Chase isn’t exactly known as a musical hotbed, but this spring there is enough live music going

on to warrant a look. We’ll start with the old standby - The

Citizens on Patrol coffee house night at the Chase Community Hall. On the second Friday of every month through the winter months, this is some good entertainment for $3.00 and you help support the volunteer group.

Normally 10-15 performers take the stage at each Coffee House night, playing blues, country, and oldies. Some of the performers are professionals but COP President Len Comeau said “we always love to see the amateurs come out!” The COP supplies all amps and mixers, just bring your instrument, and attendance is free for performers.

April 10th, starting at 7 pm, is your next chance enjoy the music, the pastries and

a 50/50 draw at the COP Coffee House night.

On a totally different musical note is the “thumpin funky goodness”, Tyler LaCroix and his wife Kristi have been throwing down at the Silver Fox Pub in Chase.

The couple, also known as DJ Logic and Brownie Girl, have both toured all over the province DJing. They moved to Chase last year from Kamloops and while out one night were offered a gig at the Silver Fox. They haven’t been disappointed with the turn out at all.

“Never thought I’d be DJing in Chase, so I decided to give it a go! The first night I played was in October. I wasn’t expecting much to tell you the truth. We’re used to playing some pretty big shows. By 11 pm that night the place was packed and the dance floor was rocking! I was like ‘Wow, go Chase!’” said LaCroix.

A pie cupboard, a Chinese wedding dress from the thrift store, a discarded pocket watch; what do these objects have in com-mon? They were all highly valuable items as-

sessed last year by professional Appraiser, Peter Blundell (of the Canadian Antiques Roadshow) at the Chase Museum. The pocket watch, which was found on

the side of the highway was appraised to be worth over $1000. The wedding dress, which was bought at Value Village for

$40 was valued between $500-$600. The pie cupboard was discovered to be worth $8000. The most amazing appraisal of last year

was the portrait of an English Duke by a famous painter worth more than $340,000! Blundell will be back, by popular demand,

appraising treasures in Chase on Saturday April 11th, 2015. Appointments must be booked in advance

through the Museum. Apointment tickets are $50 (Museum members get $5 off), and it’s $5 to spectate (Free for Museum members). “You learn a lot about antiques just by

watching. Peter and his wife answer all sorts of questions, it is fascinating!” said Museum Curator/Manager Diana Ball. A memorable item for Ball from last

year’s event was an adorable ceramic night light valued at $250. “I offered the owner $50 before it was appraised,” joked Ball. This is a fundraiser for the museum, so

consider getting a ticket and coming out.Phone the Museum at 250-679-8847.

They will be playing once or twice a month, calling the shows “Chase’n the Beat”. The pair bring in their own sound system, lights, lasers, as well as their own style of music, which is mainly house music.

“We like to throw in remixes of classic rock, 90s grunge and hip hop and when the dance floor really gets going, some more bass heavy electronic music. People seem to like our vibe!” said LaCroix.

The next show will be March 28, a CD release party for a mix called “Re-fried Beats Served Chilled” -Mixed by Dj Logic. Everyone who shows up before midnight will get a free copy.

Now out to Golden Ears Farm, where there is a small but beautiful space on the property that has in the past hosted dozens of musicians over the past five years. This spring will see a few more.

The first act coming through, for a show on April 15th is a band conceived in a Victoria cafe, West My Friend. Chase is one stop on their route, dubbed the “Spring Fling Tour”, which takes them through southern BC into Washington and Oregon.

“We decided to come through Chase because [Golden Ears] farm looked so awesome - the commitment to sustainability and community as well as things like the CSA [Food Box] program and bike shop made us really want to come be a part of it, if only for a day!” said Jeff Poynter who plays accordion/vocals in the band.

Tickets for the show, which is on a Wednesday are $10-$15 (sliding scale).

“I think people can expect us to be pushing the boundaries of what “folk music” can be defined as - a West My Friend concert sounds like everything

from roots to jazz to orchestral to bluegrass and beyond. They can also expect toe-tapping music, terrible puns, and songs that will move them through the whole range of emotions,” said Poynter.

