going places May is our senior issue, tipping a hat to all those graduating on to new and exciting endeavors. That includes a substanial and growing population here on the shore. Many of our area Colleges and Universities are expanding their campuses, adding buildings, staff and new curriculum. The economics of higher education bode well for our area, this is clean, positive industy, offering skilled, well paying jobs to a diverse, educated and professional demographic. The students arrive ready to explore, and enjoy the region, further supporting our local economy. On the other end of the spectrum, seniors , 50+, are drawn here to retire not just for the lovely lifestyle and amenities, but to partake in the culture and community events based at these institutes of higher learning. Education is an opportunity to live more fully. The end of life as a student or a long career, opens out on a wide vista of possibilities for exploration. While the article; senior opportunities starts on page 60, is geared to those 50+, its content, working to maintain a vital mind and physically fit body, applies to all of us. Betty Powell, “our above & beyond” story, is a senior’s senior, chasing down 3 college degrees after age 60! Just pretend that as summer looms ahead, you too may take some time to further yourself. It might be something as simple as reading into a subject more deeply, taking a short class in something new or volunteering your time in an area that has always interested you. Try not to let summer get away from you this year... stop and listen to the birds, slow time down and remember........... this time belongs to you. Happy trails- Dana Simson

1- What are we/the children getting out of this activity? If you or the children are rushed and complain about going each week this could be a sign to reevaluate the purpose of this activity.2- How does this activity enhance my child’s/our life? Just because the neighbor’s child or classmates are participating in an activity doesn’t mean you have to. The activity may not match your child’s needs or desires.3- Does this activity just fill a time slot? You don’t have to schedule every extra open time slot. Don’t be afraid of taking that time to un-wind. Your child will thank you and your stress level will thank you.So where do we find that time for family fun? You make it! It is as important as a business meeting, lunch date, or going to the doctors.Try some of these family fun time tips.

Setting at least one night a week aside for family fun night. Sit down with everyone and pick the night and time. Have fun with it, start at

dinner. Everyone makes a part of the meal. Switch the activities up by the week. The first week is board games, the second week is bingo, the third is a movie,

and the fourth could be a family book club night.Once a month pick a field trip for everyone. Pick up your local paper, search the

web, or visit the county’s travel center. Often these places have great suggestions, untraveled parks, and loads of free events.

Think about a weekly family activity. Some families like to swim together, workout together, volunteer together, or take a class together.

You just may find out that when your time is spent more meaningfully, stress levels often drop, communication is improved and a stronger family bond is gained.

Is your family life CRAZY-BUSY?? Take this quick quiz....

School will soon be out and the summer will be here. In the age of over scheduling squeezing in time to unwind and slow the pace down to hear your children is a true gift. Take care to cultivate tender, teachable, and thought-ful moments that are irreplaceable and lost in a flash.Consider how to spend your valuable time. Ask the following questions;

t h e g a r d e n w a r r i o r * Words from someone who

routinely bites off more than they can chew, has no time for it and

must have a garden no matter what.

When I lived in New York City I grew basil and other herbs in a battalion of pots jammed into every inch of our

small fire escape. Luckily our apartment building

never caught fire. My first car, a 1962 Volvo 122s,

only slightly younger than me at the time, always had some small plant

growing in it’s ashtray.Out at Secrethouse, in what was a

field of weeds, in front of what was an empty and unhappy house is now nearly a half acre of brickwalks, fruit trees, bulb gardens and other garden

patches for what ever I throw in there.

H e r e i s h o w I g a r d e n :1) I get overly excited and wildly optimistic.2) On the first sunny day, I begin a frenzy of digging and planting of last years excess seeds- and then more new varieties as I cannot help myself, when I see an intriguing seed packet.3) I never turn down a friend offering me their extra seedlings and left over plants when they have sense enough to limit the size of their gardens.4) Lastly, once everything is in (and I do attempt to mulch and deter weeds with all sorts of creative methods,) I get dis-tracted with everything else that is going on until one day on average a month and a half later when my husbands says, ” Your garden is a jungle!” This sequence of events unwinds just like clockwork, like the Shad returning to the Nanticoke River to spawn, or the enthusiastic dog leaping through the brand-new screen on our front door.Problem- The pond plants have won; the pond (and the fish) are backed into a corner.Solution-Extreme garden warrior tactic- divide and conquer.Weapons: Curved garden rake, 4 cups of coffee,an irrerverence for being covered in pond scum and a hack saw.

t h e g a r d e n w a r r i o r *Years ago, my dear friend Kathy Day gave me a pond plant and some goldfish. This was like giving a vat of stout to a beerhound. One sip and you must have it around. A fish pond is a meditative treat. It is like being the creator and czar of an entire small kingdom that you may watch over and admire. It is easy to create a pond, in fact even an oversized garden pot can work- add water (let it stand for a week before adding fish, water plants in the method that will follow) and fish-( rescue 10 for a dollar; from the pet section of some big box store- look for feeder.fish, actually tiny goldfish. But I digress.

