CHEMTECH was compelled to cancel the South edition of flagship event scheduled to be organised in Chennai from December 10-12, 2015 in Chennai due to the unfortunate disaster that the city had to face, however many exhibitors from the South show have confirmed their presence during the forthcoming CHEMTECH Gujarat World Expo 2016.

The chemical industry in Gujarat has grown 7 folds during the period of 2001-2012 and continued to maintain the positive

growth momentum through attracting investment in downstream chemical manufacturing as well as the allied services providing sectors. The step to organise the regional show has been receiving much more than the anticipated response as more technology companies are interested in participating in the event. issues that are proving as roadblocks. He further added that this exposition will serve as a platform to discuss a variety of topics, particularly ‘Make in India’ and how it links up with the energy sector.

The CAB members deliberated that the conference theme must lay adequate emphasis on technology for holistic development to expand India’s nuclear capacity. According to Dr Kakodkar and committee members, nuclear energy will help the country march towards a green future and empower the ecosystem, making it ready to tackle future energy needs.

Discussions that highlight the role of nuclear energy in mitigating climate change, making nuclear energy in India more competitive, devising strategies to fulfil current energy challenges and generating a 3600 perspective for the industry as well as stakeholders will

make for a very engaging exposition. This will also enable exchange and synergy and the industry will be better informed.

Apart from focussing on energy generation, exploring the non-power applications in medicine, agriculture, industrial application, etc, will throw light on the multidimensional nature of nuclear energy. The need of the hour is to hasten implementation as India’s nuclear capacity addition is large. Moving past bottlenecks will help regain momentum, help in constructive strategising for resolving barriers and set India on the roadmap for accelerated nuclear capacity expansion.

Mr T N R Rao to Chair the Awards Committee for CHEMTECH Awards 2016

Mr T N R Rao, Former Secretary, Ministry for Petroleum & Natural Gas, Government of India has consented to chair the Awards Committee for CHEMTECH Leadership & Excellence Awards 2016.

Since 2004, CHEMTECH decided to recognise the priceless contribution of visionaries and technocrats to Indian oil & gas and energy industries who were setting the foundation for the development of industry and paving the way for the progress of future generations.

In the words of Mr Jasu Shah, Founder & Chairman, CHEMTECH Foundation, “The fundamental objective of awards was to celebrate the progress that India is gearing up for in the oil and gas industry. This initiative is an attempt to accelerate the development in the Indian hydrocarbon industry and enable it to compete on a global level.”

The jury will meet in the mid of January in New Delhi and decide the winners for awards across various categories in energy sector. The awards will be presented during the gala ceremony on March 3, 2016 in Mumbai. Members of the jury include stalwarts from the oil & gas industry and past award winners.

In a recent development, Austria has extended support to the WaterEX World Expo 2017 as the Partner Country and will bring an industry delegation during the event. Water & waste water treatment is one of the key areas for the Indian government and the industry which is over USD 100 billion. Additionally, the Municipal Sewage Waste treatment market is growing fast in India which will offer ample opportunities to the technology providers. India continues to set strict targets of improving CO2 emissions and the Government is taking concrete steps in CO2 sequestration and encouraging investments in this field.

As per the IMF, India will move to the 7th position from the 8th position in the year 2016 and with the GDP growth, India will be ranked 6th globally. In context with the chemical industry, global chemical industry is about USD 4 trillion and over the past 20 years, the chemical industry has posted the best results. When it comes to India, the USD 150 billion chemical industry is projected to grow at 11 per cent, which according to the estimates is expected to increase at the rate of 15 per cent because of three key reasons: manufacturing base is shifting to the East, India included; all products are being accepted outside India; exchange rate is favourable to India and manufacturers can be competitive outside India. The current Government's ‘Make in India’ campaign is giving a major thrust to industrial growth and policy reforms, incentivising investments for Indian and foreign investors are creating a good environment.

Talking about uncertainty in oil prices, Mr Mehta stated that value addition to the refining operations was a natural progression for the refiners to improve refining margins and be globally competent. Members were of the opinion to invite a speaker from the Ministry of Petroleum & natural Gas who could talk about the Government’s perspective for the refineries after the drop in global

crude prices. Mr. Ernest Jan Benist, VP - Business Development India, Jacobs Engineering drew attention of towards the cheap labour and equipment cost which can significantly offset the high feedstock costs for manufacturing in India thus making Indian refining & petrochemical manufacturers globally more competitive. The members of the board will share further suggestions on topics and speakers to finalise the content.

The board has unanimously proposed the theme of the conference as “Sustainable Growth in Refining & Petrochemicals under Global Uncertainties” and agreed to have deliberations on global trends, technologies and project implementation during the conference.
