Spring

Mist is a trusting girl, to say the least. She’s given you a house, a fi eld, farming tools, and you’ve known her for about fi ve minutes. Don’t let her down! Part of your job in this game is to turn that run down house and fi eld into a very profi table farm.

Fill the watering can with a source of water, and you can water twelve squares of dirt before your next refi ll. This is the fi rst tool you want to focus on upgrading.

MEET MIST

FIRST BATTLE

Once you’ve tilled a dirt tile with the Hoe, weeds and debris stop spawning there. Better yet, you can grow seeds in tilled ground with just a little bit of water every day.

You will have your fi rst taste of combat when an Orc unexpectedly spawns in your fi eld. You can fi ght the enemy off successfully with your Hoe, but pick your blows carefully. The Hoe is a very slow-swinging weapon, and once the Orc starts an attack animation you can’t interrupt it. It’s best to Dash when the Orc attacks, and hit it quickly from behind.

When the time comes to enter dungeons and fi ght more monsters, you should make sure that you have purchased a proper weapon. Fighting with tools is a slow and tedious business, since they don’t have combo chains and do poor damage.

CLEAR AND TILL

First, walk all over your enormous fi eld and work on clearing out the weeds and debris. Although the game explains how to simply chuck garbage away by tossing it outside of your fi eld, DON’T DO THIS. Although it may not look like it, almost all of the junk spawning in your fi eld is valuable except for the basic Weeds. Everything else you should stick in your backpack, except for the branches. Leave those lying on the ground for now.

Eventually, you should be able to clear out enough dirt that it’ll be worth it to break out the Hoe and start tilling the 100 squares. Try to keep the area that you till organized into nine-square fi elds that you can eventually plant seeds in. You probably won’t be able to get to all 100 tiles before your RP runs out.

Plant the Radish seeds that Mist comes by to give you at noon if you still have the energy for it. Don’t push yourself, though. Once your RP and HP are run down, you’re basically done with work for Day 1.

DON’T TILL EVERYTHINGThe dirt patch Mist gives you is enormous—15 by 27 tiles, for a total of 405 tiles of dirt in all! It will be a long time before you can even come close to using all of that ground, so don’t bother tilling it right now. It’s much better to till the twelve fi elds required to advance the plot, and let the rest of it run wild. The random plants and debris that spawn on your dirt every morning are more useful to you right now than a bunch of tilled soil that you can’t afford to plant yet.

STUFF TO KEEP

Feel free to sell or trash everything else, but these items are so valuable you don’t want to waste even a single one if you can help it.

BRANCHES: You don’t want to put these in the Shipping Box. Instead, just ignore them until you get the Axe on Day 2. Once you have an Axe, you can start chopping up branches to generate Wood, which is one of the most important resources in the game.

ANTIDOTAL HERB: Eventually you’ll need stacks of these. Eat an Antidotal Herb to remove Poison status. Dr. Edward sells them for 60g each, but why pay for something you can get for free? You may end up fi nding so many that you may have to sell them off to make space in your backpack.

MEDICINAL HERB: You can use these to get Dr. Edward to brew up Recovery Potions, or just eat them to restore 10 HP. The good Dr. Edward sells them for 100g each, so the ones that grow wild in your fi eld are a bargain.

GRASSES: They come in a variety of colors in Spring, but eating any of them restores 7 HP. Keeping stacks of this around can save your life in a pinch.

BAMBOO SPROUT: Restores 15 HP when eaten. These don’t spawn as quickly as Grasses or Medicinal Herbs, but can also be handy as a quick source of HP when you’re in trouble.

OBSTACLES?You’ll notice there’s some stuff you just can’t clear out of your fi eld right now: Stumps, and the two larger sizes of rocks. Getting rid of this stuff is going to require upgraded, more powerful tools. You’ll eventually be able to take out Stumps with an upgraded Axe. Larger rocks require an upgraded Hammer.

MEET AND GREET

Once you’ve exhausted your strength on Day 1 (and it’ll probably be pretty early in the day), go into town and start wandering around. It’s a Holiday, so most of the shops are closed, but you should be able to trigger four of the introductory cutscenes that introduce you to the townspeople by just wandering around town. This activity sets up some events that you want to happen on Day 2. When you’re done with this, just go to bed. Raguna has a big day tomorrow.

DAILY ROUTINE Get in the habit of walking over to your fi eld and performing your various upkeep chores fi rst thing after you wake up. Once your farm has expanded, this can easily kill the three in-game hours between your wake-up time and 9 AM, when most of the shops in town open.

