Andrew Spiering Here's a link to Daniel Tal's book - http://astore.amazon.com/land8-20/detail/047034525X

Daniel Tal does anyone use SketchUp for terrain modeling at all?Rico Flor hi guys, will be here in just a sec. if we lose CAD import

functionality, what happens next? Unless they improve sketchup to a point that it now acts like revit (ugh, too complicated for me)

Daniel Tal The Pro version of SketchUp will maintain the DWG import / export function.

9:05

regina irizarry I like the pro for sun/shade functionRob Rosner No. Google bought it so that people could share and create

3D model for Google EarthRico Flor aah great…hope they don't ramp up the individual license

costRob Rosner I doubt it. 9:06Rob Rosner The upgrade is $95Rico Flor Daniel, is your book coming out?Daniel Tal http://sketchupdate.blogspot.com/Daniel Tal Hello Rico, the book is already out 9:07regina irizarry Daniel - I've seen your book on amazon, it looks terrificAndrew Spiering http://astore.amazon.com/land8-20/detail/047034525XRob Rosner Looks like a good book to get.Andrew Spiering Daniel, can you tell us a little bit about the book?Rico Flor Past pre-order? Great, bookstores in the UAE can get some

now : )Daniel Tal sorry - seem to have chat problems today 9:08Daniel Tal if you want to know more about the changes to SketchUp

check out this blog by the dev's here:http://sketchupdate.blogspot.com/

Sean D. Henderson So what are we discussing today?Daniel Tal it’s the second blog downDaniel Tal TYDaniel Tal the book is currently out - I am looking for any feedback

and models if people are willing to share them9:09

Daniel Tal also, please ask any questions. Will do my best to answer them.

Rico Flor Andrew…so sorry Moderator…what is the topic today? Daniel, just got excited bout the book…

Rob Rosner Daniel, what kind of models would you like me to share?Andrew Spiering SketchUp is today's topic. 9:10regina irizarry Daniel does your book cover terrain modeling?Daniel Tal any - want to get a feel for the type of work people are

doing in SketchUp, how long it takes them, what they think.

Daniel Tal The hope is to help give feedback to the SketchUp people so they add tools and functions for Landscape Arch.

9:11

Andrew Spiering How does SketchUp compare to what Vectorworks offers?

Rob Rosner I can do the basic house model with some real detail in under 2 hours.

Daniel Tal Do people here use SketchUp in their everyday work?Rob Rosner I generally only worry about the exterior due to my being a

landscape architect.Rob Rosner I do.Daniel Tal I am starting to consult with people who are using

Vectorworks and getting a feel for it9:12

Andrew Spiering Cool.Daniel Tal So not sure yet : )Andrew Spiering What do you think so far?Andrew Spiering oops u just answered my question…Hilary Ann Noonan I use it all the time, but just for perspective drawings. It's

too difficult to get curves for terrain. I tried using it for my thesis design, but took an incredibly long time to build and just didn't quite work as a graphic.

Rico Flor I do when 3D viz is very important in the design process…like right now I'm trying to integrate some fabric structures onto the podium I'm working on, and they'll be strun in between building towers…tough for me to CAD that…

Andrew Spiering Is SketchUp the best option for us right now? 9:13Emily Krohe we do more hand graphics…quick and loose - just to get

points across. SketchUp seems like you could really get lost in it time wise

Emily Krohe (we = 6 person res design firm)Rob Rosner When you learn some concepts for quick modeling, you will

find it to be a very useful thinking tool.Kaitlin Beatty My office uses it for both lanscape Arch. And arch, I find

that terrain modeling very difficult to use so I usually use sketchup for a starting point and hand draw terrain.

9:14

Daniel Tal Hillary - there are ways to use the Sandbox tools to create organic models that are efficient. It has to do with not creating an entire digital elevation modeling and creating elevation when needed.

Rico Flor gotta go do business : )…hope to see the transcripts soon! Cheers all! Congratulations on the book, Daniel, will purchase for sure!

Daniel Tal thanks, Rico!Kaitlin Beatty Does your book show how to use sandbox efficiently?Hilary Ann Noonan I did build fabric structures that worked out well. I don't

know sandbox tools, I'll get the book if that's in there.Rob Rosner There are some very cool free Ruby scripts that do some

very powerful drawing for you.9:15

Daniel Tal Yes - if its ok here is a quick overview of the bookDamian Holmes we use sketchup, rhino, 3DMax, Maya and grasshopper.

Myself in only use sketchup for design testing.Daniel Tal Hello, Damian!

