Synthesis of the Clathrate-I Phase Ba8-xSi46 via Redox Reactions. — Microcrystal-line powders of the title clathrate phase (1.3 < x < 1.9, space group Pm3n) are synthe-sized within a few minutes by oxidation of Ba4Li2Si6 with gaseous HCl obtained from NH4Cl (two-zone furnace: 210 and 400 °C, 6.67 mbar HCl, single-zone furnace: 500 °C, 15 min).