UNEXPECTED VISIT

Day 2 begins when Kardia’s wealthy gourmand, Jasper, and his spoiled daughter Bianca show up to check out your house. They don’t seem to think much of it right now, but you’re just getting started.

AXE A SILLY QUESTION

Once it’s 9 AM, head into town. Enter Jasper’s mansion and have a conversation with Bianca. She’ll summon her maid, Tabatha, who’ll hand over the Cheap Axe. Now you can convert your branches into Wood! Maybe Bianca isn’t so bad after all.

CHEAP AXE

What you use the Axe for is obvious enough by now. However, your Axe isn’t good enough for you to chop up the giant Stumps in your fi eld. You’ll have to upgrade it, and you can’t do that until you have the Hammer.

GONE FISHIN’ Head toward the beach in Kardia (just to right, toward the edge of the screen, and keep going). Step out to the edge of the pier next to Sabrina’s shack. Sabrina appears and hands over the Fishing Rod.

CHEAP ROD

The Fishing Rod isn’t required to advance in the plot, but you’ll be glad to have it. Fish are a good source of fast cash early in the game, and later on you’ll be able to use them in recipes.

To use it, just walk up to a body of water with the Rod equipped and press B to cast. When a fi sh is biting, you’ll see the line go taut and hear a particular sound effect. Press the B button to reel the fi sh in.

Any time you have an hour or so before a shop opens, you should head out to the docks and catch some fi sh to pass the time away.

SICKLE MOON

Go talk to Rosetta at Jean’s general store and get the Sickle tool.

You won’t use the Sickle much until you experience your fi rst sea-sonal transition. In the meantime, just remember that it obliterates any weed you swing it at. It also lets you rip up re-growing crops and harvest monster feed.

SOCIAL NETWORKING

Now that it’s a weekday, most of the shops in Kardia will be open. Enter every shop you can and talk to everyone you meet. This should trigger the last eight of the introductory cutscenes. Remember that the Pub doesn’t open until noon, and Melody’s bath house doesn’t open until 3 PM.

Now that you’ve got some basic tools, it’s time to spend the next few days making cash. After you fi nish tending your fi elds each day, spend the rest of your time fi shing at the beach. Take baths to extend your HP and RP, so you can get more done in a day.

A single day’s fi shing should be enough to make you about 2000g. Take this money up to Jean’s store so you can purchase seeds for the crop that makes your real money over the season: strawberries.

The seeds are expensive, but try to get roughly four to six packages. Less won’t make enough money for you, and more will be very time-consuming to care for. Plant the seeds you can afford and spend the next few days tending them, using money from fi shing to tide you over and cover expenses until your fi rst crops are ready to harvest.

MAKE MONEY

Strawberries

Strawberries are possibly the single most profi table crop in the game, and the main thing you want to plant in your fi eld right now. Strawberries sell for 200g apiece, and have a re-growth period of two days. This means that once you get your fi rst crop about nine days after fi rst planting, the remaining vines will sprout a fresh crop of Strawberries roughly every other day until the season ends and the vines die.

GET EQUIPPED

Around Day 4 or so, your fi shing profi ts should be enough to let you scrape together the 2000g it takes to purchase the Broadsword and Small Shield. If not, just keep grinding cash from fi sh and crops until you have the money you need.

SMALL SHIELD

Its +3 defense bonus is modest, but you are low-level and somewhat squishy. You need all the help you can get surviving in a dungeon.

BROADSWORD

It seems to be the weakest weapon Leo’s shop offers, but its fast attack speed and three-hit combo make it perfect for a beginning explorer. If you don’t do well with it, you may want to save up money for a more powerful Claymore or Spear, but the Broadsword can easily get you through Carmite Cave.

TICKET TO FIGHT You’ll notice that there is a cave to the southeast of your farm. If you try to enter it, you will be denied. You need a pass to enter, so head into town and pay Mayor Godwin a visit.

By tilling at least 100 squares of your land, you’ve proven that you’re a successful farmer. Mayor Godwin will hand over the pass, but warn you about all of the monsters in the cave. By now, you should also be a well-armed farmer, so that’s no problem.

BITE THE HAND THAT FEEDS

Every day at noon, Mist comes out to your farm to see how you’re doing, and stays out until about 6 PM or so. Most days she doesn’t have anything too interesting to say.

Once you have the pass to Carmite Cave, wait until she heads out to your farm. Then, run down and to the west a bit, and enter her house. Walk up to the cabinet at the back of the house and examine it carefully. You’ll fi nd an invaluable Empty Bottle. Actually, you can go into Mist’s House and get it at any time, so maybe she doesn’t mind.

