every year, the Festival will acknowledge andpay tribute to great filmmakers. In 2019 we areproud to honour Mike Leigh by featuring two ofhis early films, selected by their director himself, who will attend the screenings.

Mike Leigh is a director with a highly distinctivevoice. Starting in television and stage drama,he moved confidently into feature films, producing a string of comedies, contemporarydramas and, more recently, period pieces.

Leigh (born 1943) has always had his ownunique process: actors improvise in characterfor days or weeks before he writes a shootingscript. In this way he has secured the loyaltyof the cream of the British acting profession.

The director will be introducing two of hisearliest films: BleakMoments, based on astage play of 1970; and the comedy NutsinMay,produced for BBC Tv in 1976. In the latter partof the 1980s Leigh turned decisively to cinema, with a series of mainly domestic comedies anddramas, including HighHopes, LifeisSweet,Secrets&Lies, Naked and Happy-Go-Lucky.More recently he has embraced history andbiography, with Topsy-Turvy (about Gilbertand Sullivan), Mr Turner (about the painterJMW Turner) and Peterloo (about the PeterlooMassacre of 1819).

The history of cinema in Poland is almost aslong as the history of cinematography. RomanPolanski, Andrzej Wajda, Krzysztof Zanussi,Krzysztof Kieślowski, Agnieszka Hollandand more recently Pawel Pawlikowski, director of Ida and ColdWar, head a list ofgreat Polish directors; many of whom aregraduates of the world famous nationalFilm School in Łódź, Poland.

Going back more than a century the first cinemain Poland was founded in Łódź in 1899. By theend of the next decade there were cinemasin almost every major town in Poland. Movingon a few years, Poland had its first film star,Pola Negri, the femme fatale of silent cinema.

Hollywood can also trace its roots to Poland, where many of the Hollywood film mogulscame from: Samuel Goldwyn and Louis BMayer, MGM, Jack Warner, Warner Brothersand Joseph Schenck, 20th Century Fox,Polish Jews who came to the new worldand created a dream empire.

Today, Poland is giving the world a newwave of directors, who have achieved criticalacclaim and who will make their mark foryears to come. We are proud to introduce tothe Festival the work of Jan Komasa, LukaszGrzegorzek and Malgorzata Szumowksa, one of the growing number of women directorsfrom Poland making their mark.

HEAdS UPPOLISH FILM SEASON

The Cheltenham International Film Festivalannounces its Women in Film seasonsponsored by the Cheltenham Film Society –one of the oldest film societies in the country.

Women in Film is a theme the Festival willcontinue to expand as women filmmakerscontinue to make films of significance thatdeserve a wide audience.

In 2019 and with the welcome support of theCheltenham Film Society, we have the pleasureto screen women directors who are emergingas new talents, who have won praise and criticalacclaim and, in the case of celebrated theatredirector Josie Rourke, who have scaled theheights in other areas of entertainment. Thisyear’s Women in Film include: Capernaum, the Oscar-nominated film, directed by

Nadine Labaki, who also picked up theJury Prize at Cannes Film Festival; HappyasLazzaro, which won Best Screenplay atCannes, directed by Alice Rohrwacher; Polina,a French-Russian co-production directed byAngelin Preljocaj and valérie Müller; thePolish film, Mug, winner of the Jury Grand Prixat Berlin International Film Festival; andMaryQueenofScots, director Josie Rourke.

WOMEN IN FILM

F-RATEdThe F-Rating originated byFilmBath at the 2014 Bath FilmFestival and really grabbed publicattention. There are now over 80cinemas and film festivals in theUK and around the world which F-Rate their programme, includingthe Barbican, Raindance Festivaland the Irish Film Institute.

The F-Rating applies to all filmswhich are directed and/or writtenby women. If in addition to bothof these the film also prominentlyfeatures women in their own right, then it is Triple F-Rated – thegold standard.

Look out for thelogo throughoutthe programme.

TRIBUTE TO MIKE LEIGH
