Châtel, naturally beautifulChâtel remains true to its values and traditions and

promises to guarantee you the very best skiing while still being committed to respecting the environment.

We may have tamed the mountain but we treat it kindly.

"Châtel, green village, white resort": this slogan sums up perfectly our commitment

to environmentally friendly practices, enabling you to enjoy the mountains even more and achieve a sense of well-being.

In winter in Châtel, with skis on you can happily cross the border as many times as you like, repeatedly switching from France to Switzerland and vice versa. Boundaries melt away and you can concentrate on enjoying the blue-and-white vista of amazing snowfields stretching to the horizon in a place where borders no longer count.

It’s a fantastic experience, strange but exciting at the same time; it feels like you’re breaking the rules. But what difference does it make which side you’re on? The snow is just as white, and everyone else is doing it, cashing in on the white gold. You may not realise it, but you’re getting a geography lesson thrown in too.

Of course, in the Portes du Soleil the border may be no more and the area may have been opened up, but there are still rules and the customs officers still keep a lookout! They’re on skis like everyone else, and their sharp eyes are as keen as ever.

On both the French and Swiss sides, a pleasure shared is a pleasure doubled.

PASSPORT TO CROSS-bORdER SKIING…

New for 2012THE ROCHASSONS dETACHAbLE CHAIRLIfT HAS HAd A mAKEOVER!This is the new version of the Rochassons chairlift, a six-seater detachable chairlift capable of carrying 3,000 skiers an hour to offer even more comfort, safety and speed. THE PORTES DU SOLEIL

The fascination of a world dedicated to snowsports

CHÂTELABONDANCE VALLEY

HAUTE SAVOIEFRANCE

Ideally situated between Lake Geneva and the Mont Blanc range, the Portes du Soleil knows no boundaries. It’s a fine example of how we can work together to bring skiing to more people.

The mountain pass in the Portes du Soleil was originally a crossing point used frequently by everyone from shepherds and their sheep to pedlars and pilgrims. Skiers have now taken over, enjoying a cross-border ski area that links up twelve ski resorts in Switzer-land and France. The two hun-dred ski lifts here whisk you up to the 650 km of carefully managed pistes.

The Portes du Soleil ‘hands-free’ ski pass is your passport to inter-national snowsports. In France you can enjoy un- limited skiing at Châtel, Morzine, Les Gets, Saint Jean d’Aulps, Montriond, Abondance and La Chapelle d’Abondance. And as easy as one, two three you’re free to switch to the Swiss side and the pistes of Morgins, Torgon, Champoussin, Les Crozets and Champéry.

13

Page 16: Chatel Winter 2011-2012

Châtel invents new pistesCHATEL AND ITS PISTES

Sustainable development is one of the key issues facing our environment. Châtel has taken this on board fully and has taken the plunge now to find solutions for the future.

• Our pistes are green… like the snow: blues, red, blacks or greens… pistes of every colour and for every taste! The quality of our ski area is not dependent just on abundant snow falls and the know-how of our piste-grooming machine operators.

• A skilfully maintained landscape: scrub clearance, natural soil improvement and revegetation are carried out in close collaboration with local farmers, who are the custodians of our countryside. The quality of the pastures dictates the quality of the milk… and the quality of the pistes.

• Keeping it clean… the resort of Châtel has signed the sustainable development charter, and this means concrete initiatives on the ground: selective waste sorting, burying utilities networks, using low-consumption (LED) public lighting, providing free bus services, running cleaner grooming machines, protecting springs and also providing waste bins around the ski area and even ash trays at the bottom of chairlifts.

FAMILY SNOWSPORTSYou can see the delight in their eyesIn Châtel, you can get to grips with every type of snowsport at a very young age.

Before reaching the top step on the podium, this was where the village kids caught the skiing bug. A resort with a resolutely family-friendly vocation, and officially recognised as such (awarded the "Famille Plus" label), Châtel inspires people of all ages and abilities to greater things. Snaking tracks and slalom poles are how a passion for snowsports begins. For both parents and children. It’s amazing!

SOMETHING TO TRYAn easy off-piste route accompanied by a mountain professional.

• First tracks with a wilderness feel: together with a mountain professional, explore La Leiche, an easy and accessible off-piste route; this side valley is near the ski lifts and has a reputation for a great location and great snow. A fantastic opportunity to take on the slopes.