MORE PILFERING

Next, head into Jasper’s house and enter the doors on the lower level. This lets you access Jasper’s crowded, obviously ignored basement. Search around and you’ll fi nd a second Empty Bottle waiting for the taking.

Of course, Bianca does show up to ask you why you’re rummaging around in her father’s things… But it’s just an Empty Bottle, and she could really care less if you take it. You, on the other hand, absolutely need it.

STOCK UP

Before heading into Carmite Cave, you want to make sure you are properly prepared. The fi rst things you need are medicines to protect you against the highly dangerous Poison and Sealed status ailments. You can heal Poison status by eating an Antidotal Herb, and by now you should have stockpiled plenty just from clearing out your fi elds. Dealing with Sealed status involves eating a very expensive medicine called Roundoff, which costs 498g a pop. Fortunately, one is all you need for any given trip.

Take in all the Grasses and Bamboo Sprouts you’ve gathered, since they let you restore a little HP. Finally, have Dr. Edward brew up two Recovery Potions to fi ll your Empty Bottles. These powerful potions restore 150 HP each, but you should use them sparingly. These potions are basically on hand for emergencies, and when you confront the cave’s boss.

36

MEET IVAN

Day 7 should be the fi rst holiday where you have appreciable cash in your pocket. If you’ve managed to save up over 1000g, head into town and meet Ivan. He waits just to the left of the entrance to the town square. Ivan sells something different every holiday, but for now the only thing you want to make sure you get is the Seed Maker. The other Makers he sells on Day 7 will only be useful later in the game, when you have livestock, so there’s no need to pick them up now.

SEED MAKER

The Seed Maker sits on a counter in your house, ready to start churning out money. Put any sort of produce in it, and the Seed Maker turns the vegetable into its own seed. Toss in a Strawberry and free Strawberry Seeds come out. Cool, huh? If you didn’t sell your Radish crop earlier in the game, this is a great source of free Radish Seeds to plant in Carmite.

THE FIRST STEP

Now it’s time to enter Carmite Cave. Unlike most RPG dungeons, the dungeons in Rune Factory aren’t designed to be cleared in a single pass. Most trips you’ll fi ght for ground, plant some crops, level up a bit, retreat, and start over again next time. Fortunately, Mist gives you the Escape spell just after you enter to make this much easier.

DUNGEON CULTIVATION

The main thing that may slow down your progress in Carmite Cave will be running out of Rune Points, then running your Hit Points so low it’s no longer safe to fi ght monsters. Later in the game there will be many options for dealing with this, but right now the best way is by planting crops in the dungeon.

Once a fi eld of crops has ripened, it releases a small amount of pure Rune energy every day. You can collect this to replenish your Rune Points. As long as you don’t harvest the crops, they’ll keep producing more Rune energy at the start of each day. Therefore, you should plant as many fi elds of crops as you can in the dungeon, and don’t harvest anything until you’ve beaten the boss.

The awesome thing about caves when it comes to farming is that their temperature never changes. It’s effectively always a given season in a given cave. Carmite’s temperature is always Spring-like, so you can always plant Spring crops there. This is especially handy in Winter, when you can’t grow crops outside at all.

ES C A P E

Escape takes 0 Rune Points to cast, and takes you directly back to the entrance of the dungeon. Use it whenever you have run your HP so low that you start hearing the beeping sound over the game’s soundtrack. The beeping indicates you’re close to death, and how rapidly beeps follow each other indicate exactly how close. Passing out in a dungeon means you’ve died, and then it’s game over for you.

Radishes

The best crop to plant in Carmite Cave for now is Radishes, since they ripen after only four days. Then you can harvest them after you’ve beaten the boss, and replace them with more lucrative Spring crops like Strawberries.

BEATING MONSTERS

Monsters don’t wander Carmite Cave at random. They’re tethered to Mysterious Devices, machines that spawn monsters infi nitely until destroyed. When fi ghting monsters, try to position yourself so your blows also hit the Device and damage it. If you rely heavily on hit-and-run fi ghting, you’ll fi nd that a new monster spawns before you have a chance to hit the Device.

Instead, it’s best to wade in and try to use the Device itself to keep the monster from being able to hit you frequently. Also rely on your weapon’s fast attack speed to interrupt enemy attack animations. As Raguna gains experience and levels up, you’ll eventually fi nd you can do enough damage to destroy Devices before they spawn monsters.