Then on April 22nd, Golden Ears will be hosting a two performers from Winnipeg; singer-songwriter Alannah Zeebeck and Tannis Kelm whose musical project is called Pardon Mein French.

“We’re both acoustic singer-songwriters, and we’ll be playing separate sets. I’ll be alternating between guitar and banjo for

my songs, and she plays guitar. Tannis has really poetic songs, I’m a huge fan of her songwriting, and she has a really lovely, rich voice. I have lots of new songs that I’m excited about, and I am fairly new to playing the banjo,” said Zeebeck.

The hat will be passed at this show, and a $5 contribution is suggested.

Q • You said you like reading the “10 questions”, why are you so nervous to answer them?

A • Let’s put it this way, I like to READ about climbing mount Everest, I don’t want to actually climb mount everest.

Q • How do you know Jane, your 10-questions-nominator? A • Our kids went to school together. We were involved in PAP together, Jane is a good organizer, a lot programs she is involved in I ended up in. Our kids are really good friends too.

Q • What’s the neatest thing you’ve got in the mail? A • I get good mail from my nieces and nephews. And from around the world - this guy from Japan, who I met at the counter of the Post Office sent me photos of his wedding and other updates.

Q • What do you like reading?A • Everything... except I am not into manuals. I like stuff with history, it’s just interesting. Q • Have you lived in Chase a long time?A • I grew up here, on a farm on VLA Road.

Q • What do you do for fun? A • I visit my family because that is a lot of fun. I drive to Alberta, we call it the “Rock Star Tour”, staying in a different bed every night.

Q •What’s the best part of working at the post office? A • Meeting all kinds of people!

Q • How would you describe Chase to someone has never been here? A • Chase is a friendly little community. You get to know everybody here. If you need help, it’s amazing people will come out. For example, with the “It’s all in the Attitude, Think Gratitude”, people here love to support things like that.

Q • Do you remember any good advice you got? A • My dad told my son something which can apply to a lot of different situations. My son was training a colt and he had all these big plans and my dad said ‘you can only teach him what you know’. I took from that we are always learning and you can always learn more.Q • He sounds smart...A • He had to be, with 6 girls. He, and my mom too, really instilled ‘family’ as a strong value in us.

Q • Who should we talk to next?A • Marie Vogel

Each week we’ll talk to a different person in town. This week we are talking to Velda Prescott, who works at the Chase Post Office. Velda was very nervous to answer my questions - here’s what I could get out of her...

BOOK REVIEWby Annelise Grube-Cavers

“Spiky murexes, smooth purple moon shells, [and] ancient-looking whelks sand-blasted by the tide...” So Barbara Kingsolver describes her collection of shells brought home from the Bahamas only to find that she’s brought with her not only the cast-off exoskeletons of mollusks, but a living hermit crab. What follows is the story of Buster, a crab who has found his way to Tucson, Arizona, far from his ocean and his tide. The title essay of this collection is a perfect example

of how she blends her background as a biologist with her existence as an author of both non-fiction and fiction. Using clever anecdotes, she teaches readers about their connections with nature. We are not separate from the animal kingdom, but just another species and we need to keep our impact in mind and in check.

She will make you curious about things you haven’t wondered about before, and while these are non-fiction essays, they read like short stories.

Medicine Man!The CBC reported on a therapy to

“alleviate anxiety” in cancer patients. It involved the use of psilocybin. “Magic” mushrooms that is. Another report spoke of Dr. Gabor Mate and his treatment of drug addicts on the Vancouver East side. The Ayahausca therapy was successful as a medicine for drug addiction. How many people consult their doctor about eating hallucinogenic plants to help deal with the psychological challenges of addiction or cancer? What medicine isn’t derived from

plants? I would say the simple act of nurturing plants is medicinal. And who can ignore the word Farmaceutical as being highly plant centric. We have come a long way down a synthetic highway to where the pharmacy doesn’t sell plant medicine. The logic of selling patented potion rather than plant based medicine slithers down the corporate gutter. Unfortunately we have become hypnotized into this normalcy to the point that we argue about weeds being illegal.

