“From a platform for chemical processing equipment & technology, Chemtech has evolved as the platform for Technology, Innovation, and Inspiration. We believe, now the time has come where it needs to further evolve as the platform for Invention. We have been very proud and privileged that the industry has embraced this idea very strongly.”
Mr Maulik JasubhaiChairman & Chief Executive, Jasubhai Group & CHEMTECH Foundation
“Consumer centricity is becoming a very important pillar for all organizations. For an FMCG company, this is the life blood.”
Mr. Gurpreet KohliGlobal Program Director – R&D, Hindustan Unilever Limited
“We talk about ‘Make in India’ concept today, that Mr. Jasubhai Shah, founder of Chemtech started talking many years ago. And his dream to dream that the young talent should stay on India and should do the nation building is now getting translated into reality.”
Mr. Yatinder Pal Singh SuriCountry Head & Managing Director, Outokumpu Ltd
“We are already witnessing a surge in purchasing power in the potentially large middle class segment and this will only fuel exponential consumption, which is good for us. As consumers seek stronger value propositions and lifestyle changes, they also desire for premium products and elevated experiences.”
Mr Adnan AhmadVice Chairman & Managing Director, Clariant Chemicals (India) Ltd. & Chairman Specialty Chemicals South World Expo 2017

“I think there are three main points, which are crucial for Make in India - Industry, Market and Support coming from the Government in terms of policies, regulations, infrastructure & provisions etc. If you look at the industry, it is in an extremely vibrant stage. There are many good companies focused on the specialty chemicals market who are willing to put their whole hard work to get to the market and grow along.”
Mrs. Priya BhumkarMD, Soujanya Colours
“As one of the end users of specialty chemicals, to have specialty chemical industry based out of India would allow us to work more closely with them. This would create win-win situation for collaboration and innovating for the consumers. At present, we rely for almost 50 per cent of our specialty chemicals requirements on imports.”
Mr Aashish KshetryVP- Supply Chain, Asian Paints
“In terms of managing the on-ground realities such as managing the socio-economic challenges, infrastructure, environment etc. some of the State Governments are doing well as compared to the others. While the Governments do play a very critical role in development of industry they must ensure that the industry should flourish without compromising on its accountability.”
Dr A L N RaoDirector of Manufacturing & ESH, Indofil
“All of us in the business know that one will get a big opportunity once in five-ten years. You have to grab it and make it big. For the chemical industry this is the time.”
Mr Vishal GoenkaDirector, Sterling Auxiliaries Ltd
“In my observation, at this point of time, it is time to bring in new standards for sustainable products and educate the market. However, this would also need to educate the stakeholders about the necessity to upgrade themselves and develop a business model that is suitable for the India both in terms of scale and market diversity.”
Mr. Ambrish DixitCOO, Paushak Ltd

Session-II: Catalysing Growth of “Knowledge Chemistry”
L-R) Mr Parag Karhadkar, Director Sales – India, SEA, Perstorp Group, Dr Kishan Gurram, Director SABIC Technology Center – Bengaluru, Dr. Suresh Kumar, Project Leader-Technical, Advanced Enzymes Technologies Ltd, Dr. N. Lingaiah, Principal Scientist, Catalysis Laboratory, I&PC Division, CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad
“India has a large pool of knowledge comprising of pioneering institutes, academicians, researchers & scientists. The sad part is that we have not exploited our resources to their full potential to build our innovation ecosystem. It is an imperative to think about how the industry can engage with the academia to develop the research at the grass root level and utilize the institutes for the development of new innovations.”
Dr. Suresh KumarProject Leader-Technical, Advanced Enzymes Technologies Ltd
“In the specialty chemicals industry, what we are talking today is about offering innovative solutions to respond to the needs of the customers. Since time is a very critical factor in developing the new research and then bringing to the market, I think it is an imperative to build the innovation ecosystem and industry should adopt collaborative approach with academia and research institutes to speed up the process of developing innovative solutions.”
Dr Kishan GurramDirector SABIC Technology Center – Bengaluru
“CSIR is actually in the new environment as we are trying to interact more with the industry by inviting the local chemical manufacturers and manufacturers from other parts of the country to understand the challenges that they face where our institute can intervene for research support and deliver the solutions in the given time frame.”
Dr. N. Lingaiah Principal Scientist, Catalysis Laboratory, I&PC Division, CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad
“For any company to grow sustainably and defend the business, it is critical to have three pronged strategy based on what the organization offers, a clean cut approach to stay ahead in the competition, and planning for new business activities. When it comes to allocation of resources, most of the companies have to do a balancing act which leaves them with little or no time for innovation.”