BOING!

If a monster is overwhelming you and you need to retreat, there’s an interesting limitation of the Mysterious Devices that you can exploit. A monster generated by a Device generally can’t move beyond a certain distance from it. So, if you Dash away from a Mysterious Device, the monsters can’t really pursue you.

DANGER IS HAPPENING!

Fight your way through the fi rst fl oor of Carmite Cave, clearing any of the fi elds you happen to pass by as you go. That’s valuable trash, after all. As you approach the stairs to the second level, Ivan appears with a free gift: the Radar Device, which helps you detect where the Mysterious Devices that generate monsters are. Its usefulness is a little blunted if you’ve bought this strategy guide, since it contains complete maps for every cave. I guess it’s the thought that counts.

USING THE RADAR DEVICE Let’s say, hypothetically speaking, you’re the kind of person to follow a walkthrough for a game, but you do not want to use the pre-labeled maps. If so, you need to use the Radar Device. When equipped, the Radar Device beeps once for every Mysterious Device left on the fl oor of the Cave where you’re currently standing. If you use it and it doesn’t beep, there are no Mysterious Devices there at all. ,

CAMPING GEAR

Next you want to get the Sleeping Bag, and preferably quickly. The best way to get it is dangerous, but pays off big dividends when it comes to clearing the cave quickly.

939-1 02 a Spring.indd 37 6/27/07 1:44:26 PM

38

Make sure you enter the dungeon at full HP and RP. Immediately start Dashing. Don’t stop to fi ght monsters, destroy Devices, or do anything else. Just keep running, and use the maps of Carmite Cave in the Cave Guide section of this book to plan your route. Make sure you carry Antidotal Herb, so you can remove the Poison status the poison tiles on the fl oor later in the dungeon infl ict on you.

You’ll meet Zavier and get the Sleeping Bag when you make it to the last fl oor of the dungeon, where the boss resides. You can’t head in to fi ght the boss, since you haven’t destroyed all of the Mysterious Devices in the cave. Just Escape once you have the Sleeping Bag, and go get some rest.

CHEAP SLEEPING BAG

Using the Sleeping Bag to camp out in a dungeon lets you restore a little HP and RP. It’s not as effi cient as sleeping in your own bed, but since you don’t leave the dungeon, the Mysterious Devices you’ve already destroyed won’t respawn.

It’s best to save the Sleeping Bag for when you’re making good progress in a dungeon and the time slips past midnight, or you’re so deep in the dungeon that Escaping would cost you too much

ground. Don’t use it too frequently, or you’ll fi nd that trips into the dungeon are suddenly eating up weeks of your time.

FRIENDLY WEAR

After you have the pass to Carmite Cave, take some time to talk to the townspeople. They’ll all have different dialog now that they know you’re about enter the cave.

When you stop in Jasper’s house, be sure to talk to Tabatha. She’ll give you the Pet Glove, which you can eventually use to turn vicious monsters into docile livestock. You won’t be able to use it until Camus has built you a Monster Hut. For now, just keep it safe in your inventory.

ONE MORE THING

You need one more basic tool before you can start really kicking the snot out of Carmite Cave: the Hammer. Till and plant at least six fi elds in Carmite Cave to make Leo hand it over to you.

CHEAP HAMMER

Later in the game the Hammer will let you make money more quickly than agriculture, but for now you primarily need it so you can start mining the Ore in Carmite Cave. Mining with the Cheap Hammer yields worthless Scrap Iron and valuable Iron that you can use to upgrade all of your other tools.

939-1 02 a Spring.indd 38 6/27/07 1:44:32 PM

39

Spring

DUNGEON SURVIVAL Meeting your fi rst goal of six fi elds (tilled and planted) won’t be easy. Right now Raguna’s experience level and Swordsmanship skill are low. You’ll burn through Rune Points quickly. Your HP fully restores when Raguna levels up, but it’s hard to control when this happens.

Just take your time making progress and leveling up your relevant skills, and don’t hesitate to use the Sleeping Bag or Escape when you’re near death. Use trips back to town as an opportunity to chat, tend your fi elds, and replenish your item stores as necessary. Keep an eye on the calendar, so you can make sure you don’t miss important events while camping out in caves.

TIME TO UPGRADE

Once you’ve got the Hammer, start taking time to mine ore in Carmite Cave. At fi rst it will exhaust you more quickly, but your skill levels and the Rune from your crops should even things out quickly. Once you’ve got enough ore (and money), it’s time to start dropping your tools off with Leo so he can improve them. Start with your most important tool, the Watering Can.