My pond was a tangle. The original potted pondplants, had burst

forth under water and matted their roots together in an extraordinarily heavy floating

island. There was no way a mere human could ever drag any of it out. Using my curved garden rake I hooked the mass

and rocked it up and down, pulling the roots out of the bottom muck. Then I heaved to and fro working this heap of plants, muck and things that had fallen

into the pond and disappeared within reach of pondside. (This is excellent cardio, but not for the faint hearted.)

Now the stroke of genius- as my husband was not on site to recoil in horror, I drew my hack saw and attacked, separating the glump into heavable clumps.

Voila, 3 short rounds in the ring later, I wrestled that mass onto the patio. The pond and I exhaled a victory sigh.

Could this thing be useful?Only the rotted and old growth portion of the pile should be composted-( Which in fact is lovely top-notch material!) The matted pile of pond plants is .... Christmas for friends! Here is how to wrap up the gloop & present each one: Breathe demurely, then gently pull apart or hacksaw if necessary the untidy clumps into pot-sized portions.

Important garden warrior notion:

Cut some old window screen into a square large enough to cover and wrap up the sides of a garden pot. Push it in and place a half brick or some rocks in the bottom. This is a super way to re-use the piles of plastic pots you just can’t throw out, lurking in the garage.

Page 47: Chesapeake East Calendar Guide - May

Fill around this with pea gravel. Next cut any dead bits off the pond plant and tuck it in place, covering the roots and up the sides with soil. Lastly, cover the surface of the pot around the plant with more pea gravel. Put a ribbon on it and pass it on! This way all the ponds or ditches or low spots in one’s yard can bloom with Hyacinth or yellow iris. Place any you keep in your pond so the water just covers the gravel and top of the pot. Oh, and one final note; next time don’t let that pond get so out of hand.-Right.... and someday we’ll buy wall to wall white carpeting for our mudroom. Garden Warrior RewardPresents for friendsUseful session of cardio & stretchingLovely, happy pond.

In the last few decades, ornithologists have discovered that the spring migration of shorebirds coincides with the arrival of the horseshoe crabs in Delaware Bay. Recent bird counts of migratory shorebirds have shown alarming decreases in numbers. Like the link between shorebird migration and horseshoe crab spawning times, many think there is a corresponding link between shorebird population declines and horseshoe crab over-harvesting. Surveys have shown that the Delaware Bay is the 2nd largest stopover location in the Western Hemisphere for northward bound shorebirds (only Copper River Delta on the Alaskan coast hosts more birds). Estimates of anywhere from 300,000 to more than a million shorebirds stop at the Delaware Bay each year on their way north. What makes the Delaware Bay so attractive to the shorebirds is the eggs of the largest concentration of spawning horseshoe crabs along the Atlantic coast. The eggs of horseshoe crabs are buried in nests at a depth of 15-20cm and are inac-cessible to most shorebirds. However with the high concentration of horseshoe crabs that occur along the Delaware Bay, previ-ously laid nests are dug up in the process of laying new nests. The eggs from these disturbed nests accumulate on the surface and provide most of the eggs that the shorebirds feed on. Without a high concentration of horseshoe crabs, the abundant food source would essentially vanish.....................horseshoecrab.org

what.da.yano? Horseshoe crabs are among the world’s oldest and most fascinating creatures. The earliest horseshoe crab species were crawling around the Earth’s shallow coastal

seas for at least 100 million years before the dinosaurs even arrived (which was about 200 million years ago). Since that time, the Earth’s land masses have shifted dramatically, thousands of other species have come and gone, but horseshoe crabs have survived and today remain much as they were those millions of years ago. The females are much larger than the males which have indentations on the underside of their helmet-like shell which enables them to hold onto the female with their special claws pedipalps (the specially modified sec-ond set of clawed appendages which females do not have) while spawning. The blood of the horseshoe crab is valued as it provides a gram negative base for testing of pharmaceutical drugs. Their shells are used in making sutures and wound dressings for burn patients.

