Abstract

The parasites found in 185 host species, including 122 fishes, at Heron Island and adjacent reefs in the Capricorn-Bunker group are listed. Parasites are identified to family or below. Many of the 580 records have not previously been published; the present location of these specimens is given.

Introduction

Heron Island is a coral cay at 23"27'S.,151°55'E., on the Great Barrier Reef. Rohde (1976~) estimated that over 20 000 species of parasites occur in fish near Heron I., although fewer than 200 have been reported from the whole of the Great Barrier Reef (Beumer et al. 1982). The Sixth International Congress of Parasitology held at Brisbane, Queensland, in 1986 brought together taxonomic experts on many parasite groups and provided the opportunity to hold a week-long workshop at the Heron Island Research Station. The workshop was funded by grants from the Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS) and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA). ABRS requested that all parasites found be identified at least to family. Each workshop participant agreed to prepare for publication a manuscript describing material found. Thirteen of these papers are included in this issue.

The checklist includes published and unpublished records of parasites from Heron I. and adjacent reefs in the Capricorn-Bunker group. Unpublished records are followed by the initials of the person who either has the specimen or who can provide further details. Not included in the checklist are animals which form loose associations with other animals, such as clown fish and anemones, shrimps and blennies, or other symbionts not normally studied by parasitologists, such as zooxanthellae.

Fish hosts are listed first. Following these are other vertebrate hosts then invertebrate hosts. Names used follow Russell (1983) for fish and Clark and Rowe (1971) for crinoids, asteroids and holothurians. The list concludes with an index to the parasites.

Each entry in the checklist has the following format:

34. Echeneis naucrates Linnaeus, 1758 MON Dionchus remorae (MacCallum, 1916). Gills. Young (1970), MBB, AW, KR.

The '34 Echeneis naucrates Linnaeus, 1758', refers to the host number, host species name and authority. Host species authorities are not included in the References. Within each host family, host species are listed alphabetically by genus.

'MON' refers to the higher parasite taxon to which the parasite belongs. The code for parasite taxa is: PRO, Protista; ASP, Aspidogastrea; TUR, Turbellaria; DIG, Digenea; MON, Monogenea; CES, Cestoda; NEM, Nematoda; ACA, Acanthocephala; COP, Copepoda; DEC, Decapoda; ISO, Isopoda; HIR, Hirudinea; ARA, Arachnida; GAS, Gastropoda; POL, Polychaeta. For Digenea, the family is also given because of the large number of genera in this subclass.

'Dionchus rernorae (MacCallum, 1916)' is the parasite species found and its authority. Authorities are given only for species and are not listed in the References unless the paper contains a record from the Capricorn-Bunker Group. Only the first published record of the parasite from the Capricorn-Bunker Group is included.

'Gills' refers to the location, where known, of the parasite on or in the host. 'Young (1970)' is the author and date of a published paper which records the parasite

from the Capricorn-Bunker Group. The publication date in parentheses distinguishes it from the species authority. Where the locality record is included in the original species description, no additional reference is given.

'MBB, AW, KR' are the initials of people who have specimens or who can provide further details (see key below). Where a named species of parasite is recorded for the first time from a new host, the worker's initials are followed by '(N. rec.)'.