Increase your independence: the resort of Châtel is constantly improving its facilities and accessibility for disabled guests.

When it comes to the skiing, skiers with disabilities and mobility-impaired and elderly skiers are looked after by well trained and suitably equipped enthusiastic professionals.

• With equipment such as the Dualski*, Uniski*, Kartski* and Tandemski*, guests can enjoy the pleasures of snow and the mountains and experience the unique thrill of skiing sitting down in the safe hands of a professional.

• With the Taxiski, holidaymakers can head for the peaks for a great view of Lake Geneva, or can be taken up to the ridge for an amazing vista of the Mont Blanc range. Everyone can share in the thrill!

The magic of snow…exclusively natural and renewable

• We are currently undergoing the official process to obtain iSO 14001 certification and working hard to ensure exemplary ski-area management in all sorts of ways. This process involves both environmental and quality procedures and strives to achieve a carefully managed sustainable development approach.

• Unlimited snow where it is needed: to guarantee the very best skiing throughout the winter, our network of snowmakers continues to grow. Last winter it was boosted by a high-altitude storage reservoir holding 130,000 m³ of water.

• The secrets of how to make artificial snow: water, air and nothing else! That’s all there is to it. See behind the scenes of our snowmaking department: a weekly event that takes you on a tour of our ‘snow factory’… Discover a world you never knew existed!

Mountain ecologySkiing in its purest form

Whether we’re looking after the mountain pastures or maintaining the pistes, we have just one thing on our minds… the quality of the countryside.

In Châtel, most pistes are on summer pasture and grazing land, high-altitude areas that are used by some forty farms. Between winter seasons the piste department, working together closely with local farmers, promotes the use of livestock to enrich the mountainsides and create a virtuous circle. This connection between the best mountain pastures and the best pistes is helped along by our piste groomer drivers, who put their finely honed skills to good use to guarantee you the very best skiing.

Clean skiing…The resort of Châtel and SAEM Sports et Tourisme work hard to offer you skiing in a top quality environment.

Selective sorting of both trade waste and domestic waste, secure storage areas, reducing paper and fuel consumption, staff training, electric vehicles, use of low-energy light bulbs and more… And we are now also using biolubricant and fuel that complies with the Euro 5 standard!

20

Page 23: Chatel Winter 2011-2012

for years, châtel and the abondance Valley have been bringing on young skiing talent.

All these young achievers have climbed the steps of the podium in national and international competitions in their disciplines, such as freestyle skiing and ski mountaineering.Buoyed by the hopes of their valley and their shared ambition, they follow in the footsteps of the greats, without forgetting the region in which they were born. The future is assured and the valley is set to continue producing skiing stars.

HOME SWEET HOME

Winter has made its home in the valley…

CHÂTELABONDANCE VALLEY

HAUTE SAVOIEFRANCE

…and has found a little house with a pitched roof that mimics the mountainside. Simply stunningly beautiful!

A blend of innovation and tradition, in unspoilt mountain surroundings the village resort of Châtel cultivates a warmly welcoming and authentic identity. The chalets still have the feel of the old days about them, built in a style closely inspired by the old farmhouses that are still very much a feature of the landscape, some of which are still on working farms.

To tame the mountain and build these unique chalets, the local craftsmen have had to work with the constraints imposed by the climate, make use of the natural materials available to them and adapt to the terrain which makes the rules. Here, everything exists in quiet harmony. A total change of scene that’s guaranteed to recharge your batteries!

ArchitecturAl heritAl heritAl herit ge

In the villages and hamlets,it’s the way the houses are built that catches your eye; you just can’t help admiring them.

Standing out in the mountain pastures or huddled together in the heart of a village, the solidly built fine chalets, sometimes home to two families, look as if they have been built to last forever. Here and there, chapels, wayside shrines and fountains, their roofs sometimes topped with elegant finials, also bear witness to a jealously guarded heritage.

TradiTional Trades

An age-old abilityto turn their hand to anything

Before, there were horn makers, blacksmiths, peasant farmers, cheese makers, rope makers, coopers, sawyers, carpenters, cabinet makers and bell founders living here. Some of these trades survive to this day, to the delight of house builders, interior decorators and holidaymakers, who take home the famous carved wooden doves, a symbol of peace and a heritage handed down by generations of shepherds.