Learn more; New management practices for the horseshoe crab fishery to combat over harvesting will also help restore migratory shorebird populations. One more example of how we are all linked together on our planet earth. www.ceoe.udel.edu/horseshoecrab Assist: Some horseshoe crabs are tagged to see what their travel patterns are like. When a person finds one that is tagged they can call the phone number on the tag and report the number. A certificate will be sent to them with the original tagging location to see how far that crab has trav-eled- plus you recieve a free horseshoe crab pin! (cool!)Robin Coventry of Dover, Delaware.... found one last year which was originally tagged on the New Jersey side of the Delaware Bay. Families often take nature walks along the shore flipping stranded horseshoe crabs off their backs. They look a little intimidating with their spear-like tail but they are gentle creatures.

FIND the DuPont Nature Center at the Mispillion Harbor Reserve, located on a 1.7 acre property at the mouth of the Mispillion River on the Delaware Bay. This harbor represents one of the most important horseshoe crab spawning beaches and shorebird feeding areas in the world. Each year, thousands of horseshoe crabs mate and lay millions of eggs on beaches visible from the DuPont Nature Center’s observation deck. The eggs are a critical food source for migratory shorebirds, including the red knot, which stops at the Delaware Bay each spring on its 9,000 mile flight from Tierra del Fuego (South America’s southern most tip) to its summer nesting grounds in the Artic.

With the recent decisionby the Obama Administration to open up the Mid-Atlantic Coast to oil drilling, our beaches and coastal wildlife may be impacted by a future oil spill. Environmental effects are perhaps the broadest category of the effects of oil on wildlife. Environmental effects include, but are not limited to: immediate contamination of the regional food source; reduction in the breeding animals and plants that provide future food sources; contamination of nesting habitat, and re-duction in reproductive success through contamination and reduced hatchability of eggs or temporary disruption of ovarian function. Secondary contamination of nests, eggs, young, other flock members and predators is also common.External Effects The external effects of oil are the most noticeable and most immediately de-bilitating. Birds that are frequently affected by oil spills include those that remain on the water, such as ducks, loons, and grebes, and those that feed in the water, such as gulls, terns, herons, and birds of prey including bald eagles and ospreys. The internal effects of oil on birds, while not as apparent as the external ef-fects, are equally life-threatening. Direct toxic effects on the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas and liver have all been documented. Ingestion of oil by birds attempting to clean feathers through preening frequently results in injury to the gastrointesti-nal tract and kidneys. A similar irritation of other mucosal surfaces can lead to ul-ceration of eye surfaces, and the moist surfaces inside the mouth. Rapid retrieval of oiled wildlife and proper medical stabilization and evaluation by veterinarians and licensed wildlife rehabilitators experienced in the treatment of oiled wildlife are critical to the success in caring for oiled animals until it is ready for release.

Oil Spill Response Training WorkshopBe prepared for the next oil spill involving wildlife. Volunteers play an integral part in oiled wildlife response. Tri-State’s oil spill team offers training once each year to participate in this unique aspect of wildlife rehabilitation.tristatebird.org

Find an injured bird: Call (302)737-9543 10-5pm, Mon-Sun.Wild animals, just like family pets, need professional care when they are sick or injured. Broken bones and trau-matic injuries or diseases need veteri-nary care. If you find an injured bird, take it to a licensed Wildlife Rehabili-tator immediately. Wildlife Rehabilita-tors are people who dedicate their time and energy to healing sick wildlife and raising orphaned youngsters with the goal of returning them to their natural home. They are licensed by state and federal agencies, and they often work with veterinarians who specialize in wildlife medicine.

ticks:blood sucking parasitic arachnids may transmit infectious diseases.

Lyme disease can affect individual pets differently. Some animals may display no symptoms. Other animals may develop fever, loss of appetite, painful joints, lethargy, and vomiting. If left untreated, the spirochete may damage the eyes, heart, kidneys, and nervous system. Lyme disease has been diagnosed in humans, dogs, cats, horses, goats, and cattle.

Cats may show lameness, fever, loss of appetite, fatigue, eye damage, unusual breathing, or heart involvement. Many cats do not show noticeable symptoms, despite being infected.