Andrew Spiering Hey Damian!Daniel Tal Part 1 goes over basics - components, tools and

components like trees, shrubs and other site amenities9:16

Rob Rosner Sketchucation.com is a good source of informationDaniel Tal Part 2 starts going over a process of how to create Site

Designs - starts with a small site and builds up to a larger one. It also reviews building models in detail

Andrew Spiering http://www.sketchucation.com/Daniel Tal Part 3 is about the Sandbox tools, creating conceptual

terrain, complex organic forms and also reviews architecture

Daniel Tal Part 4 shows how to integrate CAD with SketchUp 9:17Andrew Spiering has anyone checked out - http://www.go-2-school.com/Daniel Tal And yes, SketchUcation is a must site to visit if you use

SketchUpRob Rosner http://www.crai.archi.fr/RubyLibraryDepot/Ruby/RUBY_Libr

ary_Depot.htmis another excellent link.

Daniel Tal Check out www.smutards.com for more ruby scriptsHilary Ann Noonan thanks guys, saving all urls and getting book 9:18Daniel Tal and here is a link to work examples created using SketchUp

and AutoCAD. Most, if not all the modles were created in less than a day: http://www.youtube.com/dtalspace

Rob Rosner I really like SmustardsDaniel Tal About terrain - many people want to use existing contour

info. There is a way to do that but that is for a future book : )

9:19

AR Coffeen how does sketchup compare to EON Vue? 9:20Daniel Tal The trick is to create conceptual grading - its as easy as

using the PushPull tool to create volumes by using the FromContour tool.

AR Coffeen I've heard good things about Vue but haven't dove into it much

Daniel Tal I love VUE - for rendering. Amazing programAlexandre Gagnon I use VueRob Rosner Are there any good rendering programs for SU that are

free?Daniel Tal PodiumAR Coffeen so you can render sketchup models in VUE?Ben Yahr Vue is awesome for natural scenes, but its just for

rendering, not modelingBen Yahr Yes you can import su to vue 9:21Daniel Tal Renderplus, kerkythea, just to name someAR Coffeen nice I'll have to play around with thatEli Rufe You can model in vue, its just not anything that you'd be

used to unless you've used vue in the past or bryceAR Coffeen I've used kerkythea for good night scenes

Daniel Tal Check out SketchUcation - many people using rendering programs and the people on that site are all experts

Rob Rosner Are they free? 9:22Daniel Tal I have 2 blogs posted on SketchUp and landscape arch and

will add more bi-monthly - are there any topics people want me to cover?

Daniel Tal SketchUcation is free yesBen Yahr My problem with su (and modeling in vue) is that its tough

to be accurate. You can get a quick, good looking model, but then it has no relation to your actual design.

Rob Rosner Are the programs free?AR Coffeen not legally 9:23Daniel Tal Do you integrate AutoCAD or CAD programs with SketchUp

Ben?Daniel Tal We have been using our models for CD's in tandem with

LayoutRob Rosner I am looking for legal.Ben Yahr This is my solution: model in autocad, then generally import

to vue, sometimes su.Daniel Tal Podium is open source.Jeff Prince I've used AutoCAD _ Accurender for 10 years. Pretty nice

tool for landscape architects interested in nice 3D trees.9:24

Daniel Tal There is also LandFXAlexandre Gagnon I love Vue tree generator and the ecosystemsBen Yahr Its also a comfort level and integration problem, su and

layout are only used for some projects, but autocad is used for every project

Daniel Tal yes, I agree with thatAndrew Spiering Land F/X is a great tool.Daniel Tal AutoCAD is a mainstay 9:25Andrew Spiering Where do you get your models?Alexandre Gagnon I use Land Desktop to do the terrain modelingBen Yahr Me tooDaniel Tal but it is possible to be accurate using both.Rob Rosner Land F/X is still pretty expensive.Ben Yahr Has anyone used autodesk impression?Andrew Spiering True… but it speeds up production.Jeff Prince Land F/X has a strange way of organizing it's layers and

plotting methods. I prefer style based plotting.Rob Rosner I have used impression since the first BetaJeff Prince Vectorworks rocks compared to Land F/X 9:26Ben Yahr I tried impression some, but for some reason it bogs my

system like crazyAndrew Spiering How about how they integrate with SketchUp?Ben Yahr In theory, it should work well for the su look straight from

autocadRob Rosner it probably has to do wth your graphics card.Ben Yahr Hmm, I'll look into that, I have a quadra with 512mb 9:27

Rob Rosner Impressions is a very dependant on the graphics card memory and capabilities.

