Beware of a Religious Spirit “Whatever is not from faith is sin.” – Romans 14:23

Isn’t morality a good thing? Morality when it is expressed out of true faith in Jesus Christ is a very important dimension of our walk with Christ, but, sadly, many people make the terrible error of thinking that being a Christian is simply a matter of being moral. Morality, as expressed in human righteousness, can be a terrible trap of the evil one.

The Word of God tells us that all of our self-righteousness is as filthy rags in the sight of God (Isa. 64:6). The problem is that manmade religion focuses on human righteousness, rather than the righteousness that comes by faith and is through faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 1:17). Self-righteousness is particularly a great and deep trap of the devil. The Pharisees were extremely righteous from a human point of view, but they ended up crucifying the Lord of glory, who is God who came in human form, because their righteousness was not God’s true righteousness. As a result, they didn’t have God’s heart in their view of the world and while they were deeply religious, they really did not know the Father at all. Paul, in Philippians 3, tells us that he practiced the Pharisees’ way of righteousness and it led him deeply astray from true righteousness that comes from God alone through the Lord Jesus. It led him to even oppose the early church and be a persecutor of those who were the true followers of God. Tragically, a religious spirit can greatly hinder the advance of the true gospel of Jesus Christ. Beware of a religious spirit that misleads far too many professing Christians. Dr. John Piper, who is an excellent Bible teacher, author and pastor, tells us the following about this trap of the evil one:

“Among churchgoers, Satan is primarily in the business of replacing vital faith with mere morality. He loves to take a life flowing from happy confidence in God and turn it into a perfunctory religious regimen. Don't let him do it! For ‘whatever is not from faith is sin,’ including religion. “One of Satan's most successful lies is that sin can be limited to a manageable list of dos and don'ts. The reason this is so satanic is that it causes thousands of churchgoers to think that things are OK between them and God because they avoid one list of don'ts and practice another (much shorter) list of dos; but in fact may be sinning all day long, incurring the wrath of God, because their attitudes and actions do not come from faith in the promises of God.”

The Lord Jesus gives us His righteousness, that comes from God alone, on the basis of a real faith relationship with Him (Rom. 1:16-17, 10:9, 10). Have you truly turned from your sin and even your own righteousness and asked the Lord to forgive you for going your own way? Are you truly living daily in relationship with Him, listening for His voice through His Word and prayer, or are you following a religious spirit that says, “A little religion is enough.” Friend, don’t be deceived. So much religion is in truth odious to God because it keeps multitudes from truly coming to Him by faith. Come to Him in faith, turning from your own righteousness, and ask Him to forgive you for trusting in your own righteousness. Trust in Jesus alone for His righteousness (Phil. 3:8, 9) and enter into a relationship of knowing Him, not just knowing about Him. It will transform your life! His joy, peace and love will come in greater and greater measure as you follow His voice diligently, and you will build His church with Him, and the gates of hell will not prevail in your life as it is joined with His true church.

Walking in the Spirit moment by moment, Pastor Jack
