The SEED program was successfully completed complying with all the SEED guidelines, safety training and career counselling. Project SEED Two of the SEED fellows published their research in the ACS journals Langmuir and Analytical Chemistry. SEED fellows won first prize at the Virginia Junior Academy of Sciences, entered in the list of semifinalists for 2013 Siemens Competition presenting their SEED research. The events included career management workshops, outreach activities, thematic networking trivia, happy hours, chemistry demonstrations Halloween and Mole Day celebration, museum visits, chemistry scavenger hunt and invited talks such as “The Chemistry of Money” and “Chemistry in Forensic Science.” Younger Chemists Committee A stable and active new CSW- YCC was formed in 2013 and in the beginning year itself CSW-YCC successfully organized 15 events that were attended by about 634 participants. These events were highly attractive to chemists at all stages of their careers, but in particular students and young professionals. Career management workshops (4 modules) were organized that were attended by 175 participants. Thematic networking and trivia happy hours (4 events - Beer Chemistry, How Well Do You Know the World of Chemistry, Chemistry Scavenger Hunt, and a Halloween- Mole Day Event) were held. Career Program In 2013 CSW with its YCC , successfully organized 9 events that were attended by about 320 participants. The career events were a big success and highly popular among the younger generation of chemists. After advertising for committee volunteers in the CSW’s monthly, the Capital Chemist, the new committee was formed in 2012 and held its first meeting in December 2012 to brainstorm ideas for activities in 2013. The Committee invited and organized two dinner speakers to speak on topics related to chemistry and the environment and/or sustainability. Sustainability Activities The CSW Environmental/Sustainability Committee organized several successful events in 2013, including Chemists Celebrate Earth Day – Rockville Science Day, Anacostia Environmental Youth Summit, and dinner meeting speakers. Leadership Development Dr. Jodi L. Chemical Society of Washington

Different activities such as: an orientation program and a scientific workshops were organized. A Poster Presentation about SEED research was conducted and a best poster award was given. All the events were well attended. The SEED program was successfully completed complying with all the SEED guidelines, safety training and career counselling.

Project SEED

Two of the SEED fellows published their research in the ACS journals Langmuir and Analytical Chemistry.

SEED fellows won first prize at the Virginia Junior Academy of Sciences, entered in the list of semifinalists for 2013 Siemens Competition presenting their SEED research.

The events included career management workshops, outreach activities, thematic networking trivia, happy hours, chemistry demonstrations Halloween and Mole Day celebration, museum visits, chemistry scavenger hunt and invited talks such as “The Chemistry of Money” and “Chemistry in Forensic Science.”

Younger Chemists Committee A stable and active new CSW- YCC was formed in 2013 and in the beginning year itself CSW-YCC successfully organized 15 events that were attended by about 634 participants.

These events were highly attractive to chemists at all stages of their careers, but in particular students and young professionals.

Career management workshops (4 modules) were organized that were attended by 175 participants. Thematic networking and trivia happy hours (4 events - Beer Chemistry, How Well Do You Know the World of Chemistry, Chemistry Scavenger Hunt, and a Halloween-Mole Day Event) were held.

Leadership Development

Dr. Jodi L. Wesemann, Assistant Director for Educational Research, ACS presented the course and explained how to create new ideas by systematically creating new approaches, eliminating personal and organization barriers. The program also included activities that helped all participants generate ideas in different ways, how to open new possibilities challenging the traditional and encouraging diverse perspectives

CSW organized a leadership course ‘Fostering Innovation’ on October 19, 2013 at ACS Headquarters.

For the first time in CSW history, 17 disadvantaged high school students were supported from DC, VA and MD.