Rob Rosner I use SketchUp to help with storm water pond design 9:28Rob Rosner Anybody else?Andrew Spiering Nope. Never used it for that…Jeff Prince sketchup w/ Photshop or hand drawn post processing is one

of the fastest methods we have used to produce conceptual graphics

Daniel Tal has anyone played around with SketchUp styles? 9:29Ben Yahr quick su question: is there a way to turn off "offset limited"

by adjacent surfaces?Rob Rosner You have to push-pull again after thatTony Roell We also use it for conceptual workDaniel Tal not that I have found out - but there is a plug-in called

surface operation that will do the trickBen Yahr coolDaniel Tal check out some of these ruby scripts: 9:30

http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=180&t=16909

Daniel Tal They can help do organice modeling in SketchUp.Daniel Tal you do need to register with SketchUcation to see the quick

videos and download the scripts but they are free9:31

Jeff Prince making custom styles is the way to go weather you use Sketchup, Illustrator, or Word…powerful workflow.

Daniel Tal another question - do people here feel that SketchUp will be beneficial to Land Arch. In the future?

Rob Rosner I do.Andrew Spiering Yes. 9:32Daniel Tal Jeff any examples that you can share with me?Jeff Prince sure, I'll have to post some pics to my website.Daniel Tal Would having a tutorial showing how to use digital elevation

models (contours) be useful?Daniel Tal thank you 9:33Margaret Cummins Does anyone expect that BIM will begin to impact the tools

you're using for modeling and rendering?Jeff Prince http://s434.photobucket.com/albums/qq61/agavelvr/portfol

io%20samples/Wendy Meyer hello, not to change the subject but has anybody heard of

LandWorks CAD? It's an Australian company that is lots cheaper tha Cad and has a big plants database plus similar features to LandFX in terms of automatic plant counts & tables…

Phillip J Hutchinson SU is beneficial to LA's now. Super easy to show clients a quick view of a design that they can read. The problem is that they quickly become focused on details.

Andrew Spiering Nice work, Jeff! 9:34Andrew Spiering Wendy, yes. And it doesn't look that great.Daniel Tal Phil, do you integrate AutoCAD with SketchUp?

Chat Topic: SketchUp and Landscape ArchitectureSeptember 02, 2009

Emily Krohe I agree about the detail comment…Jeff Prince thx andrewAndrew Spiering Margaret, yes. VW has incorporated it within their

software…9:35

Phillip J Hutchinson Daniel, I usually import CAD base info (surveys, topo, etc) into SU, but not the other way around.

Rob Rosner I think showing any sketch with some level of detail takes a client to start getting detailed in their review of it.

Daniel Tal Comments on detail used to be a problem - it’s a matter of layering enough detail to create a cohesive image. It's similar to creating a completed scene with a hand rendering. You have to make sure that you create the right focus.

Daniel Tal Jeff, really nice work! 9:36Andrew Spiering Daniel, is SU going to incorporate SIM in the future? 9:37Andrew Spiering BIMPhillip J Hutchinson My point about detail is that clients (and some designers)

start expecting a simple SU model to be CD level, and they start thinking way beyond the conceptual level too quickly.

Jeff Prince thx Daniel. Those are examples of several different workflows I have used over the past 10 years. Rhino + Flamingo is a cool combo too.

9:38

Daniel Tal Andrew - They already have - Dynamic Components. The thing is that its new to SU 7 and there is not enough material for people to become familiar with how they work

Rob Rosner Phil - you are right. You can show your SU model using a very sketchy style to help with that.

Daniel Tal but I have seen recent work that combines Layout and Dynamic Components to make SU have BIM qualitites.

Andrew Spiering nice. 9:39Daniel Tal However, my own thought is that SketchUp is an upfront

design tool - that’s its strength.Andrew Spiering What do you mean?Daniel Tal For my own use, SketchUp is best used during SD and DD.

If you know how to use it, you can create highly detailed models very quickly - check out these work examples:

9:40

http://www.daniel-tal.com/Gallery.htmlPhillip J Hutchinson Jeff, your graphics are awesome. I love the technique of

hand rendering over the computer generated model.Daniel Tal every model in that gallery was done in a day or less and

some in hours. Its just a matter of knowing how to use SketchUp with AutoCad to accomplish this.

Andrew Spiering Those took you 10 minutes, right!? 9:41Jeff Prince thx Phillip. Mike Lin is a good teacher : )Jeff Prince http://s434.photobucket.com/albums/qq61/agavelvr/portfol

Jeff Prince example of topo modeling I did for a conferenceRob Rosner Daniel - Those are awesome. I have been getting faster at

site modeling like you show. I will have to buy your book to catchup on the speed.

Andrew Spiering I have had trouble with topography. My tin had holes in it…and it slowed my system down and crashed it a couple of times.

9:42

Daniel Tal For speed and landscape architecture, learn how to integrate CAD with SketchUp. Trust me. I cannot emphasize this more. I am not some graphics specialist. My next blog will touch on AutoCAD and SketchUp and will post it at the end of this week.

