Plastics Additives & Compounding March/April 2009 6 News MATERIALS New impact modifier offers cost and performance efficiencies Arkema Inc.’s PVC Additives Group has introduced Durastrength® 619 acrylic impact modifier to the PVC market. e company says that Durastrength 619 acrylic impact modifier offers efficiency advantages over existing acrylic modifiers and chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), allowing processors to lower their overall formulation costs. Durastrength 619 impact modifiers, as well as other Durastrength impact modifiers, and Plastistrength® process aids are manufactured at the company’s Axis, AL, plant in the USA. According to Arkema, Durastrength 619 is an acrylic impact modifier that imparts good impact properties to rigid PVC products and also provides good processability without the need for adding processing aids for most applications. Durastrength 619 is claimed to offer formulation flexibility through a combination of good impact resistance and processability. Superior impact performance can be used to improve properties or decrease modifier loading at constant performance. “is is a perfect example of Arkema’s focus and commitment to the PVC market. With the current downturn in the economy, we feel it’s more important than ever to invest in new product development and provide a foundation to support the PVC market for years to come,” said Jim McAliney, general manager, PVC Additives. Arkema’s PVC Additives Group offers a wide range of products to the PVC market including Durastrength impact modifiers, Plastistrength process aids, ermolite® tin stabilizers, Clearstrength® MBS impact modifiers and Vikoflex® epoxidized soybean oil. Designed to perform in applications where traditional liquid mixed metals are currently used, these new ranges are the latest contribution to Chemtura’s ‘Greener is Better’ theme in new product development. is means that the new mixed metal stabilizers have been screened to ensure they are more sustainable additive solutions than the products they replace. Mark 800 and Mark 900 products complement Chemtura’s existing REACH friendly stabilizer ranges such as the Mark OBS, Mark EZ and Mark CZ series. ASACLEAN C is claimed to be suitable for all thermoplastics in a temperature range of 180- 360°C, while ASACLEAN CP is designed to purge all polyolefin’s in a temperature range of 170- 300°C. Both grades are neither abrasive nor corrosive and applicable for colour and material changes, sealing and hot runner cleaning. ASACLEAN CG is a glass filled purging compound for an efficient and quick elimination of heavy contamination or burnt material in the barrel. is grade has the highest purging power, which means that it can offer a significant economic advantage. e company adds that these three new grades allow a significant decrease in time and material usage during colour and material changes.