L……and great skill. In the Abondance Valley, the tradition of the wooden dove (a pastoral custom that exists in other mountainous regions of Europe) is alive and well. It takes between three and five hours to create this delicately and intricately carved work of art. From a single block of wood, the expert hands of the wood carver create fine translucent strips of wood that when complete seem to spread their wings as if by magic and take off in imaginary flight. Amazing!

TIMBER TRADITIONSThe chalets here boast gorgeous carved balconiesGalleries are built around the chalets for protection and to allow their owners to keep out of the rain and snow.

Most of them are decorated with balusters (also know as ‘palins’ or ‘palines’), often made by the owners themselves over the winter. These balusters can be simple vertical planks or blocks of wood skilfully cut into geometric shapes with embellishments and interlaced designs, giving each chalet its own identity and style, or even sending out a message to those outside. Open your eyes!

our vision of the futureSkiing for people of all abilities, regardless of how fit or what age you are!

• Great for beginners: the Portes du Soleil has introduced an innovative new product designed specifically for adults who have never put on skis in their life. It would be such a shame and so frustrating for them to hear their friends talking about their ski holiday, the deep, crisp snow and the amazing views they've seen.

• "you can ski": the easy way to get started! This exclusive offer includes everything (ski pass + ski lessons + equipment) and was designed for adult beginners. Flexible and progressive: choice of a 6-consecutive-day package, a 3-day package and 3-weekend package. It also includes tailored tuition and a special learners' ski area (with beginner-only pistes), where beginners don't stay for long!

l’Éterlouthis is a fun educational trail on the subject of the environ-ment and the animal and plant life in our mountains. Follow this looped trail, situated in Pré-la-Joux next to the sledging runs, and a dozen panels will guide you around, helping all the family to answer a variety of questions.

châtellan trailthis is a trail through the woods that offers a pleasant and ins-tructive walk for all the family below the Mont de Grange nature reserve, with panoramas over to the village and, at the end of the route, of the Cornettes de Bise mountain. See the curious red water spring too! A treasure hunt with questions about what you have learned on the trail is available on request from Châtel Tourisme.

ART AND HISTORICAL INTEREST

Certified as an Area of Artistic and Historical Interest,Châtel offers a wealth of tourist interest, supplemented with the opening this season of the Mountain Smuggling Interpretation Centre.

The old customs house has been converted into a cultural tourist attraction, offering visitors a different view of this border region and a new insight into the economic and human exchanges that went on. Fascinating facts and tall tales, reality and fiction recreate a colourful and richly documented world that enables visitors to learn all about the subject of smuggling. Customs officers and smugglers, sometimes on skis, played a tough game of

cat and mouse, at times for a few meagre provisions to improve their lot and at others for illegal goods that they could sell on the quiet. Come and experience an epic era in history!

A region firmly rooted in its forestsThe forests are a local natural resource that has been exploited for a long time. Until the end of the 19th century, timber and farming were the main industries in the Abondance Valley.

In the 1950s, the water in the River Dranse and its tributaries powered up to four sawmills in the area between Prélajoux and Villapeyron. The river flow was used to transport the timber to the mills (where it was destined for building) and also to float them downstream all the way to Lake Geneva! The Crépy sawmill, which

closed in 1966, is currently being restored back to a working mill in line with the standards of the day. This sawmill is not being restored just to turn it into a tourist attraction but also to give a new lease of life to the forestry industry here, which appears once again to have a bright future.

TribuTe To The local cuisine

A tasty and sociable holiday experience

Sitting down to dinner with your family or friends to try the tasty local dishes cooked in the mountain style: what better way is there to titillate your taste buds and sharpen your appetite?

In Châtel, both on the snowy mountainsides and down in the valley, when you've had your fill of snowsports you can enjoy our gourmet recipes which qualify for the flattering but deserved title of Savoyard specialities and are celebrated in style at the Neiges Étoilées festival of gastronomy held in January.

A benchmark of the highest order for gourmets looking for original flavours and a hearty cuisine for foodies with big appetites, our culinary know-how goes down very well and makes the most of our delicious local cheeses and charcuterie. Our tradition is short on neither taste nor ideas!

Ou r r oo t s

See abondance cheese being madeOnce a week, Philippe and Annick invite you to their farm where they will explain and demonstrate how they make Abondance cheese, our famous local produce.
