Cheer, Dance and Drill Competition and YS EXPO Youth Services department hosted their 1 st Cheer, Dance and Drill Competition at Edward Roybal Learning Center for the Elementary, Middle and High school afterschool programs. It was an amazing and memorable event for many students as it was their first dance, drill, and cheer competition. For some it was their last competition before exiting high school. Just imagine yourself performing in front of an audience of 550 parents, family members, friends, and school administrators. The event was a huge success as all participants had the support of everyone in the facility. Prior to the competition students had been preparing for this day as early as October 2010 and others as of January 2011. All participants practiced 2-3 days per week for about 2 hours each day afterschool to prepare for this day along with their dedicated, creative, and passionate Coaches. The day began with butterflies in their stomachs as participants were preparing to take the floor to perform and compete for the 1 st place trophy. It also began with cheers, smiles, and support from other teams, parents, friends and school administrators. Prior to the competition students had been preparing for this day as early as October 2010 and

Regardless of their placement each school left with the motivation to perfect their craft for next

year’s Y.S Cheer, Dance and Drill Competition.

Nancy Arias, Enrichment Project Specialist, coordinated this event to provide students the

opportunity to compete in a friendly competition where their hard work, creativity, and

dedication would be acknowledged, win or lose by their loved ones and community members.

This competition embodied the true spirit of self expression for the students while it captured the

hearts of the audience that cheered them on. It has been said that, “Any form of dance is an

opportunity for students to express themselves and an outlet to be who they are.” This

competition accomplished just that.

On May 14, 2011, the Youth Services Department hosted the 2nd

Annual Y.S Expo event

at Edward Roybal Learning Center. The YS Expo allowed 21st Century Kids and Rock on

Education students to showcase their self expression, athletic abilities, and academic

achievement while empowering parents to be advocates within the school community. 500

participants engaged in the various arts and crafts, trivia and recreational games, soccer

tournament, and college workshops. Collaborative community partners such as Cal State

University of Northridge, UC Berkeley, Best Buy, and other YPI departments attended the event

and offered an array of activities to our students and parents.

In addition, students from Fenton Elementary, L.A Leadership Academy Charter HS,

College Ready 7 Academy HS, and Wallis Annenberg Charter HS performed at the YS EXPO

concert where students and parents enjoyed every minute of it. Many parents sang along with

L.A Leadership Band performance of “We Belong Together” by Richie Valens and many

students to Wallis Annenberg High School Band, “Island in the Sun” by Weezer.

Many students and parents left with memorabilia they created or items that were given to them

but most important they all left with smiles and urge to come again next year.
