Welcome to the first edition of our Apprenticeship Directory. We have produced this in conjunction with employers to showcase the fantastic range of apprenticeship opportunities available within the region.

Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to gain hands-on experience, a salary and the opportunity to train whilst you work. All of this with some of the area’s most prestigious companies in a variety of different industries.

Our ambition is to help others fulfil theirs.

The Skills & Growth Company is grateful for the support of The North West Apprenticeship Ambassador Network in producing this directory; a network of employers that are passionate about apprenticeships and want to promote apprenticeships to bridge the skills gap. The network engages in a range of activities and events that promote and demonstrate how apprenticeships enable progression opportunities to both apprentices and employers.

What’s an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a genuine job and under all circumstances you should be employed from day one. Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with study.

As an apprentice, you’ll:

• work alongside experienced staff• gain job-specific skills• earn a wage and get holiday pay• be given time for study related to your role

(the equivalent of one day a week)

What’s in it for me?• Earn a real wage;• Be trained in the skills employers want;• Set yourself up for the future – apprentices

enjoy marked salary increases when they complete their training, and those completing a higher apprenticeship could see increased earnings of an estimated £150,000 over their lifetime.*

A Guide to Apprenticeships

Entry requirements

Apprenticeships are available to anyone over the age of 16, living in England. The National Apprenticeship Service is committed to ensuring that high quality apprenticeships are a prestigious option, accessible to all people from all backgrounds. All vacancies on the Find an Apprenticeship website will clearly state what the entry requirements are for the job role being advertised.

There will be different entry requirements depending on the industry, job role and apprenticeship level. Recent changes to the minimum English and maths requirements now mean that people with a learning difficulty or disability can now access a level 2 intermediate apprenticeship as long as they can achieve an entry level 3 qualification during their apprenticeship.

How do I apply?

At any one time on the Find an Apprenticeship website, in a variety of careers and industries across England, there are between 12,000 - 20,000 apprenticeship vacancies online.

Visit GOV.UK and search ‘apprenticeships’. You can search by keyword (job role, occupation type or apprenticeship level) and by location. In addition, some employers advertise vacancies on their website. Once the right job comes up, you can simply register on the website and follow the step by step instructions to apply for the role.

Changing Education was created out of the passion to make a change in the way that young people were supported, from learning at school to eventually taking the steps to employment.

Our goal is to complement a school’s national curriculum and student support programmes with high quality, effective work experience solutions that achieve the best outcomes for students.

Changing Education is an expert provider of the full solution to work experience, including CONNECT, the optimum software in work experience management. Established in 2008 by education professionals, everyone in the team comes from an educational background and has a thorough knowledge base of Careers Advice and Guidance, Traineeship Programmes, Risk Assessments and Health and Safety.

Our work is broken down into three unique provisions:

• Work Experience (WEX): This is the conventional week blocks of work experience everyone will remember from school;

• Extended Work Placements (EWP): These placements are aimed at students struggling to engage in curriculum who may or may not have Special Educational Needs (SEN). They are usually for 1-2 days per week and are aimed at re-engaging students in the curriculum;

• T-Level Placements: These industry placements are 45-60 day placements for level 2 and 3 BTEC students in college which must be specific to each

student’s course of study. T-levels are the new vocational qualifications being introduced from September 2019 onwards.

Flat Cap Hotels is a Cheshire based family run group. We are operators of independent hotels with restaurants specialising in delivering locally sourced British seasonal menus, eccentric cocktails, the finest beers and exceptional wines. Each property provides interiors designed with our own personal touches with ‘home away from home’ accommodation:

The Vicarage in Holmes Chapel is a refurbished 17th Century Grade II listed country pub, restaurant and hotel in the heart of Cheshire. The first of big things to come from the umbrella brand Flat Cap Hotels, a family run group with local roots. You can expect quirky décor matched with country comforts, championing local British seasonal produce and eco-sustainability.

The Courthouse is one of the most iconic buildings in South Cheshire located in the centre of Knutsford. The magnificent building has been refurbished to emulate the building’s history and grandeur-style. It is now home to Barristers Restaurant and The Court Room, a magnificent wedding and events space.

In the very heart of rural Cheshire lies the picturesque and unspoilt village of Prestbury of which The Bridge is the keystone. A grade II listed country pub, restaurant and hotel, it connects quirky decor matched with country comforts. Since 1952, The Bridge in Prestbury has boasted luxurious accommodation, fine food, morning coffee, afternoon tea, private dining facilities, and a welcoming bar and restaurant.

Flat Cap Hotels will be creating and launching its Flat Cap Hospitality Academy within the coming months, during a period of exciting growth. The main objective of creating a training academy is to allow us to employ many career orientated employees.

The positions will be based at our headquarters in Congleton, and our outstanding apprenticeship programme offers apprentices the chance to gain a thorough insight into a successful business, spending time working within each of the company’s departments and working with professionals including Land Buyers, Project Managers, Lawyers, Accountants and Planners. After an 18-month rotation period, the successful apprentices will then work with a mentor to select a career path based on their skills and passion. We often sponsor employees on part time courses at University to help them meet their long-term career ambitions.

For the past 6 years we have run a very successful graduate training programme and annually recruit at least 10 candidates into this scheme. We recognise however that by only recruiting graduates we are missing other talented young people who for many

Hirsch Tailoring was established in 2014, combining a keen eye for style and using only the most meticulous techniques, we offer the highest standard in bespoke tailoring. We blend true British heritage materials in one-of-a-kind, entirely bespoke garments for our customers.

Our founder Brita Hirsch is a master tailor and textile engineer with 30 years’ experience in the sector, who developed her craftsmanship to the highest level during a three-year apprenticeship in Germany. Now based in Macclesfield, the company’s client base is international.

Macclesfield Silk has, for more than 100 years, been the material of choice for the finest ties, pocket squares and handkerchiefs. Today, two mills in town still weave, print and very successfully trade with the famous cloth. Whenever suitable and desired, we use this beautiful and durable fabric to line our handmade jackets and coats.

Our business is award winning, and has recently secured the Textile Society annual ‘Professional Development Award’.

We are keen to promote apprenticeships and the excellent opportunities aligned to textile skills, which is our passion.

We believe that there is a real craft renaissance underway: young people up and down the country want to learn to make things the proper way again – by hand. A solid set of craft skills makes for an excellent foundation to build a future on, and in

response to this demand for training in the sector, we founded The Tailoring Academy in 2018.

The academy delivers the Level 5 Diploma as a stand-alone qualification to those who come with previous experience, typically a degree in fashion or costume design. The school shares premises with our bespoke workshop, which means trainees learn the craft in a real work environment.
