    The resistance to specific chem i-

    cals is given in the table below .

    The sym bols and abbreviations

    used have the follow ing m eanings:

    + = resistant over a period of

    m onths to years

    0 = lim ited resistance: som e

    sw elling, solvation or

    environm ental stress

    cracking is possible

    = not resistant: severe

    sw elling, decom position,

    solvation or environm ental

    stress cracking

    soln.= saturated aqueous solution

    (MABS) and Luranyl (PPE+PS-I)

    Percentages given in brackets are

    the concentrations (% by w eight)

    of aq ueous solutions unless other-

    w ise stated .

    It should be noted that the values

    in the table generally relate to the

    pure chem icals. Industrial grade

    chem icals, foodstuffs and other

    preparations frequently contain

    auxiliaries or im purities w hich m ay

    significantly affect perform ance.

    Another significant factor deter-

    m ining chem ical resistance is the

    existence of internal stresses

    w ithin a m olding. C hem icals to

    w hich stress-free styrene copoly-

    m ers are resistant, for exam plepentane, hexane and heptane,

    can cause cracking w hen com -

    bined w ith m echanical stress.

    It should be noted that som e

    chem icals (e.g. sod ium hypo-

    chlorite) m ay cause color changes

    in colored plastics.

    Therefore, these tab les can only

    give guidelines for the expected

    perform ance of m oldings m ade

    from the plastics m entioned .

    Practical tests are essential to

    give definitive results.
