Chemical Clean - successful completion

The successful completion of the Chemical Clean phase of the Unit 6 Boiler marks yet another noteworthy achievement for the Project. Chemical clean was achieved ahead of schedule and the Project is steadily progressing towards its next key milestone, i.e. Draught Group Test run. The Unit 6 Boiler was neutralized by use of lime processing. The Boiler was drained, permanent piping and equipment re-instatement commenced.

Commissioning is progressing steadily towards 1st Syncronization of Medupi Unit 6

The Water Treatment Plant Laboratory HVAC is complete in readiness for installation of the Bench Analysers by Siemens.

SER Site Integration Test was completed. BOP/ PI6 Site Integration Test commenced on 25 August 2014.

Construction Update

Fabrication and installation of Steam Air Heater Condensate piping is complete.

Condensate System piping - Alstom’s subcontractor Kentz has mobilised at the ACCCT building and delivery of materials for the condensate system commenced.

Wind crosses - erection of the wind cross steel structure has commenced.

LP1 and LP2 Turbine cross over pipes have been erected into their final positions.

Site Acceptance Test on the 220V DC Board 1& 2 is progressing very well.

The Demin system for Unit 5 passed hydrostatic testing and is ready for safety clearence.

Unit 4

Progress on the Condensate Reserve Tank civil works in preparation for access to Alstom to commence mechanical works is as per the Last Planner Pull Plan. The tank foundation ring was poured, shutters stripped and post repairs are in progress.

Mills 30 & 40 base pocket repairs have been signed off and access given to Hitachi to commence with the mechanical erection of the Mills.

Unit 3

20.6 m level concrete slabs were poured and are now curing. Once cured, Hitachi is planning to commence with the structural steelwork and roof sheeting.

Staircase No 5 concrete work is complete. This will provide a secondary access point which will enhance safer acces to working areas.

The Pulse Jet Fabric Filter Plant slab has been inspected after intensive crack repair work and 50% of the area has been handed over to Hitachi to commence with the mechanical erection of the plant.

UNIT 4 & 3

Construction Update

Unit 1 boiler roof is being prepared for loading onto the 105 meter grid, prior to jacking.

The last ACC column has the yellow edge protection installed ahead of fan deck steel frame construction.

UNIT 2 & 1

The concrete poured to date on Medupi Power Station Site is in the order of 640,000 cubic meters. Compare this to if they had to remove the few remaining Blue Bulls supporters and filled Loftus Rugby Field with 640,000 cubes it would have filled up completely and the concrete would already have started overflowing over the roof of the Northern stand! The steel reinforcement of the concrete is in the order of 80,000 tons. If the 80,000 tons of reinforcing steel had been used instead for building motor cars, then, at an average of one ton steel needed per car, 80,000 cars could have been built. 80,000 Motor cars at an average length of 4,5meters would total 360km if parked bumper to bumper. Almost exactly all the way from OR Tambo Airport to Medupi.
