Chemistry Syllabus Fall 2011 Mr P. Quinlan Room #302

Introduction: Chemistry involves understanding and experimenting with atoms, molecules,

and substances that demonstrate physical or chemical changes. This semester, we will

cover the following items (order is subject to change):

    Week and Topic

    1 Rules, Policies, Twitter, Moodle,

    and Matter

    2 Safety and Equipment

    3 Measurements, numbers, and

    calculations

    4 Chemical Matter Properties and

    Changes

    5 Atomic Theory

    6 Periodic Table,

    7 Metals and Non-metals

    8 Electronegativity, atomic size,

    and reactivity

    9 Electrons, Orbitals

    1 10 ElectronConfigurations

    11 Ionic Bondng

Responsibilities of Students: Understanding science involves reading, writing, speaking, and

listening to information. Using your own learning strengths, processing information into logical

models, notes, labelled drawings, foldables, essays, or poems helps embed this information into

long-term memory. Your grade will be determined by:

    a. Listening respectfully to the teacher and other students 25%

    b. Reading and responding to text, articles, and books to increase understanding 25%

    c. Writing notes to capture information in reports, diagrams, vocabulary, or thinking maps

    25%

    d. Speaking with respect, when asked. 25%

    A = 90-100% B=80-90% C=70-80% D=60-70% F=0-60%

Expectations: Students need to act safely, maturely, and respectfully everyday. Students who

disrupt the learning of others, arrive late, and make rude remarks will receive a 15-minutedetention. Detentions need to be served before the end of the 5-week, 10-week, 15-week, or 20-

week grading periods. Unserved detentions will cause an incomplete to be given (equivalent to

an F). Only the 20-week grade will be changed if the student serves a missing detention within

a week. Parents will be called when detentions are issued, and may need to attend a meeting

    with the Teacher.

Communication: The use of technology will allow all students to keep up with instruction

everyday, even if a student is absent. Course materials (powerpoints, videos, worksheets, etc.)

will be available in a digital format in my classroom and online. Students will be provided with a

link to Windows Live (www.skydrive.live.com) and my Twitter page which will provide materials,

accessible by any computer. To minimize paper, several assignments may be turned in using

email. The text, Glencoe Chemistry: Matter and Change, will be provided to each student,

allowing a paper option. This text will also be available in a digital format for online access.

Materials: An 8x11 notebook, adequate pens and pencils, and erasers are required. Students

must ask for permission prior to using the teachers materials. Failure to ask will result in a

    detention.

Please provide your name, the students name, sign and provide phone numbers for day (during

    class) and evening.

Mr. Quinlans Science Routines and Rules: Practice - Practice - Practice

5 minutes: Students silently sit in assigned seat before the bell rings to start the warm

up. A short paragraph response is written in notebook. Late students will

lose points for the day. 5 points

14 min: SSR students sit in assigned seat before the bell rings to start reading a

book of their choice. Students who do not bring a book or are late or

disruptive during SSR will receive a detention and a call home.

10 min: Q & A/Quizzes: Upon completing the warm-up, students are to wait silently

for an opportunity to participate in discussions, Questions-and-

Answers, and review of prior materials. Pre-Quizzes (collected, not graded)

may be given, as well. All students need to raise their hand and wait

silently to be called on before speaking. Disrupting class will incur -5 points.

    10 Points

15 min. Presentation: The content will be presented by the teacher using visuals

projected models, powerpoint presentations, videosand students will

listen silently. Notetaking is not done at this stage. All students need to

listen silently. Disruptive students may be recorded if inappropriate

language is used, and a parent will be called or invited to a meeting. 15

    points

20 min: Information gathering, Processing, and Creating: Students will use text,

visuals, diagrams, computers, and videos to record required information

into their notebooks. Most materials (except some videos/visuals) will be

available online to be completed at home (homework).

Process information into tangible or written form using any two options:

foldable, thinking map, 8x11 poster, essay, report, poem, Haiku, 321.

4 min.: Summarize what was learned in notebook using 321, think-pair-share (I

    learned and

    My partner learned). 20 points

Tests: Quizzes and tests will be used to assess student learning. These will provide

    50% of the

students grade. Missed quizzes must be taken in Room #302 by

arrangement with the teacher. 50 Points

Notebooks: Notebooks will be collected and graded. Students will be given a week

notice to complete items before the turn-in date. Late notebooks will incur a

    50% penalty.

Missing/Late work: All assignments must be completed. Missing work is equivalent to an

    incomplete and your

grade will be an F. Late work will incur a 50% penalty.

    End of Class

The teacher dismisses the class, not the bell. Wait until I say You

    may leave.

    Students leave class quietly.

Items may be borrowed. The first person who uses an item is

    responsible for its return.

    Rules:

    1. Sit in your seat, be prepared, follow directions, pay attention, and do notdisrupt class.

    2. Raise your hand (without speaking) to ask a relevant question or to

    respond to a question.

    3. Minimize distractions by keeping electronic items in your backpack on the