Dogs that are infected may be lethargic, have a poor/loss of ap-petite, or a fever (103° - 105 ° F). Dogs may also experience lame-ness shifting from one joint to another, fatigue, kidney damage or failure, heart disorders, or neurologic involvement (e.g. aggression, confusion, overeating, seizures). Dogs can be infected with the Lyme bacterium but not exhibit any noticeable symptoms. Dogs appear to have the same expression of disease as humans, therefore, humans have been considered an animal model for dogs. Transplacental trans-mission has occurred in dogs.

You within 1 to 2 weeks of being infected, people may have a “bull’s-eye” rash with fever, headache, and muscle or joint pain. Some people have Lyme disease and do not have any early symptoms. Other people have a fever and other “flu-like” symptoms without a rash. After several days or weeks, the bacteria may spread throughout the body of an infected person. These people can get symptoms such as rashes in other parts of the body, pain that seems to move from joint to joint, and signs of inflammation of the heart or nerves. If the disease is not treated, a few patients can get additional symptoms, such as swelling and pain in major joints or mental changes, such as anxiety or depression. LOCAL LYME DISEASE MEETING; last Mondays, 6:30 pm Greater Salisbury Building, next to WMDT-TV, in downtown Salisbury. 410-749-LYME

PROTECT YOURSELF;Whenever possible, you should avoid entering areas that are likely to be infested with ticks, particularly in spring and summer when nymphal ticks feed. Wear light-colored clothing so that ticks can be spotted more easily and removed before becoming attached.(or long-sleeved shirts, tuck your pants into socks.)Apply as directed only- insect repellents containing DEET clothes and exposed skin, and permethrin (which kills ticks on contact) to clothes, should also help reduce the risk of tick attachment.Since transmission of B. burgdorferi from an infected tick is unlikely to occur before 36 hours of tick attachment, check for ticks daily and remove them promptly. Embedded ticks should be removed by using fine-tipped tweezers. Cleanse the area with an antiseptic.

You can reduce the number of ticks around your home by removing leaf litter, brush- and wood-piles in traffic areas. www.cdc.gov/healthypets

PROTECT PETS; When walking or exercising your outdoor pet, try to keep it away from grassy or wooded areas and leafy debris.Check your pet regularly for ticks, especially after any trips through grassy or wooded areas. Comb through your pet’s hair thoroughly. If you find a tick, remove it promptly. Lyme bacteria needs about 18 to 24 hours in order to transmit to your pet. Daily grooming keeps ticks at bay and keeps pets happy.

Consult your veterinarian about treating your dog with tick-killing pesticides (acaricides) or using tick collars. There are many pesticides aimed at preventing tick bites, but some people and animals are allergic to the chemicals they contain! If you find several ticks on your pet, you may wish to discuss an insecticidal bath with your veterinarian or groomer.

a l i t t l e p e t g o e s a l o n g w a yNo matter what your age, adding pets to your household is a good thing. For young children it is a learning opportunity in responsibility, compassion and discipline. Familiescan work together to train and care for their pets. Most impor-tantly, the shared relationship of love between a pet and its owner is a valuable gift. For those of us 50+, a pet offers the following real bonuses: * Studies have shown that pet companionship actu-ally improves senior citizen health and outlook on life. In addition‚ seniors with pets report feeling happier and safer. * The simple act of holding an animal can relieve symp-toms of depression, lower blood pressure, and even decrease surgical patients’ healing times. The long-term survival rates of heart attack victims who had a pet are significantly higher than for those who did not. * Widows who have cats are better off medically during their first year of widowhood, which is a critical stress time, than widows who do not. * One year after having a myocardial infarction, dog owners were more likely to still be living. * Dog walking, pet grooming, and even petting provide increased physical activity that strengthens the heart, im-proves blood circulation, and slows the loss of bone tissue. * Pet owners have lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels than non-owners. * The most serious disease for older persons is not cancer or heart disease — it’s loneliness. Love is the most im-portant health tonic we have, and pets are one of nature’s best sources of love.

