CHELSEA Former52nd District HouseRepresentative Pam Byrnesannounced today that sheis making a return to poli-tics this time vying forU.S. Representative TimWalbergs 7th congressio-nal district seat.

Byrnes last attempt atwinning a seat in govern-ment involved her run forformer State Senator LizBraters job represent-

ing the 18thDistrict. Shelost to RebekahWarren (D-AnnArbor) 55-41percent.

Byrnes beganbuilding herpolitical careerin Washtenawby serving onthe WashtenawCounty Road Commissionand other local governmen-tal bodies and committeesbefore making the plungeinto state-level politics as

the winning candi-date for District 52of the state House inthe 2004 election.

She held onto herseat in 2006 and 2008,which meant thatshe was term-limitedout of the House.Byrnes expressed adesire to continuerepresenting the

Michigan public in state-level politics, which meantshe and the voters wouldhave to graduate her tothe state Senate, as some

politicians refer to it inthe circumstances that shewas in.

In the interim periodbetween Warrens defeatand now, she has worked asexecutive director for theUniversity of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao TonUniversity Joint Institute

a program that fosterscollaboration in both educa-tion and research betweenengineering students ofboth universities. ShanghaiJiao Tong represents itselfas one of Chinas premier

that while she was serv-ing in her capacity at the

joint institute creating thestructure based on west-ern management styles atthe fledgling organizationthat was created in 2006,she gained a great deal ofexperience and perspectivethat she wants to bring toU.S. Congress ideas thatshe feels are imperative tothe well-being of Michigan

Havens achieved her dreambefore passing away fromcancer Sunday morningwhen she opened Glee Cake& Pastry in November 2011

and in that, she waslucky.

Lucky is what manyprominent figures in theChelsea community consid-ered themselves for know-ing the 52-year-old executivepastry chef who elevatedher craft to a level wherewords like art and exqui-site are not uncommon tohear.

She was vivacious,energetic and charis-matic shes just a spunkylittle thing, reflected LisaDelong, who took overHavens beloved sweetsshop.

Havens, of Stockbridge,originally came fromupstate New York, beforepursuing a degree ineconomics at the StateUniversity of New York/University of Buffalo andstudying at the BaltimoreCulinary Institute, whereshe graduated with tophonors.

Havens trained underfamous Austrian Chef JanBandula, who worked asa pastry chef at the White

House during the admin-istration of former U.S.President Jimmy Carter.

She served as executivepastry chef at the OmniHotel & Convention Center

the biggest facility inMaryland and cultivateda regional and even inter-

state reputation in theworlds of hospitality andgourmet retail.

Delong says she was morethan happy to help Havens

husband Steve and theHavens family as a wholeby handling Glees businessin her stead, having herselfdealt with the circum-stances of having a closeloved one contend with andsuccumb to cancer.

In January, I lost myuncle to lung cancer and hewas my mentor as a pastrychef, Delong said. Sowhen (the Havens) askedme to help out and told mewhat the situation was, itwasnt even a question ofwhether or not I would doit it was, When do youneed me to start?

Havens was an enthusias-

tic member of the Chelseabusiness community, whichextended her renown intothe broader public commu-nity as a whole.

fter the start of Youth DanceTheaters upcoming 2013-14 sea-son on Aug. 18, the 16-year-oldnon-profit ballet company will

take on the name Ballet Chelseafor a number of reasons.

The change is necessary to moreaccurately reflect the focus of our or-ganization, says YDT/Ballet ChelseaPresident Jane Thompson.

Youth Dance Theater has grown a

great deal since its start as an adjunctprogram of a local dance studio. Theidea involved offering training and edu-cational opportunities in ballet to kidswho were too far away from ballet train-ing and education living in the Chelseaarea and western Washtenaw.

It was determined at the organiza-tions yearly strategic planning meetingthis year that in order to continue togrow, a new name and some new addi-tions to the YDT program were in order,according to Marketing CoordinatorPatricia Marsh.

One of our goals is to grow our orga-nization in terms of membership, audi-ence and patronage, Marsh said. Wealso want to offer more performances,so we contacted community leaders
