1. Define your PURPOSE.

Hint: Make your customers, or peoplein general, your company's PURPOSE.

Our CEO Scott Peper found he wasmost happy when he was doing theright thing and helping others in theprocess. Scott knew he wanted acompany that allowed him to do that.

t all starts with you, fearless leader. What do you want to be known for inthe industry? Who do you want to be seen as, bothat work and at home? This is your purpose. Ideally, yourpurpose should align with why youstarted your business or what it is yourbusiness is on the earth to do.

What does that look like? We answer the phone ourselves, ratherthan installing an automated service. We help every person who comes to usto the best of our ability, whether theyneed our product or not. We dedicatetime to community service. We havecompany-wide charity initiatives. Wecelebrate the ways each of us givesmore and gives back. And it is working. We have a successful business, a fullpipeline, and we all get to enjoy workthat makes us proud.

I He made “helping those we come incontact with” the PURPOSE of ourcompany, and that unifyingphilosophy — we are here to help —drives our business strategy.

Know your VALUES.2.

Sit down with your leadership teamand, based on your Purpose, decidewhat you as a company collectivelystand for. It’s okay to be aspirationalhere, but don’t kid yourself. If youwant to be known as upfront andhonest 100% of the time, you and yourentire team are going to have to livethat credo. Don’t expect your team tocome up with your CORE VALUES oreven agree with them all.

very company lives by a set ofvalues, even if you’ve never paidattention to them. The trouble is, ifyou’ve never given much thought toyour company’s values, they may bedoing more harm than good to yourpotential growth.

Don’t just put your core values in amemo or on your website. Live themevery day. Use them in companydialogue. Reward others when theydemonstrate a core value. Over time, your values will become part of yourreputation in the industry, and a driverof repeat business.

E These core values are what you wantyour company to stand for and bedriven by. Don’t be surprised ifeveryone in the room isn’t there yet, orif everyone in the room even belongsonce you define them!

Set your GOALS.3.

verybody sets financial goals fortheir business (at least, we certainlyHOPE you do). But, is the money thegoal, or does it facilitate the goal?Growing your business from $1 millionto $5 million will change yourbusiness, but it won’t fundamentallychange your team or your life if youdon’t have a purpose to be driven by.  It may even highlight problems orsituations you need to fix.  Yourpurpose and culture is what will keepthe company grounded and strong soyou can grow and manage throughthose problems. If you feel overworkedand unfulfilled, having more moneywon’t change that.

Purpose-driven goals give your teamsomething to sink their teeth into, something to believe in and rallybehind. We’re working our buttsoff because reaching this financial goalmeans we get the thing we all agreewe want.

E You need to set a GOAL defined byyour Purpose. Set a financial Goal that,by reaching it, makes you able to fulfillyour Purpose. A purpose-driven goal ismore effective at aligning your entireteam, getting everyone on the samepage and working toward the sameend result.

pecific. Your goal needs to be easy to communicate and understand.Otherwise, it will fail to motivate your team.

easurable. You need to be able to measure your progress. Withoutmeasurement, your team can lose momentum.

chievable. Your goal needs to be big enough to incorporate your team’s goals, too. Aim high, and take the long view. You may not reach the moon tomorrow, butyou can get there if your entire team has aligned goals to build the rocket andchart the stars.

elevant. This is where purpose comes in. What will it mean to reach your goal? How is it going to change your business, the lives of your employees, and yourown life?

ime-based. There has to be a finish line that you and your team can racetoward.

Lastly, make sure your goals are SMART.S

4. Create a ROADMAP.

Your strategic roadmap should be avisual illustration of how everyone’srole within the company works towardachieving the Goal and fulfilling thePurpose. Outline the roles in yourorganization, the strategies and tacticseach role will utilize, and how thoseefforts will move the needle towardGoal completion.

ou know your Purpose and yourGoal. Now, how are you goingto get there? Woe to the businessowner who launches ambitious goalswith no clear plan on how to achievethem. It can mean more than failure; itcan leave your team feeling confused, frustrated, or misled. To help youcreate a plan your entire crew can getbehind, think of it as a ROADMAP.

To implement the change and achieveyour goals you will need to reinforcethe message, goal, and the roadmapevery day and incorporate it into justabout everything you do. Your teamwill need to know how the goalsimpact what they do and how they willdrive their success – in their rolewithin the company and for themindividually.

Don’t forget a few rest areas andscenic views along the way. Identifythe most crucial milestones towardyour goal, and make a plan tocelebrate when you reach them. Thismeans set milestone goals along theway that you can track progresstowards!  Create a scoreboard or ameasuring tool that shows all what hasbeen accomplished at any time theywant to see it.

5. Rally the TEAM.

It’s important to take the time toexplain in a group and individuallyhow each member of the teamimpacts the goal. This is anopportunity for your team to offerfeedback as well. Do they feel differently about yourcompany’s values?

hances are your team is alreadyaware of your Built for Growth missionby this point, but now comes the timefor the pep rally. Get your entire TEAMtogether and share your Purpose, yourGoals, and the Roadmap to achievethe Goal.

C Are their opinions a reflection of whereyou ARE as a company, not necessarilywhere you want to be? You also need to clearly identify thereward for reaching the goal. Give theteam something to unite behind. Ifyour Purpose is to “Build and serve ourcommunity with integrity and faith,”then you might choose acommunity charity to donate to (if andwhen!) your team reaches the goal.

6. Clean your HOUSE.

hat is standing in the way of yourPurpose, Values, and Goal? Is it a mountain of paperwork? Get itdone. Is it a labyrinth of inefficientprocesses? Get your team together totear them down and build new ones. Abad apple or two ruining the newvalues-driven vibe around the shop?Sit them down and tell them the deal:We all swim or we all drown, soconsider this your life-line. We can’t let you drag us all down.

W Does that sound harsh? It is, but protecting your company’sfuture is THAT important. An employee who wants to cutcorners, mislead or outright lie, orblow their top at customers is going tocost you more than they produce inthe long run.

We all swim

or we all drown...

7. Constantly assess your PROGRESS.

reating a Built for Growth companyis not an end-goal — it is a disciplinethat must be maintained daily. Thatmeans regular communication withyour team on what is, and what isn’t,working.

C If something goes wrong, make sureeveryone knows there’s no time for theblame game. Challenges will arise, what matters ishow you overcome them.

The journey startsand ends withYOU.Set out every day to be a little bitbetter than you were the day before.Invest in your own leadership andcommunication skills.

Are you a happier and morefulfilled person than youwere yesterday? Chances are you are on the right path.