“It is important to be responsible when you are talking about sustainability and recycling is a very important element for closing the loop. United Nations came out with around 20 Sustainability Goals in 2016. As a company, Outokumpu has been trying its level best to serve many of those goals.”
Mr. Yatinder Pal Singh Suri Country Head & Managing Director, Outokumpu Ltd.
“Sustainability is something that doesn’t come for free but it has a huge cost if you don’t do it. It is something which is going to come and hit you over”
Mr. Florian WeilermannHead of Procurement Services IMEA, Clariant Chemicals (India) Ltd
“Anything you do for sustainability, it gives you profit it gives you competitiveness and adds value to whatever you offer to the end user. However, every action has to comply with the three bottom lines of ecology, economic and environment, otherwise we will not be able to run our businesses.”
Dr Sudhir Nambiar Head R&T, Hikal Ltd
“There is a need for our country to shift from linear to circular economy where we make wise use of resources continuously and prevent them from going into the landfills or oceans. For India, circular economy is not a new phenomenon as we see lot of steel, glass and metal getting recycled. But for plastics, the industry that I come from, I don’t think we see this happening. We have got used to the lifestyle of using disposable materials but post consumption we don’t treat it the way to get value from it.”
Mr Vipul BabuSales Director, India Subcontinent, Packaging and Specialty Plastics Business, Dow Chemical International Pvt. Ltd
“I think we are also missing out on a lot of opportunities of creating values from the resources available in the country clearly due to the lack of strategic coordinated approach between research institutions and enterprises in the country.”
Mr. Santosh JayaramPartner & Head - Sustainability and CSR Advisor, KPMG

“The Indian approach to business is not about fundamental innovation, but implemental. Many companies over the last decades or so in India have done exceedingly well, but what they haven’t done is invent. You see many big Indian companies that are successful and have huge amount of talent still there are no big innovations coming from them. The key question that we should ask ourselves is - why it is not happening in India?”
Mr Adnan AhmadVC & MD, Clariant Chemicals (India) Ltd.
“There is absolutely tremendous need for much greater interaction between industry and academia and steps have to be taken from both sides. We are suspicious and not adequately respectful of the institutions and our capability. I think they also do not look upon us as sources of really taking the product into the market and also even providing resources for lot of innovations.”
Dr Raman RamachandranHead South Asia & CMD, BASF India Ltd
“If I look at from the industry point of view, what we have in India today is outstanding talent. When we look at what is getting created globally, very often we find Indian names but not from India. This is because, inventors are given a very different kind of treatment in some parts of the world. We have to look at where people say we have to innovate and we need to put aside sizeable amount of our money in each of our industry for innovation rather than only focusing on the quarterly results.”
Mr. Ravi KapurMD, Heubach Colour Pvt Ltd
Session-IV: CEO Roundtable
“Innovation is crucial for all the specialty chemical manufacturers irrespective of the fact whether they are large, mid or small in size. For some, budget is a constraint and others are not sure about the returns on investments. In India, we already have many government supported national labs with state of the art facilities and equipment and a strong pool of researchers. What we need is a platform that can offer effective market oriented collaboration of industry and academia. This would ensure that both the labs and academia serve the industry better and industry opens itself to spending on effective innovation.”
