Pure substances: Have specific properties thatidentify them. Can be oftwo types:

Compounds: If can be decomposed intosimpler substances by chemical methods.(Water, H20).

Simple substances or elements: Can notbe decomposed into simpler substances.(Oxygen, 02).

Matter is composed atoms.

Atoms are the smallest particles of a

chemical element.

Are composed ofprotons and neutronsin the core, and the electrons in thecrust.

Composite substances are formed bythe joining of two or more differentatoms, and its constant proportion in

each molecule. For example. Water(H2O)

The chemical elements are made up of

equal atoms, but different from those ofother elements.

The atomic number is the differencebetween an atom of another, therefore thenumber of protons.

Are ordered increasingly forming theperiodic table of elements.

Each element has a name and isrepresented by a symbol composed of one

or two letters. The first is capitalized andthe second is always lowercase.

The atoms are arraged in substances of differenttypes:

Isolated atoms: inert gases (not react).

Molecules: binding of two or more atoms.Simple substances: molecules of identical atoms.Complex substances: molecules of differentatoms.Crystals: union of many atoms, forming strongassociations of both simple substances (carbon,gold) and compound (salt).

Formula: A chemical formula is a way torepresent the substance. They write the symbolsof all elements with subscripts indicating thenumber of atoms of each class.Molecules:

Simple substances: O2

Complex substances: H20.

Crystals:Elements: CCrystal compounds: FeS2
