This month’s issue contains news of the Joint Quiz Night with the Soroptomists, the Young Artist Competition,
continuing games events, bulb planting and our Scatter Week as well as all the Calendar related work.
Editorial October seemed to fly by with everything at a
standstill despite being a five week month on the
Rotary calendar. But after a little delay we did pitch in with a very enjoyable Joint Quiz Night
with the Soroptomists at the end of October.
Still, I did not really have enough to fill the pages and so onto November which was a much busier
month with our scatter week and the great effort
to increase our calendar sales.
Sadly, despite last year’s clean sweep with the final bowling game, we have not progressed in
this year’s gavel competition though some comfort
can be had that the loss was only on a count back.
Congratulations to George Delgaty and company
for getting the crocus bulbs planted at last. The
International committee have certainly been busy with their pink theme this year.
Finally, and by no means least, congratulations to
Ian Brown for the superb effort in bringing the 2017 Young Artists Competition to fruition; a
bumper year for entries.
Planting Crocus at Charlotte Gate.
For over 30 years, Rotary has been working tirelessly
to rid the world of the deadly disease polio and as a result of its members’ efforts the number of polio
endemic countries has dropped from 125 to just three. Over 2.5 billion children have received
vaccinations thanks to the help of Rotary.
International Convenor George Delgaty said: “We are
delighted that Bellway is allowing us to plant bulbs in such a prominent place near the main traffic lights at
the entrance to the new development. Hopefully, people driving past will see it and want to find more
about the work we do in the local community and the
polio campaign.”
Purple has become a symbol for polio eradication as children have their pinkies dyed purple when they
are immunised in developing countries. Rotary has
joined forces with the Royal Horticultural Society to plant over 7 million purple crocus bulbs across Great
Britain and Ireland.
Fraser Conn, Sales Director of Bellway Homes (Scotland) Ltd, said: “We are delighted to be involved

David Annand.

in such a worthy campaign and it will be wonderful to see crocuses bloom next year. Crocuses are a great
symbol of hope, as soon as you see them you instantly
think at last winter is coming to an end.”

Generations Working Together
Maureen O'Reilly, Perth & Kinross Council's very first Intergenerational Development Officer,
visited us this evening to explain her new role.
Maureen, pictured below with host Janet Simpson,
hails from Edinburgh but has lived in Perthshire for 18 years, having previously worked for
Arthritis Care, NHS Tayside, Marie Curie, and the British Red Cross. She is currently using Perth
Grammar School and the Community School Auchterarder as bases for her task of bringing the
generations together.
Maureen is responsible for developing
intergenerational initiatives within the two schools which will address literacy and numeracy by
recruiting older volunteers and providing support
to organisations that are keen to connect and grow their intergenerational work.
Generations Working Together, a Scottish charity,
provides information, delivers support and encourages involvement to benefit all of
Scotland's generations, by working, learning,
volunteering and living together.

China in Pictures
When Mike Graham's speaker cancelled at short
notice, he turned to his wife, Jane, who kindly stood in and told the story of their trip to China,
including lots of photos of the more well-known
landmarks.
First she took us to Beijing for views of the Great Wall of China and the Emperor's Summer Palace.
Then Beijing to Xi'an for a visit to the Terracotta
Army before going on to Nanjing and views of the famous double-decker bridge across the Yangtze
River. Towards the end of their journey, they travelled from Nanjing to Suzhou on the Bullet
Train and on to Shanghai before returning home via London.
Many thanks to Jane for her rescue act and for showing us some lovely photos -
Trekking In The Himalayas
Estelle Nicol, wearing traditional Indian dress, came to
explain her involvement with Marie Curie and her exploits
in raising funds for the charity. She treated us to some spectacular pictures taken during her trip to India and the
Himalayas.
Estelle is an active Rotarian in Auchterarder, a director of Perth & Kinross Credit Union and Minute Secretary of
Auchterarder District Community Council. She is currently
planning her next fund-raising trip to Costa Rica shortly, followed by a trek to Base Camp Everest in 2019.

Soroptimist/Rotary Quiz
There was a full house at the Royal George Hotel on
Wednesday 25th October when 18 teams entered the
quiz organised by our club on behalf of the Perth Soroptimists.
Our international convenor, George Delgaty, took over
the running of the event, ably assisted by Bruce
Cameron as an excellent quizmaster.
Bruce Cameron and Frank Sloan had spent many weeks in the preparation of the questions which were much
appreciated by the large attendance.
The Royal George Hotel provided a
complimentary stovie supper enjoyed and
appreciated by all.
The winning team were The Spiders, all NHS workers, captained by Anne Gray.

Charity Ride In Vietnam
Brian Johnston took the opportunity to tell us
about the cycle ride, some 500 km in 8 Days,
he is undertaking in April next year in Vietnam for one of his favourite charities, CARE
International UK.
Brian is hoping to raise £1750 and at the time of writing he has already achieved 85% of the
target. What a way to train for the Tayside
Challenge!
Brian is pictured with members of the club who wish him an enjoyable trip and a safe return.
Young Artist Competition
In conjunction with the Perthshire Art Association, the Rotary Club of Perth Kinnoull has been
sponsoring the Young Artist Competition for
secondary schools in the Perth area since 2007. We are most proud of this the 11th occasion of our
involvement as we have had a record number of 112 entries, with 6 out of the 7 local secondary
schools taking part.
However, it gave the judges from the Art
Association a very difficult task and we thank them very much for their deliberations. Dr Alistair Ross
kindly presented the prizes to the successful pupils and their schools.

In response to the devastation caused by the Category 5 Hurricane Irma throughout Rotary District 7020’s many islands, Aquabox are despatching today via DHL, 180 Aqua Family Filters (15 Aqua 12's) to the British
Virgin Islands. The filters will provide safe drinking water and will be distributed by Rotary District 7020.