The Dr. in the psilocybin story made some interesting points. He was encouraged by the patients overwhelmingly positive response. He struggled to quantify his findings as “science doesn’t understand love!” Science doesn’t understand LOVE! Are we so hopped up on pills we haven’t noticed how cold hearted our explanation of the universe is? Is this the stoned age? A friend started Harmonic Arts

botanical dispensary in Cumberland BC. His father, Terry Willard, is the founder and master herbalist of Wild Rose College. These guys are great sources of legal plant based medicine and information. To meet the guru look up Paul Stamets on Youtube.Medicine is all around

us. In all our relations. May we all find our inner Medicine Man and Woman, and trust the power of love. My name Is Oli, and I’m a Chase

homesteader.

It was an exceptionally exciting weekend for numerous bowlers from Village Lanes this weekend. Capri Valley Lanes in Kelowna hosted the 69th Annual B.C. Interior Championships this weekend; a tournament where some of the best men and women in the province battle it out for trophies, cash, and most importantly, bragging rights.

Kelly Collins proved once again to be a top competitor from our little village,

averaging a whopping 250 over 15 games of bowling, and bowling close to the high score of the tournament with a 370 game, and eight strikes in a row. Helping Kelly along were the rest of the Village Lanes men team; Gene Popadynetz, Guy Alden, Tom Horner, Dwaine Vandevosse, and Rod Thiessen. The men ended up placing 7th in the B Division. The story of the weekend was our Chase Ladies Team whose chemistry was obvious! They brought home the gold, winning first place in their division by over a whopping

412 pins. The ladies team consisted of Kaitlyn Deleeuw, Barb Lawrance,

Ali Maki, Rita Carlson, Red Manson, and the team’s anchor, Linda Woodford. It was talked about this past weekend that this was close to the 30th year that Linda has competed in the B.C. Interior Championships, and she definitely proved herself at the 69th Annual. In addition to all of the fantastic adult bowling this past weekend, we have two of our youth bowlers that are headed to Maple Ridge to compete in the Provincial Championships,

a massive congratulations to Natalie MacDonald and Tristan Jules.

“Is my child doing everything they need to graduate?”

“I’m not sure how to help my 12-year-old with his homework.”

I know the frustration of seeing your child holding their head at the table saying they can’t do their homework and the feeling of not being able to help them. It’s why I’m so excited to share a way to help you and your children. Whether they are in Grade 1 or Grade 11, LearnNowBC has resources to help them, and you, succeed.

This unique and learner focused online portal was created by B.C. educators and follows the B.C. curriculum. It offers over 2,500 free courses and programs online including free one-on-one tutoring five nights per week for secondary students. They can call in between 6 and 10 pm and talk to a tutor.

The young learning centre is an interactive learning experience with games and activities designed for young learners. These games can help them develop the fundamental skills they need for math, science, social studies and English.

A daily physical activity (DPA) tracker can also be found on the website. Students in Grades 10 through 12 must participate in a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity per day to meet the graduation requirements. Through the DPA tracker students can log in to the website and track their activity each day to keep on track.

Is your high school student interested in getting a Trade? There is a “Trades Program Finder” on the site that allows you to search and find the training you want, where you want it.

There is even a section with video tutorials about using and taking advantage of online tools such as Facebook, Google and Remind 101, which is an app teachers can use to text students reminders without actually obtaining their phone numbers.

All you need to do to access these free resources is log in to LearnNowBC (www.learnnowbc.com) using your student’s identification number. If you have any problems doing this you can call your child’s school and they will walk you through it.

Parents with young children can set their kids up with a game or activity in the evenings to build skills. High school students can go online and find a tutor to get help. Whatever you need it can be found on LearnNowBC. This is a quality, vetted website that is made in B.C. for B.C. students and parents.
