    CHECKLIST FOR MINIMISING DNA CONTAMINATION OF THE

    SEXUAL ASSAULT EXAMINATION ROOM AT THE

    LAUNCESTON GENERAL HOSPITAL : attach 2 Policy9.5-11WACS

    STANDARD OF PRACTICE CHECKLISTHealth care practitioners will follow the following procedures when conducting a forensic

    medical examination.

    The technical checklist will be completed for every case. Please tick boxes when completed.

    Prior to examination:

    1 Check hospital cleaning log book for status

    2 Wearing gloves, mask and goggles, and using designated cleaning fluid

    and disposable wipe:

    a) Clean examination tableb) Clean patient chairsc) Clean bench/trolley topd) Wipe your pen or use new pene) Clean light source and any areas that could come in contact

    with biological fluids

    3 Linen:

    a) Cover examination table with a clean sheetb) Cover pillow with new pillow casec) Obtain clean blanket or sheet to cover patientd) Place a sterile pack down to designate specimen collection

    space on trolley.

    During the examination:

    1. Bring patient into clinical examination room to commence the medical forensicexamination.

    2. Glove, gown and mask prior to commencing, explaining why to client.3. Select from the secure storage cupboard the range of items that you may use for the

    examination. If during the examination you require more items that you initially

    selected, you must remove your apron and gloves before returning to the lockedcupboard. Wash hands and retrieve the items, put on a new apron and gloves before

    recommencing the examination.

    4. After selection of equipment (whilst still gloved and gowned) commence the physicalexamination.

    5. Separate new clean gloves should be used for each of the following components of theFME.

    a) Processing of specimensb) Body examinationc) Genital examinationd) Collection of specimens that may leave reside on gloves (ie blood, semen on

    body, paint, debris etc).e) Selecting more equipment from the secure storage cupboard.

    Post examination:

    1. Dispose of all disposable items that you selected and didnt use at the time of theexamination. They should be disposed of in either the rubbish bin or sharps container.

    2. Ensure there are no specimens or equipment left at the conclusion of the examination3. Remove bed linen and place in linen basket.4. Remove rubbish bins and linen bags from examination room and replace same unless

    cleaning staff available to do so.

    5. Using designated cleaning fluid and a disposable wipe:a) Clean examination tableb) Clean patient chairsc) Clean bench/trolley topd) Wipe down any other non-disposable equipment you have used eg. light

    source/ sphygmomanometer, stethoscope etc

    6. Enter into log book that room used, cleaned, date, time and name of examiner.

    UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE SHOULD A FORENSIC MEDICAL

    EXAMINATION BE CONDUCTED IF THE FACILITIES OR EQUIPMENT ARE

    COMPROMISED IN ANY WAY. WHERE THE CHECKLIST CAN NOT BE

    COMPLETED A FULL EXPLANATION SHOULD BE WRITTEN NEXT TO

    THE ITEM.
