The caves were constructed between 1995 and 2002. There are over 34,000 sq.ft of tunnels, used primarily for barrel storage and wine aging, and on a limited basis for special events.

The hillside in which the caves are bored consists primarily of dense, stable, basalt rock. Because of its density and stability, the hillside is an ideal strata in which to house the cave network and its priceless contents.

The structure that acts as a gateway to the portals leading into the tunnels from the south is referred to as the arcade. The arcade is constructed of pre-formed concrete arches finished with a rammed earth technique known as pneumatically installed stabilized earth, or "pise". The rocky façade of the hillside exposed under the arcade is held in place with a fabric of copper wire screen secured to the rocks with huge steel rock anchors capped by decorative iron stars and moons.

At the center of the cave network is the round room, which houses one of only about fifty foucault pendulums in existence in the world. The pendulum consists of a 235 pounds hollow ball of polished cast brass suspended from the domed ceiling of the round room by a cable.

The floor of the round room is constructed of slabs of colored quartzite that represent a bird's–eye view of the patchwork landscape seen from high above; the walls are coated with plaster infused with feldspar to make it sparkle like a starry sky; the wall sconces are in the form of a meteor shower, to celebrate celestial light and give the impression of movement.

There are five doorways or "portals" into the cave. Each portal consists of a pair of doors constructed from old–growth redwood staves salvaged from wine tanks. The wood is clad onto steel frames, and each door was handcrafted on site by an old world craftsman, portuguese carpenter manny medeiros, without the use of engineering or architectural drawings.

Just inside the cave entrance from the great room is a cast bronze sculpture of a mother bear and her cub, perched on a collection of wine casks and sleepily guarding the cave tunnels beyond. The sculpture was created by renowned napa artist larry shank.
