Heterogeneous Mixtures

• Heterogeneous Mixture – a mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout.

• Examples– Salad– Chocolate chip cookie– Chicken noodle soup

• Homogeneous Mixture – a mixture in which the composition is uniform throughout.

• Another name for a homogeneous mixture is a solution.

• Examples– Vinegar– Air

Phase

• Phase– any part of a sample with uniform composition and properties.

• Homogeneous Mixtures – 1 phase• Heterogeneous Mixtures – 2 or more phases

Separating Mixtures

• Differences in physical properties can be used to separate mixtures

• Methods– Filtration – separates a solid from a liquid– Distillation – separates liquids based on boiling pt.– Magnetism

Filtration

• Filtration – the process that separates a solid from a liquid in a heterogeneous mixture

– Filter paper is placed in a funnel.– The mixture is poured into the funnel.– Solid particles that cannot pass through the filter

remain in the funnel.– The rest of the particles pass through.