TINPLATE WATERPOT

Two pieces of Iron, 450 g, and two days with Leo improve your original watering can tremendously. Now it can hold 24 tiles worth of water, and gains a charge technique that lets you water three tiles at once.

MINING TIPS

If you’ve checked the Carmite Cave maps, you know that different ore deposits in a dungeon spawn different types of ore. In addition, the probability of spawning something valuable increases the deeper you are in a cave. If you want Iron, there’s no chance of it spawning until you’re in the area around Device 04, and your chances of getting Iron and Bronze instead of Scrap Iron increase when mining on B1F. So don’t waste your time—only mine in areas where there’s a good chance of getting something valuable.

LEO’S SCHEDULE

Once you drop a tool off with Leo to be improved, the number of days you have to wait to get it back does not indicate working days. Leo does not appear to work on rainy days, Holidays, and festivals, but these days actually will count against a tool’s forging time. What you can’t do on a non-working day is actually get your tool back from him, which is a pain. Save your game every night before going to bed when you’re waiting to get something back from Leo, since you can reload and try to get sunny weather. If you can’t, then Leo’s going to sit on your fi nished tool for another day.

Combat in the dungeon is smooth sailing until you run into the nasty Hornets lurking on the B1F (and there’s another group lurking on B2F). Not only do Hornets spawn two at a time, but they’re very fast and vicious long-range attackers. The best way to take them out is to run in and take out the Device fi rst. The Hornets attack mercilessly, so retreat and replenish your HP if you start to hear beeping. If you are poisoned, immediately retreat and eat an Antidotal Herb. Once the Device is gone, hit both Hornets with combo attacks and Dash to avoid their stingers.

There are a few areas in Carmite Cave you can’t pass without stepping over Poison Tiles, which poison you. You can dissolve Poison Tiles with Neutral Agent, but right now it isn’t worth the money. Just walk over them and immediately eat an Antidotal Herb instead. If you don’t have any Antidotal Herbs on hand, you don’t have any business being in a dungeon to begin with.

On Carmite’s B2F, you run into your fi rst Door Trap. A Door Trap essentially locks you into a room once you enter it, and you can’t leave until you’ve destroyed the Mysterious Device that’s locked into the room with you. The Door Trap on B2F isn’t too nasty, since it only contains a Chirori Device, but later dungeons feature Door Trap rooms guarded by truly nasty monsters.

GREATER DEMON

The fi rst boss fi ght in Rune Factory is a pretty simple affair. The Greater Demon is enormous, ape-like, and very slow. How dangerous he is depends on how frequently he opts to use his more dangerous moves. Even at that, he’s only really a danger to you because the room you fi ght him in is so small.

He has three attack patterns, each easily avoided by Dashing. The fi rst is a simple punch that gives you an opening to hit him. The second is signaled when he stands on his hind legs and beats his chest—a second later, he charges directly at you. Again, just Dash away, but don’t go back to hit him. He retaliates with a very fast punch after he rams the wall, so you’ll be punished if you go for the attack. If you’re quick, you can sometimes land a combo while he’s beating his chest.

His fi nal pattern is his most dangerous, and if he uses it a lot you’ll have a hard time. The Demon retreats to a corner of the cave and uses the Stonespike spell, which causes patterns of spikes to burst up from the fl oor behind you. When he uses this pattern, you can’t really get an opening to attack him (since if you stand still, the spikes maul you). Just keep moving until the spell is over and the Demon shifts back to his other attack patterns.

A single hit from the Greater Demon can do anywhere from 15 to 50 points of damage, so be ready to use your Recovery Potions. You ordinarily use the Potions by equipping them with the scrolling Equipment Menu, but you never want to bog yourself down with the real time menus in a boss fi ght. Hit the start button and equip the potion manually by swapping it with your weapon on the Inventory screen. Exit the menu, run to a remote corner of the room, and quickly use it. Then enter the Inventory screen again, swap your weapon back, and go back to fi ghting.

The Greater Demon turns red and speeds up his attack patterns when you’ve reduced him to about 25% of his original HP count. He also gains a few new tricks. When he charges the wall, he’ll charge twice more before he changes patterns. He can also start tracking you, and won’t break the pattern until you Dash by him closely enough to trigger an attack.

Since all of his attacks are sped up, your openings for hitting him are shorter and less frequent. Don’t get careless and try tanking through his attacks. Just keep dodging and hitting the Greater Demon with combos after his punching attack, and he’ll go down.