Daniel Tal Ay yes, topo - topo is the holy grail in SketchUp. Next Book : )

Jeff Prince most topo models are too complicated as defined by the user. Back up the level of detail a bit

Rob Rosner I export all of my design work from AutoCAD one layer at a time to "keep it simple"

9:43

Daniel Tal I do highly detailed topo models. I am working on an animation that will show one example. But its possible to do

Jeff Prince For single images, a rough model and some post processing can make very economical images for your clients.

Rob Rosner I do my topo work in Civil 3D. I will experiment with exporting the TIN to SU.

9:44

Daniel Tal Rob - there is an easier way. Again, I feel silly plugging the book but my publisher loves it : ) but I review a best-practice method of going from AutoCAD to SketchUp.

Andrew Spiering haha : )Daniel Tal No joke, you can take any site plan from CAD and have a

really detailed model in hours - its about organization, layers, blocks and how you import it.

Jeff Prince when I started out, I had a tendency to be over detailed and it would bring my computer to its knees (a pentium pro 200)

Daniel Tal again, that has to do with learning how to use layers - for example

9:45

Rob Rosner I will probably order your book this week.Daniel Tal AutoCAD layers transfer into SketchUp. AutoCAD blocks

come into SketchUp as components. Right there is the start of organization and the way to model very fast

Rob Rosner Do you write ruby scripts?Alexandre Gagnon Here si some of my best 3D work. Done with Autodesk

Daniel Tal Ruby script writing is an art form. I just use them : ) I am friends with the people who write them and ask them for scripts

9:46

Jeff Prince nice work AlexandreRob Rosner Maybe you could introduce me. I have some pretty good

ideas for scripts.Alexandre Gagnon thanks Jeff 9:47Daniel Tal Alexandre - those are simply amazing!!!Alexandre Gagnon I was still learning at this stage. I did some rendering for

some student friendsRob Rosner I have been using AutoCAD since version 9. I can write

AutoLISP in my sleep.Daniel Tal Rob, log into SketchUcation - all the ruby writers are on the

forums there and take requestsBen Yahr Nice work on the rocks Alexandre. Is that two separate

color rocks as an ecosystem, or a material?9:48

Rob Rosner I'll do that.Daniel Tal Alex, you should write tutorials and blogs on how you did

thatDrew Matthew Maifeld Just got here…can't stay too long - I see we're talking about

SKUP?Alexandre Gagnon It’s a common ecosystem ben 9:49Ben Yahr Cool.Rob Rosner I learned a neat little secret about materials. The SKM files

are actually ZIP files.Daniel Tal welcome Drew and yes : )Kerrie John Does anyone do plans by handDaniel Tal I do plans by hand and then scan them in and use them to

modelDrew Matthew Maifeld here's a link to my favorite skup illustration - multi layer

exports - same view position with different styles applied than combined in photoshop/illustrator to make one image…http://www.land8lounge.com/photo/mwa-barn?context=user

Rob Rosner You can copy them to another folder, rename them with .ZIP and open them to extract the JPG they are based on.

Phillip J Hutchinson I do lots of hand sketching, but pretty quickly go to the computer.

Andrew Spiering Sometimes. 9:50Alexandre Gagnon Thanks Daniel. I must say it took me hours…Rob Rosner I do a lot of masonry design and wanted to make some of

my own brick patterns including some basics such as rowlock, soldier etc.

nice. Very clean and simple.Kerrie John obviously didn't look at the link. Will do!Daniel Tal Kerrie check out this link - 9:53

http://www.daniel-tal.com/Gallery.htmlRob Rosner I also use SketchUp to create graphics for Design

Guidelines.Drew Matthew Maifeld the final layout - to combine the separate images 9:54Daniel Tal The reason I use SketchUp (aside from it being fun for me)

is because I can fit it into our scope and budget. Blog on it here:http://www.land8lounge.com/profiles/blogs/sketchup-scope-and-budget

Daniel Tal Rob, would like to see those exmaples as well. We have using it in our office for the same thing.

9:54

Alexandre Gagnon I rarely used sketchup. its good for studies, and the perspertive mode is very uiser friendly

Drew Matthew Maifeld i have one more example to share of how we used skup to help in a recent construction document set for a project at the university of florida

Phillip J Hutchinson Yes, SU is great for quick massing-type graphics found in design guidelines. Very easy to create color-coded 3D thumbnails that can be incorperated into text.

Daniel Tal its really effectiveDaniel Tal Alex, I dont think you need to use SketchUp, lol - you got

great skills with what you are doing9:55

Alexandre Gagnon the thing that sketchup has and that autocad doesnt have is a nice perpective view

Andrew Spiering SketchUp is soooo easy, too!Daniel Tal does anyone else have any questions?Andrew Spiering and free... for now.Daniel Tal time for me to be billable : )Alexandre Gagnon Autocad has perspective, but its not default, anf its hard to
