Open House: September 1, 2016 6:00pm-7:30pm

Don’t miss Cherrington’s Open House event coming up on Thursday, September 1st. Please join us for the opportunity to get to know your student’s teachers and learn about classroom routines, homework

procedures, and gain a better understanding of Ohio’s Learning Standards. Teachers will elaborate on how

they will apply these state mandated standards to the process of ensuring students are meeting specific academic expectations according to grade level. This is also an opportunity to meet our specials

teachers and discover what your child is learning and doing in Art, Music, and Physical Education classes.

Please see http://www.corestandards.org/ for more information about the Common Core, or visit the Ohio Department of Education at www.ode.state.oh.us and search “new standards.”

Counselor Connection: Welcome Back Cougars!! Hello, I am Mrs. Porter, the School Counselor. I service the entire school with classroom guidance lessons and am here to help students and staff. This year we are heavily focusing on PBIS. We are all about creating positive experiences here at Cherrington for both the students and the staff. In order to create the most positive envi-ronment for learning, we have created a Positive Behavior Framework Handbook; most of you may have received this at Back to School Day. This handbook explains our school’s rules and behavior expectations. We have five simple rules here at Cherrington, that we call the CHERRINGTON CHOICE:

I choose to respect myself and others by: Following adult directions

Speaking appropriately Keeping hands, feet, and objects to myself

Walking quietly in the building Being prepared to learn

These rules are recited daily during the morning announcements and are also discussed in greater detail within the classrooms. Each week we will have a corresponding question that will be our focus for the week. As the School Counselor I will also be tailoring my lessons to better facilitate the Cherrington Choice. By following these five simple rules our students will be able to partake in an incentive that we are launching for this school year (2016-2017), called Cougars with Character. When a student has met the Cougars with Character criteria, he or she will have the opportunity to participate in the incentive activity at the end of each quarter. The incentive activities will be school wide or grade wide (k-2) (3-5) depending on the activity. The goal is to promote positive behavior that fosters an environment conducive to learning. Cougars must meet the following criteria to participate in the quarterly incentive activity: 1st Quarter- consistently followed Cherrington Choice 90% of qtr. 2nd Quarter- consistently followed Cherrington Choice 92% of qtr. 3rd Quarter- consistently followed Cherrington Choice 94% of qtr. 4th Quarter- consistently followed Cherrington Choice 96% of qtr. I hope that the students are just as excited about these incentives as we are. I cannot wait to see each one of you this week as we start our new school year!!!! Best of luck to a great school year, Mrs. Porter School Counselor [email protected] 614-797-7050

Students will be going outside for recess, so please make sure that they wear sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, or whatever protective covering works best for your child.

The clinic tries to have clothes available for various mishaps that will occur, however we depend solely on donations. It is highly recommended to keep a change of seasonally appropriate clothes in your student’s backpack for such occasions.

Dear Families,

The Cherrington PTA welcomes you to the 2016-2017 school year! We have many exciting events and activities planned for this year, as well as continuing annual school events like the Walk a Thon and Winter-fest. Over the years our school has benefitted from a very active PTA, supportive parents & volunteers, and an amazing staff. The PTA and Cherrington staff work together to plan many events that are enjoyed by our student population including COSI day, field day, author visit, and movie nights. We support the school by purchasing items for the playground, providing funds to purchase technology (like additional chromebooks), purchasing school shirts for all students, and providing staff meals for teacher appreciation.

Our PTA raises money for these activities with 2 large fundraisers each year: the Walk a Thon and the Little Caesar pizza sale. The Walk a Thon is in September and gives us a great starting off point for our financial year. This is a great fundraiser because it encourages our students to exercise and 100% of the funds raised stays with our school instead of having to pay a percentage to a fundraising company. Other ways that we add dollars to our budget is with restaurant dining nights, store loy-alty cards, box tops, coke rewards, and funding factory. More infor-mation about how to take advantage of these opportunities are below. Please consider supporting these fundraising opportunities!

Box Tops can be clipped & collected on the collection sheets in your PTA envelope or in bag-gies. Annual Walk-a-Thon The walk-a-thon will be held Friday, Sept. 23rd. Students are encouraged to collect donations, in which 100% of the donations benefit our school throughout the year. Every student receives a T-shirt, snack and a fun-filled day of activities. Thanks to the combined efforts of students, staff, and families, we raised more than $10,500 last year. Watch for detailed information about the walk-a-thon at the end of August, as well as prizes that will be awarded, to come in September. Walk-a-Thon Event Sponsors Needed We are looking for local businesses, organizations to sponsors our event. We are looking for sponsors to donate items or money donations to use as incentives for participants. All event sponsors will have a sign put up on the day of the event along with their name or business infor-mation advertised in the Student Directory that is provided to every student and the addition-al acknowledgment in the PTA Newsletter.
