    Downtown Chelseas Sounds &Sights Festival kicks off tonight

    with a host of live entertainmentand fun for the whole family.

    The July 26-28 event begins at6 p.m. with a New Orleans-style paradefrom the Depot to the Library with Creoledu Nord leading the way. Musical actsstart playing around town at 6:30 p.m. andmain stage performers will begin 7 p.m.for indie music night and end at 11 p.m.

    Now in its 37th year, the festival week-end features many of the popular attrac-tions from previous years, including theKidzone, the Friday night Classic CarShow, the Pet Parade and the Social &Entertainment Tent. The festival will alsofeature an expanded foot court area andthe art market, which is now in its secondseason and showcases talented artistsfrom across the Midwest.

    At the heart of the Sounds & Sights

    Festival is the nightly entertainment line-up, and the headliners this year include:The Hard Lessons playing on the openingnight in the social tent, which opens at 6p.m., for indie music night; and WhiteyMorgan and Blue River Band performingcountry on Friday night.

    The social tent opens early on Saturdayat 1 p.m. with acts performing from 2-5p.m. and 7-11 p.m.

    Billy Mack & The Juke Joint Johnniesand Fifty Amp Fuse will close out thefestivals Social & Entertainment TentSaturday night. Admission to the tent onSaturday is free for the afternoon perfor-mances.

    This is the best lineup weve hadsince I have been involved, said CraigCommon,Festival committee member andowner of the Common Grill. The event

    has a very strong reputation in the musiccircles and our entertainment guru Gary

    Munce has done a great job of bookingtop-notch talent each night ... and its only$5 to see them.

    We open with indie bands on Thursdaywith some great local acts, come back withtwo well-known country acts on Fridaynight and close with a big dance partySaturday with one of the countrys bestcover bands - Fifty Amp Fuse.

    The festivals main stage is within theSocial & Entertainment Tent, located justbehind the Common Grill and opens at6 p.m. with live music until 11 p.m. withbeer, wine, water and soft drinks for sale.There is a $5 cover each night, with theexception of Saturday afternoon, and allages are welcome.

    The KidZone will feature day-longactivities and attractions both Friday andSaturday including kids entertainment,

    face painting, jugglers and clowns, a crafttent and Teddy Bear Factory tours. Thehuge classic car returns Friday night withover 300 retro vehicles expected from 3-8p.m.

    Other activities scheduled during theevent include a chicken barbecue, a farm-ers market, artist demonstrations, side-walk sales and more.

    The festival runs until July 28 and issponsored by the Chelsea DowntownDevelopment Authority, Jif fy Mixes,Chelsea State Bank, Chelsea CommunityHospital, The Common Grill, EdwardJones, KeyBank, Clearys Pub, Lake TrustCredit Union, and Washtenaw CountyParks & Recreation.

    The Chelsea DowntownDevelopment Authorityauthorized a study on July19 to determine whetherto demolish the DanielsShowroom, part of the

    Longworth property, com-prised of three buildingsjust south of the traintracks on Main Street in thedowntown area.

    The study will be con-ducted at the state level byState Historic PreservationOffice, which will determinewhether the DDA can demol-ish the building withoutlosing historic value to theLongworth site.

    The DDAs plan to poten-tially remove the showroomwould include restoring thefacade of the attached build-ing, often called The Mack,and installing a pocket parkin place of the showroom.

    The DDAs proposed plancomes off the heels of theDDAs fallout with a teamof developers, called the110 Longworth BuildingDevelopment Company,

    The Chelsea DowntownDevelopment Authorityvoted to accept a bid for itsMain Street streetscape proj-ect but will delay the con-struction until next spring.

    The streetscape projectwill include replacing fivecrosswalks and adding trees,lighting and curb bump-outsalong Main Street from VanBuren Street to the corner

    of Main and North streets.City Manager John

    Hanifan suggested that theconstruction be held offuntil the spring because ofthe amount of construc-tion already happening inChelsea.
