circum-stances.

Therapeutic Recreation camps

Adventure Quest Camp be-gan this week. This adven-ture camp is for teens with disabilities. Campers have completed wilderness sur-vival at Pocahontas State Park, rock climbing at Peak Experiences, been white water rafting with Beyond Boundaries and RVA Paddle Sports, completed the Ches-terfield Challenge Course, and kayaking at Dutch Gap Conservation Area. Summer Hang Time at Bensley Recreation Center

Campers with Summer Hang Time went on two field trips last week. They enjoyed the Richmond Fly-ing Squirrels game and paddling on the lagoon at the Dutch Gap Conserva-tion Area.

FUN DAY at River City Sportsplex

SUMMER CAMPS

Summer Sports camps came to end on Friday, Aug. 2 at River City Sportsplex. The sports camps were held throughout the summer at three middle schools: Salem, Swift Creek and Elizabeth Davis. The campers were ex-posed to different sports and played modified sporting games each week. All camp-ers were invited to an end of summer celebration, FUN DAY. Over 50 kids attended despite the rainy start. How-ever, the rain ended, and the day turned into a true Friday FUN DAY. FC Richmond and the Richmond Kickers came out along with mascots Kickerroo and Nutzy. Parks and Recreation Director Dr. James Worsley, Assistant Di-rector of Recreation Bob Smet and Athletics Manager Bill Carlson visited. Campers were treated to pizza then ended the day with water balloon games. Coach Incy Teoh from the Richmond Kickers provided skills train-ing for the participants.

Archaeology Camp

This week at Historic Trinity Church, the Archaeology Summer Camp was held. Chil-dren have learned how to establish grids, conduct shov-el test pits, how to properly excavate a site, how to properly determine layers of soil and understand the im-portance of interpreting the artifacts in relation to similar items. They have learned how important climate change can impact past cul-tures, how to properly clean artifacts, interpret their meanings and how to cata-logue material evidence. 13 attended the camp.

A Craft in Time

The County Museum recently offered A Craft in Time. Each Wednesday in July a different old-fashioned craft activity was enjoyed by museum visi-tors. Over 50 visitors created craft items such as wool sheep, cattail ducks, yarn dolls and pressed-plant pic-tures.

James River Camp took place August 6-8. Campers explored the past, present, and future of the James River through a variety of activities. Wednesday included a kayaking trip to identify the plants and animals of the river.

Acrylics Painting Class at Huguenot Road Baptist Church

Acrylics Painting class was held on August 5. Instructor Linda Ru-bin taught a new fun way to paint by tearing paper and creating mosaic-type pictures. The 12 par-ticipants enjoyed learning this new technique and went home with colorful and vibrant pieces.

FAIRGROUNDS MASTER PLAN PROCESS AT PRAC MEETING

A Fairgrounds Park Master Plan public meeting was held on Au-gust 1. Over 25 citizens and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board attended. The meeting was held in the Community De-velopment Building located with-in Chesterfield County Govern-ment Center. The proposed mas-ter plan will determine the high-est and best use of this 77.8-acre events park. Staff explained the planning process which includes Parks and Recreation staff and a Technical Advisory Committee. Site conditions were mentioned to introduce park’s natural fea-tures and existing assets. Connec-tivity to the Government Center and the County’s Bikeways and Trail Plan was integrated into the presentation. The concept plan includes: -welcome and events facility with offices -events area -equestrian and dog events area -campground -maintenance and parking -community recreation -neighborhood pocket park -additional parking and farmers market Next steps include developing the final master plan, evaluating the economic sustainability of proposed uses followed by cost estimates and phasing plan im-plementation and funding. The National Association of County Information Officers presented their Awards of Excellence in July.

There were 235 entries from 30 locales.

The Eppington 250th Anniversary Celebration won the Superior Award (highest) in the category for

Special Projects/Ceremonies or Community Events.