Babyboomers represent the largest, healthiest, longest lived, and best educated generation in American history! They join an active senior popu-lation in their 70’s and 80’s. Is 70 the new 60? Studies verify that an active social lifestyle of physical exercise and mental stimulation promotes better overall health and lengthens life-span. Second careers have become common-place. Volunteers are an important aspect of healthy, vibrant communities. The wisdom and experience of seniors, combined with their desire to stay relevant makes them valuable contributors. The scenic Delmarva Peninsula, conveniently located at the center of 5 major metropolitian cities, offers many amenities desired by this popula-tion. By 2020 over 39% of the Eastern Shore of Maryland will be over 50. To engage and support seniors, MAC ( Maintaining Active Citizens) the area Agency on Aging, Beacon at Salisbury University with it’s graySHORE Initiative, Wor-Wic Community College and University of Maryland Eastern Shore are launching NCE. (the 50+ Network for Creative Engagement) NCE seeks to provide an umbrella to direct seniors to region-al organizations offering civic engagement, healthcare services, continu-ing education and recreation. While currently in the planning stages, NCE encourages area organizations to join its members to offer services through a centralized network. The Shore’s seniors represent a significant economic force that un-derstands and appreciates the value of our communities and picturesque downtowns. Their sweat equity and interest fuels 75 % of volunteer action. Keeping this population pro-actively healthy and vital makes economic sense. The following pages offer a tiny slice of the many opportunities available across the shore both for seniors 50+ and anyone else who wishes to pursue them.

senior outingGo outside and play! We’re not talking to your grandkids, we’re talking to you. Worldwide, more seniors are doing it—heading outdoors to get some exercise. But we’re not talking about just walking. They’retoning their tummies and hips and strengthening their upper bodies—all on simple fitness equipment that’s been installed in parks, fields, or along walking trails. Recent studies verify that fresh air and sunshine are the best tonic for maintaining health and wellbeing for folks of all ages. The designs are simple and may be built by anyone; equipment such as a leg cycle (a set of foot pedals and a hand-rail), an arm cycle, the “pod step” (a series of platforms at various heights), the “ramp walk” (a gently sloping track), and a balance beam with built-in hand rails. It seems to have started in China. Under that country’s Nationwide Physical Fitness Program, outdoor fitness centers geared to all ages were installed in urban public parks and squares in the early 2000s. China has tens of thousands of these fitness parks, some with as many as 40 pieces of equipment—and additional programs like ballroom dancing or tai chi. In Tokyo, the parks are called “nursing care prevention play-grounds” have been around since 2004. Each piece of equipment has simple instructions posted next to it, and an information board offers options for various skill levels. In the US, there are typically eight to ten pieces of equipment along fitness trails, geared for adults all ages. Information panels tell you how to work out at that spot. IDEA: why not try to create a “fitness” park in each of our Shore towns. It doesn’t need to be costly, station workout designs are on the web. ** Paved .47 mile walking track. Can be used for walking, running, bicycling or rollerblading. ** Ten fitness stations. Placed at measured intervals along the track. Each station gives you an exercise to perform and useful information on topics such as healthy eating, exercise, stress reduction and pain manage-ment. **Practice field. sports practice, kite flying, picnics & pet walking.(Salisbury has the remnants of a fitness trail along the river)wellness; mind & body

As a “ 93 Grad.”; Betty recieved a Master’s Degree at Notre Dame of Maryland and a PhD from Union Institute & University, Cincinnati, Ohio in 2000. She raised five children, (No. 5 lost his life in a boating accident when only 14.) various grandchildren(5), (one recently lost his life in a boating accident!) - and now great-grandchildren! (5). (Be careful while boating.)

Late Bloomer. “I worked at Deers’ Head Center, in Salisbury as Volunteer Coordina-tor for 17 years. Fun stuff; learned to fly during WWII, went sky diving around age 78 or so; got a tattoo (hidden) as reward for gradu-ating from SU at age 60!”

Acknowledging people that go above & beyond in serving their workplace & the greater community.

How do you recharge? Just plain enjoying friends and goofing off. : I live on the water. That and the ocean and the outdoors. Mostly though, would be family, friends and good books. Chasing the Canada geese out of my yard. What’s ahead? Riding a zip-line is on my bucket list. My thoughts on being a senior: “If I had known then what I know now.” The wonder part about age is that one has more choices, given the health to enjoy it. Words of wisdom: I’m not old enough to have any of those. Well maybe. “Try not to miss anything in this world.”

current focus “ I am interested in PALS, (Peace Alliance of the Eastern Shore) and education geared to conflict resolution. I find myself trying to help getting rid of conflict from the ground up or at least wanting to...Meaning in families, gangs, neighborhoods, whatever is at the base of the pyramid of unending conflicts. Wishing I could make some good difference.”What drives you: An anxiety to see some improvement in myself before I kick off.

publisher’s note:Betty has remained positive and invested in our community, in spite of some daunting chal-lenges. One thing Betty has achieved over her years here is when her name is mentioned to another- a smile immedi-atly dances on to that person’s lips and they tell a nice “Betty story”- ending with...”She is such great person!”
